Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
Solace, Nova Scotian Sarah McLachlan's second album, is considerably more mature and musically sophisticated than her 1988 debut, the promising if limited Touch. In fact, this disc is a must-have for McLachlan fans whose first encounter with her work was with her extremely popular later releases, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy and Surfacing. The opening track, "Drawn to the Rhythm," is a habit-forming gem of a song that soars on her smooth and heady soprano and Ronald Jones's addictive drums (though the drone of the billatron in the chorus seems incongruous). The rumbling, electric "Into the Fire" grooves with a funky bass line; the lovelorn "Path of Thorns" and "I Will Not Forget You" are straight-ahead and bluesy. Always wise beyond her years, McLachlan displays a new awakening with introspective songs such as the Sinead O'Connor-esque "Lost" and "Shelter." The hymnlike "Mercy" is the least interesting song--spare in comparison to the others--but it is a wondrous showcase of her multifaceted voice. Without a doubt, Solace is a testament to McLachlan's ever-swelling talent. --Rebecca Robinson

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2007-05-14

I have been enchanted by this CD. THe music drew me in at first-which is melodic and sophisticated, familiar yet unpredictable, and then the lyrics have been continually thought provoking and increasingly moving with each listen. Xavier is as deep and talented a musician and storyteller as they come.
I like this album better than Food in the Belly, and the video clips are definitely a bonus which really makes you want to see Xavier live!

5 out of 5 stars great music from down under.......2007-05-12

xavier rudd is a multi-talented musician ..combining slide guitar, voice and digierdoo in multilevel music..sometimes he sounds like a happy ben Harper, sometimes like Paul Simon. there is folk and bluesy music on this cd..and Harry Manx!! highly recommended!!

4 out of 5 stars Xavier Rudd is amazing.......2006-11-10

I stumbled upon this guy at a Bonarroo music festival a few years back and was blown away. It was just this one guy with a number of instruments set up around him, including 3 diggerydoos (I have no idea how to spell that). It took my a while to track his music down, but I have a ton of it now and never get tired of it. It's new, upbeat and chill.

5 out of 5 stars A gem of a musician.......2006-11-07

Definitely a striking blend of music. His ability to produce this much coherent sound by himself (he is accompanied on only four tracks) is amazing. "GBA" is my personal favorite (excellent rhythm) which sums up his blend of didgeridoo and guitar. "Let Me Be" is a fun, diverse track. Not a bad song on the whole album. (Also his take on "No Woman, No Cry" is tasteful)

5 out of 5 stars Best New Find!!!.......2006-09-23

Xavier Rudd's Solace albulm is my newest find. I absolutly love his music. Very orginal. I would suggest people new to his music buy this albulm 1st. He has a great voice that sounds like Dave Matthews Band on some tracks and Paul Simon on others. A very good albulm... buy it you will NOT be disappointed ;)

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Piano Music of Scott Joplin.......2007-06-08

John Arpin does a great job with these pieces. The songs carry a consistent sound and are played very close to as-written, which comes and goes with old ragtime pieces. The stamping on Stop-Time Rag doesn't have a consistent sound to it, can be a little distracting. Everything else is great, overall I think that it's a great buy, I'm very happy with it.

2 out of 5 stars Another Performer Rewrites Joplin's Masterpieces.......2007-05-31

Once again, another performer feels the need to rewrite the music of the King of Ragtime. Scott Joplin spins in his grave each and every time this recording is played.

Again, to those who believe that concert music is meant to be rewritten by each and every performer I ask, is the same treatment also acceptable for Chopin's and Rachmaninoff's music? Would "Moonlight Sonata" sound better if played at twice the tempo and with a reprise of the first Adagio movement thrown in at the end? Obviously, the answer to these questions is a resounding NO!, so why does one of America's greatest composers get such disrespect?

Interpretation is an integral part of every performance. Adding one's own notes, phrases and chords where none should be is not. Randomly changing the structure of the piece is not. Playing a piece at twice the indicated tempo is not.

