4 out of 5 stars Standing on the shoulders of giants .......2007-04-07

The Smashing Pumpkins comparison is impossible not to talk about when referring to the Silversun Pickups. Singer Brian Aubert sounds like Billy Corgan but icier; Nikki Monninger plays a deep bass and sings a lot like D'arcy from the Pumpkins; Christopher Guanlao provides the snappy drumming. The most interesting aspect of the Pickups, keyboardist Joe Lester, a mad scientist at the machine-like fret board, offers moody atmosphere and weird sounds. No, these guys and gal are not the Pumpkins, but they sure pull off an excellent rendition.

"Kissing Families" begins this EP, starting mellow with soothing vocals by Aubert and Monninger but building momentum and eventually rocking out. A welcome cello finds its way into the song, courtesy of Tanya Haden. "Comeback Kid" has a great guitar groove and hooks you in right away, but the most impressive thing about this band is its penchant for dreamy, hypnotic sounds, as heard on "Booksmart Devil," "The Fuzz" and "Creation Lake." The hidden track, "All the Go Inbetweens," is also a gentle gem that's worth hearing. Like Smashing Pumpkins' "Drown" tune from 1992, off the Singles: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, these tracks are mesmerizing with a faraway vibe, interspersed with heavy guitar. The Pickups enhance that heavy guitar with atmospheric synth sounds that often carry their songs.

Even the name of this EP ("Pikul") sounds like the name of a Smashing Pumpkins album. The CD artwork is also Pumpkinesque, but we won't hold it against the Silversun Pickups. After all, there are way worse bands than the Pumpkins to model yourself after. The key is where the Pickups can take it from here, and their debut full-length record, Carnavas, is a great start.

4 out of 5 stars A fine Pikul.......2007-04-06

Before their debut album, the Silversun Pickups debuted their retrogrunge sound in the "Pikul" EP. Basically this EP does what it's supposed to do -- shows off their style, presents a bunch of excellent songs, and introduces listeners to the Angeleno rockers' grimy, creative rock'n'roll.

It kicks off with one of their poppier songs, "Kissing Families," which blossoms out into a delicious rock song. "It's no wonder that we did it this way/Kept looking forward on paths sideways/It's everything that's connected and beautiful/And now I know just where I stand."

Things speed up even more with the ominous, fast-moving "Comeback Kid," which sounds like a budding hard-rocker. But then they try out some other sounds, not just the hard rock -- a song ruled by lots of clashing cymbals, slow-moving guitar ballads, and some ominous Radioheadish atmosphere over solid riffs and drums.

Basically, don't expect it to sound just like their full-length debut, "Carnavas." "Pikul" is softer and more atmospheric, but still with the hard-rock sound that they're known for. It's not as confident and hard, but there's still plenty of talent and range here.

They have a lot of mingled electric and acoustic guitar, with some drums that can smash or gently rat-a-tat. And there's lots of hard buzzing bass that builds up to grinding walls-o'-sound, and some thick mats of foggy keyboard, which gives a slightly psychedelic flair to their catchy, rawboned melodies.

Brian Aubert often gets compared to Billy Corgan, probably because (like Corgan) he has a rather high voice and some very bittersweetly evocative lyrics. His vocals are pretty good -- a bit androgynous sounding, but melodic and smooth -- and while some songs are too simplistically written, there are seeds of greatness in others. "There are twenty-four parts in a day/That divides me from you..."

In "Pikul," the Silversun Pickups sound like they're stretching their wings, and getting to know their own sound. Not all of it got used later, but it shows that they have plenty of room to expand.

5 out of 5 stars You owe it to yourself..........2006-12-05

Reminiscent of the Pixies (I hate to make comparisons, but it's true - not a bad thing though!), Silversun Pickups is easily one of the best new finds I've had all year. As others have mentioned, Kissing Families is pretty much amazing. I'm going to buy it for that song alone, but all the songs are great. If you like SSPU's Carnavas, you'll also like this (if not even more). You absolutely will not be disappointed... this is a VERY solid band so far.

5 out of 5 stars If you like SSPU, buy this!.......2006-11-20

Don't be shy about buying this EP if you like SSPU. If you aren't familiar with them, give it a try and you may be hooked. Strong tracks. I particularly like Booksmart Devil. Nice bassline & percussion, beautiful guitar, punishing solo (poor amplifier :)

Please also see my review of their Carnavas LP (it's a "Buy" too).

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding performance.......2006-11-10

Purchased this after listening to the full length CD and I think that the Pikul CD is just so much better, a must purchase CD.
