Detroit's Von Bondies may never be able to successfully disentangle themselves from the shadow of the White Stripes, not so much because Jack White produced the band's first album and took them around the world, but because the punch-up between the two groups' front men is destined to go down as one of the most infamous moments in the annals of rock 'n' roll. At least the Von Bondies attempt to move on with their sophomore release, Pawn Shoppe Heart, shedding the makeshift garage-punk sound of their hometown and recruiting former Modern Lover and Talking Heads member Jerry Harrison as producer. The results are staggering, with tracks like "C'mon, C'mon" and "No Regrets" bouncing on big glam riffs and bruised blues wailing, while the band breaks through the door sounding at once shameless and victorious. --Aidin Vaziri

Product Description
Second album from Detroit garage rockers infamous for the bust-up between their frontman Jason Stollsteimer & the band's former mentor & producer Jack White. Released on Warner Bros. & produced by Jerry Harrison (No Doubt, Live, Fine Young Cannibals), 'Pawn Shoppe Heart' continues to refine their fusion of raw, emotional blues with filthy, frenetic, 60s-style garage punk, featuring 12 tracks including the single 'C'mon C'mon'. Sire. 2004.

I hate this CD. I should sell it. No, I should give it away! Does anyone want a free Von Bondies CD?

3 out of 5 stars Wish there was a 3.5 score..........2005-08-28

I can't say I completely liked it but I can't say I didn't like it...I sit in the 'high middle' with this one. Because I'm an addictive Rescue Me fan, I was of course attracted by their song 'C'mon C'mon'. Probably because of this, I paid attention only to that song and pretty much ignored the rest of the tracks.

But after a few listens, I got used to the rest of the album and now I'm really enjoying it. Each song is quite different from another and the whole picture has a lot of variety. I'd recommend it if you're into their really unique style of music, but I would have definitely check it out before I bought it (but it was a gift and now I love it).

5 out of 5 stars The definition of Detroit.......2005-03-30

The Von Bondies have helped to bring back Detroit as a hub for great music. With their sophomore album, "Pawn Shoppe Heart," they have created a blues/garage rock masterpiece. Tracks like "Broken Man" and "Not That Social" are exactly what true garage rock is supposed to be, while "Been Swank" and "Right of Way" are amazing blues numbers, evocative of what the original Detroit sound was all about.

Lead singer Jason Stollmeister is a genius at the guitar, and the rest of the band also excel. Stollmeister's husky voice is perfect for the songs he writes--at some points in the slower blues songs he almost seems to be crying as he sings... that's how much emotion his voice conveys.

The album's first single, "C'mon C'mon" as well as "The Fever" are the standout tracks here, but there are no bad songs on the record.

4 out of 5 stars A Ranged CD.......2005-02-27

All the tracks in this cd are very different from each other. I bought this cd having only heard Cmon Cmon on the radio a few times and was pleasently suprised to hear the variety in their songs. I highly recommend this cd.

5 out of 5 stars L'album de 2004.......2005-02-22
