In the almost two and a half years it took to make their third album, Canadian rage rockers Finger Eleven have undergone a radical transition. Gone are the overwrought guitars, gratuitous venting, and nu-metal posturing that marked their early work. In their place are some tightly constructed melodies and emotionally articulate lyrics weaved into a coherent song cycle that documents the disintegration of a relationship. This isn't to say the one-time headbangers have gone soft because they're writing love songs and featuring gorgeous acoustic guitar work. There are some bonecrushers among the 11 songs here, but the sturdy rockers are less prosaic than the band's earlier efforts, and it's clear that they have paid more attention to song structure and dynamics, although Scott Anderson's staccato delivery can give you whiplash. --Jaan Uhelszki

Finger Eleven's career shifted suddenly and significantly when their 2003 emo-hit "One Thing" turned the band's career on its axis. At that point, they went from being known as 'the boys from Burlington who used to call themselves the Rainbow Butt Monkeys' to a group whose anthemic slow rock song went Platinum in Canada and Gold in America. So how does a band respond after its widespread fame is the result of just one song? In the case of Them Vs. You Vs. Me, Finger Eleven have consciously stayed away from anything remotely resembling their past and put the focus on the straight-ahead alt-rock formula that they've consistently excelled at. There are certain old-school rock influences that bleed clearly through their music, from Rush-isms in the form of frenetic time changes ("Sense of a Spark") to "Talking to the Walls" and "Lost My Way" which evoke Peter Gabriel-era Genesis. Frontman Scott Anderson's voice is impressive throughout, but when he sings ballads, especially "Window Song" and "Easy Life," something enables him to appeal to a whole different audience than traditional alt-rock fans. There is no 'one thing' on this disc that will allow them to reach the heights of their self-titled CD, just a consistency that will provide longtime fans reason to appreciate the band even more. --Denise SheppardCustomer Reviews:

What a great new concept album!.......2007-07-08
I listened again today driving from Philly to DC and really paid attention. Aside from the myriad classic rock influences that can be heard and the solid musicianship, this disc is quite the concept album. Best one I've heard in a long time and I'm very, very rarely impressed by new musical offerings. I understand that this may not be the same sound as their previous offerings but I really don't care. This is good music.
5 stars!
No more paralyzers?.......2007-07-08
It's Awesome.......2007-06-02
I find Soctt Andersons vocals consistent throughout the entire album. Yes it is more alternative rock but don't be put off by being classified as a label when it comes to what you listen to. This is a very enjoyable cd.
The tracks, Paraylzed, Falling On, and Taking To The Walls are outstanding in terms of more of the rocking type tracks.
However, this is only a treat before we get some real amazing vocals on some of the more acoustic type tracks.
Real bonus to the CD are the following:
* I'll Keep Your Memory Vague. 5/5
"This won't break your heart, But I just think it could, coz I haven't tried as hard as I should..to..to seperate you from everything I do...but I would never wanna come between us 2" - This entire line is the best vocal I've heard this year for an intro.
* Window Song 5/5
"All The Windows are playing their game...we won't see outisde again...til I ride all the fog away...I'm putting words in their place...but all of the fog is erased & I write all the words I never said"
* Talking To The Walls
-Excellent Intro & again great lyrics. i.e. "Look at the shape I'm in, talking to the walls again'
They have staying power, for the people that have mocked this album, it's been unfair, bands need to evolve.
I would definitely like to extend my gratitude of thanks to Finger Eleven, they put out an album I can really relate to.
Come tour in Auckland, NZ some time.

overall the album is decent. a lot of the harder songs on the album are too slow to get into (despite the very well-written lyrics of scott anderson), and the straight-ahead approach just doesn't seem to work for these guys. much like how the straight-ahead approach nearly killed the new nine inch nails record.
another example of even the best of rock music getting worse. it's an alright buy, but greyest of blue skies and tip are the better buys.
oh, and don't listen to the rainbow butt monkeys. just let that phase rot in it's grave where it belongs.

