Oh Spill Canvas, How Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer's Day?.......2007-06-28

This album is a grand, sweeping epic. I listen to it when I am happy, I listen to it when I am sad, but most of all I listen to it simply because it is so beautiful. I have seen most of the songs on this album performed live by that ever-amazing South Dakota quartet, and I must say that the emotion that the band carries along with its music is nothing short of mesmerizing. When I got to meet Nick Thomas, lyricist and front man of the band, I made sure to tell him how much the music of The Spill Canvas means to me. He was nothing but utterly gracious and friendly - this only made me love this album more. If you are looking for songs similar to those on "Sunsets and Car Crashes", then perhaps you may end up disappointed when you learn that this album is a non-acoustic, no-holds-barred adventure, from start to finish. But if you are feeling a bit adventurous, and would like to hear the lyrics of Nick Thomas, who is a true poet, along with some amazing full-band accompaniment, then "One Fell Swoop" is for you. Highlights include."Staplegunned", "Polygraph, Right Now", "Dutch Courage", and "Break A Leg". Please purchase this - you will not regret it.

Beautiful Piece of Audio Art.......2007-03-09

As I said just above, this is a prime example of what I like to call Audio Art. From the dynamio begginning to the story song ending it is a great album through and through. It is more electric then their debut release but it's a welcomed change. Not that the debut was bad. The songs tell tales of broken hearts and the story song carries along a nice message of anti-suicide which is a welcome break from other bands out there.

I give it five stars because the music flows together so well, the quality is magnificent and the whole album is so through out and well laid that it deserves nothing less.

Okay so I heard a fragment of "this is for keeps" on a tv show and liked it so I was curious to know more. I could only find a few songs, but I really liked what I heard so I took the leap and purchased both one fell swoop and sunsets and car crashes. I knew I would like them, but I had no idea just how much! Anyway, on one fell swoop my favorite tracks include:
-Polygraph, right now
-The Dutch courage
-Natalie Marie and 1cc
-Teleport; A & B
-This is for keeps
-Himerus and eros
-Break a leg
-Secret Oath
-Self-conclusion
There is not a single bad song in my opinion! The cd also comes with a second disc (a sampler) which is cool. I highly recommend The Spill Canvas! They are unique and underrated.

So Underrated........2006-08-03

The Spill Canvas isn't a band that you hear of everyday. They deserve so much more recognition though. Typically I'm not really into this type of music, because other similar bands (Bright Eyes, Daphne Loves Derby, Early November, etc) are quite boring. Sure, they have a couple of good songs here and there, but nothing that would make me stick around and listen. However, the Spill Canvas is amazing, they are very talented. I don't quite remember how I discovered this band, but I'm glad I did.

The lyrics, vocals, music, EVERYTHING is enjoyable. Check out these songs:

Jazz roots meets avant garde at its best! the band is top notch and the sound (as most Lacy recordings) is great...not lush, over produced stuff like you would find on a Marsalis recording , instead you will hear warm , delightful analog type of sound which to me is the best you can get from a recording. The playing from all is very good and the compositions seem to have one foot on the traditions of jazz while another foot is pointing at a posible future (which could have saved jazz from its iminent death)...a great cd from a true artist.

This is not Dispatch.......2002-05-09

The others reviewers say this is Dispatch (an awesome group). The group Dispatch was once called "One Fell Swoop", but this CD is not them. It is a Jazz group (Steve Lacy). Nothing against Steve, but the other reviewers lead me astray on this--it isn't anything like Dispatch. It is old time Jazz. If you like Jazz, you might like this. If you want Dispatch, DO NOT get this.
