Amazon.com essential recording
"This is the voice of your conscience, baby..." The recording debut of the Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention is a brilliantly wicked counter-strike to the flower power sensibilities prevalent at the time of it's release in 1966. Arguably rock music's first true "concept album," Zappa's aural collage mashes together chunks of psychedelic guitars, outspoken political commentary, cultural satire, and avant-garde musical sensibilities, and then hides it all under cleverly crafted pop melodies. Not diminished in the slightest by the passage of time, Freak Out! remains as vital and relevant today as it was in the 1960's. --Andrew Boscardin

From the Label
The Greenwich Meridian from which all Zappa navigations begin. Originally released in 1966, it's the first Mothers of Invention record & just possibly the first rock "concept" album -- it purportedly inspired Paul McCartney to start writing SGT. PEPPER. A consciousness-raiser, now with 2 Lps on 1 CD. Just try to imagine the '60s (or the world, for that matter) without "Hungry Freaks, Daddy," "Who Are the Brain Police," or "Trouble Every Day," the latter a concert fave well into the '80s. The big finale, "Return of the Son of Monster Magnet," is also here in all its dissonant glory.

5 out of 5 stars A gem of the late sixties.......2007-04-12

This is just one of those classics that you could never get enough of, no matter how many spins it gets. A bizzarre and delightfully off-kilter assault on the ears.

'Freak Out' is one of the more unconventional albums of its time. It has that unmistakingly late 60's acid trip vibe to it that really adds a nice touch to the Zappa insanity. 'Freak Out' is full of unconventional, off-kilter, mock-pop songs that really indulge in Zappa's bizzare sense of humor, such as 'Go Cry on Somebody Else's Shoulder', but then it also has its 'moments of clarity' as well. This album really reminds me of Pink Floyd's 'Saucerful of Secrets' except with more humor and less LSD. Even though the music is aimed in different directions, the production and mix are really similar in my opinion. Everything on this album is completely, delightfully, off the wall.

From the almost instrumental arrangments of vocalizations that would later be the foundation of Mike Patton's Mr. Bungle, to the extremely long sound samples twords the end, everything fits together perfectly in its own, strange, Zappatastic way. The sound samples are really a key part to this album rather than simple filler. Zappa prove to be absolutely and completely original by preforming magnificant pieces of avant-garde art with seemingly mindless noise.

'Freak Out' is truly a gem of the late sixties, and an absolute must have for anyone who considers himself the slightest Zappa fan. Scratch that, for anyone who considers himself a fan of avant-garde music itself, this album is totally classic.

5 out of 5 stars The album that made me a Zappa freak.......2006-12-19

My first Zappa album was the Grand Wazoo and I thought it was pretty good. I didn't think it was that great though. But I am happy that it gave me just enough interest in Zappa to buy this album. This album attacks pop music so well you would think that it was serious and not a joke. A few songs on here have music that is not ironic (Hungry Freaks Daddy, I ain't got no heart, Who are the Brain Police, Trouble Every Day, and Help I'm a Rock) most of the songs are simple pop songs with cliche lyrics and thats what makes them so funny. A concept album is an album that has a theme the entire time or tells a story, and this was the first rock album that had a concept (yes it even preceded Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band)I have since bought one other album by Zappa (You are What You Is) and I can't choose which of the two I like better. I have really connected with his music recently and I plan on buying many of his albums. The lead work is very good for its time, but his later albums definately have WAY better guitar solos. He doesn't satire every form of life on this album like he does on later albums, but he definately satires sappy made for radio pop songs. The songs I listed above are more expirimental and those are my favorites on this album and they will hint at what Zappa will create later. It's hard to belive that so many great albums can come from one man, C'ya latter Zappa Rules!

5 out of 5 stars The first step in Zappa's amazing world...........2006-12-05

In many cases, when an artist puts out a great debut album (or film, book, TV programme), it is quite often a pain in the butt, as they have an enormously difficult time coming up with something greater. Orson Welles's Citizen Kane is considered the greatest film of all time by many critics, how do you top that? Welles was never really able to. Zappa did. Freak Out is an amazing album, yet, Zappa was able to constantly do work that was even better than this album, one of the greatest debuts in rock history. Zappa made interesting and artistic work up until his death (which is the day I'm writing this review). This is one of my favorites, especially the last track, the originally side long song The Return of the Son of Monster Magnet. The producer, Tom Wilson, was on acid when Zappa recorded it, so God only knows what the hell transpired in his mind that night. The social commentary on here is still valid, and this is one of the greatest debuts of all time. Zappa never disappointed....

