When Alanis Morissette visited Mother India in 1997, she gained new composure and, in a state of numinous bliss, wrote 17 songs for
Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, each suffused with the search for enlightenment and self-knowledge. To the likely dismay of many fans, Morissette now rages at herself. But this long-awaited follow-up to 1995's record-smashing
Jagged Little Pill is far from a disappointment. Imbued with dark, swirling psychedelic licks borrowed from Jimmy Page's song book, the disc is paradoxically both more enigmatic and revealing than
Pill. And while
Junkie shows that Morissette is no less stingy about revealing herself to her fans--her staccato stream-of-consciousness style is again employed to surrender her secrets and foibles a little too easily in these tales of abuse, lost love, and self-flagellation--
Junkie also makes one wonder what this musical sphinx holds back. In "Baba" she takes on competitive spirituality, sneering at the fashionable grasp for enlightenment. "Would Not Come" returns to a similar theme--taking us on a tour of her diary. "Would Not Come" and "Your House" offer the only hints of sexual innuendo. The only revenge she wreaks on an errant lover is in the percussive "Are You Still Mad," this time dishing up a much subtler payback than on "You Oughta Know." The record's standouts, meanwhile, are "Thank U" and the hip-poppy "So Pure." One complaint (and there is only one): Morissette's rapid-fire wordplay is at times engulfed by ponderous instrumentation. The worldbeat rhythms and elaborate guitar play add fresh twists to the album, but they also sometimes bury her message.

Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie doesn't set out to re-create
Jagged Little Pill in sound or attitude. Some of Ms. Morissette's new songs, like the single "Thank U," have clear-cut choruses; some don't. The tone is different, too. Where
Jagged Little Pill often lashed out, much of
Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie is about reconciliation: with parents, with lovers, with the fears and weaknesses that Ms. Morissette saw in herself.

Infectious.......2007-06-12
I just pulled out this album after putting away Alanis for a long time. Infectious, thoughtful, and underrated are words that come to mind. Gone are the whiny accusations of Jagged Little Pill, replaced by melodic introspection. Among the best tracks: the life affirming "Joining You," the contrite "Are You Still Mad," the melacholy "That I Would Be Good," and the humble "Thank U." Overall, a lovely and meditative album for Alanis.
That She Would Be Good.......2007-03-28
If the follow-up to Alanis Morissette's phenominal Jagged Little Pill sounds complex and complicated at times, it's only because Morissette's own set of circumstances were of that fate with having millions of listeners waiting to see what artistic direction the singer was going to pursue next. After finding a greater sense of self-worth and renewed inspiration with her trip to India in 1997, Morissette returned to the music charts in late 1998 with a collection of songs influenced by eastern thoughts, worldbeats rhythms, and psychedelic guitar grooves. She also takes a stab at playing the flute on a couple of tracks, but even more appealing is how Morissette's own lyrics still flow with her confessional honesty and earnest nature. While the tone of this recording feels a little questionable in the middle with songs that seem too abstract for the average listener to concur with("The Couch," "Can't Not," "UR," and "I Was Hoping")Morissette does bounce back in the end with "Would Not Come" and the songs that follow after. The result is an album unlike Jagged Little Pill but still one consumed with feeling, rawness, purity, and unapologetic emotion. No wonder she's been called by some as a modern-day Carole King.
Supposed Former Alanis Fan.......2007-02-22
Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie is one of the most eccentric albums to have been released in the 90's. Nobody can dismiss it as a complete failure because it genuinely does have its moments. But then of course there are songs like "Front Row" or "One" (to name just a few) that are shamelessly self-indulgent and should never have been released to the commercial public. The problem with Alanis, is that she has never been able to leave some things to a listener's imagination. What helped "Jagged Little Pill" become one of the ten best-selling albums of all time in the United States is that the lyrics were personal, but generic enough to still spark the fascination of listeners. In the case of "Supposed Former," the lyrics are painstakingly overwritten well beyond the point of gratuitousness and rather than follow a coherent format, they meander. This sort of no-holds-barred lyrical approach suits certain songs--"Baba," "Thank U," "The Couch," and "So Pure" at least adhere their obscure lyrics to a structured melody. If all art is valid, then everyone should have a painting hanging up in the Louvre, but the sign of a true artist is one who can temper their artistic integrity in a manner that engages others. "Jagged Little Pill" was a catchy, poignant, emotive masterpiece that struck a nerve with tens of millions of people. "Supposed Former," on the other hand, is far too self-involved and should have remained in the pages of Alanis' diary; where such clumsy, wordy, overreaching attempts at poetry belong. Unfortunately, this killed whatever momentum "Jagged Little Pill" had created and permanently closed the door on Alanis for tens of millions of fans.
Her best work by far!!.......2007-01-11
Not one song on this album is less significant than the others enough to skip. From family relations, to structured religion, to unsent letters to past lovers, this album covers a wide spectrum of feelings, thoughts, memories and speculations. If you're an Alanis fan, this is THE must-have album.
Alanis's Sophomore Stunner.......2006-10-07
Recording a follow-up to a multi-platinum juggernaut debut album can be a daunting task. Especially for a young woman in her 20's, exhausted by the overwhelming success and seemingly endless promotion that she found herself facing. So what was she to do, after getting off the ride of her life and finding herself more lost and confused than she had ever been before? Why, she retreated to India, in hopes of awakening her spirituality, finding enlightenment, and gaining answers to the questions that plagued her. And thus, after a roughly three year hiatus, Alanis re-emerged into America's music scene, with her sophomore offering, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie.
Sales were exceptional in the first week, shattering records, but soon, just as quickly as they rose, sales declined, and when all was said and done, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie sold about 2 million copies, a sharp and unpleasant contrast to Jagged Little Pill's 14 million. However, I believe this was the line in the sand that divided those who purchased JLP: those who were actually fans of Alanis and those who simply bought whatever was popular at the time, what they heard on the radio, which, ultimately, is a great thing.
But, back to the review: Like I said, Alanis was completely shellshocked by all that success she garnered, and found herself not even wanting to continue her music career, found herself drifting and unfulfilled. And that is the big theme of this record: her coping with her success, and discovering that, surprise, surprise, success doesn't necessarily bring happiness. By the end, Alanis is comfortable with where she is in life and ready to take the next step on her journey. As a result of all the ups and downs and experiences Alanis went through, this record is more raw, personal, honest, and revealing than Pill could have ever been. The production is top-notch and superior to Pill as well. Despite the initial negativity towards this album, I strongly maintain that it is her best work and definitely, one of the best CDs in my collection.

