Whenever Paul McCartney's storied life has hit personal or professional hard times, he's wisely returned--figuratively and literally--to his musical foundations. In the Beatles' final, troubled days, it was Get Back, the aborted return-to-roots project salvaged as Let It Be, and during his late-'80s solo doldrums it was the '50s rave-up CHOBA B CCCP (a.k.a. the "Russian Album"). In the wake of Linda's passing, McCartney "gets back" to a motley dozen '50s hits, B-sides, and obscurities, and pens three surprising originals that neatly fit their mold. Using a band of seasoned British vets (including Pink Floyd's Dave Gilmour and Mick Green from Johnny Kidd & the Pirates on guitars, and Deep Purple's Ian Paice on drums) whose own unbridled affection for this music radiates from every track, McCartney tackles the familiar (Gene Vincent's "Blue Jean Bop," Elvis Presley's "All Shook Up") and unfamiliar (the Vipers' UK skiffle hit "No Other Baby," Carl Perkins's "Movie Magg") alike with enthusiasm, if not slavish devotion, as witnessed by his nifty zydeco revamp of Chuck Berry's "Brown Eyed Handsome Man." The Mac originals "Try Not to Cry" and "What It Is" (and the choice of Ricky Nelson's "Lonesome Town") seem to deal not-so-obliquely with his love and loss, yet are delivered with an upbeat confidence that seem to belie his mourning. In the end, Run Devil Run may be as much personal exorcism as it is loving musical recapitulation, and McCartney is in peak vocal form throughout. --Jerry McCulley

Vintage McCartney Rock and Roll.......2006-11-23

This 1999 recording of several relatively obscure rock and roll songs from the 50's and 60's, sprinkled with some familiar tracks and a few of his own, finds McCartney in vintage form turning back the clock, throwing every ounce of himself into this project which was recorded at the speed of light with some of his pals including Dave Gilmore and Ian Paice.

Afte Linda died Paul didn't know if he could sing again, and with a few workouts on this material, it did not take long until he found his voice, the exuberant rock and roll voice of his youth with its wailing, crooning and well timed rasps. For a man in his late 50's to pull of the vocal on the song "Run Devil Run" is something to behold.

This is a fantastic disc to put on at a party and when you consider the range of the songs, it really is a versatile performance from Paul. Paul is always one to emerge with music in times of trouble and he rocks the house with Run Devil Run.

Track down the DVD of the Cavern Performance of the same year, it is probably his best music DVD.

Joy in music.......2006-07-20

This is one of the joyful listening I've ever experienced-and I've experienced quite a few in my 58 years. His love of this very American music simply radiates in every song. Just try to sit still while listening to "Brown Eyed Handsome Man". I dare you!

Paul Rockin' & Rollin'.......2006-06-06

Forget the comparison that Lennon did the very same type of LP back in the 1970's (his "Rock 'N "Roll" album). Here we have Paul doing what he doesn't do too often these days and that's flat out rock. McCartney takes a trip down memory lane and covers a bunch of 1950's rockers that inspired him when he was a younger lad. The production is a bit on the over polished side (it could have sounded a little more raw) but the songs are loud and fun nonetheless.

Paul McCartney's best solo album in YEARS!.......2006-05-23

Paul McCartney's first album since 1997's Flaming Pie entitled Run Devil Run was released in October of 1999.
The album was Paul's first since the death of wife Linda in 1998.
The album was made at the urging of Paul's good friend, Pink Floyd guitarist/vocalist David Gilmour. In March of 1999, both Paul and Dave(whom Macca had been friends with since the recording of Dark Side of the Moon and a huge Floyd fan and predicted that Pink Floyd would become huge back in 1967) got together with Deep Purple skin basher Ian Paice, former Johnny Kidd guitarist Mick Green and 70s one hit wonder Pete Wingfield on keyboards and recorded Run Devil Run at Abbey Road Studios in London.
Paul co-produced the album with Chris Thomas(whom worked with Paul on 1979's Back to the Egg and had worked with Dave on Dark Side and The Division Bell).
Run Devil Run kicks off with Paul's take of Blue Jean Bop which is at first Paul singing with his bass then Ian comes in with the drums, then Mick comes in with his Fender Strat and lastly Dave using his Fender Esquire Telecaster(the same one that Dave had pictured on his About Face album). She Said Yeah is next and was excellent. The two Elvis covers of All Shook Up and I Got Stung are excellent. The former is sped up with some drums by Dave Mattacks who played drums on this track and Macca's original Try Not to Cry.
Other highlights are Lonesome Town with David Gilmour doing a killer guitar solo showing his guitar playing hasn't gone soft in recent years, Little Richard's Shake a Hand, the title cut(a Macca original), What it Is(another Macca original) and the closing Let's Have a Party which had Gilmour and Mick trading leads in the middle.
The album was modestly received hitting #26(not bad considering competing in a N' Sync, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears and Christina Aguliera music world in the US in 1999). This was the best covers album ever and is rivaled by the 2004 Rush album Feedback.

Shake A Hand!!!.......2005-11-06

Anything with Paul, David Gilmour, Ian Paice (and Dave Mattacks) would get my attention immeditately, but a record of classic covers is a dream come true. I think Paul is best rock/pop singer ever, and his version of "Shake A Hand" absolutely floors me - one of the best rockin' vocals of all time - worth the price of the record alone. It's an astonishing track...

Great album!
I just sat back,closed my eyes,and relived great memories of these great serials that I saw as a kid.The music is so accurate
that it could have been lifted from the films instead of re-creations.I reccomend it highly!

This collection far exceeded my expectations........1999-10-18

I've been a huge fan of Republic Pictures serials for many years and was thrilled to discover this collection. James King and the CinemaSound Orchestra have captured the pulse pounding tempo of those classic Republic Serials perfectly!!! The music brought back fond memories of watching Commando Cody (The Rocket-Man), the Masked Marvel and all the rest. If you are a Republic Serial fan or just love great motion picture music, this CD is a must have for your collection.

TOP NOTCH HARDCORE.......2004-09-01

This cd is definitely one of the most underrated hardcore cds of our day. Front to back - a SOLID album - no weak sh*t here.
I was lucky to catch them in a little bar in southeast PA in '02 and have to say they put on a GREAT show. What's more impressive is that they gave 150%, even though there (unfortunately) wasn't a big crowd. Real nice guys.
This is a must have for fans of SOIA & CRO-MAGS.

Run Devil Run's Indie release.......2001-08-09

This is Don Foose's (spudmonsters) new band. Well, they've been around since late '99 but anyways. This disc is an excellent cd for putting newer kids into old school hardcore, but keeping them in touch with modern day dance riffs. The songs are fast and choppy with positive lyrics. If you're into sick of it all but like hardcore breakdowns, this is your disc. Definetely a change from old spudmonsters lyrics wise.

DEVIL ROCKS.......1999-10-28

This Devil rocks! To those who have wondered what McCartney's loss would do to his music, wonder no longer and Run Devil Run to the Shopping cart and put this in your pipe and smoke it. It's great. The band and singers are fabulously tight-yet-loose and honorable mention goes to David Gilmour. So what if there are only four Macca tunes...That's four tunes better off than we were! McCartney-I've been a fan for 35 years. Did I expect a lot? Hell, yes! Did I get it? HELLEN(Hellen, helen) Hellen Wheels! (yes!) Similar to the 'Russian' album, but with more obscure rock n roll classics. I like that though, because it brings to light some wonderful old songs that otherwise might've gone unheard. Paul's voice is in full flight! You know, the old electrified tomcat! Buy it today.
