Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The contemporary crowning of drum machines, samplers, and synthesizers have led to a brigade of block-rocking beats, each successive blast becoming louder, leaner, and meaner. Meanwhile, Pinback create a more laid-back blend of pop music, augmenting gentler acoustic sounds with contemporary technology. The result is rainy-day music for the next millennium. The catchy fingerpicking on "Hurley," bound with a simple snare and bass, recalls early Folk Implosion; all snowy sighs and melancholy melody, it's easily the disc's strongest track. A couple of cuts are so nonthreatening they recede into soft-rock background music, but the multi-instrumentalist duo Armistead Burwell Smith IV (formerly of Three Mile Pilot) and Rob Crow deliver a mostly satisfying bouquet of thoughtful, somewhat spooky electro-emo pop. --Jason Josephes

5 out of 5 stars Reference piece.......2007-01-10

I have a reference quality system (Wilson, Classe, Levinson, Transparent) and this is one of my reference recordings. Most find the music a bit odd but I just love it. Harmonizing baratone guitars with an unbelievable clarity that defies where and how it was recorded. This is a fantastic accomplishment both in terms of the music and the recording.

5 out of 5 stars Solid album all the way through.......2006-08-25

Not just one or two good songs, this album is full of great songs. You can play it all the way through, which seems rare these days. Pinback's sounds are intricate and unique. I cant get enough!

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Pinback album.......2006-06-16

Offcell amazed with the 12 minute epic grey machine, Summer in abaddon had its moments of greatness, but it is Blue-Screen Life that remains as their best album to date. Song after song, Pinback delivers with the some of the most fascinating, endlessly replayable indie pop tracks i have ever heard.

Offline P.K. is an extremely good start, sporting the two vocalists trading off lyrics as well as fairly intricate basslines which continue through the disc. Concrete Seconds, Boo, and Penelope are instantly catchy. The remainder of the cd is great until it gets to tres- then its amazing. I could not imagine a more perfect closer than this profoundly beautiful masterpiece. The lyric " There's a definate feeling buried down/ recking itself taking you with me" is repeated through much of the song yet never loses its beauty.
this was actually the first indie album i listened to and is an album of which i compare all others.

3 out of 5 stars Intellegent catchy ness.......2006-05-23

3 1/2 stars

The repetition found throughout this disc leads to inspired head bopping serenity that doesn't quite sound, or effect, like anything else out there. At times overcome by their elaborate progressive-pop echo chambers, they often triumph in delivering that rare combination of quirkiness and melancholy, driven by a hungry ear from singer/guitarist in their layering tendencies inside the already intricate guitar and vocal layouts. Unabashedly melodic and quirky with subtly progressive undertones, Pinback can definitely help build some great bridges for some terribly dull music collections for alot of young listeners out there..

5 out of 5 stars Best of Pinback.......2005-12-18

Every Pinback album is great, but Blue Screen Life as a whole is my favorite. There really is nothing to compare it to. They have one of the most unique, individual sounds out there right now that is also very listenable. The beats and things they do with the bass and baritone quitar are incredible and like none other. Sure they have their influences, but they have created their own thing, taking full advantage of new home recording technology making simple yet very complex arrangments. Take a listen and see for yourself, it may not be for everybody, but if your like me you will fall in love with the first listen.

Album Description

Although it may seem like gentle pop music at first, the brilliance of "Summer In Abaddon" is slowly revealed over repeated listenings. The songs are buoyant and lively at times, melancholy and dark at others, and always resonate with an underlying intensity. Pinback lays out beautiful melodies that are deceptively complex, layering sounds and instruments upon one another and trading contrasting vocal parts with ease

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Plateau Music.......2007-07-17

Pinback are really talented musicians, but I can't help but feel like they achieve only half their potential. I can appreciate that they are going for a unique sound, but in keeping with that, it inevitably makes all their songs sound too similar. Each song sounds like a track that would go between two louder, harder, edgier or whatever tracks. There's such a lack of tension, build up, and climax with this singular, Drop-D acoustic plucking approach. There's no uphill or downhill in the listening experience - just a plateau.

That sad, I really like the song "Fortress."

5 out of 5 stars Celebrated Summer.......2007-04-01

Listening to a Pinback record is about the easiest thing you'll ever do. Their mellow but complex songs are a soundtrack to the working man with a brain and two ears-- soothingly propulsive, powered by choppy guitar lines and fat, hollow-log bass, salted with tasty piano ostinato, and backed by singer Rob Crow, who has a singing voice that makes him sound like he's either constantly drugged or engrossed in something. The guitar tones are perfectly rounded and spongy, and sit chiming and ticking in the middle of everything as if soaking up melody.