One the plus side, the depth of this collection is outstanding. Joplin's lesser known pieces like "Harmony Club Waltz" really shine. The recording is decent in quality, although a bit bassy in places.

While its been stated before, I feel its worth repeating: Buy Joshua Rifkin's performances of Joplin in order to hear how the Master intended his pieces to sound.

4 out of 5 stars complete piano music of Scott Joplin on 4 CD's.......2007-02-14

Although all of the music is terrific it is rather a lot of a similar sound. I think I would have preferred 2 CD's of selected piano works of Scott Joplin. But I did get the music at a good price.

5 out of 5 stars Ragtime Marvel.......2005-10-09

This collection of Scott Joplin's piano music is outstanding. As a lover of ragtime which was a prelude to jazz, I am thoroughly enjoying this collection. If you are not a lover of jazz, you may be a lover of ragtime. Jazz can sometimes be grating on the nerves, whereas ragtime lifts the spirit.

3 out of 5 stars Complete, but poor quality.......2005-09-25

I have been learning some ragtime and wanted to hear more to find other selections to learn. Listened to Maple Leaf Rag, my favorite, first and was disappointed. Listened to others and was more disappointed. Maple flies - much faster than anyone would play it, you can't make out some of the phrases. And talk about ad libs - Tempo, dynamics, embelishments, nuances - I really think he plays some wrong notes too because he's going so fast. It's really a poor recording - and that's just on Maple Leaf. Others with "intros" start quick and then there's a grand pause, not a rest, but nearly a five second break. It's hard to argue how Joplin would have played it, but this is hardly anything I want to try to imitate. The only qualitating factor is the number of songs for the price. A lot of variety of a poor interpretation is only worth 3 stars. if that. Look for Rifkin or a copy that is as written to listen to first, then go for the ad libs and "artistic interpretations"

2 out of 5 stars Pretty voice but nothing here whatsoever........2006-11-20

It's a good album to listen to while cleaning your apartment. Save your money. Assuming your time is valuable don't bother listening to it. It would be a complete and total waste of time. Sarah proves again that she has some powerful pipes but so what? At least "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" has "Possession" and a couple of other songs which have hooks. You get the picture that Sarah was under pressure from the record company and just cranked out some songs with no hit potential and nothing really for the concentrating listener.

4 out of 5 stars Drawn to Solace.......2006-11-20

My first purchase at Amazon!

When I heard samples of I Will Not Forget You, Shelter, and Lost, I just felt I needed to own this CD. I'm glad I ordered this!

People who enjoyed McLachlan's Surfacing, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, and Afterglow will certainly like this album. Casual listeners may find only Drawn to the Rhythm, Path of Thorns, and I Will Not Forget You interesting for their catchy tune.

4 out of 5 stars I don't think it's better than Afterglow.......2006-06-22

First off I just want to say that Sarah Mclachlan has been one of my three and only three favorites (at least right now) since I heard her song Full of Grace a few years back. I got all of her albums except Touched. I just have to say that I am a little disappointed with Solace.

The thing about Solace is that when I heard it I kept asking myself: is this Sarah?? THE Sarah??? 'cause it doesn't sound like her at all. I don't mean that her voice is different, I meant the overall style. Solace sounded just too cheerful in comparason to her other albums, or not as mature as I should say. It sounded almost pop. Also the way she sings just sounded too unnature to me. I know there are people who say this album is better than her Afterglow, I couldn't disagree more, Afterglow still sounded like Sarah's style, but not this one.

I love all her albums except, I'm sad to say, this one. If you are a Sarah fan, go get her last three albums, you won't be disappointed I promise, just avoid this one.

5 out of 5 stars Not appreciated enough.......2006-05-09

Out of all Sarah's cds this is the one I think is most often overlooked but it shouldn't be. This is a fine cd and one of my favorites. I'll admit while I owned it, it was a while before I really got into it but it has since become one of my favorites.

