Razor-sharp guitars, hip-hop and funk rhythms, and healthy doses of ska and dance-hall reggae make this one of the most surprising albums to come out of the American heartland. But what's most remarkable about 311's breakthrough release is its enlightened attitude: In an otherwise terminally aggro style of music, where everyone strives to be harder than each other, 311 put down deadly weaponry on "Guns (Are for Pussies)." "Hive," meanwhile, disses hard drug use (but they're pro-hemp, of course), and "Misdirected Hostility" encourages, of all things, positivity ("All that angst sh*t is just cheesy"). Vocalist Nick Hexum and rapper Doug "S.A." Martinez trade lines with ease, and the band dexterously shifts gears between heavy tracks like "Down" and "Brodels," the frantic "Jackolantern's Weather," and the laid-back "All Mixed Up" and "Sweet." --Daniel Durchholz

311 Hits Compilation Perfect...Almost..........2007-04-15
First off the pros to this compilation: you have the hits ranging from the aggressive breakthrough single "Down" to the breezy tropical "Amber", one of the most beautiful songs written by 311. In between you have all the heavy rockers ("Creatures", "Flowing", "Transistor", "Homebrew" to name a few) and you have some of the more melodic moments ("All Mixed Up", "First Straw", "Beyond The Gray Sky"). While a lot of good material was included here, there are a few songs I would have included on this compilation that, in my opinion, would have made it better. "Freeze Time" was a huge rocker from Soundsystem that could have been included here; "Purpose" is a little Carribean sounding with a heavy chorus thrown in the mix; "Feels So Good" from music should have had just as much right to be on here as "Do You Right"; "What Was I Thinking" was a minor radio hit (I remember hearing it on WAAF's real rock 20 peaking at no. 17); and lastly, "Applied Science" should have been on here as it's a staple of 311's many concert shows.
So there you have it. While not the most perfect greatest hits package to come around this century, curious people wondering about 311 would do fine to pick up this compilation for a sampler of 311. Those who want more out of this should pick up 311's other albums and make their own compilation (which I did) and rock out. But by no means a failure, this is a good introduction into the world of the Omaha, Nebraska quintet.
Enjoyable, if of course you like 311 like I do!.......2007-03-14
Their music was energetic and often had a party antics type theme to it. From the songs "Down" "All mixed up" "Transistor" and "Love Song", this album is truly a collective song list that features their strongest efforts. I loved the lesser-known music they had over the years that the MTV generation may have missed, but this one is great because you get all the hits and then some. I always liked this band because they were not depressing or hateful in their songs, they made fun music!!
An "unbalanced" compilation.......2007-02-11
Amber is a good slowed-down song to put on this compilation, no doubt about it. It sounds awesome. Amber is on the "From Chaos" album. And so was "Champagne." But Champagne was also an awesome slow song. So I ask, why wasn't Champagne on the Greatest Hits? Why wasn't it a hit at all? Instead we have "I'll Be Here Awhile" and "Wouldn't You Believe"...they aren't bad songs, but they aren't great either. Put it this way, I won't remember 311 for those two songs; when I wanna remember "slow songs on From Chaos", my mind will immediately think of Amber and Champagne. Also, the song "From Chaos" should have been included on here as well. I know it wasn't even a single, but it was still an awesome song, I think...
Another gripe--only one grassroots song? That was their best album...and all the producers could do is put one song on the greatest hits album? What about Lucky, 8:16 A.M., Applied Science, Silver, Lose, Six, or 1,2,3? Aren't they all good songs too? I'm sure at least one of those could have been on this collection...
For the most part, the Blue Album's hits have been covered pretty nicely, my only change would have been to take off Don't Stay Home and replace it with Jackolantern's Weather. That's a great song...But here comes the compilation's biggest flaw: Soundsystem, Transistor, and Evolver. The hits from these albums all sound similar to each other, sometimes I can't even tell the difference without looking at the song name on my iPod. Come Original, Transistor, Beautiful Disaster, Creatures, Beyond the Gray Sky, and Flowing are all decent songs, but I think other songs would have been better in their place.
The song, Do You Right, I think is an awesome song. Nothing else to say about that. Lastly, three other tracks not featured on studio albums have spots in the greatest hits--First Straw, Love Song, and How Do You Feel. How Do You Feel is an awesome track. Love Song is pretty good. First Straw is not so good. I guess it all boils down to opinion.
