Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
In the almost two and a half years it took to make their third album, Canadian rage rockers Finger Eleven have undergone a radical transition. Gone are the overwrought guitars, gratuitous venting, and nu-metal posturing that marked their early work. In their place are some tightly constructed melodies and emotionally articulate lyrics weaved into a coherent song cycle that documents the disintegration of a relationship. This isn't to say the one-time headbangers have gone soft because they're writing love songs and featuring gorgeous acoustic guitar work. There are some bonecrushers among the 11 songs here, but the sturdy rockers are less prosaic than the band's earlier efforts, and it's clear that they have paid more attention to song structure and dynamics, although Scott Anderson's staccato delivery can give you whiplash. --Jaan Uhelszki

From Amazon.ca

Finger Eleven's career shifted suddenly and significantly when their 2003 emo-hit "One Thing" turned the band's career on its axis. At that point, they went from being known as 'the boys from Burlington who used to call themselves the Rainbow Butt Monkeys' to a group whose anthemic slow rock song went Platinum in Canada and Gold in America. So how does a band respond after its widespread fame is the result of just one song? In the case of Them Vs. You Vs. Me, Finger Eleven have consciously stayed away from anything remotely resembling their past and put the focus on the straight-ahead alt-rock formula that they've consistently excelled at. There are certain old-school rock influences that bleed clearly through their music, from Rush-isms in the form of frenetic time changes ("Sense of a Spark") to "Talking to the Walls" and "Lost My Way" which evoke Peter Gabriel-era Genesis. Frontman Scott Anderson's voice is impressive throughout, but when he sings ballads, especially "Window Song" and "Easy Life," something enables him to appeal to a whole different audience than traditional alt-rock fans. There is no 'one thing' on this disc that will allow them to reach the heights of their self-titled CD, just a consistency that will provide longtime fans reason to appreciate the band even more. --Denise Sheppard

4 out of 5 stars Better Than Expected!.......2007-07-13

After seeing lukewarm reviews, I went into this with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised! The songs were not all "One Thing" imitations, but rather the band has gone in a different directly with their music. Two of the songs even have a slight 'twang' to them, and while I despise country music, the 'twang' works well on this CD.
Ironically, Amazon has paired this with Chevelle's latest, and those two CD's are currently my top two.

5 out of 5 stars notice a pattern here?.......2007-07-09

notice how everyone who says this is my first time hearing F11 i love it and they give it 5 stars? yea..cuz its a good album..all you 1 star guys own greyest of blue skies and your wanting a repeat...well f11 dosent do that... thats like watching and loving super troupers then renting their 1st release called puddle cruisers and hating it because you wanted another super troupers out of it....but would you have liked the movie if youd never seen super troupers?..most likely....NEVER judge someone on their other works. and you won't ruin the music for yourself.... if them vs you vs me was released my ohh say...some band called cheetah lol and you heard paralyzer...youd prob like the album...

5 out of 5 stars What a great new concept album!.......2007-07-08

I'm a new fan and picked this one up the day it came out because of Paralyzer. I listened for a couple weeks and liked it a lot, then I put it away so I didn't get burned out on it.

I listened again today driving from Philly to DC and really paid attention. Aside from the myriad classic rock influences that can be heard and the solid musicianship, this disc is quite the concept album. Best one I've heard in a long time and I'm very, very rarely impressed by new musical offerings. I understand that this may not be the same sound as their previous offerings but I really don't care. This is good music.

5 stars!

2 out of 5 stars No more paralyzers?.......2007-07-08

I love Paralyzer.. it has a harder sound to it which I was hoping to hear on the rest of the album. Unfortunately, I only liked the first track and found the rest to be a bit of a disappointment. Seems like "Paralyzer" should have been done by Disturbed. The only reason I gave the album a 2 was because it has one song I can't get enough of. Otherwise, it's a zero. Generic and poor lyrics = radio friendly. Not what I'm looking for.

5 out of 5 stars It's Awesome.......2007-06-02

I got into Finger Eleven for their track 'One Thing'. That was a really good song, excellently composed but it did not make a serious fan out of me. That is until the new album 'Them-Vs-You-Vs-Me'.

