The real deal is that this is not so much a hits package as a hyped collection of songs that made the charts, album tracks, and rarities like Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Pipeline" duet with surf-rock king Dick Dale. (At least SRV completists no longer have to buy the God-awful Back to the Beach soundtrack.) Blending blues classics, rockers, and instrumentals was a signature of Vaughan's sets, but it doesn't work for these 16 tunes. Lesser numbers like "Empty Arms," "Shake for Me," and "Wall of Denial" seem filler between thrillers like "Telephone Song," "Scuttle Buttin'," and a version of "Leave My Girl Alone" that had been available only on a promotional CD. Remember, Vaughan's recording career lasted seven years--too short a time to merit two hits discs. This CD could be all you need..........2007-05-19

I read another review that pretty much hit the mark. If you are not real heavy into SRV, this is a great CD to have. It has all his stuff you've heard on the radio plus a few other tasty cuts. On the other hand, there are a lot of really smokin tunes that are missing from this short collection. It's like a teaser - when it's over, you'll wish there was a disc number two.

Okay, if you're starting a fan off, you'd want them to hear examples of Stevie's stunning guitar. Makes sense, right? That's the guy's claim to fame, after all. And yet they miss out on a few of his best solos. Where's Rivera Paradise? Where's Lenny? Where's Things (That) I Used to Do? Wheres Ain't Gone 'n' Give Up on Love? Love Struck Baby? Testify? Wall of Denial? Let Me Love You Baby? Or, if you want a bit of acoustic SRV, how about Life By the Drop? If you're looking for just Stevie's best known songs, this does contain Texas Flood, Pride and Joy, Couldn't Stand the Weather, Cold Shot, Life Without You and the cover of Little Wing. But this was a blown opprotunity to present the definitive Stevie Ray Vaughan overview. Stick to Essential if you're a newcomer, since it contains most of this album plus most the above tracks.

Not the best "Greatest Hits" album for SRV.......2007-03-02

Was a fan for many years of this man, and was extremely devastated upon his sudden death in the mid eighties. An artist such as SRV has many great songs as well as lesser-known gems. I like the songs on this album but the bad thing is that it is not remastered. For the money you cannot go wrong, but for a little more you can get a better compilation than this one, which came out in 1995. Groovy sounds and of course the Blues mystique is what you get here. Features hits like Taxman and one of my favorites in "Couldn't stand the weather". If you can pick up the 2002 release "The Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble" then that is a better purchase in my opinion. Other great songs include "Pride and Joy" and the fun rocker "The House is rockin". The best thing for this artist would be to present fans with a boxed set that included all of the singles as well as some live performances. If you are new to SRV then this is not a bad place to start.

Of course with any Greatest Hits compilation by any artist, people are going to fuss about songs left out and/or included. I think everyone will agree that every song on here deserves its place, though personally I think that omitting "Look at Little Sister" and "Love Struck Baby" leaves a big vacuum. Still, this CD does what it intends to do: showcases the absolutely uncanny talent of SRV. The man plays with more than just a feel for the guitar, he plays like he's channeling a higher spirit. All you have to do is take one listen to "Little Wing" where he fleshes out the Hendrix' tune, runs with it, and makes it his own.
I'd recommend this CD to someone who isn't all that familiar with SRV and wants to just jump in where the waters fine, or to anyone who wants a plum (tho compact) compilation. (Another plus is the pamphlet which gives great insight to each song by those who know.)

Purists will decry missing songs, but you can't complain about this collection of great songs. Stevie and DT have a timeless quality to their music that lets you listen to them over and over and not get tired of it. If you've only heard a few of their songs on the radio, you owe it to yourself to try the others -- you won't regret it.

Introducing Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble........2007-04-28

I think this is a very thorough Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble CD, spanning Stevie's entire career. Every song is good, including many studio hits and fan favorites, as well as a few live cuts. My personal favorites are: "Love Struck Baby", "Pride & Joy", "Mary Had A Little Lamb", "Scuttle Buttin'", "Couldn't Stand The Weather", "Cold Shot", "Empty Arms", "Say What!", "Life Without You", "Little Wing", "Leave My Girl Alone", "The House Is Rockin'", "Crossfire", "Tightrope", "Wall Of Denial", "Riviera Paradise", "Telephone Song", and "Long Way From Home". There are a few others that I would have liked to have on here, but I think that these tunes are "essential", timeless classics, effectively showcasing Stevie's talent and charisma, and are a good start for someone new to his music.

