Product Description
Ever since they came roaring out of Austin, Texas, the Fabulous Thunderbirds have inspired a whole generation of music lovers and roots-rock musicians. Original co-founder Kim Wilson spearheads this quintessential American band in its current hard-hitting lineup, featuring Wilson's signature vocals and harmonica, rising stars Kirk Fletcher and Nick Curran on guitars, and veteran T-Birds Jimi Bott on drums, Ronnie James Weber on bass, and Gene Taylor on keyboards.

Produced by Los Lobos' Steve Berlin and Kim Wilson, Painted On holds a few surprises, including eight brand-new compositions, a reworked Waylon Jennings song, a pure soul ballad, and vocal duets with guitarist Nick Curran and special guest Rachel Nagy of the Detroit Cobras. The title track (and first single) is a soulful rocker with a memorable hook that has "future T-Birds classic" written all over it. The songs draw from a variety of styles and influences, but they are all built solidly around the deep and unmistakable T-Birds groove.

5 out of 5 stars Astounding "Canyon"; "Rodeo" Rivals NYP.......2007-01-05

Close your eyes and be transported to the Canyon. In this remastering of a 1960 recording, Morton Gould shows his chops as a superlative conductor and interpreter of this Grofe classic. The work itself is wonderful, but Gould and his orchestra provide nuances that absolutely delight. Of the five movements of "Grand Canyon Suite", the final, "Cloudburst", ceases becoming music and is elevated to pure sensory experience. It is no longer notes on a page finely executed; it IS the sky, the wind, the sheets of rain (a sheer, shimmering slide of sound), the thunder, and it is perfect. The four prior movements are nearly as excellent, with the second, "Painted Desert", casting an eerie shadow over the listener's mind with spellbinding brush strokes. This is a performance delivered with painstaking care.

Gould's treatment of Copland's works, recorded three years earlier, were of great personal interest, as one of my earliest exposures to "serious" music was the great Bernstein recording of "Rodeo", and "Buckaroo Holiday" in particular. Surprisingly, Gould and company give the NYPO a run for its money. They are just as energized, brash and even raw (hear the horns, and it's fitting) as New York; ditto the "Gun Battle" episode of "Billy". Gould threw himself into Copland's scores and whipped his musicians into a frenzy when called for, and the results place Gould's readings of these two pieces of Americana right behind Bernstein.

This CD - beautifully remastered - is a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars Superb recordings of American classics........2004-04-27

I thoroughly agree with all other reviewers (though I wish some would spell Copland's name right!) Morton Gould conducts with great verve and sensitivity. "Rodeo" is terrific and it also includes the seldom heard "Honky-Tonk Interlude" which is a delight in itself.
The Grand Canyon Suite is a highlight with its marvellous orchestration and melodic richness. Although the score is influenced by a number of composers such as Dukas, Ravel, Respighi and even Richard Strauss, it nevertheless feels entirely
original. "On the trail" is beautifully rhythmical, one can really feel the trotting
of the donkeys, and the sound effects are pure joy. Note the
ee-ah-ing of the donkeys, so superbly part of the music. (somewhat reminescent of Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream overture.) The Cloudburst is a sonic triumph.
This recording comes from 1957, but digitally remastered. Sound is demonstration quality. Still probably the best available, highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Copland and Gould - LSC-2195.......2004-02-12

I've heard Copland conducting these two works on recordings and I've heard the famous NYPO/Bernstein's 1960 recording of these two works on Columbia Records, yet Gould and his Orchestra fills in the blank spaces that was left out in previous and recent recordings.

He takes his troup to NYC to Manhatten Center, in Oct of 1957, and have the legendary RCA producer, John Pfeiffer and Lewis Layton, produce and engineer this recording session to be encaptured on 3-track tape (where the "Billy the Kid" was released on RCA "New Orthophonic tape recording" - the BCS-130), then to eventual vinyl (LM/LSC-2195). Gould, being somewhat of an arrangement conductor in the 50's, manage to pull the stops out in how these two Copland pieces are to be presented-to where the listener can feel that they themselves are back in the Wild, Wild West of the 1880's. He doesn't rush through these two pieces like some other conductors do. Gould takes his time trying to tell the story within the music. He uses emphasis, emotion, tempo and dynamics where it should be per each chapter in a story. Excellent listening for all!

This BMG "Living Stereo" release of the LSC-2195 Copland/Gould is a faithful reproduction as it can be of the original vinyl release.

5 out of 5 stars Gould conducts Copland and Grofe.......2003-11-21

It may surprise some to discover that American composer/conductor Morton Gould conducted such fine performances of other American composers' music. These RCA Victor "Living Stereo" recordings are vivid, excellent proof that Gould was a really fine conductor and not just of his own music.