This cd is Sarah's second after her debut. It shows her strengths as a masterful songwriter in addition to her uncanny sense of melody. The lyrics are deep and introspective, often dark and filled with imagery. Lighter tracks like "Into the Fire" contrast well with the darker "Mercy" and "Black" and sorrowful tracks like "The Path of Thorns" and "I Will Not Forget You" add to the depth of the cd. "Mercy" in particular, while incredibly depressing, really stands out as it showcases the immense power of her voice.

Many consider her third cd "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" to be her best but this is still excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent sound and quality.......2006-03-02

All the songs on this album are good. You can definitely tell the difference in the early younger Sarah from her later albums but the good thing is she was extremely talented even on her earlier works. It also good for fan to see how she developed and honed her skills.

I personally love Sarah's music and enjoy her earlier works..but I would say I prefer her later sound. But this is a definite must have for any REAL Sarah fan.

4 out of 5 stars What the heck???.......2007-03-20

Music is great, as is the playing. However, the last song is not Magnetic Rag but rather the same version of Maple Leaf Rag heard earlier on the album.

What is with that?

5 out of 5 stars More Than Excellent.......2006-08-16

I had previously purchased a Scott Joplin CD and was disappointed by the dull quality and dispirited playing by the artist. This CD more than makes up for it. The music was beautifully performed and the recording was very clear. Every piece was perfect!

The languid, Billie Holiday-like phrasing comes even more to the fore on the solo label debut by RobinElla, who surveys a landscape on Solace for the Lonely that extends from jazzy swing to Appalachian spirituals to '70s funk. While her previous recordings, billed as RobinElla and the CC Stringband, were more acoustic and string-driven, the percussion and organ groove of "Little Boy" and the scat-laced "All I've Given" take her farther from her musical roots in bluegrass and Tennessee mountain music. Yet the heartbreak waltz of "Teardrop" would sound just fine on a shot-and-a-beer honky-tonk jukebox, and "Press On" has the open-hearted purity of Appalachian church. She even channels her inner Melanie on a playful revival of "Brand New Key," while the title song spotlights the sophistication of a jazz chanteuse. --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a real surprise.......2007-05-07

I found Robinella courtesy of a Pandora link. I was immediately enthralled with her voice and style, the range of her tastes. So much so, I ended up buying all her available albums. Completely unique and ambiguous, I have been particularly fond of "Break it Down," and " Press On," the latter which I have already scheduled for my funeral.

5 out of 5 stars To be enjoyed, not analyzed.......2006-12-20

The depth of feeling and power of this music took my breath away and left me wiping away tears, sometimes of sadness and sometimes exhilaration. These songs, for me "Press On" especially, will hook you, make you stop what you're doing and touch your heart. No need to dissect the arrangements or analyze the artist. Just be nourished by it. The album is aptly named, in my opinion, since there is a difference between closure and solace, there often being no closure for lonliness and loss. This music conveys the distinction well. I would buy this one to compensate the artist for providing such an exquisitely beautiful way to get in touch with feelings of value.

3 out of 5 stars All polished up and headed in the Wrong direction.......2006-09-11

Nice, but not special. Overproduced, overarranged (if that's a word) I guess this is a mainstream Nashville sound. Too bad. I liked her and the CC String Band's earlier recordings.

5 out of 5 stars What a Tremendous Talent.......2006-08-07

This music is so soulful that it takes my breath away. Robinella's voice is full of feeling - pain, joy, loneliness, longing - it's all there. "Down the Mountain" and "Whippin Wind" are but a couple of the gems on this wonderful CD. I'll be seeing Robinella this week in Madison, WI, and can't wait! Buy this CD and hear for yourself how much passion and feeling music can hold.

5 out of 5 stars Etherial.......2006-07-23

Robinella's performance on this work is simply wonderful. With the voice of passion and innocence Robin entrances the listener with a delightful mix of sounds not easily catalogued. Her faith background is fully incorporated with the mountain music of America very evident. I highly recommend a listen to this lovely music.