Stevie Ray...What can one say? Wow, Awesome, and a legend before his time.
I have debated with so many the precise presence, sheer volume Stevie emitted from his guitar, through his soul. Yes there are many great guitarits. Clapton, Hendrix, Page...just to name a few. What Stevie brought was electrifying and still very personal. He was in a class of his own. So why this review? I have been listening to Stevie for quite some time. I own most of his records. (CD) I even purchased his single-disc "Greatest Hits." I was relatively happy to have his biggest hits on one convenient disc. So one day I'm in Target, out of the corner of my eye I notice this beaming CD...(drumroll) "The Essential"...I almost fell over, seriously. See, I own a few "Essential" CD's: Dylan, Billy Joel, ELO...So obviously when I saw this I thought I was purchasing a gold mine...

While it does contain great work, why the need to include so many "live"
versions? Bottom line? If I want a live set, I'll buy a live set. This could've been a great, blown-away 2-disc set. It is great for picking the selections that should've been on his single disc, to transfer to your iPod...

This legendary 1983 debut by the fallen torchbearer of the '80s-'90s blues revival sounds even more dramatic in its remixed and expanded edition. Stevie Ray Vaughan's guitar and vocals are a bit brighter and more present on this 14-track CD. And the newly included bonus numbers (an incendiary studio version of the slow blues "Tin Pan Alley" that was left off the original release, and live takes of "Testify," "Mary Had a Little Lamb," and the instrumental "Wham!" from a 1983 Hollywood concert) illuminate the raw soul and passion that propelled his artistry even when he was under the spell of drug addiction. Texas Flood captures Vaughan as rockin' blues purist, paying tribute in his inspired six-string diction to his influences Larry Davis (who wrote the title track), Buddy Guy, Albert King, and Jimi Hendrix. What this album is like.......2006-11-27

The liner notes of this CD quote a 1981 spectator of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble's live show: "It was like church."

That's exactly what it was like. I used to say it was "like a religion," some 25 years ago, for me to show up an hour early at Fitzgerald's in Houston, to be first in line when the club opened and get a table right in front of SRV's microphone. What I remember most vividly is his hands on his guitar. He didn't schmooze his audience; he didn't have much patter. Stevie Ray expressed himself through his fingers, and he poured out his soul.

I think he knew very well that one night, my hand was regularly moving in my purse because I was starting and stopping a tape recorder. According to SRV, he was then stuck in a recording contract with someone who would release neither an album nor him from the contract. I listened to that bootleg frequently between his live appearances. (Don't ask: I no longer have it and wouldn't copy it if I did.)

Thus I can "Testify" that the cuts on this first album faithfully replicate the sound of his performance of these songs. Nothing is added - there are only bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton ably anchoring SRV's guitar - and nothing is taken away. If the trio required more than one recording for each of these tracks, it was only to choose among SRV's brilliant improvisations.

The liner notes from the follow-up album, COULDN'T STAND THE WEATHER, emphasize SRV's macho appearance as this Texan blasted away a New York City audience. "Macho" is not what SRV was like. He had a slight build. He was soft-spoken. The last cut on the original issue of TEXAS FLOOD, a tribute to SRV's wife, is exquisitely tender, the opposite of macho - in front of God and everyone! SRV played not to impose himself on his listeners but to persuade. Which is ultimately much more powerful.

I learned only from the liner notes for the TEXAS FLOOD reissue that SRV is credited with igniting the 1980s blues revival. That's what a prophet is for, isn't it?

Modern Day Blues Classic.......2006-10-17

This is one of the finest blues albums to be produced in the past 25 years. Right off the bat from the blistering 'Testify' to the classic 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' to the closing jazz influenced 'Lenny' you know this album is going to be something special. SRV & TD are found here as a trio and you would be hard pressed to find a tighter band. This album is a little more striped down and more bluesy then SRV latter works. This and 'In Sessions' with Albert King are probably Stevie's best blues albums.

Well, I guess if your a real fan of SRV, then you will love this. I am new to his music, and although he is obviously an accomplished muso, it was not quite what I wanted. It has not sold me on him, but he does have a couple of good tracks. Maybe just not for me.I will not purchase any more SRV if this is representative of his work

If you are new to SRV and looking for a great sample of his best work, this is the album for you. Selections are among the most intense blues ever to burn from SRV's guitar. The recording quality is top notch - including the live cuts.

Stevie Ray Vaughan was getting better by the year,never playing the same song quite the same way twice.He was the best of his kind.King of texas blues.Mr.Vaughan came to a tragic ending in a plane crash after fighting a life threatning drug addiction.Such an abrupt end for such an amazing person.

Two greatist hits were then released.This is Vol.2 you'd assume to get lackluster songs not quite as big as the glowing presence of Vol.1.If that is what you're guessing you're off(WAY OFF).Overall i think this is a much better interpratation of Mr.Vaughans true capabilities."Scuttle Buttin'" is a fast and short song resulting in an almost Van Halen "Eruption" solo feeling.Stevies accesability to make a song his own shows in a Jimi Hendrix song"Voodoo Chile"(later shown in 2001's "Black Hawk Down")as he did with The Beatles "Taxman" on the first vol..

