Product Description
Best known as the lead singer/pianist for the Celtic soul'n'roll band Hothouse Flowers, Liam O'Maonlai has enjoyed a concurrent career as a traditional Irish musician and singer. Indeed, both aspects of this resume come together in his first solo album, Rian. Much of the Flowers' appeal has been based on their passion for and commitment to fusing their Irish heritage with rock, pop, soul, and world music influences--a passion and commitment that has informed most of Liam's music life. Liam has worked with Carly Simon, the Indigo Girls, Ron Wood (Rolling Stones), Def Leppard, and has music that appears in the film Waking Ned Devine. Digipak.

5 out of 5 stars One of his best........2007-07-24

lush, cascading arrangements, and above all MEMORABLE MELODIES make this little gem one of my favorite Oldham releases. His unique warble is especially endearing here, matched w/ Rian Murphy's(Drag City)compositions. My favorite is track 3; days will pass before I can get it out of my head, and I could be nuttier than squirrel turds, but the last song is reminiscent of Neil Diamond. All 4 tracks are killer, and the cover art is pretty rich too.
**For some more Rian Murphy stuff, check out the commentary tracks he contributes to Pavement's "Slow Century" DVD--funny, funny stuff.

drag city compatriots like edith frost, archer prewitt and jim o'rourke accompany will and rian on this stable of barqoue oldham hymns and even sing alongs...it casts magic in your fever and gives you the respite that only will can....for he is like the fountain in everything that weeps until we see fit to toss our commerce in...pretty and eery, with the right amount of tension thrown in....i say buy it and see your life blossom...so put down the latest fill-in-the-blank [music] you were thinking about and get this....and then start on the fortunate journey of all of the palace era renderings up to bonnie prince billy.... for it is all the reason god gave us ears.

This EP sounds different than any other Palace/Oldham album I've heard. It put me off a little at first, but it's one of those CDs that sounds better with each listen. Much more polished production. Lots of violins and backup vocals. Oldham's voice sounds great, cracking in and out of key and often barely reaching the notes.

      5 out of 5 stars The Super-Virtuosi: Godowsky & De Waal.......2005-07-19

This is a CD that gathers one of the most important composers of classical music world together with one of the most talented young pianists of today. Godowsky's technically demanding masterpieces such as "Passacaglia" and "Künstlerleben" flow through De Waal's hands with such ease. Especially, his interpretation of "Künstlerleben" is worth taking place among the best. About "Passacaglia", he plays the virtuosic passages so fast and blows one after another with stunning sound quality. However, this speed makes him rush into the Fugue and end the piece without ever giving listener the opportunity to think about what is going on. Timing for this piece is 16:45 and this is a lightning speed compared to both Marc-André Hamelin's 18:47 and Antti Siirala's 19:30. The other pieces in this CD are also played powerfully. Schubert's "Gute Nacht" and "Moment Musical" are gems. High quality recording.

      Total timing - 58:23

      5 out of 5 stars (No title)........2000-12-15

This album served as Rian De Waal's debut album for Hyperion. On it, he makes a judicious selection from Godowsky's teeming and exquisitely decadent art. Although Godowsky's wildly super-virtuositc technical demands may exaggerated in score, it is thanks to pianists like Rian De Waal that we can often lose this impression. One shining example is the Godowsky Passacaglia: 44 variations, cadenza, and fugue on the first 8 measures of Schubert's Unfinished Symphony's opening movement. Played by the lunatic Barere, but dismissed by the madman Horowitz as impossible, this piece had to wait some years before a true mainstream appreciation. And what a glory De Waal makes of it! His rich and sonorous tone, and inexorable power and contol even in the most death-defying turns and leaps of terrorizing strength and violence is an awe-inspiring revelation, especially considering a shortage of reference materials previous to the time of conception. Elsewhere in Godowsky's indefatigable elaboration, he is similarly successful, weaving through the most treacherous of mazes with absolute assurace, sounding at once cool and heroic. One fall, on Godowsky's other side, De Wall doesn't show much understanding of a yearning touch. But I give this disc Five Stars, anyway, especially since it has such great sound!

