Amazon.com
Their first full studio album without guitarist Duane, 1973's Brothers and Sisters doesn't match what came before it but would probably be considered a masterpiece if it came from most other bands. The Allman(s) move away from their rougher blues rock toward a groovier Southern rock, a shift that reflects the increased influence of Dickey Betts and new pianist Chuck Leavell. Betts contributes chestnuts such as "Ramblin' Man," "Southbound," and the classic instrumental "Jessica," plus the acoustic finale "Pony Boy," which showcases his work on Dobro. Gregg's impact is not nearly what it once was, although his "Come and Go Blues" and "Jelly Jelly" hit the mark. Original bassist Berry Oakley passed away during these sessions and is heard on just two cuts. --Marc Greilsamer

3 out of 5 stars Shoot The Piano Player !.......2007-06-07

This album isn't bad but it's a far cry from the Allman's first four albums . You can see them going from a hard core blues band to somewhat of a pop band . Ramblin' Man (featuring Les Dudek on lead guitar) and Jessica (featuring Dudek on acoustic guitar )being two prime examples . There is some good stuff on here though . Betts does a killer lead on Southbound .Wasted Words is good and so is Come And Go Blues . Jelly Jelly is a great blues song . Its actually a cover of an old Lowell Fulson song , same exact lyrics and melody but the song is credited to Gregg Allman ( no big deal ) . The problem with this album is , they replaced Duane with Chuck Leavell . Where you once had gritty raw guitar solos , you now have a very melodic piano in it's place . Leavell's great , but it really altered the bands sound and instead of being one musics great blues bands it made the Allmans synonymous with " southern rock " , a title more befitting The Marshall Tucker or Charlie Daniels Band .

5 out of 5 stars Dicky Betts Comes To The Forfront.......2007-01-25

The first album with no material from Duane, Dickey Betts plays it solo for the majority of this album on guitar. The band also brings in Chuck Level on keyboards to help fill in the gaps. To me this has always sounded like a bit of a transitional album with Dickey Betts seeming to take more of a lead role in the band and Greg Allman more in the background from a songwriting perspective. This is somewhat due to the success of one of the Allman's biggest singles, on this album "Ramblin Man" which is still a classic rock staple today. Betts began leading the band down a more country blues style which starts to show up on this album. Overall I find this one to be a step down from their previous efforts. This album produced more radio staples including "Wasted Words", "Southbound" and the 7 plus minute instrumental opus "Jessica". The Allman Brothers are one of the few bands that I can think of that have had a 7 minute long instrumental track actually make it into top 40 radio. Chuck Level stands out on piano on a "Jessica" and "Jelly Jelly", and for the most part the band is in fine form, but this one just does not strike me as being quite as good as their previous efforts.

5 out of 5 stars Yep!.......2007-01-02

Brothers and Sisters is one of the all-time best records!

I've been a fan since the beginning so I know my ABB. The previous reviews seem to be about the album's content which I won't dispute except to add that brother Richard Betts was an integral part of the band and can't be separated from their legacy. He influenced a generation of guitar players and has contributed some of the most amazing guitar solos in recording history. I just want to be clear that while some may have felt he stood somewhat in the shadow of brother Duane, I believe he certainly stands on his own as a great musician, singer and songwriter responsible for many of the Allman Brothers Band's best tunes and most memorable guitar lines.

What I mainly want to comment on here is the Remastered version of Brothers and Sisters. I was sorely disappointed in the sound quality as compared to the record album. Unfortunately, they "cleaned it up" to the detriment of the music. Here are the specific problems I spotted. The worst offense is the amount of emphasis inflicted on the vocals: it makes brother Gregg's vocal too bright and clean sounding (when he had probably just smoked an entire pack of cigs prior to cutting each track to get some more gravel in his voice as Cat Stevens used to do), and the same vocal-tinkering makes Dickey sound like a 12 year old boy, unlike the LP which is an accurate recording of how their voices sounded.

The other problems I have with this Remaster is the snare drum and cymbals are also sonically enhanced to the point of causing ear fatigue ... it stresses me out, man! The LP was mellower AND you could hear the tambourine. Also I miss the beautiful rumble of Chuck Leavell's honkytonk piano ... now all sparkly clean (and sounding more like a toy) on this Remaster. Finally, some of the rhythm guitars on this CD Remaster sound a bit Disco for my taste (with that bright top end): the LP guitars were perfect, however. Shocking difference.