5 out of 5 stars What can one say?.......2006-12-03

I leave the brilliant musical commentary to the other reviewers who are obviously better qualified.
My review consists of one sentence:

I heard it in 1967; never recovered, never wanted to.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most ambitious (not to mention greatest) debuts of all time.......2006-12-02

Frank Zappa's debut is a bizarre, eclectic, hilarious piece of work that's one of the man's best. To be fair, I'm not at all familiar with Zappa. But the Zappa I've heard, I like a lot. Here he divides his time between sarcastic pieces of social commentary (Hungry Freaks, Daddy; Who are the Brian Police?; You're Probably Wondering Why I'm Here; Trouble Every Day) and hilarious love song parodies (I Ain't Got No Heart; Go Cry on Somebody Else's Shoulder; Motherly Love; Anyway the Wind Blows; How Could I Be Such a Fool?) and he pulls it off either way. Oh, and the twenty-minute sound collage that ends the disc is bizarre, but it's also friggin' hilarious and so ahead of its time, it's jaw-dropping. Wowie Zowie and You Didn't Try to Call Me aren't all that good, but the rest is awesome. At LEAST buy it for the hilarious liner notes.
Best tunes: Hungry Freaks, Daddy; I Ain't Got No Heart; Who Are the Brain Police?; Go Cry on Somebody Else's Shoulder; You're Probably Wondering Why I'm Here; Trouble Every Day; Help I'm a Rock/It Can't Happen Here; Return of the Son of Monster Magnet

4 out of 5 stars Almost the Rosetta Stone of the hippie movement.......2007-06-02

I can't imagine how people must have viewed this album when it came out. They must have thought Zappa and company were complete nuts.

Although it dates pretty heavily, some songs like, "Trouble Every Day" still resonate strongly to modern ears. In high school, I wanted a copy of the vinyl but the $100 asking price at the local used record store scared me away. Thank god for the invention of CDs!

Fun to listen to. Obviously, Frank achieved far greater stuff later on. This, however, is where it all began. Suzy Creamcheese, what's got into ya?

Boy George's musical-theater debut has been unfairly maligned. Set in the glamorously decadent London nightlife of the early 1980s, the show is unquestionably hampered by a weak book. But Boy George's original score (which is credited to his actual birth name of George O'Dowd) boasts several strong pop songs and generously spread-out tour-de-force numbers among a handful of performers. The plot follows the rise to fame of Boy George (impeccably channeled by Euan Morton) and his interaction with lovers and hangers-on, friends and foes. One of the most striking characters is Australian-born performance artist Leigh Bowery, confusingly played by Boy George and Matt Lucas, who took turns during the London run and who both appear on this cast album (George sings "Everything Taboo," for instance, but Lucas gets the striking, Cabaret-like "Ich Bin Kunst"). Confused yet? Well, that's Taboofor you. But never mind the plot: There's plenty of cool, theatrical tunes on this CD, which is more than you can say about most contemporary shows. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

3 out of 5 stars Jolly Good!.......2006-06-16

Boy George may be to blame for the failure of his musical in the United States, though he would rather fault Rosie O'Donnell. Still, critics praised him for his lyrical skills here. There are catchy songs with various gay themes here. I enjoyed it though I've never seen the musical. I think musical fanatics will appreciate having this piece in their collection.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo Boy George!.......2004-05-26

Don't hate me, but I saw the Broadway production five times including closing night. I'm still unclear why this tremendous production did not catch on, it was truly amazing. It's the first time that I've seen a Broadway show more than once. I received my Broadway CD today, as I ordered it the day after the show closed - I understand that it will be available in July, 2004, hopefully sooner in time for the Tonys. The soundtrack CD is absolutely brilliant, completely capturing the fire and energy of the live production. My favorites from the show are still my favorites here, especially Euan Morton's haunting Stranger In This World and his beautiful Pretty Lies; Liz McCartney's unbelievable take on Talk Amongst Yourselves; Guttersnipe (so funny and cute live); I See Through You; Raul Esparza's heartbreaking Petrified plus the opener Freak; Out Of Fashion and the finale, Come In From The Outside. My fingers are crossed that the Tony's are generous to this show and hope Rosie O'Donnell keeps her promise for a return for this show! Get a copy, you won't regret it, even if you are not a Boy George fan, his lyrics and beautiful melodies are his best ever - everything here is eons above so many Broadway shows that run for years. I guess I'll just keep wondering why mass audiences didn't get it, although the show did receive a standing ovation every performance.

5 out of 5 stars holy crapper!.......2004-05-18

well first off, being a huge boy george fan... i was interested in his musical... i bought this cd... and i must admit most of the songs are written well and are catchy.... the most touching song is STRANGER IN THIS WORLD... euan morton's voice is soothing and the lyrics are sad and beautiful... and i recommend this album to all boy fans... although this is the london recording.... (as i patiently wait for the broadway score)... this album is good.... although george only sings on one song its still being rotated in my stereo.... get this album now....

5 out of 5 stars A Very Pleasant Surprise.......2004-04-23

I did not see the Broadway Musical, but I am curious why it failed. I bought the cd just out of curiosity and absolutely love it. The songs are witty and the ballads are especially beautiful. I would highly recommend this cd.

