Apparently, Swing When You're Winning was inspired by the praise Robbie Williams received for his contribution to the soundtrack for Bridget Jones's Diary. Recorded with an 18-piece band in Frank Sinatra's old stomping grounds, the Capitol Records Studio in Los Angeles, this collection of finger-snappin', Rat Pack standards and new material features plenty of guest collaborations, such as the much-hyped Nicole Kidman effort on Sinatra's "Something Stupid." The tracks reflect the karaoke sessions of Williams's childhood in Stoke-on-Trent, England, and have been given the full "tribute" treatment, with no funny business going on in the production to take away from their classic appeal. There's never been any doubt that Williams sees himself as an entertainer in the most traditional sense of the word (not to mention as a bit of a swinger), and his old-time-crooner fantasies are certainly given free rein to charm the pants off us all on this classy album. --Ruby Tuesday

A CD that would make the musical greats proud........2007-05-27
The album starts off with the stellar ballad "I Will Talk And Ho llywood Will Listen". The song was made as a comedic satire of the fame and glory associated with Hollywood, but this comedic does not take anything away from the musical brilliance. The band is perfect and Robbie really shows off his chops.
The rest of the album are covers of musical greats such as Bobby Darin ("Mack The Knife", "Beyond The Sea"), Frank Sinatra ("It Was A Very Good Year", "Something Stupid") Nat King Cole ("Straighten Up And Fly Right") and Dean Martin ("Ain't That A Kick In The Head"), just to name a few. The versions of these songs on the CD pay a definate homage to the originals, but Robbie adds a whole lot of `Oomph' with his spectacular voice and the accompaniment of flawless London Session Orchestra.
The artists that Robbie sings his duets with are perfectly chosen for each song, adding just the right amount of playfulness, sex appeal, comedy or raw talent where it is needed. His solo tracks are simply irresistible. His version of "One For My Baby" is perfection and "Have You Met Miss Jones?" will knock your socks off.
Robbie Williams truly is a musical chameleon, transforming from a promiscuous rocker to a deep, sensitive character to a sophisticated oldies crooner and back again.
This CD truly is a treat to listen to.
The Ghost of Sammy Prefers Robbie Over Frank! .......2007-02-24
Sammy Cahn raved about Williams' young career. Then he told us to tell Robbie to quit smoking, or he'd be dead before 60 like Sammy Davis. But Davis countered, "Lay off, man -- 50 Robbie years are like 300 regular person years. He's got the platinum pipes and the golden chops -- no amount of smoke gonna tarnish that."
Cahn agreed, "A 14 carat manic-depressive with deep, multi-faceted phrasing. Plus the lightning eyes and magnetism."
Davis added, "Swing When Your Winning is all Ava Gardner ever plays, over on Cloud 9."
We kept trying to contact Frank, to give him a say, but he wouldn't show. Maybe he's too embarrassed to face the music!
(Some may disagree with the ghosts' opinions. It is *really* true, though, that Cahn's wife sent Robbie a letter. The letter said that Cahn's wife heard the album, then invited Dean Martin's wife over to listen to it together. They cried and hugged and smiled. Robbie has framed the letter.
From my objective viewpoint, Robbie Williams is at least the world's best showman among the living. At least! BTW - The Albert Hall dvd has great extras including the video and "the making of" featurette for the "Something Stupid" duet with Nicole Kidman. Very snazzy!)
