Q Magazine - 4 out of 5 stars
"...Original and gladdening music..." Included in Q Magazine's "The 50 Best Albums of 2002."

Product Description
What's a budding musical genius to do in the pent-up lull between albums? Mercury Prize-winning singer-songwriter Badly Drawn Boy (nee Damon Gough), in his spare time between heralded debut THE HOUR OF BEWILDERBEEST, and a follow-up to be released later in 2002, approached the filmmakers adapting Nick Hornby's acclaimed novel ABOUT A BOY about the soundtrack for the film starring Hugh Grant. There's no question to the logic of the combination as Gough's sublimely literate, disaffected yet still charmingly breezy pop music fits the story of life's apparent losers at two stages of life, one an apathetic womanizer approaching his 40s, the other a bullied misfit boy passing into his teens, between whom an unlikely friendship ensues. A folky singer/songwriter scoring songs to help set the tone of a movie about unlikely friendship could stir up memories of Cat Stevens's unreleased soundtrack for "Harold & Maude," a fair enough assessment. In a similar fashion (but in its own way), Badly Drawn Boy's take on ABOUT A BOY weaves a mournful, yet upbeat tapestry drawing from its source material while managing to enrich the story itself. There are even some pop megahit hooks such as in the rolling "Silent Sigh" and in the head-bobbing, ostensible theme song "Something To Talk About."

Although it's based on the 1967 movie of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite"). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of "Gimme Gimme" (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with "They Don't Know." Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Musical, But Product Quality - Eh.......2007-07-15

I absolutely love the musical so I'm thrilled with the cd.

My problem was not with the quality of the cd, but with the plastic case. The cd cases always come cracked. Although it doesn't affect the quality of the cd itself, it's rather disheartening that Amazon charges customers for its poor shipping.

5 out of 5 stars MODERNIZE your music collection!!!.......2007-07-13

This is an AMAZING musical and great album. It is sure to jazz-up any music collection! BUY THIS ALBUM NOW!

5 out of 5 stars A must to add to your collection.......2007-05-18

I was very fortunate enough to see this on Broadway. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen! The music has just enough jazz and contemporary vive that any musical lover would enjoy! It's also got tapping in it! Sutton is simply awesome in this role and all of the cast can really belt out their songs. Harriet Harris is phenominal in her role as Mrs. Meers. I highly recommend this to all broadway lovers! It's one to add to your collection!

5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2006-06-12

The music takes a little bit to grow on you, but boy, does it! It's wonderful, charming, romantic, funny--just like the play itself. I loved almost every song and I was really impressed with "Long As I'm Here With You"-- I thought it was an old song written back in the twenties, because it so sounded like one. The cast is absolutely energetic and endearing, and Sutton Foster just *rocks*. Definitely worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars YOU WILL LOVE IT.......2006-02-17

If you like musicals, you will NOT REGRET purchasing this musical soundtrack. JUST DO IT. It's so great, you will be listening to it forever. I also saw the show at the Kennedy Center in D.C. and it's one of the best I've ever seen. (And I've seen A LOT.)

Have Fun!

5 out of 5 stars The Who Classic Masterpiece AS YOU NEVER HEARD BEFORE.......2007-06-12

The Album is a masterpiece of all time rock n roll, even if this is "the less Who album" of the Who... but nevermind!
The Sound in both Stereo (from the original master tape discovered in the vault of UMG) and 5.1 (mixed by Pete Townshend himself) is great...
As you put the disc in your player you'll hear the great differences from the 1996 reissue even if you have only a "simple" CD player..
If You're a great Who fan and you a have SACD player buy ABSOLUTELY this album and enjoy it 'til the laser of your player won't work anymore...
The second disc is clearly for fans only but the quality of some track even if are demos or outtakes is very very good!!

5 out of 5 stars A Landmark Classic Now Made Even Better........2006-12-26

One of the most important, groundbreaking amd influential albums in the history of rock and roll, The Who's 1969 magnum opus "Tommy", a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid who sure plays a mean pinball, is now better than ever thanks to the brilliance of SACD and DSD remastering techniques.

Every song on the cd sounds like it was recorded just yesterday. It is 100 % crystal clear, perfectly remixed and remastered. It gives you a clearer view of the story as well as a more pleasurable than ever listening experience. Pete Townshend and the people involved in this truly put their hearts into making "Tommy" better than ever.

The bonus disc is also worth it. A lot of awesome raritis. The liner notes are an interesting read, and the album itself is of course a masterpiece nobody should be without.

5 out of 5 stars A Milestone of Early Rock!.......2006-09-29

"Tommy" is beyond question one of the big milestones of early rock. Musically the band were at the peak of their creativity.