Apparently Johnny Sandlin is a darn good record producer and I think he should have been consulted for this Remaster! It reminds me of the poor remastering job done on another great, early '70s album, Relayer, by YES. Like Brothers and Sisters, they turned an album I was used to listening to from the '70s into a '90s-sounding album. Why? You could hear everything fine the way it was ... unless your ears don't work anymore. These great albums are from their time and they should be celebrated as such. This particular era was the best for music in my opinion, it had a particular sound, and there is no disgrace in that whatsoever. Mastering engineers need to learn about preserving "the vibe" of an album instead of always trying to "correct" things that don't need correcting! "Flat" sound always gives the proper balance, unless the whole point of the reissue is to put a different spin on the music. Then it should be marketed as such. Maybe the ABB can revisit this mastering process for the digital 24-bit release and create an Ultimate Version before the master tapes completely lose their dynamics. Please consider restoring the album's vibe, guys. It deserves as much.

But for the surface noise, I'm happy with the LP version, though I may still have to track down a pre-Remastered edition of this great album for archival. The casual or new listener may not mind the sonic "enhancements" offered in the Remastered version, especially if it is bound for a sound-crusher like an iPod, but those who are already familiar with this album might be a bit surprised with the new take on things. I would like to dedicate this review to brother Berry Oakley ... it's wonderful to hear him one last time.

4 out of 5 stars A good recovery from tragedy.......2006-06-29

Okay, I'll be fair to the Brothers and won't complain about the lack of Duane (seeing that he died) since, with or without him, they're one of my five favorite bands. My complaint about a few of these songs is the lack of Gregg as a dominant songwriting presence. Betts writes or cowrite four of these seven songs. That's not always bad - the record's two big hits (Ramblin' Man and the obligatory instrumental epic Jessica) are both catchy, breezy, guitar-dominated fun. And Dickey's a good guitarist. Just not an outstanding songwriter, as proved by his remaining two songs. Now, I like Southbound - catchy, piano-driven blues - but it's more an excuse to jam than a song. And Dickey's solo feature at the end (Pony Boy) is a big disaster. The guy's voice is flatter than steamrollered paper.
Gregg's songs are a ton more consistent. The atypically political Wasted Words (which could be anti-Watergate, or just a laundry list of grievences against hypocrites in general) is a cool barroom boogie sort of like Ain't Wastin' Time No More. Come and Go Blues is the album's most underrated song by far. I love the blues, and this is a big dollop of it - really, the only pure blues song on this album. Jelly Jelly is just an average sex song, it would've been better without the tinny organ, but not as bad as Pony Boy.
Another element of this album I don't get is Chuck Leavel. I mean, I like the guy's work with the Rolling Stones (though he's no Nicky Hopkins or anything), but the group already had a beyond capable keyboard player in Gregg (who played piano in addition to organ, though he's better known for the latter). Two is just overkill.
Berry Oakley died during these sessions (in a bike accident! Close to where Duane died!), and he was replaced by Lamar Williams. Berry was a good bassist, it must be said. Lamar sounds a lot like Berry. RIP Berry! And Duane!