I find Soctt Andersons vocals consistent throughout the entire album. Yes it is more alternative rock but don't be put off by being classified as a label when it comes to what you listen to. This is a very enjoyable cd.
The tracks, Paraylzed, Falling On, and Taking To The Walls are outstanding in terms of more of the rocking type tracks.

However, this is only a treat before we get some real amazing vocals on some of the more acoustic type tracks.
Real bonus to the CD are the following:

* I'll Keep Your Memory Vague. 5/5
"This won't break your heart, But I just think it could, coz I haven't tried as hard as I should..to..to seperate you from everything I do...but I would never wanna come between us 2" - This entire line is the best vocal I've heard this year for an intro.

* Window Song 5/5
"All The Windows are playing their game...we won't see outisde again...til I ride all the fog away...I'm putting words in their place...but all of the fog is erased & I write all the words I never said"

* Talking To The Walls
-Excellent Intro & again great lyrics. i.e. "Look at the shape I'm in, talking to the walls again'

They have staying power, for the people that have mocked this album, it's been unfair, bands need to evolve.

I would definitely like to extend my gratitude of thanks to Finger Eleven, they put out an album I can really relate to.

Come tour in Auckland, NZ some time.

4 out of 5 stars Very solid album.......2006-05-07

This album is definitely slower and more radio-friendly than Greyest of Blue Skies but by no means is it an inferior product, nor is it derivative or bland. They haven't sold out to create this sound, the guitars are at the standard and creativity we've come to expect and in particular the first five tracks are very enjoyable. The only reason I gave this album 4 stars is that the last half of the album drags somewhat.

5 out of 5 stars I want more!!!.......2006-02-22

I'm a long time fan of the band and this CD did not dissapoint! Some argue that "One Thing" is the best song here but it grows tiresome to me and sounds too much like a Beetles B-side...the real gem here is "THOUSAND MILE WISH" which is just perfectly pieced together. I admitt that I was taken aback by the inclution of aucustic tracks here...I was not expecting this at all, but I was pleased that a band with such an aray of talent was able to bring something new to the table. I still feel that the best way to really appreciate this band is to see them live...I've seen them 3 times now and will again as soon as possible. From start to finish this CD is amazing...Songs like "OTHER LIGHT" and "STAY IN SHADOW" showcase the side we've all seen, songs appearing on TGoBS album. "ABSENT ELEMENTS" and "COMPLICATED QUESTION" have the general F11 vibe to them, much like their contemperary singles off their debut album Tip. "GOOD TIMES", the first single, has a feel reminisent of "DRAG YOU DOWN" while "LAST SCENE OF STRUGGLING" is sure to excite. "THERAPY" has a much different sound to it and can't be classified. It's decent, not my favorite, but warents a listen. My favorite track aside from the brilliant "THOUSAND MILE WISH" is the stunning closer "OBVIOUS HEART"...the chorus is just so titilating it will be in your head for days. I love this band, they are a solid brilliant band that stands the tests of time and continue to turn out masterpiece after masterpiece...I just wish more people took notice!

5 out of 5 stars Keep it coming!.......2005-12-10

Great CD hands down. I've been a huge fan of Finger Eleven for years now and each album they release has a welcomed twist on the previous. Let me warn you though as previous reviewers have discovered: 'One thing' is not a typical Finger Eleven recording. It's a great song, but the category 'Hard Rock/Alternative' means just that (do some research!). 'Thousand Mile Wish' is another one of these irregularities regarding Finger Eleven's usual style (despite its dark nature). The rest of the CD is the complement of these two songs and a good representation of the previous work from the band - their heavier side. 'Other Light', 'Obvious Heart', and 'Therapy' are my personal favorites. Collectively it's a well rounded CD with varying intensities and sounds. I respect the band for branching into different styles to see what works for them (as serious artists do), and in this case it payed off. Great work, 5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars One Thing sucks, get over it already.......2005-09-27

that's about all i have to say. i knew that song wasn't that great before it ever hit the radio, and then radio just killed it. and then when the much better Thousand-Mile Wish came out, everyone said "Oh, it sounds too much like One Thing". this is one reason why i don't listen to the radio anymore.

overall the album is decent. a lot of the harder songs on the album are too slow to get into (despite the very well-written lyrics of scott anderson), and the straight-ahead approach just doesn't seem to work for these guys. much like how the straight-ahead approach nearly killed the new nine inch nails record.

another example of even the best of rock music getting worse. it's an alright buy, but greyest of blue skies and tip are the better buys.

oh, and don't listen to the rainbow butt monkeys. just let that phase rot in it's grave where it belongs.