Mr.Vaughans vocals are raspy and low and energetic.If you ever seen him live you'd know how much soul he poured into each performance.His beat up guitar is a trade mark.You will be able to hear this aura in the live tracks like "Shake For Me" and "Superstation".A crowd favorite "Lenny" is on the album,but not live.

Sixteen of Mr.Vaughans amazing songs shine hear and is worth more then what is asked for.

In a brief interview that precedes this CD's four bonus tracks--all unreleased gems from the original 1984 sessions--Stevie Ray Vaughan makes the point that "music used to be more based on common everyday occurrences like a train's sound going down the track ... a horse walking." Then he comes on with a version of Freddie King's "Hideaway" that chugs like a locomotive. There's also a heretofore unheard slide-guitar-powered "Give Me Back My Wig" and a blueprint of what became Soul to Soul's radio hit "Look at Little Sister." Bluesy, Jazzy Vaughan Breaks From the Pack.......2007-04-06

On Couldn't Stand The Weather, Stevie Ray Vaughan began to separate himself from every other modern bluesman with his distinct playing style.

On this record, you can hear a number of influences both individual and stylistic. The obvious Hendrix influence in a scorching version of "Voodoo Chile," Guitar Slim/Albert King/Albert Collins on "The Things That I Used To Do," and jazzy influenced "Tin Pan Alley" and "Stang's Swang." These, plus "Cold Shot" and the title cut elevated Vaughan to a different level than most of his contemporaries.

This is a fantastic blues/jazz album.

I will be writing a review on the legendary brilliant masterpiece album entitled "COULD'T STAND THE WEATHER" by one of Rock's greatest legendary premiere guitarists of ALL-TIME, I give you the late great guitar legend, M-R. S-T-E-V-I-E R-A-Y V-A-U-G-H-A-N! This legendary album was originally released in 1984 on vinyl/LP, cassette and Compact Disc on the Epic Records label in association with CBS Inc. I purchased the very first release of this album on Compact Disc and the matrix or ID number is EK 39304. This first release album on Compact Disc was actually manufactured in Japan by CBS/Sony, Tokyo, Japan. WOW! What can I say about the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan that hasn't already been said? His story and humble beginnings hail from the great state of Texas! Stevie Ray was born on 3 October 1954 in Dallas, Texas. Stevie Ray would get the Rock bug spark early and would have his call of duty in Rock n' Roll upon hearing his most dearest and favorite guitarist and idol of ALL-TIME, the late great guitar legend, Jimi Hendrix! Stevie Ray would play many bar room gigs with his older brother Jimmie all across the country and Canada which would eventually expand worldwide. Stevie Ray NEVER gave up on his dreams in hoping for fame and fortune for he must have realized that it was his destiny to be a performer. Little did Stevie Ray know that his destiny was just around the corner that would change his life forever.

It would't be until 1982 when Stevie Ray and his band, DOUBLE TROUBLE, would be noticed and discovered at the annual Montreux Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland by Rock legends David Bowie and Jackson Browne! Bowie and Browne were present in the house that night and were in TOTAL disbelief upon what they were hearing! Realizing the talent, genius, greatness and full potential that Stevie Ray possessed, Browne notified many of his contacts and connections and even offered Stevie Ray the RARE opportunity to record, FREE OF CHARGE, at his own personal studio. WOW! It must have been destiny because Browne really truly believed in Stevie Ray's abilities and talents! The album "TEXAS FLOOD" from 1983 would be the result and Stevie Ray's first album for Epic Records.

In addition to this new found fame, Stevie Ray was approached by the legendary David Bowie and was asked to play on Bowie's hugely successful "LET'S DANCE" album and Tour with him! This in itself, was a huge honor for Stevie Ray and accepted Bowie's invitation in a split second.

With Stevie Ray's new found success, it was now time for Stevie Ray to head back into the recording studio to record the followup to the "TEXAS FLOOD" album. "BLUES EXPLOSION" from 1984 would be the result and again, the Stevie Ray Vaughan legend would continue to grow. With Stevie Ray's popularity growing ever more, Stevie Ray would quickly go back into the recording studio and record another follow up to the extremely successful "BLUES EXPLOSION" album. It would be on Stevie Ray's third album that he would really let loose which would result in accomplishing the worldwide fame and fortune that he had been in search of all his life. "COULDN'T STAND THE WEATHER," released in 1984, would be the result. In my opinion, "COULDN'T STAND THE WEATHER" is a BRILLIANT masterpiece album with BRILLIANT song tracks!