In conclusion, the album does get boring at times because of similar-sounding songs. It needed more heavy or medium songs in it. In my opinion, a good solution to this problem would have been to make 2 greatest hits albums: one for early 311, and one for later 311. Music, Grassroots, and the Blue Album could all be housed under the first compilation while Soundsystem, Transistor, From Chaos, and Evolver could be on the 2nd one. But that's just me.
Fun, relaxing, smooth, cool...everything you could want out of a 311 album........2007-01-15

Mozart-A prisoner of his own time........2006-09-08
As this cd shows, Mozart's music was sublime. But even he struggled with using this "harmony of the day". If you were to study the catalogues of Mozart's symphonies, sonatas, and chamber music, let's face it; you would hear a lot of turkies before you made it to the peacocks. We would have to wait until Chopin until the harmonies fattened up a little.
Having said that, you have to completely hail Mozart for taking what was available to him in his day and creating some of the most sublime music with it. It would be like for the next ten years all the world had available to eat was peas, and 200 years from now one man became immortal for the many interesting ways he was able to manipulate peas into a meal.
Good music and good value.......2006-08-28
Five and a half hours of joy for not much bucks.......2005-11-11
FINALLY.......2004-08-05
Anyways, Eschenbach plays these with all the virtuosity and feeling they demand. My favorite piano sonata is Mozart's 12th and he plays it flawlessly; the only thing remotely lacking is that he doesn't quite dig in as much as Alicia de la Roccha does when she plays it on the Allegro movement, but he more than makes up for it with his playing on the Adagio movement.
If it's not your cup of tea it might be worthwhile getting the de la Roccha box set, but personally I think the Eschenbach recording is the best out of all of them.

And now for something completely different.......2007-04-11
Being that I'm such a huge metalhead, most people don't expect me to be a 311 fan. I'm sure most of you reading obviously already know this, but 311 is not a metal band. The band's sound is a mixture of reggae, funk, rap, punk, and alternative rock, and to my surprise, it works out pretty well. Seeing the word rap might get you to think that they are the "m-word", but this isn't nu-metal of any sort, more like a harder, funkier Sublime. The band has two vocalists, each with a different style. SA Martinez, who also does the programming, does most of the rapping and does backing vocals. Nick Hexum, who is also the rhythm guitarist, does most of the lead vocals, and they have a reggae vibe, and he even raps a little bit. Overall, I find Nick to be the better vocalist. The lead guitarist plays some cool riffs and makes some nice effects. Nothing technical like i'm used to, but he makes up for that by playing some catchy stuff and letting out some weird reggae licks. The basslines are nice and funky, and the drummer can keep up a steady beat. This album doesn't contain my favorite 311 song (Beautiful Disaster), but I definitely recommend giving this a try. My amazon friends probably won't dig this, but it's something different.
More than a decade later, it still rocks heavy.......2007-03-21
1. Down - 9/10 Really good song with some killer rapping from SA.
2. Random - 8/10 Don't care for this one as much, and seems kind of oddly placed on the album.
3. Jackolantern's Weather - 9.5/10 Stacatto verse riffing with screaming guitars. What's not to like?
4. All Mixed Up - 9.5/10 311's(probably)biggest hit, and for good reason. Trust me on this one.
5. Hive - 10/10 Nick Hexum and SA trading lyrics in a head-banging heavy-hitter.
6. Guns (Are For Pussies) - 8/10 Good lyircs, but not too amazing.
7. Misdirected Hostility - 8.5/10 Talking about how people need to lighten up, and "kick the f***ing heroin!"
8. Purpose - 8.5/10 A very chill track for the most part with good lyrics.
9. Loco - 9/10 A short song talking about taking shrooms.
10. Brodels - 8/10 A slow and heavy song that's sub-par (for 311)
11. Don't Stay Home - 10/10 I love this song. The song's about a guy in prison.
12. Don't Let Me Down - 8.5/10 A fun and short song with a threat at the end "If you hurt him again, I'll f*** you up!"
13. Sweet - 9/10 A reggae-toned song similar to Purpose.
14. T&P Combo - 9.5/10 A perfect closer to the album that ends abruptly.
Overall, a great album you shouldn't miss. Key tracks: Don't Stay Home, All Mixed Up, Jackolantern's Weather, and Hive.