1 out of 5 stars Should have read reviews before I bought.......2005-09-21

If you are considering buying this album because you like the song "One thing" - don't! The other songs on this album are very hard rock/metal. "One thing" does not represent the type of music this band plays at all. If you like hard rock/metal (which I do) you may enjoy this album. I personally find the songs monotinous. They all sound the same to me (with the exception of "One thing", of course.)

The pop song-score is often accused of being little more than ancillary merchandising for many a film and the supporting evidence is often hard to deny. But this well-chosen collection of modern rock and metal for director Jonathan Hensleigh's adaptation of the vengeance-obsessed Marvel Comics anti-hero is a gratifying exception; apt sonic seasoning for the film's bleak, contemporary edge. The thrash of Hatebreed, Chevelle, and the new Drowning Pool lineup and tracks by more established acts like Puddle of Mudd, Nickelback, and Queens of the Stone Age (who turn in a smart, chunky cover of Romeo Void's Rock-of-the-80's staple, "Never Say Never") alone would make it a welcome rock-metal sampler. But its 19 tracks also encompass an intriguing range of lesser known bands and one-off collaborations (Seether and Amy Lee, Jerry Cantrell and Damageplan, Ben Moody/Jason Miller/Jason "Gong" Jones); all bristling with a dark, moody energy that perfectly echos the film's dour, relentlessly violent tone. -- Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars An Instant Classic Compilation.......2006-02-19

Anyone questioning whether or not to add this album to their collection need only look at the back of the case. With a role call that boasts an enormous amount of talent, this album delivers hard hitting rock and insightful lyrics that give it depth. It is rare to find an album that not only has great music for a listener who wants some music and also lyrics for those who enjoy looking a little deeper into their music. From Hatebreed to Smile Empty Soul, this CD covers all ranges of emotion and never disappoints!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Punisher Sound.......2005-12-07

The songs on this album are just the type of music you think of when you think "The Punisher". Even if you haven't seen the movie, but love the sound of rock, this is one of the best albums you can get that comes with a nice variety of artists. If you are a fan of The Punisher movie and or comics, this is definitely a can't miss soundtrack. As is the Original Score to the film...

5 out of 5 stars Powerful music!.......2005-09-20

I was actually more attracted to The Punisher by the music coming from the soundtrack than the actual movie. In fact, I was a little disappointed that the music wasn't more prominently featured in the movie.

The bands and the songs selected for the soundtrack are all so energizing and powerful. I could hardly believe that the collection was so good - not a weak song in the bunch. Give it a listen, and you'll be smiling and rockin' too!

3 out of 5 stars measuring up (now 4 stars instead of 3...).......2005-08-26

Technically, this isn't my second review of the product; it's just me taking my original review and completely rewriting it. Quite frankly, as time went on and I heard other Marvel-based movie soundtracks, I started to realize just how good The Punisher's soundtrack is. With the ultimate combination of rock and... more rock, Punisher contends for best soundtrack I've ever heard. A few of the standout tracks for me (not in order of how much I like them, but in how they appear [for the most part] on the CD) are:

Drowning Pool- Step Up: Now, if you've read my review of Desensitized, by Drowning Pool (the album this song came off of), you would have heard me mention that I love this song, but it just isn't really Drowning Pool due to the lack of Dave Williams in the song. I stand by that thought, although I do still really like this song.

Nickelback- Slow Motion: I'm pretty well impressed with this particular song, but not as much as I am with some of the other songs on this soundtrack. It's got its merits, though, mainly cause it's Nickelback...

Seether (feat. Amy Lee)- Broken: Damned if I can't label this the best damn song on here. With Seether and frontman Shaun Morgan's ex-girlfriend Amy Lee (of Evanescence fame) as the backing vocalist, this song is both hard-hitting and haunting at the same time. If you've heard this particular song, you know what I mean.

Smile Empty Soul- Finding Myself: I also call this one "Smile Empty Soul Goes Acoustic"- and amazingly enough, alternative rock band Smile Empty Soul's first all-acoustic song works like a charm and is one of my favorites.

