This Santa Barbara band may look like The Jam, but they sound like surf punks with English degrees. Named after seven lesbians who lived across the hall from singer-guitarist Tim Pagnotta and dubbed themselves "sugarcult," this band fill the airwaves with their own brand of clever wretchedness, constantly veering between hardcore and pop punk, attempting to be all things to all listeners. And they come pretty close with their aerobic, bombastic drumming, nimble guitar work, and Pagnotta's sneering vocals. Luckily, they listened to enough Green Day and Elvis Costello to put a witty face on their spewing invective about dislocation, alienation, and tales of love gone bad that lands just this side of insincere. --Jaan Uhelszki

5 out of 5 stars Wrapped in Plastic, cause here we come, major lable success.......2006-08-11

Some songs selected from their last independent release "Wrapped in Plastic", Sugarcult was picked up by a major label, and boom, they explode onto the world. Working their songs into soundtracks like Van Wilder and American Pie, Sugarcult took America by storm. This album is full of incredible tunes, with great hooks and melodies. Song Like "Pretty Girl", "Stuck in America" and "Bouncing Off The Walls" scream for this album to be heard and played loud. The songs are about love, life, break-ups, new relations, ect...all of what makes a good rock album. Everyone interested in Sugarcult must have this album, you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2005-07-31

This is actually the best cd I have ever listened to. Usually I like only a few songs on a cd, but I actually love every single song here. I'd classify the whole cd as pop-punk, but each song has an underlying musical element. Their earlier release of Wrap Me Up in Plastic, is also fabulous.

4 out of 5 stars ..Rock..Emo..Pop.........2005-05-05

I looked everywhere for this CD. Over the course of 2 years I had finally found it at a Bust Buy. There was one left. I didn't really stop to think about buying it, so I just grabbed it. I put it in my CD Player and was amazed to here such good music by this band... this band i thought was just going to be another hunk of scum on the CD market. Actually, the suprise came to be that it wasn't at all. Sugarcult's Start Static has a cool kind of thing in their music.. i really dont know what there is.. but i find it similar to American Hi-Fi ( Comparing BOUNCING OFF THE WALLS to FLAVOR OF THE WEAK ) ... Anyways, majority of the songs on this CD are ' superb ' and worth buying for just the few that really stand out.

5 out of 5 stars The Good Days Of Sugarcult.......2005-04-16

I love this cd. When I think of Punk I think of the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and of course Sugarcult. I've been listening to Sugarcult for quite a while now. My sister actually got me into this band when she used to live in California 3-4 years ago. The very first song i heard from them was "Say I'm Sorry." With lyrics like "If you wanna get down, wrap me up in plastic because i'm feeling pornographic now... I think i'm feeling sick again we're making up with sex again," who wouldn't laugh and enjoy them.

Start Static overall is a great cd. I love every song on it. My favourite on here would have to be "Hate Every Beautiful Day" because it's the perfect song to listen to on a bad day when nothing's going your way. Pump this up on your stereo and the bad day blues will slowly disappear. "Faces in the crowd, fake smiles for smiles... I wish it was raining because i hate every beautiful day." After the movie Van Wilder, who doesn't know "Bouncing Off the Walls?" This is a great song to listen to when you've had that right amount of sugar and caffeine together. Your heart rate goes up just listening to it because it gets you going. I love the way I feel just listening to it.

"Pretty Girl (the way)" is my next favourite song. When i first heard it i'd just gotten out of a relationship where i was cheated on and i listened to this song for 17 hours straight on repeat. It's one of those songs that you can't get tired of. I really love it. You feel a connection with it. HAHAHA, now to a song that we sing to my friend, "You're the One." Lol. This song has been dubbed hers by all of her friends. She drives all of us crazy but we love her. This song has a very good beat, it makes you wanna dance, and bang your head around. "How Does it feel" has this awesome guitar going in the beginning. I just wanna dance to it as well. "Well i'm back for some more, round two was a bore... and it's 1:45 and i'm feeling alive, i've got it all and it's your last call. There's somebody new and she's better than you. You've been replaced by a prettier face, so look who's crying now..."

OVERALL THIS CD IS GREAT. Even though Amazon doesn't carry "Wrap Me In Plastic" this is a great substitute for it. This cd gives you Sugarcult straight foreward.

5 out of 5 stars One of 2001's best power pop albums.......2005-04-03

Start Static is an excellent CD, full of songs most can relate to. I have to say that Start Static is more "punky" or alternative than Palm Trees And Power Lines (which really only has 2-3 good songs, and they're all singles).