Abaddon ("the place of destruction" in the Bible) is a reference to hell. The sleeve art illustrates the listener's colorful descent into an underground bunker beneath a desert at the onset, and their reemergence at the other end. In the complete absence of musical themes like dissonant triads and soul-rending howls to mirror a descent into damnation, we're reminded that hell takes many forms. Sometimes things are destroyed just because they fall apart. This is somehow more fittingly sinister than heavy metal's typical depiction of overt terror and cruelty. The record chronicles a lengthy depression or period of suffering, and the narrator's efforts to come out unscathed-- something fairly universal to humanity.

Like most of Pinback's back catalog, "Summer in Abaddon" is a head-bobbing collection of cleverly disguised lullabies coated with aural superglue. You'll hear the bass riff in "Fortress" mirroring your walk up the escalator, or the sludgy plod of "Non-Photo Blue" following your fingers through yet another ignored forum post ("she's posting all the time, but the boards are down / it's a burned-out building"). The deceptively simple rhythm of "This Red Book" will haunt your subconscious for months.

They should be exalted as the true masters of rhythmic guitar pop. Nearly everything worth commenting on about Pinback arises from their perfect knack for sewing hooks through a heartbeat metronome pulse. Endless rhythmic variations are shelves for the notes and rests to sit on. Pick any Pinback tune at random to listen to. You'll swear you're listening to something human yet mechanical at the same time. Like the endless tick of a fine Swiss watch, the inner workings are ludicrously complex, but the outward result looks simply elegant. "Summer in Abaddon" sees Pinback at the pinnacle of their talents.

4 out of 5 stars Continues to refine .......2006-10-04

Some of the bands tightest work yet, the graceful combination of catchy hooks, playful vocals, and progressive thrust all under a plate of subverted, usually brilliant pop songwriting proves why this band deserves the devoted underground following they have garnered, but begs the question when they will ever actually be accepted by mainstream radio. With such a fine appetite for catchy intelligence, it is a shame the market has not catered more to what has been offered by Pinback, especially by now in the bands continual refinement. Only a few songs bare the less personal, slightly generic mark that bruised some earlier releases; this band more then most around their scene does have quite a unique sound despite the traditional outfit, and thankfully have come to favor their inspired approach with even more body-swaying, smart devotion.

3 out of 5 stars Pinback - Summer in Abaddon.......2006-09-18

This album starts off well.

Really well.

In fact, by three songs into my first listen, I though I had discovered my new favorite album. I recalled the good reviews I'd read online that prompted me to buy my first Pinback album and felt incredibly fortunate that I'd followed their advice.

Those feelings, unfortunately, rarely last.

Imagine my dissapointment when I realized that by track eight I was already having trouble just getting myself to pay attention. Certainly, this wasn't the same band I was listening to just a few songs ago. I found myself thinking: Where is the energy? Where's the variety, the engaging vocals, the toe-tapping instrumentation? I mean, this album was the first time I'd ever heard Pinback, but I felt like I had been somehow misslead by the first three songs.

On subsequent listens I realized the album loses a good part of its charm somewhere between Bloods On Fire and This Red Book. The middle part of the album is chock-full of middle-of-the-road instrumentation [compared to the pulsating energy of Sender and Syracuse, or the swirling melodies of Non Photo-Blue], with engaging hooks as rare as they are short [i.e. the "Stop, it's too late!" bit in Fortress, which just makes the rest of the song pale in comparison]. In a way the songs become undistinguishable by the end. The repetition would easily be more enjoyable if the band threw in a suitably interesting bit or two, but instead when they try to pull this off, like in Bloods On Fire, it sounds too forced and just doesn't fit.

Personally, I like the lyrics. They are mysterious and ambiguous but not too abstract. Terrin Durfey's voice, while distinguished and engaging in the first few songs, gets somehow pushed back and becomes just another instrument by the end of the album. The whole album falls into the background and only reappears somewhat by the final two songs. AFK tries to recapture the passion of the album's opener, but ends up just tripping over itself in the process.

In summation, an consistant, honest effort, but don't be misslead by the first few songs, it is by no means the perfect album it's made out to be. 6/10.

5 out of 5 stars You will NOT be disappointed. .......2006-08-31

Album is good from beginning to end. Music this good deserves to be listened to endlessly. Older albums have some of the best songs by them. Please check out Rob Crow, his contributions to this band seem to be the life blood of the music. My favorite songs are the ones he has written. "sun froze" killer track.

3 out of 5 stars Bubbly Beginnings.......2006-08-06

Ushering in this special little bands quirky approach and unique angle is the most accessible of their albums. Unfortunately many of the upbeat, catchily obsessed songs fall flat to their sharp, more progressively inclined rarities on this one, fleshed out well on further releases. Enjoyable, intelligent pop that would be a taste of their continued dedication to the fetch of the catch, the sob of the bob.

