When Jimmy Buffett recorded this, his major-label debut, he was neither a country artist nor a Los Angeles-style folk rocker, and he hadn't yet happened upon the beach-bum persona that has sustained him through the last quarter century of his career. Yet White Sport Coat contains forays in all these directions. It features some of his most enduring songs, such as the sweet, sentimental "He Went to Paris," "I Have Found Me a Home," and the outrageous "Why Don't We Get Drunk (and Screw)." There's a pleasant island breeze blowing on "Cuban Crime of Passion," while "The Great Filling Station Holdup" and "Peanut Butter Conspiracy" offer early evidence of Buffett's humorous storytelling abilities. It's a compelling, unpretentious disc and one of Buffett's best. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars An old favorite back on the playlist.......2007-02-22

This is my favorite Jimmy Buffet album of all time (Changes in Attitudes is a close second), and I'm glad I finally got a CD to replace the vinal. But ya know, I actually kinda miss the pops and scratches from the old record. It almost doesn't sound right without them. But I'm going to enjoy getting used to the nice clean sound!

5 out of 5 stars Jimmy Buffet- good stuff.......2007-01-10

I bought this cd for the song about the peanut butter robbery.. it's all good, it's Buffet!

5 out of 5 stars Spinning Yarns.......2006-09-02

I challenge you to name a singer/songwriter who tells stories comparable to this guy's. Carmen, Billy Voltaire, the Railroad Lady, Spooner, and Merrita, to name a few, are so rich in character. The songs really transport you to Havana, Miami, and the Keys; the songwriting has such depth!

5 out of 5 stars One of his best.......2006-03-07

Jimmy had made some 20+ albums but this one has always remained one of my favorites. It isn't over produced, the lyrics are understated and each song is distinct and can live on its own. This album more than any other reminds me of growing up on a Florida beach with too many goodtimes and not realizing when things were bad.

5 out of 5 stars One of Jimmy's Best.......2005-10-01

This was Jimmy's first big album and it does not dissappoint. With several of his biggests hits on this CD it is sure to be enjoyed by both the die-hard parrotheads and the listener just getting into Jimmy's work. A must own for any music fan.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for Parrot Heads.......2000-01-22

Okay, okay this isn't Jimmy's first album, but it is often considered his first, and it is an album that should be bought, if for no other reason than it has three songs that are the definitive songs of their genre.

This is where most people will tell you about "He Went To Paris", "Death of an Unpopular Poet", and "Cuban Crime of Passion" While these are probably some of the best ballads Buffett ever wrote, I'd rather point out three other excellent songs.

Great Filling Station Holdup is the definitve going to jail song. Buffett has taken all the songs such and Folsum Prison Blues, and every other been in jail, bad guy songs and tore them apart with this simple parody which pokes fun at all of those singers who make being an ex-con such an important part of their life.

The Great Peanut Butter Conspiracy is yet another song which destroys the whole "desparado attitude" in so many songs, reducing the bad guy singer to simple pick-pocket. Both songs are a work of pure genius.

Of course that one song, Why Don't We Get Drunk... takes all those bar pick up C&W songs to new heights and once again is the pinacle of success. In many ways you can see why Buffett fails to get the air play he deserves. He has found the formula used in so many C&W genres, took 'em apart and exposed them for what they are.

Many people consider, Steve Goodman's City of New Orleans to be the definitve railroad song. The song tells the tale of the decline of the great American Railroads. The one thing lacking in "CONO" is the story behind the story. Jerry Jeff Walker's Railroad Lady is that missing chapter of the decline of the rails. It is an excellent story about a prostitute and how her life came and went with the rails. Buffett has included a beautiful version of this excellent ballad which should not be missed.

Now strange as it may seem, the songs discussed are not even the best songs on the album. This album should be bought simply because it has Cuban Crime Of Passion and Death Of An Unpopular Poet (not to mention He Went To Paris) These songs are Buffett at his best.

With the Exception of Cuban Crime of Passion, a song about a murder/suicide in Havana most of the album has a country/folk flavor to it. Buffett had just moved to Key West and Nashville still had a strong influence in his musical stylings. Don't let the country twang scare you away. The album will appeal to fans of folk music.

On a side note, most of the acoustic guitar work on the album is done by Steve Goodman, who is known as one of the best folk guitarists of the seventies.

5 out of 5 stars Jimmy Buffett at his finest!.......1999-08-15

"He went to Paris" is one of the greatest songs ever written. Buffett sings great ballads and then give you the great "Grapefruit, Juicey Fruit". Jimmy Buffett is one of the greatest storytellers of all time.

5 out of 5 stars A reflection of the inimitable story telling talent of Jimmy.......1999-06-03

I first heard Death of an Unknown Poet in a small used record store in Washington and was instantly drawn to the unique story telling talents of Jimmy Buffet. I bought the album (record not CD) and was equally pleased with the other songs. Thus began a long journey as a Parrothead. This CD should be in any true fan's collection.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the finest storytelling ever captured in music........1999-05-15

This is a country-ish part of the Jimmy Buffett collection. As he weaves rowdy stories, fun stories, and sad stories together with smooth melodies, you start to understand why this man has lasted as he has through the decades. Highlighted by the raucous "Cuban Crime of Passion" and heartfelt "Death of an Unpopular Poet", this is an all-too-often overlooked classic in the Buffett Library.

5 out of 5 stars Da Best!.......1999-04-18

It's gold, it's good, and you should anchor your collection with this one! Death of an Unpopular Poet is the finest thing this man ever wrote. Before, and after, there's some good stuff, but this is TRULY the beginning! Savor this, then go on to other essentials in the Buffett catalog.
