Eight seconds into track one, there's the voice: calming, hypnotic and seductive, it stands inimitable, disembarking like a sultry Midwest breeze and sticking to the ribs like a Delta afternoon. But the singer is also a talented songwriter, and Pieta Brown crafts sharp-eyed and spiritual tunes in the inherent mold of her folksinger father Greg Brown--and with the spirit of the Alabama upbringing by her mother--for a unique soundtrack of country blues, whispered folk and front-porch lullabies. Recorded live at Memphis' famed Ardent Studios, Pieta's third record expands on the minimalist production of her self-titled debut, and guitarist Bo Ramsey returns to ride shotgun, wrapping his inconspicuous blues licks around complex arrangements and the sessions' barn-burning rhythm section. Yet that slide guitar on the sizzling title song belongs to Pieta, and she resonates like the queen of cool, begging to "put on Jimmy Vaughn" so we can "dance all day long." If the next dance is in the cool, I'm there. --Scott Holter

Product Description
Recorded live at Ardent Studios in Memphis, In the Cool is a collection of deep-grooved songs that are full of meaning and images…some fixed, many open to interpretation. They represent not only her own experiences, but also a very real musical conversation with guitarist/co-producer Bo Ramsey (Greg Brown, Lucinda Williams). When Pieta was 17 she went to see Ramsey play for the first time, and leaning all alone against a barroom wall, she was mesmerized. She remembers thinking matter-of-factly, "Someday I’m gonna play music with that guy." They’ve been friends ever since, and years later, their connection can be felt tangibly throughout In the Cool, lending the record a quality of home, of words unspoken.

In the Cool is remarkable and real, a truly human catch-in-the-throat, a sequence of personal moments simmering beneath a surface of professional edge, stellar production and exceptional musicianship. Contributing to this is an all-star lineup including bassist Hutch Hutchinson (Bonnie Raitt), bassist Dave Jacques (John Prine), keyboardist Kevin McKendree(Delbert McClinton, Etta James, Lee Roy Parnell) and drummer Bryan Owings (Buddy & Julie Miller, Shelby Lynne).

If you're wondering how Green Day managed to become the biggest punk band in the world, take a look at Bullet in a Bible. Recorded at their June 2005 two-night run at Milton Keynes National Bowl in England, this combined CD/DVD sees these former bong-hitting Californian dropouts embracing political activism, pantomime hilarity, and all the fripperies of a rock opera--and excelling at all three.

The first half is essentially a run-through of the group's 2004 album American Idiot, complete with anti-American rabble-rousing and a set of barbed insults tossed back at the "rednecks" across the pond. That out of the way, the band careen into a sort of greatest-hits set, with the likes of "Longview" and "Hitchin' a Ride" sharing space with a brass-laden "King for a Day" that sees Billie Joe Armstrong prancing around the stage in crown and ermine cape, singing snatches of Lulu's "Shout" and Eric Idle's "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life." Tremendously silly, but Green Day have managed to figure out how to play it like showmen without resorting to juvenile puerility or morphing into corporate yes-men, and that's a way harder trick than it looks. --Louis Pattison

From two performances filmed in June 2005 before 65,000 fans, both in Milton Keynes in England, to the DVD's documentary segments following the band members around that city as they visit a war museum and various pubs, and share in-depth insights on the making and meaning of American Idiot, Green Day is #1 with a Bullet in a Bible. 4 out of 5 stars Electrifying.......2007-07-02

On the 'Bullet in a Bible' DVD, Billie Joe Armstrong says that some bands worry about how they would create intimacy in front of a crowd of 65,000, but said that for Green Day it was irrelevant as they weren't trying to create intimacy, they were trying to create an event. Ultimately that's what 'Bullet in a Bible' is, an event, a fantastic spectacle.

The band open with a spine tingling version of their newer hits with 'American Idiot' and 'Holiday' leading the line. They also show how well 'Jesus of Suburbia' works when performed live. After these songs, Green Day bring their newer, more uninitiated fans through some of the earlier Green Day catalogue, with quality performances of, among other songs, 'Longview', 'Basket Case' and 'Minority'. These performances should give an electrified jolt to all Green Day fans, new and old.