The only bad thing about this album (and it's not Sugarcult -- or its label's -- fault. It's that half of the songs on this album are heard in the film Van Wilder ("Bouncing Off the Walls", "Stuck In America", "How Does It Feel" and the rest of Start Static is plastered all over Van Wilder's DVD menus).

14-17 year old males is really this album's demographic, but so is Van Wilder. Start Static would probably sound dull to anyone who bought this CD because of the film.

If you like, say, uh... Fall Out Boy or, oh, American Hi-Fi (also on the Van Wilder soundtrack), you'll like Sugarcult. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Not the best, but still very good.......2006-03-21

The first album by Static-X I bought was Shadow Zone, after hearing about it from a friend. I instantly became a fan. After listening to it, I worked my way backwards to Machine and later, Wisconsin Death Trip. I loved all their previous music and could not wait for the release of Start a War. The hype about them going back to WDT intrigued me. When I bought it, I was blown away. The very first song throws you right in. The Enemy is a great opener for an album like this. I still think a video for The Enemy would have been better, but I'm the One is a great song, too. After listening to it, I must say I enjoyed it, but it wasn't exactly what I was expecting it to be. It starts out great, with a drag in the middle and has a bizarre ending. Great cd though.

Here is my rating of each song:
1. The Enemy- a great way to start the cd, great for driving
2. I'm the One- great song
3. Start a War- title track, great song
4. Pieces- my favorite song from the album
5. Dirthouse- second favorite song, glad they made a video
6. Skinnyman- took a few listenings but now this song is great
7. Just In Case- don't quite get where they were going with this one, Love Dump from WDT was better
8. Set It Off- again, part of the drag in the album
9. I Want To F***ing Break It- the drag continues and ends with this song
10. Night Terrors- great song, gets the album back on track
11. Otsego Amigo- a little different from their other Otsego songs, but still really cool
12. My Damnation- great song
13. Brainfog- this track (I'm not really going to say song for this one) is nearly opposite from the rest of the album. It starts off with a techno-dance beat ending in silence, followed by the lyrics to Otsego Amigo, without the music, not quite sure about this track

I loved this album. If you are a Static-X fan, this album is a must. It features Koichi Fukada, the guitarist from Wisconsin Death Trip and brings some of the sound from Wisconsin Death Trip back.

4 out of 5 stars Another Great One From STATIC-X.......2006-03-10

As a loyal Static-X fan, I picked up this CD on it's release date several months back. First of all, I don't know why so many people complained about 2001's "Machine" and 2003's "Shadow Zone"...they were both great CDs. I could see maybe where some fans disliked "Shadow Zone" because it had a slightly more alternative feel to it, but "Machine" was every bit as good as their first album ("Wisconsin DeathTrip"). My theory is that the band was so unique when they came out, people fell in love with them, but once they got used to their sound, they weren't easily impressed.
Here's what I also don't get, here on the band's 4th album, they stick with pretty much the same sounds they used on "Shadow Zone"...and now so many of my fellow Static-X fans are saying it's the best album they've done since their first. Maybe it's because they have their original guitarist and the original producer back that people just programmed it into their heads that this album will be better. Well, it IS very good, it totally met my expectations, but I wouldn't at all say that it's any better than their last 2 albums.
Oh well, as I said before, this album has a pretty similar feel as the "Shadow Zone" album...keeping a very heavy, electronic sound but also being significantly more radio-friendly than their first 2 albums. The opening songs are "The Enemy" and "I'm The One" and are both very good, but they don't grab your attention like some of the other songs on here. The album's title-track is one of the heaviest and has a crazy chorus where singer Wayne Static does some of his trademark speed-screaming. "Dirthouse", has a steady grinding beat, and although it's a little more relaxed for Static-X, it's one of the coolest songs on the album. I bet the chorus sounds really good in concert. "Pieces" is another cool track with it's fair share of screaming and melody, and could pass for something strait off the last album. All the songs on here are pretty solid. I know in this review, it may seem like I'm complaining about this album a bit, but I'm not. I love this CD, I'm just saying it doesn't sound like "Wisconsin Death Trip" as many people have claimed it does. If you liked "Shadow Zone" then you will certainly like this one. The band seems to have a pattern here...the first 2 albums were very heavy and industrial, like Fear Factory...the next 2 albums have been more like Korn in the sence that it's more alternative but still heavier than anything on radio. I wonder what their next musical step will be. Give it a listen and see what you think!