Classic 311.......2007-01-05
Not the Grassroots, but definitely an Evolving piece.......2006-11-03
This is a great, versatile album that contains a little of everything, and a lot of good music. Who cares what you call it: rock, rap, or reggae. The fact is its got different sounding tracks that promote not only a mood but an entire lifestyle in their lyrics and amazing guitar
Thats another thing, you won't find another band that has the guitars this one does. I'd say more about the drums but I have a hard time identifying any drums from any band during a song, I just feel it and flow.

like sparkling mineral water.......2006-12-22
For starters, Mozart achieves his sparest, cleanest, most limpid lines when writing for solo piano. Then comes Daniel Barenboim, whose reading of Mozart is crisply and unemotionally classical. Not for him the drawn-out keyboard soliloquy. On the contrary, Barenboim gives us Mozart, only Mozart, and nothing but Mozart, clean and shimmering as sparkling mineral water.
This is not to say that Barenboim as pianist is unfeeling. On the contrary, the Fantasia in C Minor - to choose just one example with almost random lack of care - is quite moving. But not with a flourish. Rather, with almost sinewy restraint. The presentation represents a fine grasp of the master composer, nurtured with discipline across the length and breadth of the voluminous sonatas.
Indeed, the sheer volume of the Mozart piano sonatas is intimidating. It is astonishing to imagine one man having mastered it as Barenboim has. EMI Classics has done us the favor of collecting these two gentlemen's asynchronic collaboration in one set, affordable at that.
If Mozart is a musician for the ages and Barenboim a performer who left a formidable imprint on the twentieth century, their collaboration as represented in these recordings is a watershed that will need to be referenced by students of classical piano for at least another hundred years, or until people can only remember as far back as the Dixie Chicks.
Buy Barenboim on Mozart before that happens, and so stick your thumb in the dike against the evil day.
Soulless Rendition.......2005-10-16
Lovely.......2005-03-17
"The sonatas of Mozart are unique: too easy for children, too difficult for adults. Children are given Mozart to play because of the quantity of notes; grown ups avoid him because of the quality of notes." - Artur Schnabel
Top notch performances.......2004-06-17
When you are a musician you must avoid in the cliche , and you should feel the music as a whole and the playing must be the consequence of a overlong process that begins in your soul , then your inner mood , your intellect and finally your fingers. I remark the aspect when you are in front of Mozart, Beethoven Wagner, Bruckner, Bach , Schubert and Bartok , because these composers are in a highest level than the others and the music itself is merely a device for expressing deeper issues.
That's why this set is superb. Barenboim plays a Mozart rich in expresiveness , he gives to Mozart presence .
Barenboim plays music as Vegh or Furtwangler did it , always seeking the landscape far beyond the score . That's why they are so original in their performances . The rapture is not a device for exhibite his skills , it''s the final product of a long process.
Acquire this set. It's an unvaluable treasure.
Very good, but a bit misleading?.......2004-05-15
My only complaint with this 8 CD set is that the advertised piano sonatas occupy the first 5 CDs; the last three are piano variations -- interesting, but not of the quality of the sonatas themselves. Surely a less-expensive 5-CD set, providing just the sonatas advertised in the title, would offer better value for money. On the other hand, 5 great CDs for $48 isn't a bad deal.

Starting where Holland's Urban Dance Squad left off--thrash rock coupled with hip-hop beats, rapping, and Jamaican-style toasting--311 found their own voice on 1994's Grassroots. Here they prove to be an estimable groove machine on cuts such as "Applied Science" and "Omaha Stylee," blending turntable moves and ska rhythms like a kinder, gentler Fishbone. Avowed stoners, they dip into noodly Grateful Dead territory on the jammy "Taiyed," touch on Meters-style funk in the sleek "Grassroots," and echo the Bad Brains on the rasta-metal mosh "Salsa." Their dub-rock lexicon is spoken by the likes of Sublime, Limp Bizkit, and Sugar Ray--players in a rock genre of which Grassroots is a modern classic. --James RotondiCustomer Reviews:
311's finest hour........2007-06-15
One of the things about me is that I like the kind of alternative rock where the musicians mix things up a bit and combine genres into one flavorful sound, and these guys, along with Sublime (who also rule) are the stars of that kind of music. Either way, I find this to be 311's best album because it shows the band at their most talented and where everything unique about them comes together at its best. Don't believe me? Read on.