During the encore, Billy Joe brings the only moment of the before eschewed intimacy to the concert, with his closing rendition of 'Good Riddance'. This brings a beautiful close to another fantastic show by the boys from California.

5 out of 5 stars This one converted me.......2007-04-13

I love lots of different rock music, but I had never been sold on Green Day. Something about their music, and especially the production of their sound on their studio albums, did not appeal to me. This DVD/Cd combo changed my mind and got me listening to some songs over and over again. It has a frenetic energy that I didn't find in their studio work. I don't much like the unnecessary cussing, but I can overlook it when the songs are this good. I find it amusing to see a punk band use so many pretty vocal harmonies. Songs I couldn't bear to listen to on the albums suddenly were quite good here in concert, such as 'Basket Case' and 'Brain Stew'. Most of the stuff from 'American Idiot' is great here also.

5 out of 5 stars Energizing performance, great rock/punk music.......2007-03-14

For someone who grew up with rock music, was a child in the 60s, a teen and young adult in the 70s, and witnessed the early stages of punk, also in the 70s, this album/DVD came as something of a revelation. Although I've been more or less out of the loop in terms of both rock and punk for some years, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this disc--a "greatest hits" compilation leaning heavily on the "American Idiot" album--and watching the concert DVD. The songs belong to my daughter's generation, but geriatric as I am, I think the music is excellent, and the lyrics pretty intelligent, sometimes even searing. The DVD is fun to watch, too; the frenetic editing and choppy visuals don't really bother me.

I gather that some of the concert was cut from both disc and and film, but what is presented is very fine. The band, with two back up musicians, launch themselves into the American Idiot rock opera with a vengeance (complete with political commentary), and some older, vintage Green Day songs, like "Basket Case," and the mega-hit "Good Riddance," to the immense enthusiasm of the huge Brit crowd at the Milton Keynes National Bowl. Selections highlight the versatility of the group, which can belt out punk lyrics of anger and alienation, hard-hitting rock numbers, or melancholy ballads like "Wake Me Up When September Ends," without missing a beat. All three musicians seem powered up and at the top of their game, and Billie Joe Armstrong, an energizer bunny if there ever was one, keeps the energy level high from start to finish with his remarkable voice (a flexible tenor with an occasional, pleasing quaver) and onstage antics.

To add to all of this, the members of Green Day--baby faced, green eyed Billie Joe, the lean, intense Mike Dirnt, affable Tre Cool with his inimitable clowning--have an undeniable visual appeal than comes across well in the concert DVD, as it has in their videos (viewable on the Green Day website).

5 out of 5 stars Truth.......2007-02-12

Green Day is the largest band in the world right now,
the only bad to make the punk rock opera that stormed
the world over. people critisize them because they are jealous.
They are better and more talented them "Mee-tall-ica" and
rap "hustlers" "iz u with ma" (makes no sense) and they're angry
cuz they're going strong 18 years now and they are capable of real music.
hats to those who had good feedback for this incredible album

Bad critics are jealous too.
But of course they'll deny it like
all cowards in this world.

Lyric and thoughtful, pianist Bill Evans proved an urbane bridge between the early bop style of Bud Powell and playful funk of Horace Silver, and the later, modern approach of pianists like Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Keith Jarrett (indeed, Jarrett went as far as to record with Evans's backup band of drummer Paul Motian and bassist Gary Peacock). Evans's second album as a leader, Portrait in Jazz combines a pair of originals--"Blue in Green" and "Peri's Scope"--with a handful of show tunes and standards, including a version of "Someday My Prince Will Come" that pre-dates Miles Davis's adaptation. With a preference for irregular phrasing and a taste for unusual chord spellings, Evans was frequently able to recast old chestnuts and tired warhorses into new gems and spirited charges, as he does here with "Witchcraft," "Spring Is Here," and "When I Fall in Love." And although he recorded in many different formats throughout his career, including duets with himself, the power and beauty of Evans's trios helped him lay a special claim to that grouping. --Fred Goodman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-04-16

This is my seventh Evans recording and it is like I am getting to know him all over again. This album has energy, freshness and joy that just isn't there on later recordings. The recording quality is more than satisfactory. The group's playing is smart and engaging with a skillful balance between technical skill and understated musicality. The playfulness brought to standards like Witchcraft is a welcome contrast to many of his later more brooding works. LaFaro and Motian provide their legendary support and interplay with their typcial flair. This was definitely a high point for Evans, before drugs, bad health and personal problems got in the way. No Evans collection would be complete without this recording.

