Along with Give It Up, Bonnie Raitt's third album, Takin' My Time, stands as her finest work prior to her 1989 critical and commercial watershed, Nick of Time. Featuring an eclectic mix of pop, rock, blues, and soul, the material ranges from Eric Kaz's powerful ballad "Cry Like a Rainstorm" and Jackson Browne's "I Thought I Was a Child" to the snappy acoustic blues of Mississippi Fred McDowell's "Write Me a Few of Your Lines/Kokomo Blues" and the charming calypso "Wah She Go Do." Raitt is backed on the album by members of Little Feat as well as Taj Mahal, legendary New Orleans drummer Earl Palmer, and Rolling Stones sax man Ernie Watts, giving the album a loose, grooving vibe. Her versions of Mose Allison's smoldering "Everybody's Cryin' Mercy" and Randy Newman's sly "Guilty" are real standouts. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars my all-time fav from Bonnie.......2006-12-31

I grew up listening to this classic from Bonnie Raitt. My mom played the album so many times, the words are imbedded in my memory. Now I own the cd and can't thank my mom enough for turning me into a huge Bonnie Raitt fan!
Most of these songs bring me to a deeper, bluesy place. I usually choose to listen to this cd when I need to slow down, get a little perspective, and can enjoy a good glass of wine.

It's a must-have for any blues music lover!

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.......2006-03-07

This album was my first introduction to Bonnie Raitt some 33 years ago and I've never stopped loving it. For some strange reason the second track I Gave My Love A Candle got lodged so deeply in my head, I remember having a vivid dream about it and meeting Raitt, like some special discourse with a kindred soul. A very emotional experience (the dream & album) and though critics have named other albums as her best, this and the overlooked Fundamental remain my biggest faves. Takin My Time has great staying power.

5 out of 5 stars Third album is a classic.......2005-05-09

A decade and a half before Bonnie captured the public imagination with her 1989 album, Nick of time, she was already building a solid reputation with her blend of blues, rock and folk music, of which this album is a fine example although the blues are the dominant influence here. It may not have been what mainstream commercial radio stations were looking for at the time but, like Bonnie's other early albums, continues to sell steadily while many bigger-selling artists of the time are now represented only by greatest hits compilations.

One reason why Bonnie's music stands the test of time so well is her uncanny ability to pick great songs that suited her outstanding, bluesy voice. Bonnie was also able to persuade some of the finest musicians of the day to play on her albums. On this album, the musicians include members of Little Feat (Lowell George among them), Taj Mahal and the brilliant saxophonist, Ernie Watts.

The set opens with You've been in love too long, a cover of a brilliant but relatively unknown Motown song that Barbara Acklin and Martha Reeves recorded. Bonnie doesn't usually cover Motown but her choice here is impeccable. More predictably, Bonnie covers songs written by some of the finest blues and rock songwriters such as Mose Allison (Everybody's crying mercy), Eric Kaz (Cry like a rainstorm), Jackson Browne (I thought I was a child), Fred McDowell (Write me a few of your lines / Kokomo blues) and Randy Newman (Guilty).

Maybe this isn't the place to begin a collection of Bonnie's music but it should be a high priority if you are interested in collecting at least some of her original albums.

5 out of 5 stars One of Bonnie's Best.......2004-04-11

The first Bonnie Raitt album I ever bought, and after over 30 years, still my favorite. It'll bring you to tears, and bring you to your feet. Listen to it and wonder why it took so darn long for Bonnie to become a major star. Music doesn't get much better than this.

5 out of 5 stars THE GREAT EARLY BONNIE RAITT.......2003-07-08

This is the stuff she was playing at Jack's tiny club on Mass. Ave. in Cambridge, MA back around 1970. Care about history--pick this up. This is Bonnie when she was uncertain of her future and had the blues maybe even better than she expressed them.

5 out of 5 stars No sophmore slump for these boys.......2007-01-10

After releasing their slammin debut disc, After 7 appeared with a very worthy follow up disc with Takin' My Time. The disc featured three beautiful slow jams Can He Love You Like This, Takin My Time and their cover of Baby I'm For Real. All in all an excellent vocal trio that combines state-of-the-art, uptempo New Jack Swing tunes with classic romantic ballads.

4 out of 5 stars Anytime After 7pm.......2006-01-11

R&B trio After 7 drops an impressive release Takin' My Time and this is a bottle of wine. Members Melvin, Kevon and Keith have a sexy, mature sound similar to the likes of Babyface (as two of the members are his brothers). "Can He Love U Like This" has the feel of a classic 70's song by the lyrics over a modern slow groove topped off with a kiss. Attempting and accepting the changes for being with one person and it tells the story in the words that anyone attempting could understand on "Truly Something Special". Track 5 consists of two songs that are both remakes "Baby I'm For Real" and "Natural High". The medley of the songs by the group is just as good as the originals. The highlight for this album is found with the title track for the vocals and the range by After 7 with depth and emotions. "G.S.T." is the acronym for good sex tonight and that's all that needs to be said about this one in particular. To compliment the mood, "Love By Day, Love By Night" adds to the dim lights "...so brace yourself baby..." as stated in the song. There are also two interludes taken from the title track to introduce the mood and to close this LP off. As the group's name may insist, Takin' My Time should be played After 7.

5 out of 5 stars There are no Words!!!!.......2005-06-19

I love this album, The best I have heard in a while. Music now days don't have the same feel as this entire album from track one until the end, you just fall in love!!!! A must have for your collection if nothing but for the title track! Taking my Time!

5 out of 5 stars ALL ABOUT LOVE.......2005-05-22

I RECENTLY GOT MY HANDS BACK ON THIS SET,AND I REALIZED JUST HOW MUCH I REALLY MISSED IT.FROM THE JUMP OFF ALL ABOUT LOVE,I KNEW THIS ALBUM WOULD BE TRULY SOMETHING SPECIAL,AND IT WAS(IN MY OPINION)THEIR BEST WORK.THE MOST MEMORABLE SONGS TO ME ARE THE TITLE TRACK WHICH ALONG WITH MY FAVORITE TRULY SOMETHING SPECIAL WERE VERY MUCH SLEPT ON BY THE RADIO,BUT THEY WERE VERY GOOD SONGS.ALSO ALL ABOUT LOVE WHICH WAS LARGELY SLEPT ON.THEIR COVER OF BABY I'M FOR REAL/NATURAL HIGH WAS FLAWLESS,AND CAN HE LOVE YOU LIKE THIS SEEMS TO BE EVERYBODY'S FAVORITE OF THIS SET.KICKIN'IT WAS ALSO A VERY POPULAR CLUB SONG AT THE TIME.I CONSIDER THIS ALBUM ANOTHER ONE OF MY"TIMELESS CLASSICS".

4 out of 5 stars Good Disc.......2000-04-26

After 7 never got the Love they Deserved.Baby I'm for real done Classy with Natural High is a Good Song. The VOcals are Strong as always.this is a Good Mixture Of Up-tempo&Slow-Jams.they are very Underrated&that's a Shame.