The first track "Homebrew" has a killer guitar riff courtesy of Tim Mahoney, and "Lucky" has a great hook. My favorite song on here is "Nutsymptom" as it's very heavy, and halfway through, P-Nut showcases some mad slap bass skills, and Mahoney takes over with a Santana-like guitar solo. Also, "8:16 AM" is a nice, mellow track, and what you've heard about "Applied Science" is true, Chad Sexton performs a drum solo, and although it isn't very technical, it fits the music perfectly and it's nice to know it's there. "Taiyed", although short, has some nice bass work, and "Grassroots (the title track)" shows perfect synergy of genres. We can't forget the jazzy reggae ballad "Lose", and "1,2,3" is a great way to end the album. I didn't list all of the tracks because I didn't want to spoil everything for you, but what I can tell you is that all of the songs on here are great, so you will not be needing the skip button.
I have been listening to this album a lot lately, and it never gets old or tiresome, and it works great for whatever mood you are in, which adds to its greatness. So all in all, if you want some awesome rock music that blows everything on the radio out of the water, then pick up this album now. Not only is it the best album of 1994, it deserves to be considered one of the top 10 albums of the 1990s. It is that good.
LONG LIVE 311!!!!
____ YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-07
Only on Grassroots, will you hear songs like 8:16 A.M. Omaha Stylee, Lose, and the title track. The whole album is full of guitar riffs that sound more like Zeppelin, and the bass can be heard the whole way, it just sounds like they made sure that every second of the song took thought into it. You'll hear a lot of stuff, some stuff takes a little time to discover because of the bass guitar lines were captivating you, or the lyrics, etc. And they do it will emotion too. Music dosen't get much better than this.
If your idea of music is Limp Bizkit, Grassroots is the opposite. This cd has more in common with Rage Against The Machine that Linkin Park. Grassroots is another classic 311, and arguably their best. The production makes the sound _______ on average speakers of headphones, so listen to this one on a great pair of headphones or speakers.

... (I seriously can't think of a title).......2007-07-08
Every song is awesome, although Hydrophonic seems weaker compared to the others, but seriously, there isn't a single bad song. The songs really cool, and to think that a band made a song like Down and Plain and My Stoney Baby. We are lucky to have the classic 311 albums. The title of the album seems appropriate (yeah, very cliched).
No ___________ poor sound samples on Amazon, iTunes only. But seriously though, the songs you might not get because they give you a ________ part would be the songs Paradise, Visit, My stoney baby, and Fat Chance.
Another thing, if you are interested, Omaha Sessions is for sale on the 311 site for a good price. I reccomend it, because some of their early material is actually pretty ___________ impressive.

The Original.......2007-03-08
From the opening snare drum strokes this album keeps your head nodding and your feet tapping. the lyrics exemplify the strong positive message that 311 pumps through the speakers.
You can hear the hunger in the guitar licks, vocals, and drums! A must buy for the collection of fine 90's band music!
A new musical epoch.......2006-08-12
The lyric,
"Life in pursuit of only money we think it's funny
The only thing that money it could ever bring to me
Would be some gifts for my friends follow me now
Trips for my family."
heard in track 1, Welcome, is one of many examples of the attitude these guys have on life. With the music empowering the lyrics, its not hard to catch on to 311's groove.
Track 1) Welcome
- Notice the title of this song. 311 is inviting you along their musical journey. The intro to this song is the perfect invitation. It starts off with a slow moving Latin American groove then launches off into a slow but heavy rap-essque verse. The vocals on this song are the focal point of the song because they seem to be over powering but also empowering the music that follows. This is my personal favorite on this album.
Track 2) Freak Out
- This song is a particular favorite of listeners and a favorite and famous 311 opener during shows. The song starts off with an upbeat single fret guitar riff then the drums and bass come in to create the perfect mixture of 311's version of hard rock. The point of this song is basically stating that their band is the toughest and that they'll stick together through it all. The lyrics can also be established personally.