5 out of 5 stars Expressive playing!.......2007-03-09

The artistic greatness of Bill Evans resides in his spelling treatment of the piano. He not only plays the keyboard; he plays with the instrument and certainly he would seem to establish with it a sort of spiritual connection making of it an extension this inner thoughts and moods.

That's why there have been so many versions about his compositions and however, just a few have been able to perform and express with such kind of feeling and inspiration the core of his compositions.

This is at least to my view, the main reason I recognize in him the essence of the genius. As Midas King all what he played it was pure gold.

5 out of 5 stars another evans album you should have........2007-02-10

bill evans is perhaps the most satisfying piano player to get into my ears. the lyrical beauty of his playing is magical for late nights spent reading and listening to music. "the village vanguard recordings" are my favorite bill evans, but this comes up a close second. buy with confidence if you love music steeped in beauty.

5 out of 5 stars a revelation.......2006-08-15

I thought I knew Evans' music pretty well, but this disc (which I, too, sought out after hearing Paul Motian recommend it in his "Fresh Air" interview) came as something of a revelation.

Rarely have I heard Evans play with so much energy. Some of his lines here even call to mind Bud Powell, who is not someone I would ordinarily associate with Evans. His whole approach on this disc - attack, development of ideas, use of dissonance - is more aggressive than on most of his other recordings.

This energy, though, doesn't come at the expense of lyricism. This CD has more than its share of heartbreakingly beautiful moments. Is there any ballad more affecting than (in Evans' hands) "When I Fall In Love"?

5 out of 5 stars Paul Motian's fave with Bill Evans.......2006-03-14

On NPR's Fresh Air, Motian said this was his favorite recording that he made with Bill Evans. Pretty good recommendation!

It doesn't get much better than this: a full night of Miles Davis captured live in his prime at an intimate jazz club. In 1961, Davis, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, and drummer Jimmy Cobb recorded at San Francisco's legendary Blackhawk. Originally released as two LPs, the complete sets, with nine previously unissued tracks, have been compiled in this superb, digitally-remastered, two-CD set. Davis's pithy and poetic trumpet tones signature a number of standards and original compositions. Backed by Kelly's in-the-pocket pianisms, Cobb's articulate drumwork, Chamber's intelligent basslines, and Mobley's Dexter Gordon-ish sax tones, Davis bares his wounded and wonderful musical soul to an engaging and enthralled audience. The elongated and illuminated renditions of the quicksilver modal number "So What," the dancing "On Green Dolphin Street," and the Latin-tinged "Neo" bridge the 1959 masterpiece LP Kind of Blue and the forthcoming '60s superband with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. The scene-stealer on this date is Mobley. His ebullient tone and sterling improvisations remind us of Miles Davis's equally impressive talents and a bandleader. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

4 out of 5 stars Goodnights........2007-05-19

This is a very good purchase for fans of Miles Davis and the sound of that time. It is a double album but many of the tracks are redundant. If you like the live format, and are interested in these particular performers, this is a
"must have" album.

5 out of 5 stars ONLY ONE WORD: MAGIC.......2007-02-03

First, sorry for my english. If you close your eyes , you can feel the ambiance of the Blackhawk.
Great the rythim section, Winton Kelly is the third leader. Hank Mobley is one of my favourites, but we can understand the legend of champions of middleweight's tenors. His sound i't's so sweat, don't have the power of Gordon, Coltrane, Shorter. And Miles, it's Miles, that's it's enough.
I recomand listen every record two o three times, every time put your attention in a different instrument of the song.