This is a GREAT STEVIE RAY BLUES ROCKER that KICKS SOME SERIOUS A*S! Stevie Ray REALLY lets loose on this Blues Rocker! I just wish that this Rocker would have been longer than 1:52! Despite that, I Love this Blues Rocker dearly!) (2.) "Couldn't Stand The Weather," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Breathtaking! Again, another GREAT STEVIE RAY BLUES ROCKER THAT KICKS SOME SERIOUS A*S! I love Stevie Ray's blistering guitar riff arrangements and his blistering solo! Stevie Ray sings and sounds almost exactly like Eric Clapton! You can almost feel Jimi Hendrix's influence on Stevie Ray and it definitely shows on this album. I love this Blues Rocker DEARLY!) (3.) "The Things (That) I Used To Do," Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Breathtaking! Again, another GREAT STEVIE RAY BLUES NUMBER THAT KICKS A*S! Stevie Ray plays the Blues and his blistering solo with NO MERCY! I love this Blues number!) (4.) "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Breathtaking! A PERFECT AND BRILLIANT TRIBUTE TO THE LATE GREAT JIMI HENDRIX! This is ONE GREAT VERSION THAT NEARLY SOUNDS BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL IF NOT BETTER! Stevie Ray had a lot of BA*LS in recording this most sacred Hendrix classic. This Rocker KICKS SOME SERIOUS A*S as well! I LOVE Stevie Ray's BLISTERING guitar solo in this classic song! In my opinion, had Jimi lived, he would have been extremely proud of Stevie's version and rendition of his most sacred Rocker! "I DIDN'T MEAN TO TAKE UP ALL YOUR SWEET TIME, I PROMISE TO GIVE IT BACK TO YOU ONE OF THESE DAYS! AND DON'T BE LATE!" To sum up this song track, in my opinion, this is almost eight minutes of the GREATEST A*S KICKING ROCK N' ROLL EVER! I love this Rocker so dearly!) (5.) "Cold Shot," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! As you can see, SO FAR, this is definitely one great legendary treasure album worth purchasing that he or she should definitely own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary album is a true genuine classic that will definitely prove to persevere and endure the test of time and get better with age like wine! This legendary album is a true testament of Stevie Ray's brilliance and genius that would only get better until his untimely death in 1990. In closing, the STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN legend does not end here! If anything, IT IS ONLY THE BEGINNING! Stevie Ray would record three more extremely successful highly critically acclaimed studio albums not including the "BACK TO THE BEACH" soundtrack recorded in 1987. Stevie Ray's third studio album "IN STEP," released in 1989, would be Stevie Ray's last official studio album he would ever record alive! Following the success of "IN STEP" from 1989, Stevie Ray would go on tour with another one of his most favorite idol's, the legendary guitar GREAT, Eric Clapton! This would be the GREATEST TOUR in Stevie Ray's life and would also prove to be the greatest ultimate honor to be ON THE SAME STAGE with one of the WORLD'S and ROCK'S MOST GREATEST PREMIERE GUITAR PLAYERS of ALL-TIME! 27 August 1990 would be the last official performance of this tour with Clapton! It would also prove to be on this same very final night, at the Alpine Valley Amphitheater in Southern Wisconsin, that Stevie Ray would have THE GREATEST NIGHT OF HIS LIFE! Sadly, hours later, he would be gone forever! Jamming on the same stage with his brother Jimmie by his side, would be a star studed performance celebration which would include fellow guitarists Clapton, Robert Cray and Buddy Guy! The last song that Stevie Ray Vaughan would EVER perform live ALIVE was "Sweet Home Chicago!" WHAT A STAR STUDED NIGHT IT REALLY WAS INDEED! To add to the Stevie Ray legend, story or legend has it that Stevie Ray would cut his fingers while placing them over the guitar strings on the guitar frets. This legend is FACT! With this in mind, Stevie Ray's finger's and guitar would wind up bloody! Would Stevie Ray quit? HELL NO! He would go backstage and apply SUPER GLUE over the cut areas and then go back out and give his fans more! IS THAT LOYALTY OR WHAT? Sadly, on a tragic note, following this star studed gig performance, Stevie Ray (Without Clapton! Clapton was reportedly supposed to have accompanied and boarded with Vaughan!) would board a helecopter bound for Chicago, Illinois. According to the findings by the FAA, the helicopter pilot misjudged his bearings shortly after take off and slammed his craft into the side of a hill, killing all on board instantly. Upon hearing the news, THE WHOLE WORLD AS WELL AS THE WHOLE ROCK N' ROLL WORLD WAS IN SHOCK FROM DISBELIEF! In my opinion, It was like reliving "THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED" in reference to the 1959 plane crash claiming the lives of Buddy Holly (A fellow Texan from Lubbock), J.P. (The Big Bopper) Richardson and 17 year old Ritchie Valens! Just imagine how Eric Clapton must have felt! Vaughan's death would bring back painful memories of another one of his dearest friends! Clapton went though this same fatality with Hendrix on 17 September 1970 when he was supposed to meet Hendrix at a night club in London. Clapton had bought a brand newly strung Fender left-handed V shaped electric guitar that he was going to give Jimi that night but Hendrix would NEVER show up to claim it or accept his gift for we all know what happened on 18 September 1970? In Stevie Ray's short life, he lived, breathed, accomplished, contributed and achieved so much in the Rock n' Roll and Blues world that it was a tragedy that his life was cut so short. Stevie Ray still had so much to give and was willing to give it all to us! Stevie Ray is a true legend that will NEVER be forgotten nor denied. What a major tragic loss for Rock n' Roll! And as the saying goes folks, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong or need I say more? Here's to you Stevie Ray and Double Trouble. R.I.P. The first time I heard Stevie Ray Vaughan on the radio, I thought it was Hendrix. And I think he ranks with Hendrix as one of the two greatest guitar players in Rock history.