The search for solace involves a difficult reconciliation of conflicting emotions, pitting one's need to grieve at odds with a heavy-hearted realization that life, however diminished, must go on. Using an audio palette of grays and dark blues, Michael Hoppe offers Solace as a balm for the soul during such times, "where the dark clouds in life give way to the glow of eternal hope and peace." The clouds never fully lift during the 12 tracks of Solace, which appear to progress in a stages-of-mourning manner. The effect can be moving, even lovely (particularly the grand orchestral opener, "The Majestic Land," one of four splendid selections involving the Prague Symphony -- recorded remotely via an Internet link, of all things). The prevailing mood is melancholy but not quite maudlin; two angelic arias ("Pie Jesu," which Hoppe had written for the memorial service of his wife's mother, and "Lachrymosa") are tearless, reverent expressions that aspire to the divine. The closing moment of "The Parting," a retooled but otherwise ordinary composition from 1986 that involves Vangelis, finally yields a sense of closure. For those in a state of bereavement, Hoppe's Solace may offer you comfort. --Terry Wood

Customer Reviews:

First track could be a county's anthem, very nicely performed. The remainder of album is inspiring, and much like Hoppe's other works.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Music to Work and Meditate to.......2006-10-19

I am seldom so overwhelmed with the beauty of a piece of music that I'm moved to tears. This does just that to me. Each track is as meaningful and beautiful wrought. Powerful stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Heartbreakingly Beautiful.......2006-09-16

Michael Hoppe is a treasure. From his earliest recordings until his latest, Requiem, I have never been disappointed. Solace does not have one track that you will skip over. The soloists, where there are vocals, are superb and speak straight to the heart. Occasionally we are given a musical gift that lasts us a lifetime. This is one of those gifts.

5 out of 5 stars A New Age Gem.......2005-09-05

This is a beautiful collection of New Age music that should please fans of the genre. Perfect for listening alone or with others. The music is soothing at times, but at others, is fervent and burning.

The first piece of this recording ("The Majestic Land") is like a throwback to "The Big Country." This being my first impression, I thought every other piece was going to sound like movie soundtracks. But no, the second piece proved me wrong. "So You" was like an unworded song of love, eternity, and promise. By the time of the third piece, you'll be burning with the passion and desire of the strings in "Romance for Violin and Orchestra." The pieces afterwards more or less delve into that rich and sometimes otherworldly territory that is New Age, reaching again into a certain height with "Jude's Theme" and "Nimbus," then coming into a prayerful respite in "Pie Jesu." These pieces are what really make up the theme of "Solace."

The last piece called "The Parting," is a very good piece for dispersing all that left-over burden we accumulated in a day's time. The first time I heard it, and afterwards, I felt like I was in the calm, sunny waters of the Greek sea, and swimming among majestic whales!

There is something for everyone in this recording. Solace does not necessarily mean to be alone, and the music here proves that it can be listened to in the solace of lovers, or a dear friend.

5 out of 5 stars Fly.......2004-03-06

Fly away through the sky and let your imagination get a way from materialistic life. This CD is very Relaxing and Soothing especially when you listen to it outside maybe in the park. Have a nice time.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Please buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good CD for quiet reflection.......2007-04-25

I agree with the comments the remix CD was a nice addition but in no way compares to the original disc. The comparison to Massive Attack were fairly apt and you can hear hints of a "Teardrop" sound to several songs; it's far lighter, subtle, and ethereal than a Morcheeba, Portishead, Olive, or other groups which others compared this to.

This definitely isn't music for a vigorous exercise session or dancing, but is perfect for a day of quiet reflection. It would also be ideal if you were looking for something which would be agreeable to an extremely broad cross-section of listeners, it'd be a nice changeup from classical or similar during your dinner or cocktail party.

4 out of 5 stars Forget the remixes.......2007-01-09

The core album of this set is awesome; the remixes are forgettable. But again, disc one is amazing!