4 out of 5 stars Mobley and Kelly play above themselves.......2006-12-01

I've known every note of the Friday Night version of "On Green Dolphin Street" since I was 15 years old -- except for the first part of Hank Mobley's solo, which was edited out for the Columbia anthology I bought. As I got to know the works of Miles Davis, I quickly realized that the song was recorded at the Blackhawk, but reissue after reissue left it out, and I cursed Columbia Records for being a bunch of idiots. But here it is, with Mobley's entire solo included, along with many other riches whose value will depend on the listener. For me, both versions of "If I were a Bell" are spectacular examples of a happiness one doesn't expect from Miles Davis (indeed, his last few notes on the Friday night version are suddenly sad, which makes a beautiful coda to the performance). The Saturday night version of "On Green Dolphin Street" is more mellow and less inspired, but the Friday version makes up for that. There is an almost menacing quality to the melody and to Miles Davis's solo, worlds apart from the luminous version recorded with Coltrane and Adderley and Bill Evans in 1958.
Above all, Hank Mobley and Wynton Kelly reached the peak of their careers that weekend. They were never as good before or after, and that is the doing of Miles Davis, who has been justly called the greatest LEADER in modern jazz. He goaded his musicians to play above themselves, and this is the prime example. For me, the best soloist on all four CDs is Kelly, who plays with a joy and confidence that are the hallmark of the set.

5 out of 5 stars Let The Music Do The Talking.......2006-11-24

With the classic cover photo from the original 2-lp set intact, the four sets covering two nights at the legendary Blackhawk nightclub in San Francisco shows the potential of re-releasing live material by allowing the unedited tapes to let the music take the listener to great heights through a group that briefly backed Miles.

The April 21-22, 1961, gigs featured what some critics deemed a transitional band of Wynton Kelly (p), Paul Chambers (b), Jimmy Cobb (d) and Hank Mobley (sax). Because the group followed the quintet with John Coltrane and preceeded the historical sessions with Wayne Shorter, the ensemble - in my opinion - does not get the acclaim it truly deserves.

To hear the sets without any editing shows how each song builds upon one another and subtly shape into a dynamic that truly makes for an experience of a lifetime on stage and in the audience. The leadership and playing of Miles is nothing short of spectacular as he pushes each musician to quickly create beautiful textures on a majestic tapestry.

It is not the time a group is together, but what each member does with the studio sessions and on stage, that defines brilliance. The Blackhawk sets are a reminder of the power Miles had in challenging musicians and the audience to redefine the art of jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Get in your time machine, close the door, and shut your eyes...........2006-11-10

I'm going to make this short: buy this album--you won't regret it! Instead of studio re-takes, overdubs and an altered order of songs like you get with most live recordings, this is the way it went down that evening in 1961. And you are THERE, at a table near the stage, at the Blackhawk club as the players stroll out, set up the first song, count it in and blass off. Each of the four sets unfolds exactly as it happened that night---completely unedited. Miles in charge, as always, expecting the very best tonight from pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, and drummer Jimmy Cobb. And they repond, launching themselves higher and higher, through the stratosphere, up into the ether where Miles hangs out, circling him, trading punches with him, diving ducking and weaving with him. No one knows what's going to happen next-this is live jazz--live without a net. You can almost feel the chemistry between the players. Close your eyes and put on the headphones if you really want to get there. And hang on!

In 1952, guitar virtuoso Johnny Smith began recording for Teddy Reig's Roost Records and he hit big with his first session. Adding Stan Getz to his regular quartet, he created a spellbinding version of "Moonlight In Vermont" which became a best-selling record far beyond the jazz audience.

Reig paired Smith with Getz again and then with Zoot Sims and Paul Quinichette. While they never matched their first hit in sales, the created some great jazz. All 16 tunes by Smith with these tenor giants are gathered on this CD, remastered in 24 but from the original tapes.