5 out of 5 stars The Ideal Introduction to Godowsky.......2000-03-08

Leopold Godowsky (1870-1938) is, arguably, the greatest pianist that has ever lived. A prodigy of Mozartian or Mendelssohnian gifts (he was playing the piano at 3 - without lessons!) he had a Bachian sense of counterpoint married to a Chopinesque sense of the piano and its capabilities. This caused him to produce music of fearsome complexity. Rian de Waal here gives a nearly flawless Godowsky recital. Indeed his performance of Godowsky's Passacaglia & Fugue on a Theme of Schubert, as well as Godowsky's Symphonic Metamorphosis on Strauss' "Artist's Life" cannot be bettered. If you want the perfect CD to introduce you to Godowsky's strange art deco sound world then this is it. If you are a Godowsky fan and have somehow missed this CD then you are in for a treat.

5 out of 5 stars Not for everyone..........2006-08-30

Every word on this CD is in Irish, and Maonlai's voice is rough and a bit harsh on the ear. As Maonlai himself says in the liner notes, "This work...is imperfect. The perfection comes between the one singing and the listener." But having said all that, this is a really cool album--even more impressive because Maonlai does all of the singing (including the harmonies) and plays most of the instruments himself. His voice is profoundly expressive, his whistle playing precise. It's a terrific mix of sean nos singing, drum and whistle instrumentals, and just a dab of techno-celt. I only wish he had put the lyrics in the liner notes.

5 out of 5 stars Good classic celtic..............2006-03-02

I have always been a fan and I purchased this without having heard any of the music. It is very deeply felt, passionate stuff. These aren't cliched or overdone pieces. He chose some different things and it is more in the vein of Clannad, only earthier.
Love his Gaelic singing, and singing in general.

5 out of 5 stars déanta na fírinne -- Songs that tell the truth.......2005-12-19

Rian - to mark or record. Well, this album is certainly a worthy rian. I first heard Liam Ó Maonlaí as a traditional Irish musician on the Irish in America soundtrack. On that record he sings unaccompanied (except for Paddy Moloney's pipes in between) in Gaelic a traditional song about potatoes; it absolutely blew me away. Eagerly I awaited a solo record. It's been seven years, but well worth the wait. What inspired me before is on Rian in abundance - perhaps with even more intensity. What is so successful about this record is its sparseness. The songs alternate between Irish whistle and Mr. O'Maonlai's voice singing in Gaelic. When Liam sings, he sings alone, or at most with a cello or flute accompanying him. His voice is magnificent, especially in its range and ability to capture all the rolls and subtle rises and falls of these old songs. The songs are all from Connemara (western Ireland), which he learned from friends and relatives growing up. There is something eery, spiritual, and deeply affecting about these songs. They move slowly and powerfully - and perhaps gain strength from being sung in another, older tongue. At times they take on an almost Middle Eastern feel, especially on the second track (the Lord's prayer in Irish). The songs that are not sung are Irish whistle tunes, which he also chooses to play alone (mostly). The choice of presenting material in this way reveals that Liam has supreme confidence in his own abilities as a musician, and supreme confidence in the music to speak for itself - songs that have persisted over generations and generations. Buy this record and listen closely. It is a breath human expression at its most primal - and how fine that expression is!

4 out of 5 stars Homage & innovation for Irish trad music: boldly arranged.......2005-10-21

"Rian" in Irish means a "trace, track, or sign." The path Liam treads here has been an ancient one, but his fresh vigor makes his itinerary here far from well-trodden. It's a very satisfying solo work, and doubly impressive for me since I never really cared much about Hothouse Flowers. I did wish, when I read about its members Liam and Fiachra O Braoanain, that their Irish-language and sean-nos inspirations would have enriched their pop-soul sounds.

Now, much much later, Liam has come through with a strong album that never lets up. I played it for my pre-teen sons so they could hear a younger singer-songwriter who had grown up with both rock and traditional music take on a mixture of tastefully integrated international influences, percussive and bodhran-based beats, full-on and carefully delivered "old style" sean-nos singing, and fine whistle playing to boot. We need examples for the future of the promise and fulfillment of the swirl of the traditional with the unexpected, and this takes the ideas of the global and the village to bring them into the city--that is, to combine what works not out of novelty or exploitation or trend-spotting as too many musicians/artists have done with indigenous cultures, but out of delight, talent, and sheer enthusiasm.