All band members were obviously extremely talented musicians and both Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend were/are great singers. Apart from few exceptions like "Cousin Kevin" all songs are outstanding; and it's really great to have the whole story on one CD - compared to the old double vinyl album.

Though the storyline may seem a little weird today ( to me it always did ), there is so much great music on this album.

The second bonus CD gives a very interesting insight in the developement of some of the songs. Though the sound quality is exellent CD 2 will mainly be of interest to hard-core Who fans. None of these alternate versions are better than the ones chosen for the album, though a few come close. The studio version of "Young Man Blues" which did not appear on the original album is a nice addition too!

5 out of 5 stars I Love it !.......2006-09-06

I was so blind-sided by this reissue - really. I have looked at this for a few years now, but I never picked it up. My impression of this was that it had some very good music along with some dated sounding tracks, so it wasn't a high priority. I'd been having very good luck buying hybrid SACD's even though I don't own a SACD player; the CD layers benefit greatly from the DSD mastering, making them stand head and shoulders above the latest PCM remasters (there are a few exceptions), so I decided to take the plunge.

The CD layer is stunning. I must have been sitting there with my mouth open after "Overture" began. I experienced emotion that wasn't there on previous listens to this on CD and vinyl. Yes, some of the tracks still sound dated, but most of this album is very good indeed, and this remaster is so incredible. If you own a great stereo rig, I highly recommend buying this - in fact, even if you don't have a great rig, I recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars The Who's classic rock opera gets a 35th birthday celebration fit for a king!.......2006-08-13

The Who's fourth studio(and fifth overall) album Tommy was released in May of 1969.
The Tommy album by The Who was the make or break for the group because if Tommy had failed, The Who would have probably disbanded due to lack of funds despite their concerts selling out based on Pete Townshend's guitar smashing and Keith Moon's drum kit demolishing at the end of each gig.
Guitarist Pete Townshend, under the gun after I Can See For Miles failed as a single in the UK(although it was their biggest ever hit here in the US) came up with a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid named Tommy whom becomes those aforementioned things after witnessing an event as a child that traumatized him(his father killing his step-father whom he considered his father).
Originally considered to be a single length album, the band felt it didn't make sense so they expanded it into a double album and the result is one of rock's Top 10 greatest double studio albums in history(alongside other classic double albums like the then-already released Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland and The Beatles' White album and would help pave the way for more classics like The Rolling Stones' 1972 masterwork Exile on Main Street, The Who's 1973 release Quadrophenia, Elton John's 1973 classic Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Genesis' 1974 masterwork The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Led Zeppelin's 1975 classic Physical Graffiti, Pink Floyd's 1979 masterpiece The Wall and Bruce Springsteen's 1980 classic The River among many others).
Alot of classics appear on this album like the Overture, the classic Top 20 hit Pinball Wizard, Amazing Journey, the Underture(best instrumental on here which is basically a repeat of the album's other instrumental Sparks), Go to the Mirror, I'm Free, Cousin Kevin(one of bass player John Entwistle's greatest compositions), Fiddle About(about the perverted Uncle Ernie), Tommy's Holiday Camp(another excellent ditty written by drummer Keith Moon whom did an excellent rendition in the film version of Tommy in 1975) and the classic finale We're Not Gonna Take It/See Me Feel Me.
The other tracks on the album It's a Boy, 1921(You Didn't Hear It), Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, The Acid Queen, Do You Think It's Alright, There's a Doctor I've Found, Tommy Can You Hear Me?, Smash the Mirror, Sensation, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson and Welcome are all great pieces as well though tend to be overlooked.
The album made The Who legends for good and peaked at #4 on the Billboard chart and was their first Gold seller(eventually Platinum).
In 1996, the album was re-released as a remastered CD but used different masters for the remixed reissue.
In October of 2003(just in time for Tommy's 35th Anniversary), Geffen Records(formerly known as MCA) re-released the album as a 2-disc Hybrid SACD with the original mix on the CD layer and a killer 5.1 mix on the SACD layer and this version uses the very original tapes that were found in Universal's vault after being said that the original tapes were destroyed by Kit Lambert in a fire. As a result of the discovery of the original tapes, the sound quality is amazing on here.
Disc two has great outtakes and demos like I Was, The Who trying to record Sally Simpson with hilarious results and instrumental versions of Tommy Can You Hear Me and Tommy's Holiday Camp among many other rarities plus a cool booklet with rare photos.
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful autumnal soundtrack.......2006-10-06

Like most of you who are reading this review, this wasn't my first BDB purchase -- that would go to Hour of Bewilderbeast. In fact, this was my 3rd BDB album purchase.

