This is my favourite album of the last 10 years, brilliant songs. I just wanted to give it 5 stars here....

You cant really compare this to other albums, the songs are rich, well paced, melodic, and consistent. Its an album the really suits Autumn and Winter and dark evenings....

Definitely a unique and impressive debut.......2006-10-18

If I had to explain this album in one word, it would definitely be "unique". How often do you come across an album that starts off with a mellow instrumental? Not often. Hence the originality of this album, which first drew my ears in the direction of Doves. Aside from the uniqueness of the alubm, the band placed the songs very cleverly so it's a good listen the whole way through. It's a very impressive debut, to say the least. The overall sound of the album is very meloncholy, but there are some songs that are more upbeat than the rest. Very melodic and sometimes beautifully symphonic-sounding rock. I highly recommend this album.

Pure Exotic Sounds.......2006-06-14

I went on a trip with a buddy of mine to Cincinnati Ohio to visit his brother. While we were there his brothers roomate played some music for us as we began to play poker. The music he played instantly caught my attention as it began to send shivers down my spine. It was like nothing i had ever heard before in my life. The music was beautiful. Not as an understatement it was full of pure exotic sounds. It was something new and refreshing. Every instrument, every sound, flowed together in a way that was so soothing and so smooth. I had never heard of the band the "doves" untill i had gone on that trip with my friend but i am very greatful that i did not only because i had a good time, but i was introduced to one of the greatest bands my ears have had the pleasure of hearing.
Lost Souls comes into effect with the amazing intro of "firesuite" which reminds me somewhat of the matrix for some odd reason but starts out the album in an excellent way. The more upbeat sound of "here it comes" begins the second song and sinks you into the mysterious, refreshing music of the Doves. "Break me gently" mellows things out a little bit and creates a more mellower, somber tone to the album. "Sea Song", which happens to be one of my favorites on the album, cant be described in words, it flows so well and smoothly. You have to hear it for yourself to get a feel for it. "Rise" is another fantastic song. I love the harmonica during the middle of the song which ties the sound together so beautifully. "Lost Souls" is another good one with a catchy verse and an "ok" chorus. "Melody Calls" is very good with an excellent verse and a very catchy chorus.
Whatever i'm sick of describing every single song in detail but you get the point. Theres not really one downer on this entire album. I enjoy every single track and instead of wasting my time reviewing every song I'll recommend every song. The first time i listened to this album it blowed my mind and words cant describe how great this album really is. Listen to it for yourself and discover the unique, astonishing sound of the Doves that will for sure enhance your tastes towards actual beautiful music. Before this album i was blinded by what beautiful music acually was but i have discovered it through Lost Souls which is indeed a beautiful album with beautful rythms and beautiful sounds.

Lost Souls "Calms The Savage Sales Snob".......2006-03-18

I first came upon this amazing album while working as a manager in a music store.
I won't mention the name of the store, but it is in the Northeastern part of the U.S. & 6 in 10 customers is a college student.
It's one of those types of stores in which every employee makes some sort of either a fashion, or snobbishly opinionated musical statement.
In other words, everyone there was knowledgeable about music, & some made it painstakingly known that they were king or queen sh*t.

So now the question becomes how can a staff of 20-30 egomaniacal musical snobs co-exist without tearing each others lungs out?
What music could one possibly play to sate the savage Punk, Indie, Shoegaze, Brit-Pop, Electronic, Classical, Jazz, R&B, Classic Rock, Folk headz...

Well this became one of those rare cd's....

In a promo box it came, with no fluff or filler.
A soft plastic sleeve that simply said DOVES - Lost Souls & a White CD....
I was intrigued somehow, & i decided that I would use one of my 2 slots in the 10 cd disc changer to check it out.

Within the first 30 seconds it grabbed me by the chest & just never let go.
What happens normally, is that by the 2nd or 3rd track one of the other employees has a wise a@@ed comment to make..
What happened this day is that all 3 of the employees on shift came to inquire what was playing...
Not only did this happen, but everyone, myself included, wanted to replay it after it ended....

Needless to say this CD became the store favorite, & there was only one employee who ever b*tched when it was played, but he was the type if he won the lottey, would complain that he only won 6 million instead of 20 million..
Just a generally wanabee negative 22 year old Smiths fan who wore black all the time & lived with his momma..

This story is true...
If this cd could keep the peace in a store like ours where image & bullsh*t ruled the day...
If it could calm the savage sales snob.

It has the magic to earn a strong 5 from me...
Not to mention that I just love it, & will only be repeating what was said before me.