For all Alanis junkies.......2002-09-04
I have the Australian import, but that only has one bonus track, a demo of "Uninvited". The Japanese one may have one or two more (common practise to keep the Nikkei going). The original version should have been on the album, but there must not have been room. As for the one I have, I found it in the bargain bin. I listen to this one more than the new or first ones combined.
EXCELLENT.......2000-10-29
Alanis has come up with another SPECTACULAR album!! Some people say that "SFIJ" isn't as good as Alanis' last album, "Jagged Little Pill", but I reckon it's HEAPS better! At first I didn't like the album, but then I just kept listening to it and now I love it!! My advice to people who don't like this album at first is keep listening to it, and you will eventually love it as much as I do!!
PS. Don't expect too much of the "Uninvited" Demo: it's only Alanis singing with a piano. You're better off buying the "City Of Angels" soundtrack so you can have the real version complete with all of the instruments!!
the best album of all time.......2000-09-10
words can not explain this album, buy it. i swear too you after a few listens youll be hooked
This is the best album I've ever heard..........2000-04-21
I thought "jagged little pill" was a brilliant album. So when "supposed former infatuation junkie" came out and I listened to it- it was night and day compared to JLP. But this cd shows alanis maturing in her music. She's not AS angry as she was , and she expresses her feelings much differently on this cd. My favorite song is "that I would be good", that song (i think) represents alanis more to me than anyother song she has. ...hey, did you know she wrote that song in her closet?
what i'm TRYING to say is- that supposed former infatuation junkie is a very good cd to cry to, relate to, rock to, dance to, and sing along with!
Even If You Didn't Like Her First Album: This One Is Great!.......2000-01-29
I can't stand Alanis' first album "Jagged Little Pill" - so much more surprised am I about "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie"! It is a brilliant album, showing rocking, sexy, sensitive, bitchy, jazzy... MUSICALly genius sides of this Canadian mega talent. One of the best albums released this year.