4 out of 5 stars The Last Great Allman Brothers Album.......2006-03-13

1973's BROTHERS AND SISTERS was the first full-length studio album from the Allman Brothers Band in nearly three years, during which time the band had lost both guitarist Duane Allman and bassist Berry Oakley, who were replaced as it were by pianist Chuck Leavell and Lamar Williams. Surviving Duane's death had been nothing short of miraculous; surviving Berry's, without a major shift in the group's sound and sensibilities, proved impossible.
For this reason, as well as the remaining bandmembers' ongoing slide into the personal and chemical excesses which have always made the big time what it is, BROTHERS AND SISTERS presents a largely revamped ABB, with songwriting replacing jamming as the chief priority and a crisper, more commercial attitude than that of any previous Allmans release coloring the results. Guitarist Dickey Betts, having already proven himself capable of singlehandedly tackling the string-strangling front line he'd once so famously shared with Duane, here also takes the lion's share of composing credits; it is clearly his vision which predominates on this, the ABB's last genuinely great LP.
The first two tracks on BROTHERS AND SISTERS were the last to feature Berry Oakley, and the tragedy of his sudden exit is underscored by the fact that one of them, Dickey's country-rock anthem "Ramblin' Man," would become the band's only major hit single. It's a phenomenal piece of work, to be sure, with stinging guitar work from Dickey and guest strummer Les Dudek and a made-for-radio chorus which suggests that the Brothers could still go anywhere and do anything if it involved making music. Gregg Allman's opener, "Wasted Words," is a bit too similar in both title and mood to EAT A PEACH's "Ain't Wastin' Time No More," but that hardly makes it bad.
As for the post-Berry cuts, Gregg scores winners with both the soulful, lovesick "Come and Go Blues" and the updated Ray Charlesish "Jelly Jelly," while Dickey contributes "Southbound" - a tune so much in Gregg's vein that he gives Gregg the vocal - and a bright instrumental ("Jessica") which, inevitably, would be greatly expanded upon in concert over the years. "Pony Boy," the closer, a down-home acoustic number on which Gregg doesn't even play, is one of the album's strongest numbers, mixing clever and humorous lyrics with a flawless instrumental track which must have left listeners at the time wondering whether the next release from this group would be credited to the Allman/Betts Band.
It wasn't, of course, though perhaps it should have been. In any case, more than three decades later BROTHERS AND SISTERS stands as the right bookend on the ABB's top shelf of recordings, posthumous live releases by the original sextet excepted of course. A fully worthy addition to the catalogue, nevertheless; Duane and Berry would have been proud.

Brothers & Sisters is a great look into early Coldplay. "Easy to Please" is such a mellow, haunting song with a breezy background noise. "Only Superstition" is an energetic track about the struggle to overcome needless fears. And the title track exudes perfectly that classic Coldplay anguish/yearning motif.

That the trio recorded this stunning, spiritual-minded collaboration in the town of Unity, Maine, is one of life's fortuitous coincidences. Although their voices are dissimilar, Maria Muldaur, Eric Bibb, and Rory Block share roots in folk, gospel, and blues. Brought together, along with a three-piece backing band, in a barn-turned-recording-studio by producer Randy Labbe, the trio cooks up a feisty musical feast that sounds so comfortable and joyous, it seems they were lost soulmates finally joined in song. Bibb's smooth Keb' Mo'-style vocals join Muldaur's huskier, sassy approach and Block's deep blues on a combination of originals and covers that showcase each artist's strengths, both solo and in tandem with the others. From contemporary classics such as Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody" and Bill Withers's sublime "Lean on Me" to a languid version of Jimmy Reed's "Little Rain" and a swampy, roof-raising "My Sisters and Brothers," this upbeat album never gets predictable, preachy, or clichéd. --Hal Horowitz

Just where the (? <&%!) did this jewel come from? Oh yeah, Unity, Maine. Hey, I'll chip in money for a return visit.

Basically found this doing a picture seach on Ms. Muldaur, bought it on account of her and her incredible collaborative work. I had no idea what to expect other than quality and pretty good roots to the blues. I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED.

Even if you're a casual fan of any one of these three artists you need to get this (you need to get it anyway, face it now) because everyone wins on this recording - they all shine, support and compliment each other in amazing ways. The real winners are those of us who just program 'repeat' before we hit play.

These are not people who phone in their tracks and leave it it up to a programmer to mix them and clean 'em up. These are MUSICIANS who value their craft, love to play, love to play WELL with OTHERS and soar places that probably surprise even themselves.

We're the winners, be a winner -- get it -- small price for sheer bliss.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Collaboration Makes a Great Album!!!.......2005-05-15

I was drawn to this album due to my admiration of Maria Muldaur and her vocals on this album are truly superb. It is not pop nor blues. This is a folk album if it must be categorized and the songs are fantastic. There is true life and spirit in every track. It is invigorating and I found myself drawn into listen to each and ever song and once the album was over, I wanted more. I admire Maria for taking part with Eric Bibb and Rory Block. As one other reviewer suggested, they should go back to that barn in Unity, Maine and do another album. Unity is the message of this album. It is uplifting but not "preachy". The songs such as "Lean On Me", "Bessie's Advice", have soul and a message of brotherhood. I love this album and when it is over, it is easy to hit "Replay". I cannot recommend this great album which deserves five stars if not more, highly enough. It is so fine!