From the late 1970s until this album came out, Eddie Van Halen seemed to be the undisputed King of Rock guitar. With this album, Stevie Ray Vaughan left no question as to who, among the living, was #1. Although, like Hendrix, Vaughan would be cut down in the prime of his life, he left gargantuan tracks. (Why is it always the best who die young? Why couldn't they have gotten Jon Bon Jovi in that helicopter? "C'mon Jon, there's a hairdresser on board. Yeah, yeah, get inside Jon!")

The album contains an excellent cover of Guitar Slim's blues tune "Things that I Used to Do," as well as divine original tracks such as "Scuttle Buttin", "Honey Bee" and the title track. But the CD's highlight for this reviewer is Vaughan's cover of Jimi Hendrix' "Voodoo Chile."

While Stevie Ray's musicianship really shines through on this CD, when I saw him live for the first time, opening up for Dire Straights at the Montreal Forum in the mid-80s, it was just jaw-dropping amazing! He blew Mark Knopfler and the boys off the stage. If you like the music on this CD and haven't seen Vaughan perform in concert, I highly recommend his Live at Montreux DVD.

Unoriginal, but enjoyable.......2006-03-31

Whether you know it or not, you've heard an LP like this before. But the difference between Couldn't Stand the Weather and other similar LP's; you'd be hard-pressed to find a better guitarist than Stevie. That being said, don't expect to shelve your Allman Brothers Band so you can devote your life to the music of SRV. However, you should expect to enjoy this every time you hear it.
The two finest cuts on this LP are the title track and Cold Shot. The latter was so good, it led me to buy the album when I heard it on the radio at a ribs joint. The title track would stand as the best to be found here, though the stop-start pattern is annoying. The two instrumentals that bookend the LP (Scuttle-Buttin' and Stang's Swang) are both solid, energetic and enjoyable, though not all that memorable.
One reason why I was looking forward to hearing this LP was for the cover of Hendrix's Voodoo Child (Slight Return), which has always been one of my favorite songs. And though bits of it cut too close to the original (something a cover should NOT do), it's still worth having around strictly for the guitar solos. Another great jam track is Tin Pan Alley, though it does drag a bit, still a nice piece of music!
If you're into the blues, pick this up, but don't expect the Revolution. (Speaking of which, that Prince vynil in the basement calls...)

all the other SRV fans have already told u how great this album is im just here to talk about the bonus track "life without you" (live). the studio version is good but this version is so much better, words cannot describe how i feel about it. its expanded by about 10 minutes and includes one of stevies free form raps. But what makes me love it so much is the expression and raw emotion stevie puts into every note. i close my eyes when i listen to it and i get this indescribable feeling and enter this state of mind were nothing else matters or even exists. it sounds corny i know, but that is the power that this song has. anyways i think i will wrap up my seemingly crazy description of the song and my feelings for it. i love the rest of the album to but this is my favorite track. please, dont hesitate in buying it.

SRV has to be on the short list of greatest guitarists ever. He is amazing. This album is one of his best, it is just awesome. This man could play and this album really shows off his skills. Great album.

Mr. Vaughn's recovery from addiction comes through loud and clear while he loses none of the passion and style that made him so popular to begin with. Every song is like a self-portrait of an man who has finally found the way to real success. The songs are upbeat and make you want to dance with the newfound joy of the artist. Some of the best that SRV has to offer.

I just wanted to add some info for anyone who's considering buying this but is not completely sure:

The bonus track live version of "Texas Flood" is 7 minutes 22 seconds of Stevie's best live playing EVER recorded. It is amazing. By itself it justifies the $9 expenditure for any SRV fan. The live bonus "Life Without You" is terrific too, by far the best version I've heard of that song (minus the preachy little anti-booze speech he stops to give partway through), but nothing compares to the "Texas Flood" on here. I don't think I'll ever forgive myself for not having been born soon enough to see this man play live.

So if you're thinking about getting it - get it!