5 out of 5 stars Mood Swings.......2006-07-31

In 1954, I started college as a guitar major, and was entranced by guitarists who could play "standards" in a manner that erased reality and created a mood that enveloped listeners. In those days, Johnny Smith was in the forefront of the pack. Now years later, listening to this CD still creates a mellow mood. I plan to use this CD as a holiday gift for my offspring. I know they will benefit from this timeless music, as will any person of any age.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! What an album.......2006-07-29

I can point to a few albums that really got me into jazz and this is one. Johnny plays on this album with Stan Getz and others. It is a great album. The title song was the Downbeat song of the year for 1952. One knock on Johnny Smith is that he wasn't jazz mainly because his playing was so clean--it sounded too rehearsed, too clean. There are a few outtakes one the CD that will put that to rest. Johnny, himself, admitted he never really thought of himself as a "jazz" guitarist, but more of a session musician. He was on staff with the NBC orchestra back in the day. I think one thing is clear though and this CD bears it out is that Johnny is an important guitarist in the history of jazz guitar. He is the connection between Charlie Christian, and Django Reinhardt to more contemporary players. It's ironic how a man with such a common name made such beautiful music.

5 out of 5 stars Belongs in any Jazz Collection.......2005-09-26

This album is a jazz classic and definately belongs in any collection. Johnny Smith guitar style is fairly unique and while technically brilliant, there's always a purpose to the soloing. Also Stan Getz is just wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars Alot of hints of modern jazz in this ol' album.......2004-06-14

This guy was really a great guitarist, and songwritter. On this album he has some of the most recognizeable jazz tunes ever, such as the classic 'yesterday'. This album really helps me close in the gap between old jazz, and modern jazz. He showcases alot of what was to come in the near future. This is a very good jazz album id recommend to any fan of jazz.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2006-08-19

I bought this as a "thank you" for a jazz lover. It was so outstanding, I had to borrow it myself! It's now on my own Wish List :-) Great for harp lovers, jazz lovers, music lovers - it covers it all!

5 out of 5 stars Unique and beautiful jazz .......2006-03-15

If I had to make a list of favorite obscure CDs this would surely be on it. I'd recommend this to just about anyone with an interest in jazz, especially since this is really two great albums compiled on one CD. I've never heard the harp played anything like this, like some sort of otherworldly guitar. And the flutist Frank Wess is wonderful as well. This is one I keep coming back to when I want to listen to something that just makes me feel good. The whole group just works together so well, at times approaching the lyrical intensity of just about anything I can think of short of Bill Evans. Roy Haynes (or Arthur Taylor) on drums is as always brilliant. I almost wonder why this isn't considered a jazz classic, and this certainly transcends any kind of novelty interest in a jazz harpist or a female jazz instrumentalist.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Sound.......2002-07-04

I bought this album because I wanted to hear some new some new instruments playing jazz, and the sound samples of this album at amazon.com were divine, so I bought this album straight away. I was not disappointed.

In accompaniment to Frank Wess's exemplary flute solos, Ashby plays her harp more like a guitar, and in her own solos, more like a piano. But rest assured, you know you're hearing a harp when you listen, and there's almost nothing else out there that sounds like this. Like the liner notes say, this is not "the hairiest jazz"--at times you can hear very classical patterns, but that just adds to the uniqueness. So far my favorite is the final track from the "Hip Harp" half of the CD, called There's a Small Hotel.

I disagree with the other reviewer's comment that "intonation is a problem" and think that their statement that intonation problems were common in jazz at that time is way off base. The recording is from the 1950s and at time there is some definitely audible fuzz on some of the tracks, but the musicians on this album are consummate professionals and you can hear it in their playing.

I urge anyone interested in bebop jazz or in the harp to buy this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Yes, there is such a thing as "jazz harp.".......1998-09-15

This album is actually a combination of 2 previously released LPs. It is unique in its flavor of straight-ahead jazz for the harp. The instrumentation is Harp, Flute, Bass, and Drums. While intonation is often a problem (as was generally the case in jazz at that time), the overall performance is amazingly merit-worthy, well beyond the novelty aspect. Dorothy's ability to improvise on the harp is still unmatched to this day. It is well worth the buy for anyone interested in the still-infant world of "Jazz Harp."