5 out of 5 stars No words to describe this.......2004-04-12

My review is going to be short and i'll get right to the point. Buy the soundtrack. The singers are beyond anything you've ever heard before. Euan Morton, be still my heart. His voice is mesmerizing. The song STRANGER IN THIS WORLD will leave you breathless. Just listen to it and you'll be transfixed, I know I was and am everytime.

4 out of 5 stars Different Perspective.......2006-07-13

Vitamin records has been releasing these cd's like wild fires, just spreading orchestral music to the lesser audience of it. This cd will give you the rock music that originally started this who phenomenon (apocalyptica).

This cd is great for anyone interested in hearing the depth of a music genre. Typically when you hear a rock song, you dont hear really how the singer is supposed to influence the musical sense of the songs, but when the singer's role is put into a more balanced/equal role with the rest of the musicians, it contributes so much more to the musicality of the song. It is great for beginner musicians to understand that the singer has to be in tune with the band because he is added depth to the music, not just vocals. College music majors might also get a kick out of this album as it widens your music perspective.

These cds from vitamin really show how rock is the next evolution to classical music, it shows that although lyrics were originally added, the artists used the basic form of classical music to write songs. They all contain a theme that is repeated in the music, and most offer a "waltz" part to the song, as well as a lyrical bridge.

Good cd for every so often to change you from the norm. really neat to switch out the lyrics every so often with some classical music. Enjoy it!

3 out of 5 stars Not Much To Warrant Repeated Listenings.......2005-01-30

Over the past five years, Vitamin Records has released more than fifty of these String Quartet Tribute albums. They have run the gamut from Metallica to Clay Aiken to Alison Krauss to their most recent tribute to 2Pac. This sampler focuses primarily on alternative/heavy metal/grunge artists. So what you get is a collection of songs made famous by Staind ("It's Been Awhile"), Linkin Park ("In the End") and Korn ("Freak on a Leash").

This album (and all of the others) veers awfully close to novelty status. On first listen, it's a real charge to hear teen angst anthems like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" transformed into sedate chamber music. But it doesn't really warrant repeated listenings. The main problem is that after a few songs, they all tend to sound alike. Twenty years ago, the Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet would include a Jimi Hendrix composition in live performances and the occasional recording, but they had the sense to know that this wouldn't work over the course of an entire album.

And the idea of juxtaposing classical instruments with popular music goes back even farther. In the sixties, the Hollyridge Strings released a series of albums performing the works of the Beatles, Elvis and the Beach Boys. Bottom line? This album will force you to hear these songs in a new way and might get a laugh or two if you slip it into the CD player at your next party, but there's little here to make you come back after you've heard it once. But at $6.98, it's an inexpensive gag gift for the alternative music fan in your life. [Running Time - 50:37]

4 out of 5 stars Where have they been all my life?.......2000-10-03

Four years ago, I heard Freak Power while visiting my brother in Geneva. I liked it so much he made me a tape that listened to ceaselessly. Unfortunately, upon returning to the U.S. and desperately wanting to own the CD, I found that not a single store owned a copy of either album these guys put out ("More of everything...For everybody," and ""Drive-Thru Boot"). I even checked music stores in Vancouver and Toronto during a cross-country trip throughout North America, to no avail. To make a long and boring story short, I finally found copies of both albums (imports, which I generally try avoid due to their inexplicably outlandish price) and gorged myself on Freak Power's power.

Just so you know, the only reason I gave this album, which is a best-song amalgam of the two, a four is because their sound is now a little outdated (as can insinuated by a mere reference to the fact that Fat Boy Slim USED to produce their work, and that they are often mistaken for the Getaway People and G-Love). Despite these trivialities, Freak Power has a sound and style that will always lift a lover of funky, optimistic beats and lyrics to a place where people dance, sing-long, or just sit down and chill out with a smile drawn lazily across their faces. All the tracks on this album refuse to stray far from the boundries of quality, inevitable making the album consistently enjoyable and skip-ahead-free.

If, like me, you want an album overlooked by the masses, yet capable of being enjoyed by all, then consider yourself lucky enough to have read this and buy it. You don't even have to leave the country.

5 out of 5 stars The Power of The Freak.......2000-08-28

This is an upbeat albumn that really sets its own funk rhythm. With lyrics refering to the book "Electric Kool Aid Acid Test" (by Tom Wolfe), each song has a beat and a story of its own. If you want something fun, light and downright FUNKY to listen to - this is the albumn for you!

5 out of 5 stars Turn On Tune In and Feel Good!.......2000-08-26

This CD is hot! It is awesome music that puts you in a good mood automatically with its upbeat tempo and smooth sounds. Many of the sounds and lyrics are different than American stuff so it's fun to have some variety in a music collection. It's also fun to rock out and sing along with the songs. I recommend this CD to anyone who wants to put some groove in thier step.