Released after Vaughan's death in a 1990 helicopter accident, The Sky Is Crying collects unreleased studio tracks from throughout the guitarist's recorded career. In Vaughan's early years, he was a stylist who thought nothing of using ten notes when three would have worked. Rock stardom, cocaine, and alcohol did little to temper his tendency towards overstatement, but by In Step, his last studio album (and first clean-and-sober effort), he'd begun to transcend his many influences to forge a hard-boiled style of his own. The collection documents this passage, starting with unreleased covers of Lonnie Mack's "Wham" and Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" from the time of his debut album. "The Sky Is Crying" was originally cut by Elmore James, but Vaughan's lead guitar owes its stylistic debt to the bluesman who had a most profound influence on his playing, Albert King. The Sky Is Crying (1991) is an album of songs recorded by Stevie Ray Vaughan that weren't used on albums he officially released before his untimely death at 35 on August 27, 1990, in a helicoptor accident. Why, I don't know. There is some really great blues here. The best song on the album is the title track. Originally an Elmore James song, Stevie gives it the full-tilt, wild electric guitar, slow blues treatment (think Texas Flood), and it's as good as he's ever done. His instrumental take on Jimi Hendrix's Little Wing sounds really good, too, and a lot like Jimi. I wish Stevie would have sung on it, too. Boot Hill is excellant electric slide guitar boogie with trademark SRV vocals. May I Have A Talk With You is very good, and Stevie speeds things up with the lusty Close To You. One of the biggest treats on the album is the 12-string acoustic guitar solo, Life By The Drop. Stevie sings of being left behind by his best guitar mate, who chose pursuing his dream over drinking his life away (living life by the drop). It's a moving performance of a poignant song. Lovingly produced by his brother, Jimmie Vaughan, The Sky Is Crying sounds as good as any of SRV's albums. While a couple of the instrumental songs are uneven and really nothing new, the album as a whole is very good, and it's essential for the fans of a great bluesman, Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Great SRV Compilation CD.......2007-07-18

Critics cite Texas Flood and In Step as SRV's bests albums, but this is easily my personal favorite. It's a nice sampling of his unbelievable and seemingly unattainable talents and abilities.

Vaughan's deranged vocals and fiery slide guitar hit you like a freight train on "Boot Hill," the CD's first song. "Chitlins Con Carne" is a wonderful example of his jazz guitar--pure elegance--suitable as a backdrop to a formal dinner. In addition, SRV's "Life By The Drop" is a haunting ballad played on 12-string acoustic guitar--a fitting cap stone to a great retrospective CD and brilliant career.

A real winner!.......2007-07-13

This is easily on par with SRV's first three albums. It's, as you may know, a posthumous release of recordings made throughout his career. Many people rave about the "Little Wing" cover--and it is great--but I'm knocked out by the Kenny Burrell cover of "Chitlins con Carne." Every song is a keeper, not a throw-away in the bunch, just a slightly wider variety of SRV's playing than you'd get elsewhere.

2 and 1/2 stars : an average record with some good songs.......2007-07-06

i don't understand the five stars ratings for this record, for me it is really average; the bad news first : i don't like his voice and it rather detracts the music than the contrary, plus personally, and that is purely subjective, i think he plays with too heavy strings; 'Little Wing' is a bad endless version, way too repetitive (the fact he didn't understand that playing the same musical theme over and over again was to turn this great song of Hendrix into such a repetitive thing is beyond me); the good news: the sky is crying, May I have a talk with you (raw and bluesy, my favorite track), Life by the Drop (a simple but nice bluesy ballad), the instrumental Chitlins con carne, are good though i find his guitar playing on the excellent 'May i have...' a little bit repetitive, he seems to play the same melodic theme, with some bits of variations over and over again; however the four songs that i quoted are worth a listen.

Left overs from other albums.......2007-06-22

NOT BAD FOR A POSTHUMOUS ALBUM.

These tracks come from recording sessions starting with Stevie Ray Vaughan's second album (Couldn't Stand the Weather) through his last (In Step). They were tracks that did not make it on to those other albums.

You got to ask yourself, why weren't these songs included on other albums? It wasn't like any of Vaughan's albums were too long. They were all under 40 minutes, some around 35 minutes long, and had plenty of room for more songs, even for LP standards. The average LP is 20 minutes a side but could hold up to 30 minutes of music on one side.

Many people are saying this is Vaughan's best album. So, was Vaughan a complete idiot and didn't know how to pick songs for his albums while he was alive?

For a posthumous album, this isn't bad. Many albums that were released after an artist died or a group broke up are a mess of scrapings off of the floor. There are usually odds and sods of novelty songs and incomplete tracks. Unlike those, The Sky is Crying is mostly an album of complete songs, and almost sounds like a normal album.

There are a few glitches in some of the songs, but nothing significant. Probably most notable is the mixing errors in Chitlins con Carne.

There are some very good tracks on this CD, especially the instrumental Chitlin con Carne. This is one of those great slow blues numbers from the Couldn't Stand the Weather days. The instrumental version of Little Wing is also pretty good.