5 out of 5 stars Fervor, Wit and Great Blues Singing.......2004-04-02

Some might say that Maria Muldaur, Rory Block and Eric Bibb are as unalike as they are alike. But it's their "unalikeness" wrapped into their likeness that makes this recording something special. This album plays like a joint effort of three old friends having a jam session of sorts. Its totally relaxed, yet full of fervor, wit, and definitive blues/gospel singing. Some of the standouts are Block's version of Bill Wither's "Lean On Me" with great harmony from Muldaur, Bibb's take on Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody" and Muldaur's "Bessie's Advice" (cowritten with Bibb). That's just the icing. There's plenty more including two of Block's standards "Rolling Log" and "Maggie Campbell" where one gets to hear her wonderful guitar playing which sounds as fresh as ever. Bibb's languid, bluesy take on "Little Rain" is right on the money! Things close with Muldaur performing one of her old chestnuts, "My Brothers and Sisters". At the end when she cries out "Hallelujah..Thank Ya!..Thank Ya!" one knows that they've just experienced three great talents doing what they were born to do! If you're a fan of music at its most basic and stirring, this recording is a must! NOTE: Amazon has the son listings in the wrong order.

P.S. Please make another trip to Unity and do it again!!

Not your usual Canadian fare. Tremendous vocals, interesting rhythms, music that just sounds good, even when diverse and discordant. You'll find you've heard some of the songs on the radio.

5 out of 5 stars Why Can't We Get Music Like This in The States?.......2002-07-15

Wow - this record rocks! I haven't heard music this fresh and funky for a looooong time! Big Sugar is almost an anachronism by today's standards....loud (I have first-hand info they're known as the loudest band in Canada), fuzzy, guitar-driven tunes, played with a reverb-soaked, bluesy feel, bottom-heavy bass, tight drumming, but still arranged & played with lots of "space", and soulful, well-crafted songs, too...it's a total trip back to the early 70's..ya gotta love it! Guitarist Gordie Johnson kinda reminds me of a later-day Mick Ronson with a healthy shot of Stevie Ray soul....if you dig rock & roll served up just right, tune into this band...and if you live in the USA, scratch your head and wonder why our FM radio isn't all over these guys. To be played at maximun volume!

5 out of 5 stars Big Sugar = Big Time Underrated.......2002-03-29

Because Gordie Johnson is a world class guitarist and producer and they have a bunch (not all) of sweet songs.

All Music Guide says:

"Brothers and Sisters, Are You Ready? is loaded with a batch of dependable high-octane rock crunchers (particularly album opener "Red Rover," lead single "Nicotina," and "All Hell for a Basement"

As a Canadian I've heard of Big Sugar since they are popular here but have never bought an album. I noticed their musicianship before but after hearing "Red Rover" and especially "All Hell for a Basement" I realised that their good stuff can easily rival the best stuff on American/European radio today.

As a student of music I must recommend this album if only for the production value, "All Hell for a Basement," and Gordie Johnson's vocals and guitar.

"So Not Over" is pretty cool too (notice the background vocals in the hook. And if you're a singer, this guy's phrasing (vocal and guitar) is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Custer LaRue is my all-time favorite.......2001-08-30

As I have said before (and will no doubt say again), one cannot go wrong in purchasing an album on the Dorian label. This disc is further justification for me calling them my favorite record label. Brian Levine and all the folks at Dorian deserve a big thanks from every true lover of music.

In spite of what I said about Claire Gignac in my review of "Les Chants d'Eros," Custer LaRue is still my favorite female singer. "Amazing Grace" makes my admiration for her even greater than it was before. She is truly great here.

The songs themselves are wonderful material. A few of them are still common repertoire in some church settings. Most of the songs have become obscure over the years--only finding resurrection in LaRue's performance.

My favorite songs here are "Wondrous Love," "Hold On," and the title track. It is a sign of a great album that is so hard to choose a favorite on "Amazing Grace."