The pop song-score is often accused of being little more than ancillary merchandising for many a film and the supporting evidence is often hard to deny. But this well-chosen collection of modern rock and metal for director Jonathan Hensleigh's adaptation of the vengeance-obsessed Marvel Comics anti-hero is a gratifying exception; apt sonic seasoning for the film's bleak, contemporary edge. The thrash of Hatebreed, Chevelle, and the new Drowning Pool lineup and tracks by more established acts like Puddle of Mudd, Nickelback, and Queens of the Stone Age (who turn in a smart, chunky cover of Romeo Void's Rock-of-the-80's staple, "Never Say Never") alone would make it a welcome rock-metal sampler. But its 19 tracks also encompass an intriguing range of lesser known bands and one-off collaborations (Seether and Amy Lee, Jerry Cantrell and Damageplan, Ben Moody/Jason Miller/Jason "Gong" Jones); all bristling with a dark, moody energy that perfectly echos the film's dour, relentlessly violent tone. -- Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

measuring up (now 4 stars instead of 3...).......2005-08-26
Drowning Pool- Step Up: Now, if you've read my review of Desensitized, by Drowning Pool (the album this song came off of), you would have heard me mention that I love this song, but it just isn't really Drowning Pool due to the lack of Dave Williams in the song. I stand by that thought, although I do still really like this song.
Nickelback- Slow Motion: I'm pretty well impressed with this particular song, but not as much as I am with some of the other songs on this soundtrack. It's got its merits, though, mainly cause it's Nickelback...
Seether (feat. Amy Lee)- Broken: Damned if I can't label this the best damn song on here. With Seether and frontman Shaun Morgan's ex-girlfriend Amy Lee (of Evanescence fame) as the backing vocalist, this song is both hard-hitting and haunting at the same time. If you've heard this particular song, you know what I mean.
Smile Empty Soul- Finding Myself: I also call this one "Smile Empty Soul Goes Acoustic"- and amazingly enough, alternative rock band Smile Empty Soul's first all-acoustic song works like a charm and is one of my favorites.
Trapt- Lost in a Portrait: In my opinion, Lost in a Portrait isn't as good as some of Trapt's other songs, but it's still a good one and a good pick for the soundtrack; I believe this one was recorded specifically for the soundtrack, as I couldn't find this one on either Trapt or Someone in Control...
Seether- Sold Me: Seether's second contribution to the compilation; like Broken, this one comes from Seether's (semi)second CD, Disclaimer II, a reworking of their debut cut Disclaimer. This one is much more hard-edged than Broken, but not necessarily better... it is good though.
Edgewater- Eyes Wired Shut: Tied with Broken for the best song on here. I love how Edgewater so succintly draws you in with the first hook of the chorus- "Eyes wired shut, running through my brain..." Awesome song, guys.
Hatebreed- Bound to Violence: A bit more heavy metal-ish than I'm used to, but I got used to this and actually started to like it. Hatebreed (and more particularly, this song) is what got me listening to bands like Lamb of God and Chimaira, so thanks.
Mark Collie- In Time: By far the most haunting songs on the soundtrack and one of my favorites. Go Mark!!!
Most people would expect me to end this with some kind of witty saying to aid you in making your decision to further research this product- but I'm just too damn tired. So here it goes: The Punisher is frankly one of the best movie soundtracks out there, so go check it out- you won't be disappointed.