Trapt- Lost in a Portrait: In my opinion, Lost in a Portrait isn't as good as some of Trapt's other songs, but it's still a good one and a good pick for the soundtrack; I believe this one was recorded specifically for the soundtrack, as I couldn't find this one on either Trapt or Someone in Control...

Seether- Sold Me: Seether's second contribution to the compilation; like Broken, this one comes from Seether's (semi)second CD, Disclaimer II, a reworking of their debut cut Disclaimer. This one is much more hard-edged than Broken, but not necessarily better... it is good though.

Edgewater- Eyes Wired Shut: Tied with Broken for the best song on here. I love how Edgewater so succintly draws you in with the first hook of the chorus- "Eyes wired shut, running through my brain..." Awesome song, guys.

Hatebreed- Bound to Violence: A bit more heavy metal-ish than I'm used to, but I got used to this and actually started to like it. Hatebreed (and more particularly, this song) is what got me listening to bands like Lamb of God and Chimaira, so thanks.

Mark Collie- In Time: By far the most haunting songs on the soundtrack and one of my favorites. Go Mark!!!

Most people would expect me to end this with some kind of witty saying to aid you in making your decision to further research this product- but I'm just too damn tired. So here it goes: The Punisher is frankly one of the best movie soundtracks out there, so go check it out- you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Mass Attraction.......2005-07-07

I too, was pleasantly surprised by the lesser-known alterna-hard-rock acts on this disc (Trapt, Finger Eleven, Submersed). Along with Span's 2004 2CD masterpiece "Mass Distraction," this is one of the best guitar-driven experiences of the last year-AND that's saying something for a soundtrack to a movie!

5 out of 5 stars The bluest skies you'll find.......2006-02-11

I've been a fan of Finger Eleven since I heard 'Tip' and I have to say that this is there finest album to date. I love 'Tip' as well as there latest self titled release but it's this album that really made me a fan. With the opening track "THE FIRST TIME" Finger Eleven show you they are here to stay, with Scotts haunting vocals and Rick and James burning up the guitars they present a smashing opener to their gloomiest yet most refreshing album yet. The second track "DRAG YOU DOWN" shows their heavy KoRn influence (I'm not saying they sound like KoRn but in interview Scott said that they were listening to a lot of KoRn during the recording of this album and it shows here)...I'm impressed with Rich's drumming here. "MY CAROUSEL" is the strangest song here and honestly I was not a fan upon the first listen through. The great thing about this album is that each song brings something different to the table and so when you look at it that way this is not too bad of a song selection. "SICK OF IT ALL" is a sad depressing look at drug addiction and it really shines on this album as one of the best here. The lyrics are haunting as is the riffs and the multiple voices over the bridge. "FOR THE OCEAN" was the second single and one of the more commercial songs on the album. "BROKEN WORDS" is softer and more delicate than any of the other songs here and it sounds almost like it could break at any minute...I know that may sound weird, but when you listen you'll understand. "SUFFOCATE" is a great track, very different with neat guitar work here by James. "BONES + JOINTS" as well as the Depeche Mode cover "WALKING IN MY SHOES" have a much different vibe to them and somewhat leave me a little wanting...they just don't satisfy me as so if I skip any tracks, these would be them. "FAMOUS" is just brilliant. Lyrically speacking of the downfalls to fame they shed a light on the fact that we are all human. Beautiful. This brings us to the most amazing Finger Eleven song to date, there closer "STAY AND DROWN" which is the most titilating beautiful love song, anti-love song, I have ever heard. With lyrics that cut to the soul of you I'm sure you will agree this is the best possible way to close this amazing piece of art!

5 out of 5 stars F11's best to date.......2005-10-12

This album is without a doubt Finger Eleven's best studio album. I am a pretty hardcore fan of their's. I own all 3 albums, plus their album before they were called F11. And after all that music, I feel this album is their best work.

First off the album carries a feel and story that the other CDs just don't offer as well. The title, Greyest of Blue Skies, holds up well here as the album is very dark and depressing if you take the time to decypher some of the cryptic lyrics. I say cryptic because F11 has some pretty out of place lyrics at time. But its all good because the music is always good.

Its hard to pick standout tracks because honestly this is some of the best rock you'll ever hear. Do yourself a favor and get this album.