5 out of 5 stars Magic Web of Cords.......2006-02-13

I've been an avid follower of Pinback for two years now. They are NOT the kind of band that you have to listen for awhile to get into the groove of them. Once you unwrap that CD case and pop it in, it goes straight to you body. You realize that your bobbin' your head and walking around the house with the momentum of the songs. Pinback is great chill, drive and relax music. However, they are not to relaxed to where you get bored with it. They throw a few songs in there to get your blood moving. Tempo and rythm in their music is exceptional. If you value gutair and bass going up and down differently but combining themselves perfectly, this is THE band for you.
Pinback uses deep cords and tunes with bass and gutair to hit alot of points.
One thing is that you will always know a pinback song. They have a sound that is similar in all their songs but they change it just enough to allow a great album, and albums. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Great band.......2005-11-25

I love this band it just relaxes me so much. This is up in the top two of my list. Who would know that the 1974 college movie "Dark Star" would get a band named after a person in the movie. Even some of the sounds in their songs are from the movie, like in the song Pinback all that begining noises. And that voice is Pinback. Great band and movie i own both. Buy this cd now. so great.

5 out of 5 stars really beautiful.......2005-06-09

5 out of 5 stars Stunning, Beautiful, and Inspiring.......2004-07-01

To me, I believe this music is simply amazing.
The instruments used are lovely, and complete, giving Pinback its cutting edge. The lyrics are also very, very memorable if you get to know them also. Each song feels like its own masterpiece and single, and is a pleasure to hear. The way each song is played is almost inexprecible. Excellent album, and a MUST to hear... Well, if you are into the Indie Rock genre.
My hat off to Rob Crow and Armistead Burwell Smith...

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The more depressing side of pinback...........2007-01-09

I hate this album, because it is not an album.
An album flows from one track to another.
This is a mash of some of the best, most obscure pinback songs.

Specifically, Messenger, Anti-hu, and Byzantine are three of the most amazing obscure songs Pinback has ever created. The fact that they are put on the same cd as Avignon and Clemenceau bothers me, as it gives the entire cd a sad feel. Clemenceau is the most depressing Pinback song ever created, and it acts as a black hole for the adjacent tracks, sucking dry any residual positive energy left by byzantine or messenger's catchy rhythms.

Then again, it is pinback, and they are brilliant.
And I suppose they need at least one downer album to show they can run the gamut of emotions from unhappy to melancholy.

4 out of 5 stars oh damn........2006-09-25

So Pinback releases a "filler" album, but even for filler outtakes and B-sides, this album floors me. Every few days I switch my focus on another song on Natical Antiques and think...this is my favorite Pinback song of all time...until I switch songs again and say the same.

It is such a treat to get the two versions of Messenger and Avignon, not to mention the original demo versions of Seville and Concrete Seconds. For a musician, life could not be better. We get to see what these songs were like in their early stages, and the changes they made to them to create the polished pop songs we hear on later records.

To me the standout on this record is "Water Runs". Pinback is a mellow band, but Water Runs is even mellow for them. So mellow it's creepy and haunting. I can't get enough of it.

This album is for Pinback fans. I would even call it a reward for being devoted enough to a band to buy a B-Sides CD. It creates a home for songs that should have been on Blue Screen Life, or This is a Pinback CD. So stop scouring ebay for $50 cds with Anti-hu on them, and pick this up.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated, if ever a band was........2006-09-13

Pinback is one of those bands that scream oft-overlooked, until the "OC" anyway. (And you thought that show sucked!) But some of the best money you could ever spend, aside from the Decemberists' records, is Pinback's discography.

This one brings "Anti-Hu" to the masses, which is worth the money alone. Why it's not officially released on Amazon is beyond me.

5 out of 5 stars Pinback's Masterpiece?.......2005-12-18

This EP hasn't been reviewed in two years, which is reason enough to offer a few comments on what is arguably one of their finest records. I would guess that true fans rate four of the five songs as classics in the Pinback catalog of brilliance. In fact, isn't it hard to pick a favorite Pinback song? "Offcell" is one of mine, no doubt.
I finally caught them live at Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC with the amazing Mates of State opening. Incredible live and on CD, Pinback will get the respect they deserve once more people start buying Offcell. Two dollars a song, so what? Invest in the future.

5 out of 5 stars best album ever.......2004-12-13

i think grey machine is my fav. even though its like 11 mins long, it seems very short

5 out of 5 stars cauterize my ears.......2003-12-03

I held out for so long and now I have given in. It's tough to pay close-to-full-length price for a 5-track CD. But, listen to me, and everyone else, and get this as soon as you can.