The album's production, by John Reynolds (I presume the same who's the former partner of Sinead O Connor and was in her band; I only wish the too-hesitant Sean Nos Nua by Sinead would have been energized as successfully in an attempt to reinvigorate the tradition as Liam's offering is indeed), highlights the confident manner in which the tracks unfold. They're sequenced so as to keep a listener not knowing what's next--vocal, percussion, whistle, or world-blend. This variety prevents the record from getting stale, or too mired in one of these four approaches. Liam comes across as being at home in all of them with equal ease. If you like this, then not only seek out his role model, credited on the back cover, Sean O Riada--known for integrating classical and Irish melodies as well as spurring on the Chieftains and thus the Irish music revival in the late 60s onward--but two albums released in the 90s on the New Jersey indie label by Sean's son Peadar. These, while more eclectic, with a similarly bold rethinking of "duchas"--the native Irish word for pride in heritage (like the Welsh hireath a bit?), make also for intelligent counterparts for Liam O Maonlai's welcome innovative yet, in its blend of the spare and the lush, the subdued and the swaggering, respectful nod to his forebears.

My only hesitancy, and the loss of a rare fifth star from me, is not with the album, nor its lovely cover art, but the fact that the handsome lyrical booklet oddly repeats, in handlettering and print, only brief notes by Liam to some of his traditional song contents. This is done on many folk albums and has a long precedence; admittedly the tunes are in the public domain, so the lyrics are not always added--especially to overly familiar songs in the repertoire--for today's listeners.

But, in this case, I think a wrong decision was made, given Liam's appeal to probably an atypical section of an audience who might be little versed in sean-nos. Space could and should have been given for the lyrics themselves, in Irish and perhaps with translations, that could have better provided needed insight for listeners less familiar with the style appropriated here. As I read in an Irish Voice interview that alerted me to the release of this album, Liam assumes that few of his audience will know the Irish in which he sings. True enough, but why not give a wider exposure to the language for less-informed fans, and a chance for those of us who know some Irish to more accurately--given the tricky nature of orthography vs. pronunciation in Irish--to follow along?

The website for the record company, Rian Records, by the way, is not active as of the the date I write this; the personal site liam-o-maonlai .com is well made (I'd like to see more samples of his art, as he's talented) but offers no details on the album or its lyrics. But check out the fantastic array of promotional posters for Liam's North American tour. They are very well executed in a wide range of styles recalling the glory days of the late 60s without being mere rehashes or imitations, and each is distinct from the others in an aesthetically pleasing and visually captivating manner. Maith thu! ("good on ye," literally!5-star content, 4-star presentation.

5 out of 5 stars The Pure Drop.......2005-10-19

I'll never understand why Hothouse Flowers never found a bigger audience in North America. They had more interesting tunes, they were more fun than U2, but less anthemic. Lord knows the Yanks like anthems, something they can march into foreign countries with.
Anyway, time withered away and Liam O Maonlai's band withered with it. There is the occasional release from Dublin, but their heyday has passed. I suppose that has given Liam pause to consider his heritage. He does here with so fine a recording, raw, primal and pure that he serves to honour and advance the sean nos tradition, particularly as it was practiced fado fado o shin i gConnemara. This is positively brilliant singing, feadog stain playing and bodhran syncopation as you'll ever hear on any CD at any point in the great canon of Irish traditional music. The dedication here is to Sean O Riada, and certainly O Riada would be flattered by so spiritual a reading.
There are many standout tracks, and it's hard to single out my favourite, but even O Maonlai's compositions ring with an authenticity that is infused with his roots. Accompaniement is minimal, most often just O Maonlai himself on feadog stain and bodhran, or the occasional bass pedals and swell of a church organ. It is as wild as the landscape below Roundstone, as desperate and as spiritual as anything you'll ever hear from a remote corner of an island that, prior to the Celtic Tiger, was the last harbinger of a people who were close to the earth. How much of that remains, I couldn't possibly say. This disc, though, will remind you of what was once a very living culture.