4 out of 5 stars A first time listener to Finger Eleven.......2005-06-29

This is a band I didn't know at all until purchasing this album 'The Greyest of Blue Skies' through Amazon.com whilst I was look for Filter CD's. This is a rock group undoubtedly however the band has their dark moods which is interspersed within the songs of this album release. Although this CD is quite listenable and actually after 2 or 3 times in your CD player gets enjoyable. I believe this is the band's sophmore release from 2000 and I am in the process of getting their other 2 albums. 'Finger Eleven' is a Canadian band with their own unique rock sound that fuses dark melodies with intense lyrics that are somewhat mysterious. The 11 songs on this CD are listenable and each follows on the other in a somewhat natural progression. 'Drag You Down' and 'Suffocate' are the heavier songs on this CD and my songs I most enjoyed were 'For The Ocean', 'Broken Words' and 'Bones + Joints'. Fans of nu-rock and alt rock bands should enjoy this sample from Finger Eleven.

5 out of 5 stars Deceptively complex.......2005-06-24

I heard the single "First Time" on an audio-only satellite tv channel in South Africa in 2001. Much to our disappointment, music like this gets extremely little airtime on local radio these days; as a result, the album was not easy to find and I had to eventually ask a local retailer to import a copy for me. But that's another (long) story for another time.

Anyway, after much arguing and abusive emails back and forth, I moved to another retailer who supplied the necessary (and offered me a job, no less!) in about 2 days. I had downloaded First Time and Suffocate from the internet before purchasing; apart from these two tracks, though, I had no idea what to expect from the remainder of the album.

It is... unique. I can't think of another word to describe it adequately. The songs all move really well; there is a fairly good mix of fast and slow material (all pretty heavy, though; even the ballads are quite dirgy) and the imagery employed throughout is captivating. What really gets me, though, is the *sound* of the album. I can't quite explain it.

There are guitars and bass and drums; that's a given, because this ia rock band. But the way it's all put together... strange sounds emanate throughout the album, linking the tracks with a kind of high-pitched siren-like flanger/phaser effect (if you have ever played with a guitar flange-effect pedal, you will know what I mean right away) and the rest of the music seems to float in from nowhere. This is very vague, I know. My point is, it's difficult to imagine exactly how the sounds are made. If you were to pick up a guitar, you'd struggle to figure out the chords to a lot of the songs on the album, let alone actually trying to mimic the sounds you heard. But at the same time, it doesn't sound hugely sampled or over-processed like a Nine Inch Nails track might, and it's not nu-metal/DJ-based sampling like Linkin Park, because there is no DJ. The guitars soar and wail and buzz, when you can make them out, and the bass sits in a bit of a holding pattern, just really thumping out a solid groove. But its the other little bits which really make it.

Having said all that, there is simultaneously a massive wall of sound and a very minimalist approach to the thing. While I can't quite figure it all out - and I got this in August 2001 - I listen to it a hell of a lot. It's a really great album.

3 out of 5 stars Deep And Dark.......2005-04-03

The album start off with "First Time" a great song with an awesome and catchy beat to it. The second song "Drag You Down" is in my books the heaviest song soundwise on the record, followed by "Suffocate". A very deep and dark album, with a mysterious side to it. If you have a dark side with a mysterious side, pick up this album, you two will get along perfectly. Scott's lyrics are very dark and mysterious. A lot of his words makes me wonder. A lot of people may not know exactly what he's talking about, but that's the cool side of it, it makes you wonder. It's all up to your imagination as to what most of the lyrics are about.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Foundation.......2006-08-01

While it was Finger Eleven's third album that broke through in the US, it's still their debut album, 'Tip,' that I keep in my CD player. Many bands take some time to establish their own sound, but Finger Eleven proves with this album that they stand apart from the rest. 'Tip' still sounds new and innovative today, with hard hitting songs like 'Tip' and 'Condenser', to the hypnotic melodies of 'Costume For A Gutterball' and 'Temporary Arms.' I'd recommend this CD any day of the week.