Track 3) Visit
- The wisdom of this song is hard to decipher, but the literal meaning is easy to depict. The chorus says, "I wanna visit the world, so now I visit the world, with my time on this world", is basically stating that 311 is going to tour around the world. But its obvious that there is more than one meaning because not every verse in the song talks about seeing the world. What I percieve of this song is basically, dont live life in the fast lane. The guitar line in the song reminds me of a classic rock melody with a 90's guitar effect. The outro included during the song makes for a COMPLETE transition from song style. It goes from heavy and attacking, to a calm and absorbing Latin guitar work.
Track 4) Visit
- The objective given during this song and majorly lyrical. The first sentence makes this known. "Everything you do, it comes back to you, whatever it may be." The proceeding words go on to explain not to fear personal change and take events as they lay out to be. This is yet another slow, yet mildly heavy rap groove. The chorus includes a graceful melody that could make one feel as though they're floating in the clouds.
Track 5) Unity
- The word Unity has a lot of pertinancy in the history of 311. Not to mention it was the name of their latest tour. This is another powerful lyrical song explaining that 311 and their fans are going to make it through it all because they have the power of the Unity. This song is a nonstop barrage of assaulting musical power. Never once slowing down for a minute, but everchanging, it will always be having your head bob. The following are a few excerpts of the song that express the truth of 311's belief's.
-"My bro's are down for the Unity, 311 is down for the Unity, Unanimity of the Unity THATS RIGHT"!
-"Oh G-d I can't believe it but when this era's through I'll say that's it. Edification will take place. Pull up the reigns. And get out of the race."
-"Even if I cared to try I couldn't please them.
Their petty complaints, stupid restraints ain't gonna work."
Track 6) Hydroponic
- 311 emerged during the 90's and that means a large population of the youth were resorting to drugs, particularly marijuana, for outside inspiration. With respect to Nick and SA's habit, 311 was able to produce a song that would become an anthem to all their fans and a personal bow to the pot smokers of America. The song starts out with a quiet bass line that gets increasingly louder with time. When it reaches its apex, the drums and guitar come crashing in to create there trademark slow metal groove. The song stays slow throughout but the transitions in the song make it one to bob to many times over.
Track 7) My Stoney Baby
- One of the more "chill" songs on the album no doubt. With the funky bass bumps over the ska progessed like strumming thoughout the song, there is no excuse not to chill out to this tune. The lyrics are, with lack of a better word, fun. You'll notice that the verses are diverse and have great transitions. Nick and SA are able to harmonize quite pleasantly throughout a few of the verses. The plot of the song, not the meaning in this one, is easily understood if one listens to the song in its entirity. It's about the good times and good people they have stumbled upon in their busy music careers.
Track 8) Nix Hex
- The intention of Nick Hexum (Lead Vocalist) is without a doubt to create a psychadelic delite and is achieved with the entering guitar riff. Tim's guitar effect he uses in this song reminds me of sound bending. The subtle verses behind the lyrics are an absolute joy to listen to. This song is probably the most authentic rap song on the CD, how it achieves it sounding like Santana is a question only 311 could answer. Creepy voices and sound effects are used skillfully in the background at perfect intervals. At the end of the song, a prize awaits.
Track 9) Plain
- This song is kinda funky with a twist of the rap that 311 is accustomed to. Nick explains in the verses that basically, he says what he feels. "If I had a point, I'd say it plain" prooves the songs meaning right there. The drums in the song kinda sound like martini bar music at first but then rolls out to the upbeat funk that Chad Sexton (Drummer) can produce.
Track 10) Feels So Good
- One of 311's most famous trademark songs. This song is remenisent of Freak Out in terms of never ending speed and vibe. The 1st verse explains a quality that each 5 band members have to beat stay on game with everyone else in the music industry and says BRING IT ON rather loud and truthfully. This song definately includes a funk feel with the heavy stuff your used to. P-Nut (Bass) has been critically acclaimed by this song. Fans go crazy when song is played live. You will see why.
Track 11) Do You Right
- This is one of the rare 311 dedication songs. One can tell by reading the title that this song is directed at someone, and its obviously a girl. This song style is unique and "fun". Continuously upbeat and angelic at times, the vibe totally makes for an authentic song to match the title.