A Lost Soul.......2006-02-06

I am unbelievably happy to have found this album. The first time I heard about Doves was on MTV, sadly. It was some ad and it mentioned The Futureheads (who I already listened to), Snow Patrol (who I was quite familiar with as well), and a band I had never heard about: Doves. In a rather strange move, I went to the nearest CD store and purchased Lost Souls, with no prenotion of what music I bought. I can attest now, it was one of the wisest things I have ever done. Lost Souls is a brilliant album. The lead singer has such a deep, gorgeous voice. It is well suited with the mellow and slightly electronic songs on the album. They other singer has a sneery voice that would annoy me, but it doesn't because it is so perfect for the acoustic songs. I would describe listening to Doves as a trip, because every time I listen to Lost Souls, I feel as though I could melt away and go to a better, calmer, happier place.
My favourite track is The Cedar Room. This song moves me to so many different levels of sad. I get a very odd feeling inside me when I hear it.
All in all, buy this CD. It is very emotional and it is some of England's best.

CHEESEY SPOKEN INTERLUDES ASIDE, THIS NOX ARCANA (WHAT'S THAT?) IS PRETTY IMPRESSIVE. HOWEVER, I GET A SENSE THAT MUCH OF THIS IS ALL COMPUTERIZED ORCHESTRATION, IT DOES HALF-HEARTEDLY WHAT IT SETS OUT TO ACCOMPLISH, WHICH IS ULTIMATELY TO CREATE AN OVERWHELMING PITCH BLACK MOOD. THOUGH THIS TYPE OF THING HAS BEEN DONE MANY A TIME OVER (GLENN DANZIG'S BLACK ARIA & EERIE VON'S UNEASY LISTENING FOR EXAMPLE), THOUGH I WOULD NOT CONSIDER THIS EXCELLENT, IT'S OVERALL PRETTY SOLID. HOWEVER, IT LEAVES THE LISTENER WANTING MORE IN THE END, PROBABLY DUE TO THE FACT THAT AS SOON AS YOU FIND YOURSELF ENGROSSED IN THEIR BLANKET OF HAUNTING DRAMA, THE TUNE ABRUPTLY ENDS. First Time Was The Charmer.......2007-04-21

This was my first time to explore this "spooky" genre in music, as well as the first exposure to Nox Arcana--and, my, what a darkly seductive experience it was. I'm not quite sure what I expected. Something "Gothic" for sure--but would it be art?

It WAS art, art-full, deeply mesmerizing & very entertaining.

AND "Carnival" is technically brilliant.

One of the things I missed when CDs replaced LPs was the creativity that went into the record jackets. Most pop CDs these days offer very little for the eye--but this is not the case in Carnival of Lost Souls. A beautiful little booklet is enclosed loaded with wonderful drawings & other illustrations, as well as a Goth libretto of sorts & many other strange & curious & wonder-full things.

Obviously Nox Arcana knows how to make the Dark Side fun.

I definitely want more...

just when you think you have heard the personal best from Joseph and William, they come up with another. This concept album, is based on the book by Bradbury "Something Wicked This Way Comes". Read the book, see the movie, and then listen to this haunted soundtrack. There is always something very different at the end of every Nox Arcana album. and this one is no different. I was blown out of my seat, and I was driving down the highway at 60 mph! No more shall be given away, I cannot spoil it for others.

ok, a bit of advice (chuckle), play the cd for the first time somewhere OTHER than a car while driving.

Getting Better All The Time.......2006-11-01

"Carnival.." is a much improvement over "Transylvania" and I though Transylvania was really good.
This is great stuff to play in the background while dishing out the Halloween treats to the kids.
I'll eventually get all the Nox Arcana CDs just to complete the set. Based on what I've heard from the 3 I have, they will all be worth it to have.

Nox Arcana's best release yet.......2006-10-25

Joseph Vargo is known for his elegant contributions to gothic art and dark music over the years. Several years ago, he and William Piotrowski formed Nox Arcana and have been extremely prolific. It's a testament to both of these guys that their albums have been top of the line, and "Carnival of Lost Souls" is their best release yet. The beautiful cover art indicates the macabre contents within, both visually and musically. And at the very end of the album comes a hidden track, a rock version of "Spellbound" which has an '80's metal sound. Overall a fine album by the masters of dark, musical storytelling.

Spaccanapoli (literally "Split Naples," named for a street that bisected the city) are an outgrowth of the legendary workers' collective E' Zezi, whose sounds of revolution and struggle came strongly based in the traditional music of southern Italy. And Spaccanpoli too have the tarantella and tarrurriate as their musical foundations. It's folk music, but like the best folk through the ages, it represents the history and problems of the working classes, as in "Sant' Anastasia." Other songs deal with pollution ("Mare") and loss ("A' Ferriera"). But there's also some joy to be found in material like "O' Rinillo O' Rinello," which exhorts people to have a good time. Think of this band as a folkier, more acoustic Chumbawamba and you're getting close to the heart of what they're about. --Chris Nickson

Proof of a good song......you'll buy the entire album for it and hope some of the other songs are 1/2 as good.