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-11-14

I read many reviews of this CD that referred to the music as Trip-Hop. The phrase "Don't believe everything you read" comes to mind immediately. The music is anything but Trip-Hop. The second CD is a compliation of re-mixes that makes a faint attempt towards trip-hop, but falls extremely short. If you asked me what the music is like I would tell you that the first CD is "Sweet Music" (a nice female voice accompanied by simple instruments portraying a beautiful day at the local park...almost resembling a sad attempt at pop music. As a big fan of true trip-hop such as Massive Attack, I was somewhat excited when I began listening to the second CD. The first track quickly caught my attention and I began to think that my purchase wasn't a total loss. However, I was quickly dissapointed by the progressive fade of energy as each track drug on.

5 out of 5 stars Never a dull moment.......2006-03-03

A really good CD, although it took a few spins to really appreciate it. This album is amazing. Mandalay is an artist who isn't well known enough, but I feel special just having stumbled across their music. They remind me of a mix of "Everything But The Girl" , "Spicehouse" and "Portishead". I have always wondered why some bands just never get as popular as others, and Mandalay should be more popular. There is so much to like in their music. I was actually listening to a techno set and one of the tracks incorportated was Beautiful and that just set me off. Mandalay blends different sounds into a brilliant piece of music that will get play time from any owner for a long time. Never a dull moment-- highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars simply great.......2006-01-26

this is one of my favorite albums. nicola has the most style and depth of any "trip-hop" singer out there. the production is great on this album too. this is like a "greatest hits" album, so all of the songs on here are superb. talk about most bang for the buck too, cuz the second cd contains a plethora of remixes. If you buy any mandalay album, you must buy this one. if you're a true fan pick up the other albums and be sure to visit http://nicolahitchcock.com

5 out of 5 stars Available at retailers for about $18.......2006-12-21

Excellent collection - but there are re-sellers listed here that are selling this for as much $50 or $60. Yikes, most major retailers are selling this complete set for $18 - so beware.

5 out of 5 stars A classic compilation.......2006-10-07

This collection is one of my most treasured possessions. (My father gave me the original 5-album set in the 70's when it was originally released on vinyl.)

This is the definitive collection of Scott Joplin's work. Richard Zimmerman provides wonderful performances that accurately reflect Joplin's intentions. (As evidence beyond my personal opinion, I submit the recent releases of digital recordings made from Joplin's piano rolls.)

A few points to consider regarding negative comments you may encounter in other reviews:
* This is a digital recording from an analog master. Lack of quality in the recording does not imply a lackluster performance.
* This is a complete collection. Some similarity is due to Joplin re-exploring melodic themes. But some is due to the fact that these are "rags". One might as well complain that all 50's doo-wop (or all 70's disco) sounds the same.
* Many pieces of the period exhibit formal musical structures, such as the marches of John Phillips Sousa. (Both Sousa and Joplin performed at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.) Actually, Joplin is responsible for extending the formal boundaries of ragtime to concert waltzes (Bethena) and opera (A Guest of Honor, Treemonisha)
* This is probably one of the few collections which will include selections from "Treemonisha". It is my understanding that after the initial release, one of Joplin's descendants made a copyright claim that was upheld in court. (I presume the issue was that Joplin had to finance "Treemonisha" himself, and therefore the customary performance clearances did not cover those selections.)

For ragtime students and enthusiasts, this is a "must-have" collection at a very affordable price.

1 out of 5 stars A dis-service to Joplin.......2006-02-01

Sadly, the only virtue this set possesses is completeness.

The pianist does not play Joplin's pieces "as written", the piano is of poor quality, and not properly in tune.

This is emphatically NOT the set to buy. A far better set, beautifully annotated and well played on a good concert grand piano, is the complete works played by Guido Nielsen on the Basta Label.

This set is a dis-service to Joplin and his music. He deserves better, and gets it elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Unique .......2004-10-19

I have several cd sets of Joplin's music: Rifkin, Arpo, Nielsen, and Zimmerman. All have their excellent qualities. What sets Zimmerman's set apart is the inclusion of excerpts from Joplin's opera, Treemonisha---especially "A Real Slow Drag." Why the other sets do not include excerpts from Treemonisha, I don't know---because they are some of his most beautiful and joyful pieces of music. Of course, you can hear the orchestrated version of Treemonisha in the Houston Grand Opera recording, and it is spectacular. But Zimmerman's piano version, especially of "A Real Slow Drag," is not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Great set.......2001-10-16

I guess this will be a rather one sided review. I have been a fan of Scott Joplin since I first learned to play a piano.