5 out of 5 stars Goes down easy..........2006-02-14

I've been a fan of this band forever it seems like and each and everyone of their releases has resonated high with me...this being their debut has special importance because it marked the beginnning of their amazing career. Although they are not that well known they really have had influence on a lot of more popular bands around now, that you can see when you give a listen to this very different, very brilliant album. From the opening of "QUICKSAND" to the amazingly haunting closer "SWALLOWTAIL" you are drawn into this bands magnificence and truly come to see this band for what they are...a force to be taken seriously! "QUICKSAND" & "ABOVE" serve as you more radio friendly type songs, catchy and contemperary. The title track "TIP" is slightly heavier and is really one to get you pumped...great moshpit song. The next two tracks are close to my favorites, "SHUDDER" & "AWAKE AND DREAMING". "SHUDDER" uses the harmonics perfectly, adding this haunting vibe to the song. Scotts voice is infectious...soft and delicate one minute and then coarse and strained the next. "AWAKE AND DREAMING" shows the beautiful side of this band. With melody in the guitars and soft sincere lyrics that are perfectly dispatched by Scotts soothing voice. The chorus is just so serene. "CONDESER" kinda sounds like Manson's 'Beautiful People' at least the chorus. Shows a different side to this band. It's just great to see how diverse one band can be. Personally, if you listen to all three of their CD's back to back you won't get bored because nothing sounds the same...anyways. "THIN SPIRITS" has a great vibe to it, the beat is perfect and just draws you in. "Theres no way, theres no way out..." "GLIMSE" has some cool guitar work and cool effects on the voice, but all in all it doesn't touch me like some of the other songs. "COSTUME FOR A GUTTER BALL" is great. I love the bass lines. The lyrics are great and meaningful. "TEMPERARY ARMS" is one of the best songs here if not for the song as a whole, for the lyrics which are just great. I'm a stickler for the lyrics of a song. I don't like songs that use the same contemperary lyrics that every band recycles over and over again, but one of the great things about Finger Eleven is that you will only hear it here...no where else. This brings us to my favorite song here, the epic closer "SWALLOWTAIL" which is the most beautiful song, lyrically and instumentally I've ever heard. Scott is so soothing yet so vulnerable here, you can feel his emotions...you just want to comfort him while you lay with your eyes closed and soak up the beauty that is this song. Perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Finger Eleven at their Best.......2005-12-23

every track on this album is awesome. quicksand, awake and dreaming, glimpse, costume for a gutterball, and swallowtail are my personal favorite. finger eleven can dish out heavy rock (glimpse, costume for a gutterball) or slow it down a bit (awake and dreaming, swallowtail). i would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys listening to music. 6 STARS!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A Brave Debut.......2005-09-26

Finger Eleven are one of those great bands who have made a career out of sounding nothing like anyone else and avoiding trends. Their debut album, "Tip," was hardly keeping with the times. In 1998, they didn't sound like rap-metal, nor did they fit in with typical alternative radio. I hear a lot of things on this album that have been copied by a lot of bands to follow, which makes Finger Eleven one of the most underrated groups of the past decade. They've obviously had a bit of influence, even though hardly anyone knows their name.

"Tip," while not being as dark as the ultimately superior "The Greyest Of Blues Skies" or as sharp and catchy as their 2003 self titled album, still sticks out for me. As a debut, Finger Eleven sure got their feet on the ground rather quick, establishing a sound all their own. Fans working backwards through the groups catalogue may find this album a little harder to swallow, because it's not an instant click. You must listen to this album a few times before you get it. There are songs, though, that definitely catch you from the beginning. "Quicksand" and "Above," two of the best known songs from this effort are great examples of this, and "Awake And Dreaming" remains one of my favorite Finger Eleven songs, also a sign of what their second album would sound like. But hands down, the best song the group has ever written, in my opinion, is the title track "Tip." This song is so addictive. My first listen to this song nearly unhinged my jaw. If this song doesn't get you going, you just might be dead!

Finger Eleven have come a long way from this album, and admittedly have made better music (although a lot of fans will strongly disagree with me), but "Tip" still stands as a stellar debut effort. Few bands find their sound this quick, and coming from a band who used to go by the moniker, Rainbow Butt Monkeys, it's rather impressive. "Tip" is just an album that all fans of rock music can appreciate. From the heavy stuff to the more tender side, it's got it all.

5 out of 5 stars In my opinion: The GREATEST Hard Rock Album EVER.......2005-09-12

Not a dull moment. Starts of rocking with Quicksand and ends smoothly with Swallowtail. Favorite songs on album are Quicksand, Awake and Dreaming, Thin Spirits, Glimpse, and Costume for a Gutterball. So much better than the Rainbow Butt Monkeys and Finger Eleven's latest self-titled album. Overall the GREATEST Hard Rock Album EVER!