*Hidden Track*
Fat Chance/ F**k the Bulls**t
- Fat Chance is a unique little sang dialogue that Nick and SA speak with rhythm. They are giving props to their producer Eddy Offord, in only way 311 knows best...IN SONG! After that little intricate tid bit everything goes quiet... the listener is convinced the CD is over... but wait... he hears something its the albums closing song getting ready to take place. This song is rough and fast and the lyrics are cleary indicating that 311 is mad. The song addresses a lot of human mistakes that have happened, are happening and will happen in the future. I guess you could classify it as a political song with a lot of embellishments following it. This song is a very popular closer when they play live.
I hope this review has helped. Having been my first review, I know I must have screwed up somewhere but I am an avid listener of the band and these are my enterpretations of the songs and album as a whole and to fill you in on what 311 is about.
Great debut.......2006-02-25
Fav songs: Welcome, Hydroponic, Unity.
311 at their stoniest!.......2005-10-21
"Welcome" sets the mood nicely, but "Freak Out" is where things really get started. "Visit," "Unity," "Plain," and the classic "Feels So Good" are just a few of the songs that showcase the band's trademark genre-blending style. "Hydroponic" is obviously a reference to one of the band's passtimes, and "My Stoney Baby" is a cool funky tune. However the concert favorite and happy slam dance song "Do You Right" points to the future of 311, combining melodic hard rock with a Caribbean-flavored chorus, frenetic rapping and great singing. And of course, "Fat Chance/F*** the Bulls***," a hidden track for some reason, closes out the album with high energy.
For all of its diversity, the album still sounds a little bit too flat, as if every song uses the same key, tempoes and scales, so it gets 4 stars instead of 5. Still, a great, fun, high energy debut, a must buy for every 311 fan.

Weird, weird recording.......2006-03-09
I am still finding it hard to believe this set of recordings passed quality control before being burnt to CD.
Didn't anyone listen to them first?
The recording technique is trully awful and given that this is modern recording, there is no excuse. There are a lot of strange resonances going on at a level which seriously interferes with the actual music. Not only that, arpeggios are like Uzzi submachine guns wherein the sound of the ivories hitting the wooden keyboard base are so much louder than the notes it's like a woodpecker hacking into a redwood while very quietly humming the tune in the background.
In fact this is a great recording of everything except the music.
Weird!
I didn't understand someones comment until I heard Barenboims set of sonatas, but now I do. Uchidas' playing here really is like someone reading it for the first time, no colour, no life. In fact a painting by numbers picture before being coloured in.
Don't get me wrong, I wish I could play half as well as her but if you want to hear the best, this isn't it.
So far the best I've heard is Barenboim but I'll soon investigate Brautigam, Baruda-Skoda and Moravec... great fun but i guess we have to accept a few disappointments like this on our expedition.
1991 Gramophone Award Winner.......2005-02-12
Although more humble as a whole, Mozart's Piano Sonatas still possess a brilliance and that magical "Mozart touch." Take sonatas like K570 which have a surface innocence over a foundation of serious emotional and intellectual depth. Clearly, Mozart had a way of taking a simple, child-like lyrical theme and developing it via sonata form into something effortlessly melodic and classically perfected. All the sonatas are here enjoyable and highly musical in their own right. Additionally, I also think much of this music really fits well into the world of young children: innocent, lyrical, gentle and not too much at once. But, like Artur Schnabel once said, "Mozart's sonatas are easy for children but difficult for adults." While some pieces are seemingly simple and make for wonderful, soothing background music (disc 5), there are plenty of dynamic, vituostic sonatas here - such as the popular K.330-333, the pathos-laden K.310 (a rare minor-key sonata) and especially the two passionate works in C minor (K457 and K475).
The typically warm, sensitive and expressive style of Mitsuko Uchida brings out the best in Mozart's sonatas as she finds just the right "classical-era spirit" in the music. In the lilting allegros and rondos, Uchida recreates that legendary "bouncy" Mozart tempo and youthful enthusiasm, while still finding the occasional pathos when called for in certain moments. The sound of her piano is somewhat reminicent of a Mozart-era fortepiano with its sharp attack and quick decay. In fact, Mozart took such instrument dynamics into consideration in his fast-moving legato writing. For some at first (me included), this kind of sound may seem somewhat "dry" (as another Amazon reviewer notes as well). But perhaps Ms. Uchida is trying to stay closer to the spirit of the music by her choice of instrument, following Mozart's markings (minimal changes in dynamics) and minimizing the power of the modern grand by largely avoiding use of the sustaining pedal (an invention which arrived late in Mozart's time that whose potential fascinated to him). So, I think the sound fits the idiom well ... but I still find the sound quality a bit thin and slightly unfulfilling nevertheless. However, it is certainly not disappointing enough to keep one from acquiring the set and fully enjoying the music. Just imagine Mozart playing his little fortepiano to tickle the fancy of the fickle Viennese aristocrats, and the sound of Uchida's piano and playing fall nicely into place.