5 out of 5 stars All highs and no lows!.......2007-01-04

If your a fan of close vocal harmonies and great arrangements you'll really enjoy this recording. And if the vocal arranging sounds familiar, it's because Gene Puerling (baritone, I think) did most of the writing for this group. You may be more familiar with his writing for the Singers Unlimited as well as his prevalent influence on the debut recording of the jazz vocal group, Take 6.
Also worth mentioning is the tremendous performance by the members of the Frank Comstock Orchestra. As a trumpet player, I would love to know who was on that session becaause they're all amazing!

    5 out of 5 stars Elegant Kitsch.......2000-11-23

As a fan of standards in vocal jazz (Biiiiilllie!), and contemporary vocally-oriented music (i.e. Zap Mama, Bobby Mc Happy) the Hi-Lo's are a real treat- a singular American listening experience. Yes, there is the unavoidable mid-century kitsch factor, but who doesn't appreciate the pure artistic value of Herb Alpert every now and again? Truthfully, the Hi-Lo's unwaivering voices and sensitive arrangements bubble new breadth into old standards, with all the freshness of a tasty loaf of Wonder Bread. Try to listen to the Hi-Lo's with the same keen sagacity you would John Coltrane (or better yet McCoy Tyner)

2 out of 5 stars not really fireworks.......2007-07-11

Stan the Man, the greastest sax player of all time should have made a number of albums with Jeru - the best baritone of all time (since his better playing mentor Serge Chaloff died off young). Both were Cool both West Coast Jazz. The owner of Verve put them together. But there is only this one.

In order to fool the listener, they switch instuments at one point! Getz plays baritone and Mulligan plays tenor. They should have made great music togehter but the results are adequate but don't live up to what each of the Cool Jazz greats did on other albums where they were out front. The Getz and Bill Evans albums are also pretty mediocre. Maybe too many egos?

The best series of duet albums Getz did (other than piano with Al Haig or Kenny Barrons) was with Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone.

Why this one isn't that great, I don't know.

5 out of 5 stars Stan Getz and Gerry Mulligan together.......2007-04-04

Very together work.. fantastic counterpoint..they play like one instrument

    5 out of 5 stars Our Delight.......2006-07-31

Jazz is our delight brother cats. Life is so boring sometimes that you and I, my jazz friends, deserve to take a pause and enjoy the marvel of music to lift us up. You can't find a more delightful listening experience than this encounter between Getz and Jeru. It is fantastic believe me. This record is something that when I turn back to it, it makes me discover again why I love jazz. It has been one of the first jazz albums I did buy, something like 15 years ago ... it's still refreshing after all these years. It is light, funny, swinging, splendid ... it is simply one of the best examples of Jazz you can find out there. Jazz the fifties way of course, not that thing that today some people call jazz that is unbelievably boring. This is Jazz. And you can't stop to stomp your feet. You have a fantastic rhythmn section, Stan Levey and Ray Brown, MEN, so the swing is garanteed =)))))). Lou Levey played the piano (one of the best in the west coast movement). Than you have a couple of the best soloists that EVER graced the history of Jazz music, Stan Getz and Gerry Mulligan (THE man who plays the bari, nothing more to add here). The program begins with the splendid "Let's fall in love" and it's all there. They're all swingers except for the wonderful tune "A ballad" which is, of course, a ballad. You evena have a Charlie Parker number, Scrapple. The joy of swing, a music that these guys plays perfectly, light as butterflies, deep as oceans. THEY'RE TRUE MASTER!!! Every tune is a master interpretations. Than Stan and Jeru change horns and demonstrate to us (if necessary) how good thay could play with another type of instrument. It is simply a perfect album, jazzcats, if you don't own it... YOU SHOULD. YOU SHOULD.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar example of simultaneous improvisation.......2005-09-12

Stan & Gerry play beautifully on this recording. Their energy is infectious, their sound is full, and their ideas are spontaneous and creative.

On almost all the cuts you'll hear Stan & Gerry improvising on the same chorus. They do it so well you almost don't realize it's happening unless you really listen. This kind of playing is impossible without the big ears both these guys had.

The rhythm section is great as well, but the horns are what stand out in my memory.

