5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2007-06-21

I am so dissapointed that John 5 no longer plays guitar for Marilyn Manson. Now he plays for Rob Zombie. This album truly rocks!

5 out of 5 stars Just as impressive and original as the debut.......2007-04-22

John Lowery (stage name: John 5) returns with his sophomore, and last, release under Shrapnel Records. With most artists, each album following the debut is usually not as impressive or as original, but Songs for Sanity is just the opposite. Formerly involved in Marilyn Manson, John was held back musically, and his guitar skills are let out of the bag in his debut, Vertigo. While it seemed tricks and licks were wildly integrated because it was the first opportunity John received to display his solo talent, Songs for Sanity is refined and sharp.

John handles all guitars, but there are two noteworthy guest appearances. Steve Vai contributes lead guitar on the second half of each of the two main solos on "Perineum," and Albert Lee contributes lead guitar on the first solo on "Death Valley." John also handles all bass, except on "Fiddler's" by Larry Klein and Josh Jones. As John has drawn comparisons to the likes of Steve Vai, it seems fitting to have both Vai and Lee contribute. He is quickly making a name for himself in the guitar world.

Songs for Sanity is just as original as the debut, but is slightly more impressive. Like Vertigo, this track listing is both metal and bluegrass/country. Here, however, the songs sound like they are performed with more feeling and maturity, which makes for a better album. With one solo effort under John's belt, he has had the experience, and it appears evident he has made some technique adjustments.

3 out of 5 stars Really good, but very repetitive.......2007-02-13

I love this album for the diversity of the sound he got, and how the songs go from really hard rock, to a countryish-blues mix. The only flaw i found was that he was very repetitious after awhile of listening to the album as a whole. He starts off firing with all cylinders with "Damaged", and that song is good. and then the next couple are almost as hard. Then he completely does a 360 and plays a straight up banjo countryish-blues song. its great but he keeps that idea for the rest of the record, which i though got kinda stale after hearing the country sound twice more after the first song i mentioned. "Blues Balls" was the highlight for me considering thats my favorite genre to play, or listen to, being that i play guitar. but overall recommended if ur into hard rock constantly and then a slow song occasionally.

5 out of 5 stars This guy has chops!!!!!! He's ripping it up!.......2007-01-19

Plain and Simple. A very good guitar CD from a very underrated player! This guy is great. He's killin' on a telecaster, shredding and pickin' his way to glory! All the songs are great. I find myself listening to all of them over and over. I suggest that one listen to the snippets and get a good feel for his playing! As a guitar CD, it's a definite recommendation to buy, as a rock n' roll CD, check it out and see if it's your speed. Either way, you'll hear some excellent music/guitar playing.

5 out of 5 stars one word ---- WOW!!.......2006-09-10

I've never been a fan, but I saw John 5 with Rob Zombie a couple of weeks ago and was impressed. I must say this CD is more than I expected. I mix of solid rock, metal, blues, acoustic, and even country....all very well done.

I recommend this CD very highly!!!!!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome follow up.......2006-09-04

My review will feature descriptions of my favorite songs on the CD.
This album opens with one of John-5's most brilliant songs to date, "Damaged", which has a heart attack inducing opening, a rediculously addicting chorus riff, and of course, inhuman guitar playing throughout the verses.

Sin begins with an errie feel, adding heavy guitar and drum fills as the song progresses. The tempo then picks up, and offers a spastic dose of quick guitar work and some double-bass based drum fills that make me drool.

Blues Balls is very well composed song played in a blues style with John's touch of heavy guitar thrown in. The opening riff and the chorus really make the song.

Gods and Monsters is a darkly composed track with a neat, creepy riff, a simple drum backtrack, and some well placed piano notes to add to the feel of the song. The song climaxes into groups of heavy sections, and back into the creepy pattern.

2 Die 4 is a very relaxing acoustic track (with a lot of background noise, I think it might be someone breathing with heavy distortion, or a shore or breeze, or something!). I really like that John added this track to the album, it helps demonstrate his versatility.

Perenium, featuring Steve Vai, is a choatic metal song that is basically a battle of guitars amidst a driving drum groove. The endless solo-ing is hard to describe; it's more abstract than most of John-5's other songs, but always ends out fitting well.

Denoument sums the album up brilliantly. The beginning of the song borrows from the dark themes of "Sin" and "Gods and Monsters", and leads into a very expressive chorus, which itself is like a slower version of the chorus of "Damaged". The song leaves you with a concluded feeling, yet also hungry for more John-5. I can't wait for his next solo album.

THE GENERAL IDEA: This CD is an awesome follow up to Vertigo (also excellent), and even though I didn't mention any of the country songs, they fit well into the album (who knows how he does it). This album was meant to be a progressive, instrumental, country/metal album, and that's exactly what it ended out becoming. BUY THIS ALBUM! This guy doesn't deserve to have his hard work ripped off from Limewire and the like.

3 out of 5 stars Another "Losfer Words"?.......2006-01-12

Another CD of instrumentils only? That can't go too far! It's not like Mr. Five can't locate a singer: working with the likes of David Lee Roth, Rob Halford, Trent Reznor, Marilyn, and now Rob Zombie it's obvious he has connections. For his third CD John 5 should do what Tony Iommi and Dave Grol did for their debut solo projects and hire a different singer for each track. "Iommi" (2000) and "Probot" (04) are two of the best metal CDs this decade, mainly because of their diversity.
John 5 (with diverse singers) could easily give us an album of equal greatness.