This set received two legendary critic awards: a coveted Penquin Guide "Rosette" and the 1991 Gramophone Award as well as a listing as a top "Recommended Recording" - which certainly is fine critical acclaim. Additionally, Gramophone says of this landmark set: "This is unfailing clean, crisp and elegant playing that avoids anything like a romanticised view. Indeed her complete series is a remarkable achievement, comparable with her fine account of the piano concertos ... an unqualified recommendation is in order for what must be one of the most valuable volumes in the Philips's Complete Mozart Edition."
Another complete set that is high on many's list and worth hearing comes is by Eshenbach. His was my second choice. Andras Schiff is also known for a very lyrical and warm-sounding Mozart and his Decca complete cycle is also satisfying (but it lacks some of the magic Uchida brings). A cycle that did not seem to recreate the 18th-century spirit of these sonatas was that of Spaniard Alicia de Larrocha - whose full, grand piano sound and greater embellishments did not seem to fit the genre as well as Uchida's more intimate pianism and sound (to me at least). Russian pianist Mikhail Pletnev brings his characteristic dynamism and dazzling velocity to K.330-332/K.457 in a 2006 DG release (that did not garner great music-industry reviews though). But, it really comes down to what stylistic nuances most captures your interest and emotion, so it is best to pick what you like best and enjoy the music. But it may be hard to top Mitsuko Uchida in Mozart's sonatas. Most major reviews I have read seem to think so too. Compositions - 4 stars; Performance - 5 stars; Sound - 4 stars.

311's place in rock `n' roll history seems secure. Unfortunately, so does its sound. Unlike other funk-inflected acts such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, and even Incubus, 311's never fully expanded on the promise of its initial musical vision. On Don't Tread On Me, the band's eighth studio release, P-Nut and the gang seem intent on mining the same familiar terrain they have since their 1995 self-titled classic. Fans of albums such as 2001's From Chaos and 2003's promising Evolver will likely find Tread familiar and perhaps even comforting, but it's unlikely to invite a new horde of fans as the album often sounds like an imitation of the bands 311 helped inspire in its decade-plus career. There are some nice touches. "Speak Easy," "Waiting" and many of the other tracks evoke images of sandy beaches and warm summer breezes, but none are strong enough to help Don't Tread On Me stands out from the herd. --Jedd BeaudoinCustomer Reviews:

When "Down" shot up the singles charts in 1996, it was the culmination of eight years of hard work for Nebraska-bred, Los Angeles-based 311. Soundsystem ups the ante on the quintet's good-time, never-forced amalgam of hip-hop, rock, funk, and reggae. "Come Original" features Nick Hexum's identifiable talk-singing style, and the tune's lilting dancehall and reggae overtones make it perfect for convertible cruising. From the odd but compelling rhythms in "Freeze Time," to the Santana-influenced stylings and Tim Mahoney's intricate guitar work in "Life's Not a Race," to the almost metallic riffing of "Evolution," 311 have constructed a diverse yet cohesive collection. The band's crisp, edgy sound, well showcased by producer Hugh Padgam (XTC, the Police), is especially winning on the irresistible and rollicking "Mindspin" and the aggro closing cut, "Livin' & Rockin'." It's a good bet that this Soundsystem will find its way onto the sound systems of fans old and new. --Katherine TurmanCustomer Reviews:
The last great 311 cd.......2007-06-26
I can't think of a single stand out track, because the tracks really are very good. SOme of the songs dont' grab me like other 311 songs can, but that's okay. Come Original, Freeze Time, Life's Not A Race (it sounds like Santana a bit with the guitar), and the great cover of Leaving Babylon by The Bad Brains, are some that stand out. I dont' consider Sound System there best, but it's still excellent, and yet another sick album from 311. These guys really are amazing.