I was shocked to see that one reviewer thought it all sounded the same. How silly. All of Frank Sinatra's music sounds like Frank Sinatra. All of Led Zeppelin sounds like Led Zeppelin. So, if the songs were drastically different, I would question if the same author composed them. As it is, though, each song on this set is fantastic!!

I don't know that I have heard of Richard Zimmerman, and I was a little leary as to what I would be getting, I certainly was impressed. Without a doubt the best renditions of "Weeping Willow" and "Bethena" I have heard, and at least a dozen songs I didn't know Joplin wrote.

Without a doubt, this album is fantastic. A very good price, as well.

Dowland did for lute music what Haydn did for the string quartet and Beethoven the piano sonata. The finest lutenist and songwriter of his age--he composed several of the greatest hits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries--the surviving lute works constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the possibilities of the instrument. There are song arrangements, dance pieces, tributes to the composer's friends, even a musical self-portrait. Much of the music is fashionably sad. Lute songs generally deal with the agony of lost love, and Dowland's most popular tune was called Lachrimae (Tears). Paul O'Dette is simply the best lutenist alive. These five discs are available together at a special price, or separately. A reference edition. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-03-31

If you are a fan of the music of John Dowland, you must own this CD. The playing is outstanding to say the least.

3 out of 5 stars It's not heavy breathing.......2006-08-22

It's great that O'Dette gives us the complete solo works, of course. I have the common reaction to O'Dette: his technique is flawless, his performance unengaging.

Others have remarked on the "heavy breathing" noticeable on the recordings -- it's not heavy breathing, but the movement of his fingers on the gut strings making that sound.

4 out of 5 stars Technically good, emotionally bland. .......2006-04-11

Considering the extreme paucity of (especially solo) lute recordings currently available worldwide,
but especially in the US, this set becomes an essential "must have" for all lovers of the lute.
Yet it somehow disappoints.
I am sure that Paul O'Dette is brimming over with virtuousity and a technical expertise
that I am hardly one to pass sound judgement upon.
But the recordings have a flatness and monotony;
the songs are rendered with precision, but seem to lack feeling, empathy, or enthusiasm throughout the offering.
It is an impressive compendium, and I'm glad I purchased it.
There are very few lutenists out there producing any music at all, so Mr. O'Dette should certainly be praised
for delivering such a substantial feast to our ears.
It just should have had more flavor.
Where is Konrad Ragossnig when you need him?

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2005-10-23

I bought Volume 1 of this set a couple of years ago. It has become one of my favorite CDs, so I thought I would enjoy the full set. I have not been disappointed. I find the sound quality excellent, the playing superb. The included booklet has a lot of interesting background material. The music is great as background for a dinner party or intimate conversation, but has depth aplenty for concentrated listening. I often listen to it while working at the computer where I swear it improves concentration and productivity!

A few tunes appear more than once as Dowland reused some work, but the arrangements are sufficiently different to be interesting. It is his complete lute works, after all. Some might criticise the set for sounding too much in the same style. It is the work of one composer, and if you happen to like the style, as I do, this is a pro rather than a con.

Another reviewer mentioned obtrusive breathing on the recording. I had listened to Volume 1 for two years before reading the review and had not noticed this. On listening carefully, there is breathing audible, but I do not find it a problem. Perhaps it depends whether one listens to the music or the background.

4 out of 5 stars just a warning..........2005-10-14

Beautiful music, but... you can hear Paul's heavy breathing throughout. Apparently a lot of other reviewers either don't hear the heavy breathing, or aren't bothered by it, but for me, it's a near deal-breaker. Go ahead and mark my review as unhelpful, but I had to put the warning out there.