After Blue Screen Life, I was concerned that Pinback would not be able to out-do themselves. And I contend that this EP does not necessarily out-do any previous work, but bridges a natural progression of sonic excellence.

What drew me to this band was the catchiness(i.e. Penelope, Concrete Seconds) and the grasp and manipulation of rhythm (i.e. Offline PK, Prog). These elements remain in full fluency. What seems different to me is the overall tone. It feels more dark and mechanical to me than previous recordings. I mean this only as an observation, not a criticism. There's just a seriousness that I feel from this.

Perhaps fans should be a bit fearful of a CD like this. It captures a unique band at their most tight and complete so well that it seem like they haven't left much room to grow.

Then again, if you look at Rob Crow's career, there are always new directions-not always linear, at that.

My personal favorite track is "B." It's the one track that sound the most Pinback-esque to me, based on my prior description of why I love this band.

5 out of 5 stars the next step for a band that refuses to stand still.......2003-10-19

pinback's discography is dotted with EPs. while many bands eschew the value of an EP, pinback see them as opportunities to explore different sounds without committing to an entire album's worth of music. The irony, of course, is that one wishes these *would* be longer, but that's the price you pay for progression.

"offcell" is probably their most accomplished and realized work to date. the five songs here show everything that is right about pinback: devastating pop hooks, dynamic song structures, and emotional grandeur. pinback has been lucky enough to find and understand their voice early on; the result is that it flows through them effortlessly -- "emo" music in its strictest of definitions.

all of this culminates in "grey machine," the eleven minute opus that, despite its length, remains engaging and heart breaking. at thirty-odd minutes in length, the EP whets the appetite without becoming overbearing. the taste will only make their next studio album that much more enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2003-10-10

This cd houses 4 of Pinbacks greatest works. "Microtonic Wave" is Reminiscent of "Tripoli" in that the song immediatly grabs you. The next song "Victorious d" starts off slow but builds into an extremely pleasant song. "Victorious d" has been floating on the bands setlists for a number of years, but finally it was placed on this E.P. The title track "Offcell" begins witht he enchanting lyrics "Out of phase Offcenter and Offcell" these lyrics ring throughout the song and never loose their initial beauty. The next song is a near rap by Rob Crow. All these songs are much different then normal Pinback, but this seems to be their most unique song and one of the best. Then on to the GREAT finale, "Grey Machine." There is nothing i could say to describe this song other then a Masterpeice. Anything else wouldn't be sufficient. Only problem with this release is the fact it is only 5 songs, but anything this good can hold me until the next full length album.

5 out of 5 stars Only 4 songs? Not a problem........2003-06-29

This album will keep you listening to those four wonderful songs over and over.

The title track starts out unlike any other pinback song I have heard with a prominent bass line and simple drum beat, but then morphes into an ambient and beautiful sample of vocal harmony and unique melody.

Manchuria, quite possibly my favorite song on the album, immediately hooks you with a catchy piano progression and an upbeat drumbeat. Add some wonderful vocals, harmony, great chorus and absolutely stunning bridge and outro and you have a great song...Manchuria includes all of these things.

Trainer. I love the guitar and bass in this song. They just fit each other so well. Again, more great vocals and a fantastic pre-chorus and chorus.

Finally, we come to June. When I saw Pinback live a few months ago, they ended with June. This 7 minute epic will mezmorize you with the beautiful piano structure, strings arrangement, guitar accents and of course Rob's hypmotizing voice. Try to keep the tears in when the chorus hits...I know I couldn't.

This CD was produced by Jon Auer and ARGO! The Fender Rhodes plays a dominant role in this CD. This Inie Rock band with that emo style can be compared to the likes of Radiohead (Seattle version) and perhaps even Modest Mouse too (yeah, Seattle). Beautiful vocals and melodies sets ARGO apart from the rest. If that doesn't get you interested, wait until you hear the rhythm section. Music for the College and Alt Radio!

5 out of 5 stars There are other CDs.......2007-01-30

I am the owner of Ana-Them Records. My label released this CD and we've been pleased with the results. Firstly, Argo "Jet Packs for Everyone" is one of hopefully many CD's the band. As of Jan 2007 Argo has 4 CD's out. Argo: Attack of the Firebots is their latest release to date (Fish the Cat Records 2006 release). You can find this CD here at Amazon.com while supplies are available. Argo: Needs (EP released by Ana-Them Records) was released in 2005. and Argo: The Fall (EP released by Recovery Records) was released in 2003.

Argo is truly a great band. They are serious about music and full of energy. When I first heard them before I released "Jet Packs for Everyone"; I knew instantly these guys were special. My favorite song on this CD is "No Solutions". Scott (former Argo member...lifetime friend) delivers a very warm and thoughtful performance that continues to inspire me.