3 out of 5 stars Ruined by excessive language.......2005-12-03

This C.D. would have been so drastically better if there had not been so many unneeded expletives in it. The rhythms are great, the singer's voice is good, and the electric guitars have a cool sound which is similar to Soulfly and Skindred; but the lyrics simply destroy the music in their horridness. Sure, the band may be trying to create a sense of anger, but they ought to try and do this in a way that does not sound like cussing for the heck of it. Static-X has a commendable amount of neat electronic beats on this album, as well as a satisfactory loudness factor: but none of this seems to register in my mind when every other word is a swear word. I would not recommend this C.D. for this reason, but would definitely suggest the purchase of a clean version if there is one.

5 out of 5 stars "A really good cd," says Connor D.G........2005-10-18

I really enjoyed this album,it was just one of those cd's where you buy it for one song, and like them all.My opinion is that
"Set it Off" is the best.If your into angry yelling music you should defenitly pick this up!

2 out of 5 stars Static X , an Honest Review (My Opinion).......2005-09-04

Static X first grabbed me back in the days with, "Push it, I'm with stupid, and Bled for days". (Machine) grabbed me with, "This is not, Black and White, Otsego Undead, and Structural Defect". However, there are not many songs on this album that I can say really grab me as the old Static X of the past had done. I do like, "Skinnyman" being my favorite of this album, and have given, "Otsego Amigo" a fair liking without all the lyrical screeching would have been better, but it has a nice beat, "I'm the One" has a small part in my heart as well. Without offending I would have to honestly say in my opinion buy, "Wisconsin Deathtrip, Machine, and if you have to buy another static x album buy Shadow Zone" I really like, "Kill your idols, and So".. By the way Static X rules, I just hope they go back to their B*tt kicking days with push it, stupid, kill your idols, and this is not. Asta!

4 out of 5 stars Solid 4.......2006-11-07

Back to basics Static! Groovy, riff based metal. Songs avg. 3 minutes, so the cd plugs away.. Original Guitarist back. Sounds great and is a welcome return to form after sub-par Shadow Zone cd.cheers....

5 out of 5 stars Another great album from Static-X!!!.......2006-07-04

How do they do it?! I DONT KNOW! BUT WHAT I DO KNOW IS THAT ITS GREAT!!!

The follow up to 2003's full-length album is a great effort and you'll love it. Start A War is heavier that Shadow Zone, but not quite as heavy as Machine. I love this album for the fact that you can tell theres soul in it. Less Industrial sounds on this one, but they're still there.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reunion.......2006-06-29

"Start A War" is the newest album by Static-X. This album brings back the original "Wisconsin Death Trip" crew. The only exception is that Ken Jay is replaced by the band's touring drummer, Nick Oshiro. However the final product delivered finally achieves the greatness that Static-X has longed for since "Wisconsin Death Trip" in 1999. There are some truly brilliant songs on this album such as "Dirthouse" and "Night Terrors". But, then there are the lows of the album such as "Just In Case". Keeping with their 'Otsego' theme, there is a new edition to the family with "Otsego Amigo". As with "Wisconsin Death Trip", the final track on the album is a sort of 'dance/rock' track. Altogether Static-X have managed to release what is possibly their best album ever.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome 4th Album.......2006-04-27

Before this album i really had no order of importance to my Static-X cd collection. It really brings everything home as a culmination into one cohesive sound for the band, which is awesome(i think that may have been an undestatement). This is the end product of their sound over the past few years after Wisconsin Death Trip with the brooding Electronica tinged Thrash Metal, the slightly more automated Machine and the Melodic and surprisingly good Shadow Zone. Each CD i enjoyed and each CD added to the sound of Static-X. Having been a fan of their music since Wisconsin Death Trip i cant wait for their next one(especially since the original lineup is back together except for the absent Ken Jay).

Music is a personal thing, so I won't spend a lot of time talking about individual tracks, but I will say that the edited version stinks. I normally like to get the edited versions of CDs for various reasons; mostly I think swearing is the expression of a weak mind--I'd like the artist to put a bit more thought into his songs and not just fill syllables with explicatives. I also don't want to subconsciously incorporate such mindless dribble into my own vocabulary. Having said that, the editing in this disc is awful--they cut out words like "gun" and "pills" but some traditional swear words are left in. The result is an album with choppy lyrics that still swears at you; just not as much as the original version.