Reaching deep into its cavernous vaults, Verve has extracted a rich bountiful of moody and sentimental jazz, perfect for those long, expectant evenings or those equally long, rain-filled days. Nicely packaged with nostalgic, sepia-toned photographs on both the box and each individual CD, A Jazz Romance contains nearly 60 songs guaranteed to set a distinctly low- keyed mood, equal parts sultry and sad. The vast majority of the material is from bygone days of the '40s and '50s, with the more recent entries retaining that flavor. The four discs are entitled In Dreams, Ever, Believing, and Always. They're rather interchangeable, sharing many of the same artists and each having as many vocals as instrumentals, yet each does have some distinction from the others.

In Dreams features the great saxophones of Johnny Hodges on "The Last Time I Saw Paris" and Ben Webster on "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning." Ever has marvelous versions of "My Man" by Sarah Vaughn and "The Shadow of Your Smile" by Dexter Gordon. Believing contains a contemporaneous version of "Some Other Time" by guitarist Mark Whitfield and Diana Krall, along with an outstanding example of Rahsaan Roland Kirk's versatility on "Alfie." Always, perhaps the dreamiest of the lot, has Chet Baker on "Alone Together," Illinois Jacquet on "Star Dust," and Stan Getz doing "Thanks for the Memories." Concentrating exclusively on the romantic side of jazz, this compilation contains an abundance of subtle, emotional music offering great listening in addition to setting the all-important mood. --Wally Shoup

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An absolutely stunning collection.......2002-12-10

Ballads, I believe, are the real test of musicianship. And this collection has a judicious and delicious selection which is perhaps the best balanced one I know featuring the all time great moments - Clifford Brown's treatment of Rodgers and Harts Where or When will bring tears to your eyes - as well as quirky less known works - If the Moon Turns Green sung by Billy Holiday - the "old", Ben Webster, along with the "new" Mark Whitfield. Please don't think this is or should be "background" music. You only have to listen to Bill Evans playing with Paul Motian and Gary Peacock on CD1 to realise this is a collection of some of the greatest moments in 20th Century music, regardless of genre.

    4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2002-02-22

This selection contains a bunch of great cuts and a few that I could live without, especially the Blossom Dearie tracks. However, as opposed to most collections with weak tracks, this one flows along so well that it is a pleasure to put all four CDS on and let it play in the background on a quiet evening "In." I prefer the companion 4 CD set called "A Night Out with Verve." I would recommend "Out" over "In."

5 out of 5 stars Jazz novice opinion.......2002-02-11

I am a complete novice when it comes to Jazz. Don't know much about it except that I enjoy it. I have to say this set of CD's is a great mood-setter. Definitely softens the atmosphere and relaxes the body and soul. Great music for a night of serenity and romance

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Sampling of Wonderful Performances.......2001-12-28

I put this cd set on my Amazon wishlist, and was very pleased to get it as a gift from my lover. All the old familiar songs, together with songs that I think I remember from my childhood, transport me to space where romance and sentmentality feel like comfortable old wool sweater. Think I'll just sit back... sip some good hot coffee..and hope the boyfriend joins me on the couch

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Follow-up to 'A Night Out with Verve' box.......2001-12-19

Beautiful. Billie Holiday blends seamlessly into Dinah Washington into Johnny Hodges into... this four box is the perfect background atmosphere for your swank cocktail party or that evening of candlelight romance. The compilers have collected a remarkable selection of music from classic Verve jazz heavyweights like Elle and Louie, Sarah Vaughan, Clifford Brown, Coleman Hawkins to, surprisingly, a few lesser known French artists such as Michael Legrand (who wrote the score for the French film 'Les Parapluies De Cherbourg') and Laura Fygi. This is a highly recommended classic jazz collection that will beautifully compliment your romantic evening in and will fit nicely into any classic jazz lovers music collection.