This album is amazing. Just different enough from his non-soundtrack albums to be interesting yet containing all of the things you love about him. On first listen, you may think the musical interludes are filler -- you'd be wrong, though. On subsequent listens, this album reveals itself as the perfect creation it is. I'd liken it to Marvin Gaye's What's Going On in the sense that all the songs have a very similar feel, and musical interludes have some melodies repeated throughout the album.

So buy this, jump in the car on a rainy, autumn day and prepare to be completely astounded by how good these melodies and songs are.

5 out of 5 stars Badly Drawn Boy Makes Magic Again.......2005-12-14

This is the fourth BDB album I've bought and it's simply an amazingly brillant piece of musicianship. I've listened to this album a ridiculous amount of times and I never cease to enjoy every song on here. BDB finds a perfect balance mixing quirky instrumental tracks with an equal number of wonderful vocal pieces, creating an album rarely surpassed by musicians today. With enticing lyrics and catchy tunes, the soundtrack to "About a Boy" will please its buyers and delight any who take a moment to listen to BDB work his magic.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and interesting music.......2005-09-22

A great soundtrack for the "About A Boy" movie. This eclectic, energetic, wistful music conjurs up a range of emotions depicted in the movie. My wife loves the CD too. Very original.

5 out of 5 stars Didn't Know this existed.......2005-06-18

I've been looking for the soundtrack everywhere. It's one of the most original, uplifting, "gladdening" -as the original review copy reads - soundtracks out there. Love it!

THIS MOVIE IS A GREAT INSPIRATION FOR ANYONE TRYING TO TURN THEIR LIFE AROUND.

3 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity....................2007-02-14

The vibe is all but gone from Carl's brilliant debut. The production is off and a lot of the songs are dull.

Top Joints:
My First Love
She Is
Know It's Alright(Malik Yusef's spoken word is not as good as his one on Emotional)
Make It Alright
The Baby Maker (TOp Song)

3 out of 5 stars kind of a disappointment .......2006-04-05

I don't own Carl's debut album, so I really don't know what it was like. After hearing such hits as "Summer Rain", "Emotional" and "Wish I Never Met Her" I expected much more from this album. I have heard Carl Thomas sing live and he can really sing. This CD didn't seem to showcase his vocals well and his voice sounded kind of weak on some songs. After listening through the CD it was only six songs I thought were good:
My First Love - very pretty song
The Baby Maker - very soulful, reminds me of the 70s, CT did a good job singing
Dreamer - this song was off the hook, loved the overall sound to it, very unique
A Promise - this one was nice, it kind of has that gospel feel to it
But Me - I really liked the tempo on this song
Work It Out - now this song I believe was the best, the beat is off the hook
The other songs were either annoying or boring. In the beginning of the CD he has this poetic reading interlude going on. It was not good. Especially when Carl joined in, that is when it got annoying. I couldn't wait for it to be over. The CD really doesn't get any better until the third track. I had to skip over some songs after that to get to some worth listening. Towards the end of the CD it gets very boring. I can tell at least three of the last songs were fillers because of the lack of effort put into them. "All You're Given", "Let Me Know", and "Rebound" sounded so bland and dull. I tried to force myself to listen to them but I just couldn't because they are so boring.

Overall if you're a fan of Carl Thomas I guess it's worth a listen. I really don't recommend that you buy this because it wasn't great. Some of the songs I believe they could have done without. Like "Anything and "Make it Alright", very boring songs. "She Is" featuring LL Cool J has a nice beat but after a while I began to get sick of it. I only play this CD when I want to hear those six songs I like. This CD was a let down and I felt Carl Thomas didn't show or put enough effort into it.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Work, Carl - "let's talk about " this one..........2006-01-16

It's always tough for an artist to follow a high quality, top selling classic release like "Emotional," Carl Thomas's debut album. "Let's Talk About It" does a pretty damn good job of accomplishing such a feat. There are quite a few exceptional tracks on this album, including "My First Love," "Make It Alright" and "Let Me Know" which all demonstrate Carl's ability to add emotion to every song he sings on. "She Is" feat. LL Cool J didn't need to be put on the album or released as a single. The sample on the track has been used so many times by rappers and R&B artists and it was not a unique song. "P. Diddy" and others' production didn't make the album as a whole sound as "old" as Emotional which will draw some of Carl's fans from the first album away. However, there are quite a few tracks that are definately "classic" like "The Baby Maker" and "All You've Given." Carl could have held out more notes and "broke out" more to show his true vocal range on more songs. He did do it on enough songs to make this release "good quality." I am in the middle on the "poetry/rapping" he used on his first album as well as this one. It is probably not needed but it is "artistic." Carl, keep up the good work, just don't let the A&Rs, Producers and Executives around you change your musical direction. Keep recording quality music that can last for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Don't sleep on this one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-10-28

This album dropped in March 2004 and it's still being played in my car. Bad Boy did a terrible job in promoting this album however I recruited 8 of my friends to buy it and they did not care for CT, but they love the cd now. There are 15 strong cuts on this album and it should be in your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Let's Talk About It..........2005-08-31

I know music, been writing music for years now. Music is my life; I also write music professionally.