Soundsystem to me represented more of the band streching their limits, especially Tim, who dosen't always play guitar solos. THe Santana solos are great. Chad's drumming isn't as good as songs like Applied Science, but it was some of Chad doing some awesome monster drumming. Nick Hexum still on sings, and Martinez can still rap, and when he sings properly, he can _________ sing (on the chorus for Life's Not A Race). 311 aren't just a _________ nu-metal band. Not Rage, their better.
I wouldn't look into their later albums unless you really like them. I say that 311 ain't just another band, so _________ everything I said before. 311 will forgive me because they are just great people, as a person.

GREATEST Albums of the '90s.......2006-09-11
There are 13 songs on Soundsystem, each track has a diverse mix of styles and sounds. I love all the songs except for track 10.
Music is my life and I listen to everything but country. 311 is a band that mixes various musical genres effortlessly. Soundsystem offers a variety of styles including rock, reggae, funk, hip-hop, metal, and world. The songs are so catchy and fun, you will listen to them over and over.
I have been a 311 fan for over 10 years now and if I had to pick a favorite album, it would be this one. I have listened to Soundsystem a ridiculous amount of times and it never grows old.
311 have been going strong for 15 years now. This album came out in 1999, but it sounds as modern and amazing as the best contemporary music. Do not deny your ears and mind any longer, you need Soundsystem in your collection!
I have listened to SOUNDSYSTEM more times than any other album.

An All Time 311 Bestseller!.......2006-01-11
I estimate that the flowing rhythms and intricate musical themes of this CD have resonated through my many systems hundreds of times. Especially if I am going on a road trip or something, this CD plays -- all the way through! You can't stop it. That's how good it flows!
Breakdown:
"Freeze Time"
This track starts it all of in a grungy, hard, nod-your-head-to-this style that cant be beat. You will understand where this CD is going from this track alone.
"Come Original"
311 despizes non-originality. SA takes to the mic to deliver a lyrical reasoning of why you've got to make up your own sound. Hexum trades off nicely, continuing the 311 tradition. This one is not a crowd pleaser in the sense that it was made to rock! But the crowds sure go crazy over it!
"Large in the Margin"
A flowing nuance of sound that takes you into the more "hydroponic sound" 311 loves. Yeah, it's a homegrown sound, but it sure takes to the waves and pleases the ear. Trust me, you won't have to skip this track. (Nor will you want to.)
"Flowing"
Just take off. It doesn't matter where you go, 311 will find you. You won't lose where you are going, in other words. I like the intro to this song especially. It sets an interesting tone to the whole thing.
"Can't Fade Me"
'Nuff said!
"Life's Not a Race"
While other bands of the time were meddling in the wanna-be-punk rock to match the style of the '70s punk genre, 311 was messing around with the more musical, lyrical, psychadelia that made Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd masterworkers of music. The Transistor album of 311 makes that apparent. They bring some more with this album. Nice job 311.
"Strong All Along"
A head bobbin', smooth rockin' tune. Mix a bit of reggae and some "Omaha Stylee" of 311, and you get this track. It is an amazzing thing!
"Sever"
Traditional 311 jam you cant miss out on.
"Eons"
One of my big time favorites. Flowing. Nice guitar riffs, and chilled lyrics put this one in the top of their track listing for me. They could have made this one a single if they'd wanted...or something.
"Evolution"
Get up and jam to this funky riff about the evolution of technology. Isn't it great? 311 wants you to ensure that it continues. They made a breakthrough, whose next...exponentially?
"Leaving Babylon"
Reggae and psycadelia meet! Another of my all time favorites. This shows not only musical talent, but studio talent. These guys know their stuff, and their music history. If heard it live as well, and it rocks there too. This one seals the deal for me. 311 is at the top. This one will change music forever!
"Mindspin"
The title says it all. You want a little '90s punk. Here you go, served up on a silver platter (or is it platinum)?
"Livin & Rockin"
That's what you'll do as you let this CD go for another round. This one finishes it off niceley. But when you're talking about circles, there is no end, and no beginning. So does this track start it, or end it. I can't really say.
This album is one of their all time best. It is a must have for any R&R lover of this or any generation. Don't wait another minute to start yourself off on a whole nother revolution of music!