    Amazon.com Music Reviews

In a rhythm and blues era when not just rappers but most singers as well try to outdo each other with the biggest beats, the roughest vocals, and the rawest attitudes, Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds swims against the tide on For the Cool in You, a collection of understated, satiny romantic soul. It's a big gamble, for such an evocation of Smokey Robinson's "Quiet Storm" in 1993 invites charges of wimpiness and crossover sell-out. The charges are often accurate, for it's very hard to do atmospheric pop-soul without tumbling down the slippery slope of sentimentality. The triumph of "For the Cool in You" is that it avoids just that danger by building the songs on rhythmic and harmonic tensions that are no less effective for being subtly tucked behind the seemingly serene vocals. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars tight Album by Babyface.......2007-05-15

along with R.kelly, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Lionel Richie, Babyface for me is in that list of the Most Important Living Artists. not only has he left a lasting mark as a Songwriter and Producer for others, but his solo career was also banging as well and this Album is tight and is my last Fav Babyface album. the title track was smooth as was "Lady,Lady", when can I see you again", and Our feelings. Babyface truly showcased his versatility as a All Around Artist. Babyface was tough in the 80's and 90's. this Album along with R.Kelly's 12 Play were my two most played albums that i grooved to back in 94. tight album by Face.

4 out of 5 stars When R&B was just that.......2006-04-27

This is a Babyface classic and in my personal opinion the only "must-have" Babyface LP that should be in any R&B lovers collection.

Babyface (who, incidentally graduated from my high school -- Indianapolis North Central representin' ... sorry, had 2 do a quick shout out) is a megaproducer who'll go down in history and always be remembered for his hitmaking with basically everybody who's anybody.

However, as a singer and solo artist, his career for the most part rightfully took a back seat to more seasoned and charismatic vocalists of various stages of late 20th Century R&B (Keith Sweat, Bobby Brown, Al B. Sure, R. Kelly, Brian McKnight, D'Angelo, Maxwell, Usher, Joe ... there was always someone out harder and stronger e'ery time 'Face dropped an LP of his own).

However, listening to "For the Cool in You" 13 years after its release is a sweet reminder of the way things used to be.

Back in the day, R&B singers didn't HAVE to have rappers and multiple artist collaborations on their LPs to get noticed -- and "For the Cool in You" is an LP that's 100% 'Face and 100% R&B.

Babyface doesn't have a powerful voice or a deeply soulful voice. I can only offer that his swagger is more laid back and more conservative.

But sometimes less is more. That's what you get here.

The title track, "Lady, Lady, Lady," "And Our Feelings, "Never Keeping Secrets" and "When Can I See You Again" are all slow to midtempo tracks more appropriate for down time, perhaps low background music at your desk/on the job or just plain old great music to unwind to.

Babyface got the ladies hooked on this LP b/c he comes correct with clear, simple, honest and heartfelt lyrics.

This album is proof you don't always need Usher's kind of high energy, Janet Jackson-esque dance-track-ability or beggin' ass Keith Sweat's persona to tell that special someone how you really feel about them.

    Short, sweet and cool.

    Recommended LP!!!!

5 out of 5 stars So worth it.......2006-02-09

This is definitely a good buy. I owned a copy when it came out and it went missing. I have for a while been meaning to replace it and glad I did. It took me back down memory lane , but also, it brought back the joy I experienced listening to this. Definitely his best album in my view.

For The Cool In You is the follow-up to Babyface's debut solo career and did not lose his step from Tender Lover. This LP was entirely produced by Babyface, L.A. Reid & Daryl Simmons and Face wrote and or co-wrote eleven of the twelve featured songs on here. The only one that was not is a remake of "You Are So Beautiful" and it is just that. The formula here is good wholesome R&B with a pop twist to it. As for a standout, the acoustic driven "When Can I See You Again" balances this album for a more sincere feeling. The two titles that are more or less up-tempo is the title track and "Saturday" as the remainder is either slow or laid back. Lyrically Face has captured the full extent of a true relationship from asking for the initial commitment in "Lady, Lady" to the devastating breakup in "And Our Feelings". But, this is Babyface and one should expect nothing but the best.

This CD is OK, certainly not Babyface's best. The best songs are the title track & "Well Alright". The other 2 remixes of "For the Cool in You" were unnecessary & not that great. Alot of the stuff on here is on the slower side, not my cup of tea. Run out to get his greatest hits CD if you want classic Babyface with all the great rhythm & hooks that we've come to expect from this wonderful artist.