This CD is just as good or even better than EMOTIONAL. Although Emotional had some seriously GREAT songs, this does too and is very consistant on quality. Good job Carl! Must buy!

JUST BUY THE DAMN CD ITS AWESOME!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Noel Coward in his time.......2007-06-19

This three CD set is a very good buy, if you like Noel Coward. The first two CD's are early recordings, contemporary with the writing and when the young Noel could hit those high notes. Also included is a disc of contemporary recordings by other artists of the time. I admit that the sound is scratchy and muffled. I don't care. It's worth it for the authenticity and sincerity. (Two strange words to use when talking about Coward.) No one was better at creating rhymed wit than N.C. Not even Cole Porter. If you are unfamiliar with Coward's work and want an introduction at little cost, here's your chance.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Price Club.......2005-04-28

"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

5 out of 5 stars A living legend.......2005-03-10

Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "

1 out of 5 stars not your daddy's old timey spiritual.......2004-06-23

Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.

5 out of 5 stars Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31

IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**

4 out of 5 stars Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12

This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Magnificient Talent!!!.......2003-02-01

I am currently listening to this remarkable CD with that blissful madrigal talent passed down to these children.

My cat came and sat next to the speakers, which he has never done before, when the lovely voices sang so eloqenntly
and wonderously high.

I am so thankful this is available through Amazon!!!

Damon Gough, the man behind Badly Drawn Boy, opted to score the film adaptation of Nick Hornby's novel About a Boy instead of recording a regular follow-up to 2000's Hour of Bewilderbeast. Interspersed with short instrumental interludes that serve as lovely miniatures, the songs evoke the book's jaunty mood and (fittingly for something based on a Nick Hornby story) incorporate strands of pop music from the past 40 years with uncommon grace. "Something to Talk About" borrows from Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney yet doesn't feel derivative; "Above You, Below Me" is a charming waltz; the intoxicating "Donna and Blitzen" is pure Phil Spector-does-Christmas. Inspired meetings of this magnitude between film and music are rare enough that this one should be celebrated to the high heavens. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Great album. Unfortuantely it appears to be copy protected and unable to play on computer systems.

    5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2005-02-06

This is one of the best motion picture soundtracks out there right now- right along with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind soundtrack. Badly Drawn Boy has achieved something here, something beautiful and bittersweet. I like what John Brookes wrote. I love "I Love N.Y.E."

    The movie's great too. =)

    4 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2004-06-15

Badly Drawn Boy's gift is that he writes songs that end up stuck in your memory without you even realising it. Six months after listening to this album, I woke up with "River, Sea, Ocean" going round in my head and had to spend two days tracking it down. "Delta (Little Boy Blues)" was used as repeating incidental music on NPR recently and every time I heard it I went "I'm *sure* I know that song", and here it is too. You leave this album singing some songs, you leave it remembering all of them. His unique mixture of shyness and brashness is the perfect match for Hugh Grant and the movie. And he has Andy Rourke from the Smiths in his live band!

    5 out of 5 stars I love NYE.......2004-06-06

This is an outstanding soundtrack, possessing a melancholy beauty that captures the bittersweet flavor of the movie perfectly. In my opinion it's on par with The Graduate's soundtrack - at least, I'd be hard-pushed to think of another comtemporary movie soundtrack that's as heartfelt and moving (although Jon Brion's excellent classical compositions for "Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind..." impress too).

I am surprised however, how people have overloooked the stand-out track on this inspiring soundtrack - I love NYE. I'm just blown away every time I hear this instrumental masterpiece. (I even noticed that the last series of Sex and the City threw it in for poignant effect at one point.)

In About a Boy Nick Hornby and Badly Drawn Boy were just one of those perfect pairings. And subsequently it's is one of my favorite films... something, I hasten to add, I'm slightly embarassed about because it was marketed like most Hollywood garbage (ie cheesy and over-sentimental which it wasn't) and I can't stand Hugh Grant normally, but he was surprisingly great in this.