Vesuvio is the song that Furio and Camilla danced to on Season 4, Episode 4 "The Weight" (The Sopranos).

It's a earthy, tribal drum, deep in your psyhe type of song that you hear for two minutes and say, I've just got to get that.

I went on the internet thinking, I will never ever find this song because I'm the only one that was mesmerized by the two minutes it played.......well great minds think a like and I wasn't the only one enchanted by this song. Many many people commented on how this raw, tribal dirge haunted them.

Why? It taps into our most primal being.

Amazing........2006-11-10

Spaccanapoli is truly wonderful (notwithstanding a certain hint of Euro-leftism that comes through in their songs), and this is one of my favorite albums. Hopefully, the group will come out with another one soon.

Monica Pinto's voice is both powerful and beautiful; the lyrics and the music together capture a feeling that will be familiar to anyone who has ever been touched by the crazy, chaotic, dysfunctional, delicious, exotic and passionate spirit of southern Italy.

A note on the lyrics-- while "Lost Souls" contains excerpts from the lyrics, you have to go the group's website to get the complete version.

Dark, Soulful, Sad, Wild and Wonderful.......2006-01-19

I can't express how great this album is, so i'm relying on short disjointed adjectives for now.

What I can say about the album is that it is powerful and sad. I had searched Amazon for seemingly forever for this album without knowing the name of the artist or song or where to begin. I was specifically looking for the song 'vesuvio' which i had heard on the HBO series Sopranos but i didn't know it's name. Thank goodness I found some lateral association with the Sopranos albums floating around on Amazon, which do *not* have these songs.

'Vesuvio' was the song they chose to elucidate the dangerous love and yearning the character Carmella Soprano had for one of the imported made-men from Italy, the translator Furio Giunta. It is an even more appropriate song as it is about mt vesuvio, a fiery volcano which is an ever-present threat of destruction to the village, a metaphor for the destruction Carmella and Furio would have for each other, should they pursue their love. The 2 tracks from this album the Sopranos used were very good choices.

Luckily, the album has translations of the lyrics in English, and I gotta tell you, it is quite dark. I found myself crying uncontrollably while listening to the songs and reading the lyrics, they are quite desperate and powerful stories. I believe theres a song about an explosion at a factory and the burial of the victims. According to the album, they are songs of protest of modernization and the struggles and sacrifices involved. Reminds me of U2's 'War' in this regard.

ENERGY, BEAUTY, LIFE..........2004-04-20

I'm a little late in reviewing this wonderful recording - it came out in 2000, another gift to music listeners from Peter Gabriel's Real World label. There's a quote on the back cover of the CD that sums up the album perfectly: `From the streets of Naples, vibrant energy, impassioned vocals and wild abandon - modern protest songs from ancient roots'. The members of Spaccanapoli were all part of a much larger musical/political group called E Zezi, formed in Naples in 1974 and involving `...more than 100 singers, instrumentalists and dancers' (description from the booklet to this CD). E Zezi was a true cooperative, taking the musical traditions of Italy's past and smelting them with the creative heat of political passion into a new type of urban folk music. Those passions - of politics and life, which are in reality intertwined so thoroughly - drive the music of Spaccanapoli with an energy that is beautiful, infectious and at times a little frightening (but what a rush!).

Naples is a city that has always embodied elements of other cultures - and it's easy to hear influences from around the Mediterranean in this music. The Roma element is particularly strong - sometimes more in sheer energy than in direct melodic or instrumental ways.

The vocals are handled by two incredible singers - Monica Pinto and Marcello Colasurdo (who also plays the tammorra, a traditional one-sided hand-held drum). Their voices are infused with a fiery power - but they are never out of control. The lyrics are all in Italian, with partial translations provided (the full translations are available on the band's website) - but not understanding much Italian didn't keep me from feeling the emotions conveyed here. The other three group members are Antonio Fraioli (violin, piano, percussion), Oscar Montalbano (acoustic guitar, bass) and Emilio De Matteo (acoustic and electric guitars). This core group of five players and singers is joined here and there by nearly twenty other fine musicians - never overloading the arrangements, always contributing just the right touch to complete the song. There are electronic keyboards in play on occasion - but for the most part, the instrumentation is acoustic, giving the recording an overall purity of sound that only adds to the power of the performances.

I have a feeling it'll be a rare occasion that this group ever performs live close enough to where I live for me to see them - but I can also tell from this recording that it would be a show I would never forget, so I'm going to keep my fingers crossed and my eyes open. In the meantime, I'd love to see additional recordings by them. It's been four years since this one - with the energy they display here, as well as the apparent commitment to their art, there's bound to be more where this one came from.

Journey through European south.......2001-07-25

This excellent album is beautiful blend of southern European (notably Napolitano) sounds supopported by strong, genuine lyrics. If you ask me today what is my favorite European band - answer is quick: Spaccanapoli.

