With Darius Rucker's ringing baritone and Mark Bryan's muscular guitar framing Jim Sonefeld's bluesy, energetic southern folk rock tunes, it's easy to understand its success: It's the kind of thoroughly likable album people sing along with on the car radio. When Rucker demands, "Stand up and let me see you smile," there's something that feels real and convincing behind it; sure, it's a formula, but a sincere one, and it works over and over again. Songs like "Let Her Cry," "Hold My Hand," and "Running from an Angel" lay down the rhythm for a cohesive, feel-good collection. Being in college in the mid-90's , who didn't hear Hootie on their college rock station, and who didn't own this album. I dislike the fact that some people call this band a "one-hit" wonder. Yes, their first album (this one) was their most gigantic, but spawned 5 hits and other great songs. And their next album was no slouch either, selling 3+ million. Their sound is strong, original, and a great marker of that time, but it still is fresh today. A must have album in any collection of rock, many may try to imitate this sound, but nothing quite fits the nitch like Hootie and the Blowfish.

Hootie and the Blowhards.......2007-01-04

This is perhaps one of the worst albums ever produced. While there are undeniably moments of pop catchiness, they fade within seconds. Furthermore, if you are masochist enough to subject yourself to any footage of the act, you will find a revolting arrogance that is so dreadfully misplaced that it will turn your stomach. The next time that you find yourself ever-so-briefly caught in that forgetful moment you will want to immediately destroy the device from which their putrid music emanates.

Yeah, Darius was a mumbler. But, so was every other successful frontman in those days.

It's funny what time does to an album like this. Cracked Rear View became a roaring success, then the public turned it's back on the band. Years later, nostalgia seeps in, people dust off their copy and give it another spin. Maybe they were a little hard on Hootie after the hype machine got cranked up to 11. Their career certainly crashed and burned, but they're not to blame. It's the industry's marketing gimmicks and the fickle public who never gave this band a second shot.

But, that's all over. What's left is a pile of albums nobody ever listened to and this one. It's ashame people aren't as turned off by hype these days as they were back then, because I can think of a hundred worse "artists" off the top of my head dominating today's Top 40 who couldn't hold a candle to Hootie & The Blowfish's talents.

Give these guys a second chance, because they DO have talent.

This album is awesome... There is a reason that it sold 16+ million copies. Unfortunately it was overplayed and backlashed on the band, as is most music today. I will today and will always say that this is one of the best albums from the 90's/00's, as are all 6 of their albums.

Doesn't Age Too Well.......2006-10-17

I will admit that I am perhaps viewing (listening to?) the record with a jaundiced eye (ear?), but as an occasional fan of Hootie and the Blowfish, it seems to me like this, of all their records, is the one that has aged with the least grace and comportment. That's not to say that it's a terrible piece of music, but rather that, at this point in my life, it is almost never what I want to listen to.

Perhaps I should clarify. This record is overplayed in ways that only truly abnormal cultural phenomenae can be overplayed. This record is overplayed the same way that Stairway to Heaven (and pretty much all of Led Zeppelin IV) is overplayed on classic rock stations. I was an adolescent in the nineties, and between listening to this music on the radio and listening to it on my own, I'm pretty much done with it.

That costs the record a star. Well, not just that. It's also not really the greatest musical adventure the group ever embarked upon. It's good, but I'm frankly a bigger fan of Fairweather Johnson (as an album) or Musical Chairs (for individual songs).

But, buying recommendations are what we're here for. If you're just a regular person looking for pretty much every Hootie and the Blowfish song you want, this is the record to get. This is the one that launched the band, and the one from which most of their radio songs are still drawn. And, truth be told, it's a solid record and a good addition to any collection. If, however, you're looking for the best that the band's done to date (to the extent of my knowledge--I lost track of them during the hiatus after the failure of Musical Chairs), I'd go to Fairweather Johnson first. If you don't like pop music at all, I'd steer clear entirely--you'll find nothing on this album to transform your opinion of the genre.

Hootie & the Blowfish come from South Carolina, but their music resembles the Northeastern bar-band sound of Southside Johnny, Beaver Brown, and the like. This combination of frat-rock guitars, R&B vocals, blue-collar lyrics, and epic ambitions can be quite effective in the hands of someone as talented as Bruce Springsteen or Joe Grushecky, but no one in Hootie & the Blowfish brings those assets to the table. After three popular indie releases, the quartet has released its first major-label album, Cracked Rear View, which not only sounds about 15 years out of date but also comes up short in the verbal and melodic hook department.

Cracked Rear View was produced in L.A. by Don Gehman, who provides the same studio luster he brought to blue-collar-rock projects by John Mellencamp and Bruce Hornsby. The Hooties tackle similar themes--racism, small-town life, elusive lovers, death in the family--but do so with an overbearing earnestness unrelieved by wit or fresh insight. The music, too, clumsily attempts profundity by adding anthemic guitar chords, deliberate rhythms, and wailing vocals to quite uninteresting melodies. Darius Rucker owns a strong, warm baritone voice, but he tends to overwork every note and overstate every emotion. "Hold My Hand," recycled from an earlier album, has become a rock-radio hit, even though it epitomizes the band's melodramatic tendencies. --Geoffrey Himes

You may not like these guys, and you may think that because they're not on M-TV all the time that they fell off the face of the planet, but here's the facts. Over 22 million albums sold, not bad considering that these are 4 guys writing songs that THEY enjoy playing, not what the TREND is. If you just can't seem to like there music, at least respect the fact that they are simply doing what they love to do--Play Rock & Roll music. If you've have never been to a live Hootie show, you just havn't lived it up. They are with out a doubt the greatest band both LIVE and on ALBUM!

Hootie and the Blowfish are truly one of a kind. They have the ability to knock my senses backwards and I can honestly say that no other band has ever held my interest like Hootie. I will always be a huge fan of their music and CRV will just get better everytime I listen to it. It is an amazing mix of emotional songs that I can relate to in everyway. Just listen to "not even the trees" and tell me that you don't want to press repeat over and over!!! Buy this if you don't own it and listen to it several times a day!!!