The bluest skies you'll find.......2006-02-11
F11's best to date.......2005-10-12
First off the album carries a feel and story that the other CDs just don't offer as well. The title, Greyest of Blue Skies, holds up well here as the album is very dark and depressing if you take the time to decypher some of the cryptic lyrics. I say cryptic because F11 has some pretty out of place lyrics at time. But its all good because the music is always good.
Its hard to pick standout tracks because honestly this is some of the best rock you'll ever hear. Do yourself a favor and get this album.
A first time listener to Finger Eleven.......2005-06-29
Deceptively complex.......2005-06-24
Anyway, after much arguing and abusive emails back and forth, I moved to another retailer who supplied the necessary (and offered me a job, no less!) in about 2 days. I had downloaded First Time and Suffocate from the internet before purchasing; apart from these two tracks, though, I had no idea what to expect from the remainder of the album.
It is... unique. I can't think of another word to describe it adequately. The songs all move really well; there is a fairly good mix of fast and slow material (all pretty heavy, though; even the ballads are quite dirgy) and the imagery employed throughout is captivating. What really gets me, though, is the *sound* of the album. I can't quite explain it.
There are guitars and bass and drums; that's a given, because this ia rock band. But the way it's all put together... strange sounds emanate throughout the album, linking the tracks with a kind of high-pitched siren-like flanger/phaser effect (if you have ever played with a guitar flange-effect pedal, you will know what I mean right away) and the rest of the music seems to float in from nowhere. This is very vague, I know. My point is, it's difficult to imagine exactly how the sounds are made. If you were to pick up a guitar, you'd struggle to figure out the chords to a lot of the songs on the album, let alone actually trying to mimic the sounds you heard. But at the same time, it doesn't sound hugely sampled or over-processed like a Nine Inch Nails track might, and it's not nu-metal/DJ-based sampling like Linkin Park, because there is no DJ. The guitars soar and wail and buzz, when you can make them out, and the bass sits in a bit of a holding pattern, just really thumping out a solid groove. But its the other little bits which really make it.
Having said all that, there is simultaneously a massive wall of sound and a very minimalist approach to the thing. While I can't quite figure it all out - and I got this in August 2001 - I listen to it a hell of a lot. It's a really great album.

A Brave Debut.......2005-09-26
"Tip," while not being as dark as the ultimately superior "The Greyest Of Blues Skies" or as sharp and catchy as their 2003 self titled album, still sticks out for me. As a debut, Finger Eleven sure got their feet on the ground rather quick, establishing a sound all their own. Fans working backwards through the groups catalogue may find this album a little harder to swallow, because it's not an instant click. You must listen to this album a few times before you get it. There are songs, though, that definitely catch you from the beginning. "Quicksand" and "Above," two of the best known songs from this effort are great examples of this, and "Awake And Dreaming" remains one of my favorite Finger Eleven songs, also a sign of what their second album would sound like. But hands down, the best song the group has ever written, in my opinion, is the title track "Tip." This song is so addictive. My first listen to this song nearly unhinged my jaw. If this song doesn't get you going, you just might be dead!
Finger Eleven have come a long way from this album, and admittedly have made better music (although a lot of fans will strongly disagree with me), but "Tip" still stands as a stellar debut effort. Few bands find their sound this quick, and coming from a band who used to go by the moniker, Rainbow Butt Monkeys, it's rather impressive. "Tip" is just an album that all fans of rock music can appreciate. From the heavy stuff to the more tender side, it's got it all.
In my opinion: The GREATEST Hard Rock Album EVER.......2005-09-12

This Jennifer Garner-starring film version Marvel Comics' martial arts expert/assassin-as-superhero never quite found its focus as successful big-screen adaptation. But its modern-rock song-score "Album" (Christophe Beck's more traditional orchestral score is also available) has no such obstacle, gathering together new recordings that punctuate the film's milieu with often forceful effectiveness. Jet keeps things lively with "Hey Kids," another rollicking dose of snotty retro-pop from the Aussie newcomers, while "Breathe No More" by Evanescence (previously only available as a live cut) is essentially a solo showcase for the emotive moodiness of singer Amy Lee's dusky voice, yet one that finds ample resonance with the film's title character. A shadowy remix of Finger Eleven's "Thousand Mile Wish," Taking Back Sunday's new "Your Own Disaster" and Strata's "Never There" mine a similarly introspective vein, contrasting well with more lively cuts like The Donnas' "Everything Is Wrong" and NYC's Twenty-Twos giving Veruca Salt's "5 Years" a nervy kick. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