The performances of the suites from Copland's ballets "Billy the Kid" and "Rodeo" are among the best ever recorded. They benefit not only from Gould's wonderful sensitivity and appreciation but from excellent playing by the "pickup" orchestra and the still remarkable "Living Stereo" recording process, in which RCA used only three microphones and advanced mastering techniques.

Ferde Grofe's "Grand Canyon Suite" was a "labor of love" as the skilled composer/arranger spent considerable time carefully depicting his impressions of one of the greatest natural wonders of the world. Grofe had been a very successful arranger for Paul Whiteman and is still remembered for the very first orchestration of George Gershwin's "An American in Paris," premiered by Gershwin at the piano with Whiteman conducting in New York's Aeolian Hall in February 1924.

Grofe composed a number of original orchestral works in later years and the "Grand Canyon Suite" is probably his best. It contains memorable melodies and is skillfully orchestrated throughout. It so impressed Arturo Toscanini that he recorded it in 1945 for RCA Victor, under the supervision of the composer. Grofe himself conducted a recording of the suite for Everest Records in 1960. Gould's recording is excellent. The final movement, depicting a spectacular thunderstorm, is absolutely awesome. I think this recording may surpass an earlier favorite, also recorded for RCA Victor, by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston "Pops" Orchestra.

This is all very fun and very exciting American music.

5 out of 5 stars Superlative performance of Copeland.......1999-12-26

Billy the Kid & Rodeo were both etched in my soul when as a young boy I listened along with my mother. This performance by Morton Gould remains for me above any other that I have heard and I have heard many given my love for them. This is a re-issue of an original 3 microphone/3 track TRUE stero recording made by RCA in their 'Living Stero' series and originally recorded in 1957. A must have for Copeland listeners. It is a bonus that it also contains 'Grand Canyon Suite.'

A vibrant tribute to MGM's legendary confluence of brains, talent, hard work, ambition--and dare we say it?--massive egos, Singin' in the Rain long ago took its rightful place among the first rank of the studio's dizzying catalog of film musicals. This double-disc, 46-track 50th-anniversary edition features all of the film's familiar songs, as well as numerous outtakes and extended versions, many culled directly from the film's original recording masters. Its second disc also chronicles the film's clever--if studio imposed--self-referential musical gambit of recycling a slate of Arthur Freed/Nacio Herb Brown songs from Metro's first decade by including 14 of the originals, including performances by Jeanette McDonald, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, and Freed himself. Featuring a dozen previously unreleased recordings and an illustrated booklet containing the insightful reminiscences of the film's original writers, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, it's the ultimate musical companion to one of cinema's magical, enduring masterpieces. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars the perfect movie.......2007-03-10

My old Gene did it: the perfect movie, the perfect american history, the perfect music. Some people think musicals are "B" movies. I say them: look about the dream, the performance, the music.
Who can say what is beatiful? Look at faces of Gene and Stan during the shooting on the set: whole concentration and attention for everything.
This is a unique moment in their story, and in the story of cinema.
Unforgettable.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE MY FAVORITE SONG, AND THANKS TO THIS CD I CAN LISTEN TO IT ALL DAY LONG!!.......2007-01-28

I love Singin' in the Rain. It was the movie that made me like musicals, not those simple, mellow movies like South Pacific and the Sound of Music, but REAL musicals, with people like Fred Astaire or Eleanor Powell tapping their hearts out, or great singers like Frances Langford or Dick Powell putting over a song like they mean it.The Singin' in the Rain 2disc special edition introduced me to my favorite movie, the Broadway Melody of 1936, the MOST AMAZING MOVIE EVER! So I was so glad when my parents got me the soundtrack to Singin' in the Rain, and besides the music of the 1951 versions of the Nacio Herb Brown/Arthur Freed, there are also the original versions of the songs in their original movies. I am so glad that Rhino put the duet of Robert Taylor and June Knight singing I've Got a Feelin' You're Foolin' on this CD set! It's my favorite song, and now I can listen to it! Hooray!! It's the best song EVER!! There's also vocals of Charles King singing the Broadway Melody, which is great! And many more, like Bing Crosby, Frances Langford, Jeanette MacDonald, and other great singers I can't think of right now. This CD set is great, the sound is nice and un-staticy (mostly), there are 30-plus songs, and the price is phenomenal. I love my favorite song, and now I can listen to it all day long!! Yay! :)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Soundtrack to a Wonderful Movie.......2006-06-16

Yes, this is it--the first real musical I ever saw. Okay, I saw "Wizard of Oz" and "The Sound of Music", and I love both of those musicals dearly. I had even seen "My Fair Lady." I thought musicals were all like those. Until this one. I had never seen such dancing. And this CD causes me to relive the joy of the musical each time I listen to it. Complete with the tap sounds. I love that they included even the deleted songs. Now we just need a DVD that has all the deleted scenes in context. But the studio probably threw all those away. Oh well, our imaginations can take care of what is missing.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-03-20

This is a great CD of music for your family to listen to. Our family enjoys it very much.