Other songs are not quite as good, being overloaded with the Vaughan cliches of the screaming vocals and running up the guitar screens. I am guessing that some of these songs were left of the original albums because they were just too much of the same thing.

I don't think this CD is anywhere in the class of Couldn't Stand the Weather or In Step, but it is certainly better than Soul to Soul.

First things first,I enjoy Eric's guitar playing,I do not like his singing,I do skip over his songs and play just the instrumentals.I don't think he can sing and should play the guitar only!I do enjoy listening Venus Isle almost as much as Ah,Via Musicom!

Overproduced.......2007-03-17

Mr. Johnson is one of the great guitar technicians today with the best ("100 lb violin") tone combining blues, jazz, rock, and an ocassional ballad.

I am sorry to disagree with many of the well thought-out positive reviews but this thing was in the oven way too long and simply overproduced.

Everything else he has recorded is 5 stars+. If you get a chance to see him play live, get there whatever you do!

This is a great Eric Johnson album. I enjoy every track on it and highly recommend it. I personally prefer it when he isn't doing vocals, but I also like the tracks where he does sing. "Manhattan" and "SRV" were reason enough for me to buy this album, and I was happy to find some more great music by this man. 5 stars. Give it a try.

good from start to finish.......2006-07-10

I picked this up in a remainder bin (!) - to me, always the ultimate insult to an artist - and it has become my favourite Eric Johnson cd. It seems to be a continuing tale, spun musically throughout the disc, and other than my perennial quibble with Eric (I can't understand you!), vocally and instrumentally it is a virtual gem. I am presently labouring under the delusion that, someday, I will be able to play a recognizable cover of "Manhattan" (I've said in the past that I'm not a fan of covers, but this is only for my own consumption), a smooth, jazzy piece halfway into the cd. Eric exercises his pipes on three memorable, melodic songs; "Battles We Have Won", "All About You", and "Lonely In The Night", the last in which he exhibits nice range. In "Song For Lynette", he breaks away from his lightning-fast guitar and spins a soft-as-a-flowing-creek piano turn, a nice surprise. "S.R.V.", "Camel's Night Out", and "Venus Isle" - "Venus Reprise" take care of the fast licks. All in all, really my best choice of Eric Johnson's work.

Chronological history of Stevie Ray's fantastic blues.......2007-06-23

I bought this, my second copy, so that my wife (a piano and percussion major in college, plus her Master's) could enjoy the 3 CDs of Stevie Ray in her car. She has grown to appreciate SRV to the point that she thinks he is amazing. "Couldn't Stand The Weather" has an unusual insertion of 2/4 time in the midst of the song. It made it onto his commercially available CDs, unlike most of the previously unreleased cuts. The inclusion of early recordings (the earliest being 1977) in this set makes it even better, as you hear the young guitar slinger of the blues mature in his playing (and in his life when he gave up his alcohol and cocaine on October 13, 1986, although its effects never showed to me in the commercial CDs) until his death in August 1990 in a helicopter accident in Wisconsin. This set is far and above any other SRV "collection," even better than "Stevie Ray Vaughan, Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues (Series)." It can be listened to over and over, due to there being 3 CDs and such powerful playing. Out of all of the cuts, "Thunderbird" (1977) is my least favorite although you can hear some of SRV's Texas shuffle playing in its earliest form. The first CD is Stevie Ray Vaughn prior to his signing a recording contract in 1983 as a result of his appearance in Montreaux in 1982, with the second and third CD providing some marvelous cuts like "Crossfire" and "The House is Rockin'". So many favorites here that I can recommend this to anyone who loves the blues and/or Stevie Ray who is a guitar master of the blues. The inclusion of a DVD and the booklet of photos and history is pure icing on the cake! Buy this one!

I'd like to be clear that the lower score has nothing to do with Stevie and the guy's five star quality playing. The lower score is the product it's self.

I eagerly waited to get my hands on it when it first arrived. It has great packaging, and outstanding little booklet, and even a DVD! It looked promising!

Sadly, upon further review, after the nifty packaging it's really down hill from there. As a hardcore SRV fan, I was sooo disappointed in this box set. Actually, more confusion than disappointment. Who is the target audience? Hardcore or casual fans?

There are some great hidden gems and obscure cuts that will please the hardcore fan, and there are some bits and pieces of studio work from Stevie's published library that will help the casual fan. But mixing the two is downright annoying.

This really could have been a great double disc by doing two things:
1. Drop the studio cuts that can be found elsewhere in Stevie's collection and
2. Cut the DVD. You can get more in depth live stuff on other DVDs

That would theoretically drop the box set price to please hardcore fans with the hidden gems. With the extra savings, causal fans would have enough $$ left over to pursue any number of options such as any combination of Stevie's records, greatest hits or Austin City Limit or El Mocambo DVD's.

