Despite the advent of the '00s, thoroughly blunted longhairs wearing three-quarter-length T-shirts still boot around the suburbs in painted vans listening to roaring metal. Fittingly, a whole new crop of post-Dazed and Confused-era stoner rockers--Fu Manchu, Monster Magnet, and arguably the kings of them all, Queens of the Stone Age--provide a shredding contemporary score for righteous three-finger devil salutes. On Songs for the Deaf, core members bassist Nick Oliveri and singer-guitarist Josh Homme (also see Kyuss) balance pure guitar-induced carnage with more complex, though no less aggressive, speed rock that whips by so fast it creates its own breeze. Opening with the 90-second "The Real Song for the Deaf"--a cheeky and amorphous bit of bloopy electronica quite possibly recorded at the bottom of a swimming pool--the disc explodes with track two, a toxic squall of power chords and now-classic Olivera death howls. It's here the album's recurring concept/conceit is introduced as a generic-sounding announcer from L.A.'s "Clone" radio spits out some psychobabble reinforcing the tired if true cliché that commercial radio stinks. Similar mock broadcasts surface elsewhere, but they're easily forgivable, given the bounty on offer. Homme-powered tracks dominate--the lurching, weirdly springy "No One Knows" is a kind of "Monster Mash" for grownups; the vocal harmony-driven "The Sky Is Falling" is almost dreamy until a small army of guitars surges to the front lines to begin firing. And a lyrically winking hidden track, "Mosquito Song," is either an in-joke of ridiculous proportions or a declarative statement about the level of musicianship lurking just beneath the quaking veneer of the Queens' sound. Either way, genuine excitement comes early and often on Songs for the Deaf. It's a remarkable achievement--a hard rock record so good that it immediately evokes a conspiratorial fervor that makes you want to tell everyone you can about it. Er, job done. --Kim Hughes

Give me Torro...Give me some more..........2005-10-15
I was fortunate to catch Queens on tour in Denver just after this was released...man, they delivered the goods...totally blew me away..it was the most righteous musical experience EVER (see 'em at a small venue so the sonic ferocity permiates your very soul)..they played nerely every song on this album plus some of their older stuff...
The opener MILLIONAIRE shreds right out of the gate (There's a slower version of this song on Desert Session Vol 4/5 where the lyrics are easier to understand...it's good too but this one is the best...this song is also on the XXX soundtrack)
NO ONE KNOWS really showcases the talents of Homme as a song writer and guitarist...the quirky riff in an odd time proves there are none like the Queens out there.
SONG FOR THE DEAD...one of the best songs on the album (and in the rock universe)...here everyone really showcases their talents..it starts with Homme's wicked riffage (and tone), then becomes punctuated with Grohls brutal drum attacks...the whole band kicks in..pause...guitars trade licks..and then they take off again...this a titan among rock songs...
THE SKY IS FALLING...is a marvel of textured and layered guitars... on top of it all is Homme's and Lanagan's sweet inteplay of vocals.
GO WITH THE FLOW...is a fun and really accesible song on the album...the lead guitar is really smooth and seductive (the video is really cool too)
DO IT AGAIN...this song is really in the Queens mold of older albums...it's a song about sex..in fact according to Homme 90% of the songs are about sex....
GOD IS IN THE RADIO...this was a song Homme wrote while with KYUSS (get SKY VALLEY today) but didn't fit with the band's musical direction at the time...but it's a bad-a$$ song (..."you come back..another day...and do no wrong"...) the solo is the mightiest of all solos on the album.
SONG FOR THE DEAF is just epic (especially live).
This album is their best..hands down...get the version with the DVD (you get to see them in studio and at early shows with Grohl...plus Homme directs Grohl on some of the songs...the DVD is really insightful).

Ghrol fans unite!.......2003-03-19
I accidentally picked up the clean version of this album at a local superstore. I always open CDs as I leave the store and throw away all the wrapper stuff in the trash. I didn't realize that I had the clean version until I cracked the cellophane airlock.
The editing on this version of the album is a treat. All swear words are beeped out with a compressed, grating loud beep. Maybe that is par for the course, but I would hope not. It kind of seems like a joke the way they beeped out the swearing. Sort of a curse upon thee for buying the album from a superstore.
The clean version is not bad though. There really isn't that much objectionable material. Most of it is contained in "Six Shooter". I would recommend the explicit version for moral reasons, but you can't really go wrong with this one.
The rockin is hard. Not as heavy as the old Kyuss stuff. But the creepy melodicism of Queens more than makes up for it. "First It Giveth", "The Sky Is Fallin'", and "Hangin' Tree" are all better than "No One Knows"; but the format might be too long for radio. This isn't '72 after all. People can't be expected to listen to only one thing for more than 2.75 minutes.
If you are a fan of music and/or think Craig Killborn is a dish then this would be a great album for you.

Album Description
The 1953 recording features the spectacular twenty-six year old Leontyne Price, accompanied by Samuel Barber at the Library of Congress. The duo's entire recital is issued whole for the first time. In this recital the soprano and composer give the world premiere performance of Barber's "Hermit Songs", and perform Henri Sauguet's "La Voyante" (The Fortune Teller) and other songs by Barber, Poulenc and Fauré.This remarkable 1938 recording, released to the public for the first time, gives us the 28 year old baritone, Samuel Barber in 12 songs, accompanying himself at the piano. These little known performances reveal Barber as a singer/player of uncommonly deep communicative power. The performances (issued in cooperation with Mr. Barber's estate and the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia) include folk songs from England, America, the Tyrol and Tuscany as well as lieder by Schumann, Brahms, Mendelssohn, C.P.E Bach and Schubert.

good not excelent but close.......2003-05-01
Brilliant.......2003-01-20
Their first single of the album "No One Knows" is a funky, upbeat tune which is almost always guaranteed to get you up and rocking. Dave Grohl provides excellent drumming all throughout the album, but this would be the finest example of just how good he is.
"First It Giveth" is another highlight, one of the best tracks on the album. It is a great song, backed up by good vocals, a rocking riff and a stunning chorus.
Track 8, "Go With The Flow" is much like "First It Giveth" in its rock riff and its excellent vocals. One of the band's finest songs they have ever made.
"A Song For The Deaf" is a terrific contrast. The song starts with a heavier riff than most of the other songs on the album, but once the song reaches the chorus, it is a much mellower riff and vocalist Mark Lanegan joins with main vocalist Josh Homme in a dark, monophonic tune.
Overall, this album is magnificent and impressive and much like Rated R, it has stoner rock tunes, but this time with a bit more of the rock and a bit less of the stoner (but not too much). This album is definitely one of my favourite (if not favourite) album of 2002 and it will continue to be in my CD player for a VERY long time.
If you love great rock, buy this album. You won't regret it.
