5 out of 5 stars Wish there were more like this.......2007-05-25

I bought this CD after hearing One of Us on the radio. I was very pleasantly surprised to find the CD was a collection of great rock and blues. Great Blues tracks include Pensacola and Crazy Baby. Right Hand Man and Spider Web are great rocking tracks.

I'd recommend this to anyone who loves either genere.

4 out of 5 stars Osborne Still Good .......2007-01-06

I especially liked the song One of Us and I discovered others that I like just as well. The songs seemed to stick my memory after I listen to the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Stands the test of time.......2007-01-03

Where did this all come from. This CD came out 11 years ago, and still when I start listening to this disk I can't stop. Every single song on the record is wonderful. It would be hard for me to pick favorites because each song is just so well done and so memorable. In my opinion this CD is a classic in it's entirity.

5 out of 5 stars Great Place To Begin the Beginning.......2006-11-16

This set is a case, unfortunately, of just not getting the attention the artist duly earned and Osborne has drifted into musical limbo, in my estimation, as a result. 'Relish' is an awsome collection of songs, and every bit the equal (as another reviewer remarks) of Morrisette's more highly rewarded and profiled,'Pill'. There are no weak songs on the list. There's real eccentric and daring bite to the vocals, the writing and the musical bent.

5 out of 5 stars One to be relished.......2006-10-02

Relish is a masterwork, and among the most complete CDs you'll come across. This highly underrated release is surely in my top 10 of all time. But let's start by getting this out of the way: while One of Us is a clever pop song, it's the weakest on the CD and the only one that requires some endurance on the listener (or maybe it was just overplayed). Luckily, the remainder is a hell of a ride. Joan's vocals alternate between screamingly raw and virginally sweet---she's an actual singer rather than some over-rehearsed scale warbler. Sorry singer wannabes out there---you're simply born with a voice like this one. Not quite Janis, but capable of doling out the chills on various occasions. It's the kind of voice the producer will let go off-key now and then---it's honest and thus still sounds good.

What else? Well, Relish has everything, except the lyrics. I'd wager my Martin guitar that the villainous record company vetoed their inclusion due to their darkness. Fantastically dark; very good. For wry, laugh-out-loud humor, check out Let's Just Get Naked. The awesome, mournfully sung Crazy Baby prowls the depths of human despair---he's stuck in it; she's stuck on him. Ladder is sheer female-ality---pride-free devotion to a guy who likely doesn't deserve it. If that sounds like the stuff of an unliberated woman, nonsense---the entire album is an ode to liberation, sexual and otherwise. Right Hand Man--monotonous and grating only at first listen---is pure repetitious sexual gyration, the joyous exultation of a (highly successful) one-night stand. It lends the most moral of offerings: life is meant to be enjoyed. When planted in these fertile soils--free from regret, guilt, self-flogging, and other American mainstays---art can bloom. This is true sexuality, and true art--worlds apart from the painted-on variety of most female singers, whose life experience generally consists of experimenting with untried shades of makeup. Joan isn't classically beautiful, but man do you want to play a hand with her after 40 minutes with this CD. You know she's experienced plenty in her day--it's clear to anyone who's spent a chunk of youth treading these same waters.

Every song is well-written, well-performed, well-produced. Its flaw--maybe a crappy cover? And then there's the let-down that follow-ups didn't add up. But this is one that invariably goes in your CD carousel at a party--all substance, no filler. And free of generational musical influence, it's destined to last. How many in the last 25 years can you say that about?

4 out of 5 stars Sunny.......2001-02-20

I first listened to this CD in my mom's car...she never likes music very loud, so I was listening to it softly. DON'T do this. It was bland, uninteresting, and I regretted buying it. However, I got home, and put it into my bedroom CD player, and turned the volume up high...Wow! It was suddenly toe-tapping and swingy, and the melodies were sheer perfection (I love those raggy tunes).

My only complaint is the lack of stringed instruments like banjos (albeit not widespread in the repertoire/style for part of the target period) as a good grounding for the airiness of the winds, which seemed to be lacking in places. It's also great percussion, and drums just don't always do the trick.