4 out of 5 stars musical memories.......2006-03-14

I enjoyed this CD very much, as I remember seeing the movie years ago. I grew up watching MGM musicals and this was one of the best. I loved all of the wonderful songs that came from this movie. Great sound on this CD.

As "The King Of The World Blues Reviewer", I don't agree with some publications that listed this CD in the blues section. For the benefit of novice blues aficionado's, this Thunderbird group is "post" Jimmie Vaughn, among others. If I were to pick a category for this CD it would be in the pop rock area. If I were to review it in that area, which is not my "schtick", nor my desire, I would rate it a little more favorably. But this does not pass Shaq's test for any type of blues rating. So, if you're one of Shaq's worldwide blues followers, I wouldn't buy this CD. If you're a Mary Joe Shemply type (a generic alias) in Bismarck, North Dakota, who wants to rock a little, then buy it. Meanwhile, Shaq, needs to get back to the electric blues world, and has left the building!

3 out of 5 stars Painted On - Fab T-Birds.......2007-01-05

Kim Wilson is in good form in a band with great players, but it somehow nonetheless fails to really grab you. The early albums with J Vaughan are a very hard act to follow!

4 out of 5 stars FINALLY THE RIGHT MIX.......2006-01-03

After Jimmy Vaughn's departure it seemed the T-Birds were quickly becoming Kim Wilson's vanity project. The cohesiveness was gone, band members coming and going from each album to the next. However there is a new stability to this once vital band. Kirk Fletcher and Nick Curran have brought the birds back to the forefront of contemporary blues on this sparkling disc. Time has done wonders to Wilson's vocals. No longer the derivitive shouter his voice, despite the great instrumental prowess is the driving force. He also keeps things at a lively pace co-producing with Steve Berlin of Blasters and Los Lobos fame. Let's hope the revolving door is closed and a new and exciting chapter in this groups rich history will be written.

3 out of 5 stars New members give the Thunderbirds a new feel.......2005-10-02

This is a good FT album. The new guitar players add some unique style to the band. Kim Wilson sounds like the KW of old.

4 out of 5 stars The T-Birds still have it goin' on........2005-08-26

Kim Wilson, once again, rolls a new model of T-Bird off the assembly line. Where does he find these guys? Of course, piano pounder Gene Taylor is the most recognizable of this new line-up of Birds, having achieved his own notiriety in the '80s with California's roots-rock heroes The Blasters. But every other player in this new line-up are as adept as Taylor in delivering the raw blues-rock punch that we have grown to expect from one of America's greatest bands of the past 25 years. Top it all off with Wilson's soulful vocals and incendiary harp and you have one great CD. The T-Birds style may not be part of America's mainstream music scene anymore, but their significance in the musical history of this country is reaffirmed and enhanced with Painted On. I am especially fond of the retro "Only Daddy That'll Walk The Line". "Rock Candy" rocks in the same vein as "Rock This Place" and "Two Time Fool" is a hip shaker in the spirit of "I Believe I'm In Love". "Postman" delivers the solid blues groove that long ago established Kim Wilson as one of America's premier blues bosses. "Wild Cherry" features harp playing that would impress even the likes of James Cotton and Junior Wells. The only thing this CD lacks is a T-Birds classic like "Tuff Enough" or "Look At That Look At That". But if you love rock, blues, and soul, Painted On brings home the bacon in a way that few other bands can.

The Comedy Harmonists were an a close harmony group who recorded in Germany from '28 to the late '30's. They were harassed and force to disband because of Nazi disapproval of their semitic origins as well as their avant-guarde, jazz-oriented material. They sing here in German and English doing everything from folk songs to Tea for Two with clarity, musical grace and lightness. Their comic songs are very deft and witty. If you enjoy close harmonics, you will find this recording a revelation.

5 out of 5 stars Holly Golightly vs. Jesus.......2002-04-06

Holly Golightly has more syllables than Jesus, and also more good songs. She is vastly beautiful, and the picture on this cover pays her no flattery. Her music is well-built and completely jammy. Discovering her for the first time at The Showbox is the one reason I'm glad I ever spent a year in Seattle at all. She is the guilty indie pleasure that I enjoy with very few peers here in Las Vegas, this town of Top 40 lovers. If I can somehow convince her to move here, I will make a radio station and let her make the playlist.
P.S. Holly, if you're reading this, deciding if you should buy Painted On, please tell me what tracks 3 and 4 are about. They seem like the machinations of very disturbed flashbacks to childhood going-ons. Thanks, and have a terrific day.