This Jennifer Garner-starring film version Marvel Comics' martial arts expert/assassin-as-superhero never quite found its focus as successful big-screen adaptation. But its modern-rock song-score "Album" (Christophe Beck's more traditional orchestral score is also available) has no such obstacle, gathering together new recordings that punctuate the film's milieu with often forceful effectiveness. Jet keeps things lively with "Hey Kids," another rollicking dose of snotty retro-pop from the Aussie newcomers, while "Breathe No More" by Evanescence (previously only available as a live cut) is essentially a solo showcase for the emotive moodiness of singer Amy Lee's dusky voice, yet one that finds ample resonance with the film's title character. A shadowy remix of Finger Eleven's "Thousand Mile Wish," Taking Back Sunday's new "Your Own Disaster" and Strata's "Never There" mine a similarly introspective vein, contrasting well with more lively cuts like The Donnas' "Everything Is Wrong" and NYC's Twenty-Twos giving Veruca Salt's "5 Years" a nervy kick. --Jerry McCulley

The album is ok but I really only bought it to get the Evanescence song on it, which is fantstic :)

5 out of 5 stars Great cd.......2007-02-25

This cd is really good. It has a lot of good rock songs. Even if you don't like ELEKTRA you will like this cd if you like rock music.

4 out of 5 stars eh..........2006-10-08

I'm not really sure what to say about this compilation. For starters, I really did enjoy the addition of new songs by SpiderMan II-famous Jet, Evanescence with their previously live-only track Breathe No More, Strata, and a few more artists. Then we have Megan McCauley, who I think so deserves at least an MTV Music Award for this song. Yet, despite these praises, it really wasn't as good as I thought it was. It might be me just comparing it to the Daredevil soundtrack (as Elektra is the cohort to Daredevil)... or maybe I'm comparing one Evanescence song on this CD to two on Daredevil ("Bring Me to Life" and "My Immortal"). Not sure. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's not the worst CD out there... not by far. In fact, I really liked it. I just didn't like it enough to give it a full 5 stars. Maybe if they put stuff like "Before I Forget" or "Duality" by Slipknot or "Numb" or even "Frgt:10" by Linkin Park (the latter from Reanimation), I could have given it a higher rating. Don't let this scare you away from getting this, though. It's an awesome CD; it's also not the best in the world... but then again, what is?

3 out of 5 stars It's decent.......2006-06-11

The songs on the soundtrack are either really good or really bad. The ones I think that are really good (and the reasons why I bought the soundtrack) are Tracks 6, 9, 12, and 15.
The rest of the songs aren't that good.
So basically the movie is better than the album. (Elektra receives 4 stars from me.)
If you like this soundtrack you will like the Daredevil Soundtrack.

You Vs. Me, Finger Eleven have consciously stayed away from anything remotely resembling "One Thing" and put the focus on the straight-ahead alt-rock formula that they've consistently excelled at.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not the Finger Eleven I used to know.......2007-03-07

This album is a very large departure from the band that made "The Greyest of Blue Skies" and "Tip", two really good hard rock albums. After their last self titled album, the very polished and good mix of pop and power that they had has been all washed away, and we are left with a sugary sounding album "Them VS You VS ME". Unfortunately, this album will loose a lot of their previous fans, but pick up a lot of young and more "new rock" fans. Paralyzer is about the best and most logical first single from this album, because it is about the only one I can halfway like. Falling on is not a bad track either, but then this album just looses itself in monotany. It burns itself out after about 4 tracks (Track 4 "Lost My Way" says it all. and sounds a lot like Paralyzer). It sounds like are struggling to finde another "One Thing" (which I'm still amazed that did that well, since thier were better songs on the last album). Finger eleven needs to go back and start finding tracks like "First Time", "Suffocate", and "Quicksand", songs that hooked me into following these guys. Even their Rainbow Butt Monkeys stuff was more distinguishable than this.

Overall, this is a reasonable album, and I will likely grow to like it more the longer I listen to it, but it is not one of the "instant classics" albums. Pick this up for a reasonable sale price if you must.