But anyways, my advice is: turn the volume up--don't even listen to it on headphones--and lose yourself. A delight. :)

5 out of 5 stars Another Dorian winner.......1999-07-22

How does Dorian do it? After a superlative recreation of (DIS 80107) and (DIS 80153), they come near to topping them both with (DIS 93165). Here The New Columbian Brass Band under George Foreman syncopates again (they did the "Coney Island set) with 21 once very popular band tunes ranging from the 1895 "A Kansas Two-Step" to the relatively recent 1920 "Zampede." Not only does it all leave you (i.e., me) breathless at the end, but one might wish for a bit more than the 62 minutes Dorian provides on this CD. I urge you to have both the "Demon Rag" set with the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra and compare it with the sound of this set's band sound. Both are legitimate, both utterly authentic (as far as I can tell), and each complements the other nicely. So if you think your great-greats were still Victorian stick in the muds in the Edwardian age, these discs will show that even they knew how to have a good time. My only complaint is the producers printing the contents over a picture. More and more companies are doing this and it is very annoying. The information inside the booklet, however, is well presented and the illustrations wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars This is good stuff........2003-09-15

This album was very refreshing for me when i heard it. The band does amazing things here that break the all so boring 1 4 5 rock chord progression. This is like a powerful symphony. The music pushes and pulls rises and fall in a spiritual powerful uplifting manner. The vocals are increadibly powerful as well as the guitars. Very beautiful i would suggest you check it out.

        1 out of 5 stars good god.......2001-08-17

this is the worst cd i've ever heard...id rather buy a 10 cd boxed set of various tracks containing hours and hours of nails against chalkboards...this "band" is so bad they cant even use being girls as an excuse...even KITTIE, the runners-up for worst band ever, are legendary compared to this atrocity. even the suicidal should stay clear of this beer coaster!

4 out of 5 stars Relish: Fullerton's Trio of Doom.......2000-08-17

A heavy sound characterizes the self-titled debut CD by the Fullerton-based band Relish. This is mainly due to guitarist Laura Guaico's uniquely dirty distortion. Her solos are light on virtuosity, but heavy on attitude. Vocalist/bassist Michelle Walker's voice is incredibly strong, as proven by tracks such as "Bled" (although for an even better example, dig for the band's 1996 demo tape version of the song -- it contains what might be the most gut-wrenching scream since Eddie Vedder's node-scorching "Blood"!). And yet she demonstrates an amazing versatility with the CD's most contrasting track, "Castle or A Hole", a technically simple but sonically beautiful ballad. The band showcases an 11/4 time signature and Cranberries-like harmony on "Marry Me", while the gig-opener "Flesh and Kings" again features Walker's soaring voice and more heavily-distorted guitar riffage. With their habit of switching instruments during sets, Relish -- the band AND the CD -- prove that you don't have to rip, just rock. This CD is worth buying twice.

          Album Description

I STRUCK GOLD marks an auspicious new partnership, both professional and personal, between folk veteran Charlie King (vocals, guitar, harmonica) and relative newcomer Karen Brandow (vocals, guitar). Charlie and Karen's repertoire here covers three continents, two languages, and more than forty years of song selections, performed here with sweet harmonies and vibrant musicianship.

The duo's debut CD features songs about love, labor, and social justice, conveyed with passion, sincerity and humor. Among its highlights are the lovely Malvina Reynolds composition, "I Cannot Sleep" (with Charlie and Karen trading lines in English and Spanish), the exuberant title track, and "Que Sera de Mis Hermanos," a haunting song of exile about the US-backed coup in Chile. King and Brandow also target American follies in the defiant "Wal-Mart Union Gonna Rise Again"; "Tinky Winky" chides Jerry Falwell and turns darker with a pointed reference to gay martyr Matthew Shepard; "Barney" chronicles a laughable mishap at the 1997 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, when the giant purple dinosaur's float ran amok. Two songs by the late and much-missed Steve Goodman are also performed - the ruefully good-natured "The One That Got Away" and the starkly tragic "The Ballad of Penny Evans."