Gerard Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony went right to the top of the pile with their pairing of a complete Billy the Kid and the "Four Dance Episode" from Rodeo. The accounts are stunningly well-recorded and well-played, vivid, colorful, and imaginatively characterized. --Ted Libbey

4 out of 5 stars If Only..........2001-02-11

The Seattle Symphony and Maestro Schwarz do a marvelous job on this classic masterpiece. They almost, but not quite, make up for the low quality recording. DELOS recorded this cd in the Opera House in Seattle 10 years ago. At the beginning of the "Sunrise" and "Painted Desert" movements the music is barely there and unless you have high quality playback equipment the accompanying noise almost overpowers the music. The same can be said of the horn echoes at the beginning of "Sunset." Playback on better equipment yields far better results but it seems DELOS would have known to "hold the microphones a little closer."

"Billy the Kid" and "Rodeo" are exceptional, particularly the familiar, "Hoedown".

The Seattle Symphony is magnificent as always. I would love to hear them do The Grand Canyon Suite live, WOW! I believe this performance should be considered "definitive." If only...

Intense from start to finish. you really get to feel the true sound of underOATH's music. beautifull renditions of the songs from "The Changing of Times" and "They're Only Chasing Safety." if you love underOATH's music, buy this instrumental.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-08-12

Though I cannot say this is the best tribute SQT has done, it is certainly up there. It captures the emotion, and you can even sing along with it. Over all, great. Also, check out Funeral, the tribute to MCR.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-12-24

Thomas Campion (1567-1620) was a poet as well as a musician, and his songs definately reflect this ability, for they could just as well be read as sung. Philip Rosseter ( his friend) states that his 118 songs were "superfluous blossomes of his deeper Studies," no doubt referring to his Latin poetry , or perhaps medicine, which was his profession. What Campion did better than Dowland, or any other English composer of the day, was to "couple my words and notes lovingly together, which will be much for him to doe that hath not power over both." It is best to listen to them in order of priority to poem, melody and lastly singer. His melodies are simplistic and unadorned by shocking harmony designed to overpower the weight of the word itself. T.S. Eliot was in no doubt about Campion's quality:"except for Shakespeare, the most accomplished master of rhymed lyric of his time."
The performance of these songs by Drew Minter (countertenor) accompanied by Paul O'Dette (lute) is really quite outstanding. I must say that this disc is so much better than Minter's other disc of lute songs "Sweeter Than Roses". His voice had a much clearer tone quality and he did not get 'nasal' or 'edgy' as he is prone to do. He kept his voice light and distinct with very neat diction. When he goes for a loud full sound like Michael Chance or David Daniels his voice is not pleasant to hear. But this album is very good and his emotional investment into each song was excellent. Just a very good LISTEN!!!!

    3 out of 5 stars Serious Drawback.......2006-04-08

Elizabethan Songs. Twenty-two songs by Thomas Campion (1567 – 1620), performed by Drew Minter (countertenor) and Paul O’Dette (lute).
Recorded in November 1989 at Bethel United Church of Christ, Manchester, Michigan.
Harmonia Mundi. Originally issued as HMU 907023, now re-issued as part of the budget-price Classical Express series as HMCX 3957023. Total time: 58’23”.

Thomas Campion was a contemporary of both Shakespeare and Dowland and was a medical doctor who wrote poetry which he also set to music. Drew Minter performs twenty-two of these here with his inimitable coppery countertenor, a voice which is, in fact, very beautiful, but needs considerable getting used to if you are new to it. (Minter sings at alto pitch, but nobody would mistake him for a female!) He is accompanied by master lutenist Paul O’Dette, whose contribution remains fairly quietly in the background. The songs themselves are, of course, in Elizabethan English, making them rather difficult to understand. And this is where this CD suffers a serious drawback: the texts are not printed in the thin CD booklet; instead, there is a note saying that they can be downloaded from the internet, but when I tried to visit the site mentioned (on more than one occasion recently), the server was down, the address unknown. I nevertheless enjoyed listening, but without really knowing what Minter was singing so delightfully about. Campion’s melodies sound to my ear a little “samish”, and I occasionally found myself wishing that the program had been interrupted by a lute solo or two.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant recital of Dowland contemporary.......2001-03-28

There is little overlap between this Campion CD and the similar recital featuring another American countertenor, Steven Rickards, on Naxos. However if forced to choose between the two note that the Naxos release includes sung texts, while this one from Classical Express does not. On the other hand O'Dette is a more characterful lute player.