My guess, like so many other artists no longer with us, the big record label machine took over and had it's sticky paws over the construction of this mess.

Another essential SRV set for collectors.......2006-03-06

I own most of the SRV catalog including this set and I must say that this is a marvelous compilation but it may not be the best set to buy if you are a novice or just beginning to "get into" his work. "The Essential SRV" (2 disc set) or "Greatest Hits V-I & II" (separately packaged single discs) may be the best way to go, IMO. The 3 CD, 1 DVD boxed set is beautifully packaged and presents a lot of live cuts and previously unreleased material to fill gaps in his catalog collection but by no means represents all of his well known titles. The DVD consists of a shortened version of his "One Night In Texas" DVD and gives a fine overview of the raw talent he presented on stage. Like Hendrix, SRV belonged on stage where his work excelled.

The series of Stevie Ray Vaughan concert albums that began with Live Alive (1986) and continued after the guitarist's 1990 death is far from the catalog-bloating cash-in you'd expect from the record company of a platinum seller cut down at a career peak. Instead, each disc gives a distinctly different view of the Texas blues-rocker's stage strengths. Where Live Alive captured Vaughan and his band Double Trouble in full arena roar and In the Beginning recorded a looser early club gig, Live at Carnegie Hall finds the outfit broadening its range with guest shots from Dr. John and the Roomful of Blues horn section. Rather than overpowering Vaughan's signature tautness, the bigger band makes for an entertaining switch--in effect allowing a fresh look at his R&B roots. --Rickey Wright

Outrageous playing.......2007-03-14

Of all his CD's, this feautures some of Stevie's best playing, and it's LIVE! The acoustics of Carnegie Hall add tremendous depth to his soulful playing here, and he just rips and rips away without holding anything back. As an added bonus, this was right near the end of his career when he had his head on straight and his chops were peaking. You are really missing out if your collection doesn't include this one.

Great Recording.......2007-01-21

There is such history in this venue, and for Stevie to play there it was quite an extraordinary event. The recording is fabulous in your face guitar,
like they had the mic inside his cabinets, protected by a noise gate. Great, great live performance here.

Carnegie Hall Delivers.......2007-01-17

Live at Carnegie Hall is a must-have for the diehard SRV fan who wants to get a taste of the guitar master's live perfomance electricity. I purchased his Live Alive CD prior to this one and was somewhat disappointed (Live Alive was recorded at the depths of SRV's drug and alcohol addiction and lacked the luster and originality of his previous works).

This, however, was a real treat. His torrential solo on Dirty Pool and collaboration with his brother, Jimmie, on Things that I Used to Do were flawlessly executed and super-charged. I am always amazed at how he could bend and twist notes in ways unheard of, but these two songs were absolutely mind-boggling.

The second half of the CD, where SRV adds the Room Full of Blues horns and Dr. John on keyboards, was a pleasant surprise. Initially, I was skeptical, thinking it would be like "gilding the lilly, but it's a great R&B sound that every SRV fan should experience. In addition, Angela Strehli was outstanding on her fiery vocal on C.O.D.

The only issue that prevented me from giving this a five-star rating, is the muddy sound on the first two or three songs (Carnegie Hall was originally designed for acoustic performances). Don't let this stop you from adding this one to your collection, though.

Barn-stormin'.......2006-11-11

SRV and friends play up a storm. Herein are arguably the definitive recorded versions of "Cold Shot", "Pride and Joy" and "Things That I Used To Do". The horns really add warmth to the sound, but Stevie Ray is front and center. Eric Clapton has said he was in awe of Stevie Ray Vaughan for his flow; the way solos just poured out of him, and there are some blazing examples on this recording.
Yes, the man was a great guitar play, an absolute master of the form, but something that is rarely mentioned is that his singing was as emotive as his playing. He was in great voice on this night too.

Becoming one of my Favorite SRV Albums.......2006-10-26

This album has really grown on me with repeated listenings. One of the reasons why I have come to appreciate this album so much is that it really catches the band at their peak. The album is broken up into two format: the first half finds just the core three piece band, the second half includes an extended band with firends and Room Full of Blues horn section. For me, SRV didn't get any better then the original tight trio They are still the tight trio that put out 'Texas Flood' and it's teh only place in the catalog to find SRV in this format and man is it gooood. The second half is a great addition for any SRV fan and this half has really grown on me. The horns and guest stars (including his brother)has a really different sound\groove then any other SRV album. Dirty Pool is fanastic with the horns. My only wish is the both sides were longer. If you enjoy Stevie's early work you will enjoy this album.

If you enjoy Stevie live, you will enjoy this album. If you have been a long time SRV fan and don't have this album in your collection you need to buy it now. This is a great and surprisely different album from the greatest guitarist to have ever lived.