I love the early instruments used in this recording. It puts a new interpretive spin on the songs. The Baltimore Consort are a dazzling collection of artists who are each outstanding players in their own right--the real miracle is how they play so seamlessly together. I look forward to more music from this great ensemble.

In the meantime, I give "Amazing Grace" a full-fledged recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome voice.......2001-08-18

Custer Larue has a wonderfully light, pure soprano that is well augmented by the various early instruments of the Baltimore Consort, and her unaccompanied rendition of "Amazing Grace" gives me goosebumps! The selections are not "preachy" religion and therefore very listenable. LaRue reminds me of the early Joan Baez; no, she is even better. Heard a selection from this recording on NPR, bought the CD and now want to own everything she ever recorded! A very special, talented group of musicians and Custer LaRue's voice is unforgettable.

5 out of 5 stars Custer LaRue as classical folk musician.......2001-06-10

This album reminds me of Maddy Prior's album of West Gallery music; it does not remind me of the various current releases of early American religious music by choral groups. This is an album that will appeal to folk musicians with a love of the ballad. It also appeals to those interested in lute, bandora, stings etc.; their accompaniment to LaRue's voice is absolutely inspired.

Contents as it is not currently in the listing: Frozen Heart; Wondrous Love; Come Brothers and Sisters; Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal; Death, 'tis a Melancholy Day; Female Convict; Down in the Garden; Hark, My Soul; The Little Family; Wedlock; Old-Fashioned Bible; Cross of Christ; Heavenly Coronation; Hold On; Good Old Way; Come Friends and Relations; Poor Wayfaring Stanger; Amazing Grace.

Especially interesting are the pieces that moved into the Black Gospel repetoire e.g. Hold On and Good Old Way. An absolutely lovely cd with no missteps.

5 out of 5 stars Every last note..........2006-06-14

A super budget 5 CD collection of all of Grainger's Piano music.
    Every last note!
The shipping alone would be $17.00+ for the 5 individual Cds.
Englishman Martin Jones plays these as if he wrote them. He is thoroughly inside this music.
I think his best work to date.
He is joined on CD #5 by Richard Mcmahon and Phillip Martin. Where they rollick in various combos and trios on 1, 2 and 3 pianos. This is exhilerating. Especially on an truly uplifting version of Green Bushes.
The entire set is strongly idiomatic and given a clear, crisp, warm and spacious recording. FIRST CLASS sound.
There are too many highlights to single out, but the In A Nutshell Suite and Green Bushes are especially GOOD!
There is not a bad note or "vibe" on any of these CDs.
Highly recommended for Granger fans and fans of English Piano Music.

4 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Jam Band! Dickie's Coming Out Party!.......2006-10-26

Few bands could have gone through the challenges this band has and still come out swinging (Def Leppard is one that comes to mind). It makes one wonder just how much better they could have been had both Duane Allman and Berry Oakley made it to middle age instead of dying so tragically so early on and in such similar circumstances too.

Still, Dickey Betts pulls off the guitar parts very admirably by himself and composed both the strong tracks from this album, the great "Ramblin' Man" (probably the best pentatonic scale guitar solo ever)and "Jessica" the latter named after his daughter. For those of you who have played in bands and jammed a lot, you'll know what I mean about this being a great jam band as they were capable of tracks that ran into 20 mins to even 30 minutes on "Mountain Jam" from their "Eat a Peach" album just before this. However, just jamming and letting each member of the band play his stuff (a lot like old time jazz musicians do) is what this band is good at and it shows in tracks like "Southbound" and "Pony Boy".

This album is a pretty good one and overall the sound quality is very good considering the copy I have is not the remastered one.

A very good example of the post-Duane version of the band. If you consider that Duane Allman together with Eric Clapton were probably the greatest blues guitarists of their time when Duane died (just hear their work together on Derek and the Dominoes' "Layla")the loss is truly great and one cannot but wonder at what might have been.

Alas, we'll never know but get this and "Eat a Peach" if you want to get the best of the Allman Brothers' work. If you are a guitarist and want to learn what great blues and slide work sounds like, get these two as well as the "Live at Fillmore East" albums as essential listening material.