Debut album of the year so far........2000-08-15

Of the three highly touted debut bands from England this year, (Doves, Badly Drawn Boy and Coldplay) Doves are by far the superior group. "Lost Souls" is a very good guitar album that is both passionate and soulful. Keep in mind that genuine sincerity is becoming more of a rare commodity in British rock. While there are countless groups crooning about their broken hearts and slapping on string sections like a Richard Ashcroft solo project, none of them have that intensity that can be found on "Lost Souls"

The album begins with the epic instrumental "Firesuite," a slow burner that builds into an aggressive racket. From there it's straight into one of the albums highlights, the rocky "here it Comes." The first really great moment arrives on track 4, the single "Sea Song." Like many Doves songs this has a long intro and uses the old psychedelic guitar tricks with some lovely piano.

While all the tracks from the middle album are good (title track "Lost Souls) you get the impression that Doves can do better. Alas true greatness arrives on track 7. "Melody Calls" is the name of the song and it is definitley the poppiest thing you are going to find here. Then comes more excellence in the form of single "Catch the Sun" which begins with a nice introspective line: "Everyday it comes to this/Catch the things you might have missed."

Doves continue this role with their very newest single "The Man Who Sold Everything." This is another one of the albums highlights and is also one of the most powerful songs on the record. The most intense (and best) moment on the record is the single which really caught the public eye. "The Cedar Room" is eight minutes of pure emotion. The chorus: "I tried to sleep alone, but I couldn't do it/ You could be sitting next to me and I wouldn't know it/ If I told you you was wrong, I don't remember saying it." This track really seems to sum up the raw power of the album. I have already read more than one source that claims that "The Cedar room" is the song that Noel could not write for the new Oasis album. Whoever said it is right.

"Lost Souls" is a genuinly powerful and affecting record. While other debuts by Coldplay and Badly Drawn Boy are certainly good, neither of them have the soulful energy that this record has. Debut of the year... No contest.

Where did this come from? Contender for BEST OF THE YEAR!.......2000-08-11

WOW - that is my review in one word! From the opening licks of Firesuite, "Lost Souls" weaves it's way under your skin and stays there. It's quite hard to impress me these days but The Doves have done far more than that! They made a beautiful, yet experimental, a noisey, yet tuneful disc that I can not take out of my player. I am just so happy with this disc on each additional listen, amazing! The production is interesting, the melodies are grabbing, the moods are haunting and even the artwork is ace! This was another import impulse buy and a much more rewarding one than Coldplay or even Travis last year for that matter, partly because it's so unexpected. "Lost Souls" simply puts what makes a release great and plays with every part of it along it's 12 tracks. I'm sure when the dust clears later this year, everyone will be rushing out to get this, as it will no doubtly be shortlisted on every "best of" list. (and rightfully so) HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Huge talent, shoddy production.......2000-07-24

I really like this album, I really want everyone to buy it, but I'll be objective in my review and have to put in a few downers.

Doves are the epitomy, maybe even pinacle of a long line of positive English musical influences. I will hazard a guess that they were heavily influenced by early Stone Roses, Primal Scream, Radiohead and maybe even early Oasis (not their current dross) which is why I like this album so much. However, I personally feel that poor production robbed this album of classic status. Sometimes albums (Stone Roses) can carry this with grace but I feel that Doves could have done with being tightened up a bit, perhaps a track or two shorter and moved away from that sort of almost 8-track sound quality (try listening to this through ear-phones, the volume ebbs & flows rather annoyingly). Whilst Coldplay are a currently chart-topping, Doves are playing second fiddle with an album that is for me, far superior.

Rant Over! This is a musical treat - from power pop (a bit reminiscent or Ultra Vivid Scene)of Here it Comes & Catch the Sun to the more slower and more gratifying Sea Song and A House.

Enjoy this album and hopefully I will be adding an extra star for their second if their production improves

Very promising.......2000-07-23

If you were expecting a bog standard middle of the road guitar album, i wouldn't bother buying Lost Souls. Doves are not a band in the mould of 'lets make a song with a huge chorus supported by some mediocre verses', they are truely unique. Their dance background is very evident on Lost Souls, especially in the way they build songs up effortlessly, before releasing them upon you like a bombshell- 'Rise' being the perfect example of this. It's diffiuclt to compare them to anyone on the main UK rock/indie scene at the moment. Latest single 'Catch the Sun' is as catchy as any pop record, and you'll be humming it for weeks on end after hearing it. The entire album is hypnotic, and you might as well put tape across your CD player drawer, cos after buying Lost Souls, it won't be going anywhere for a while. Truely breathtaking

Birds on the wing.......2000-07-10

This is the debut album of the year. A wonderfully crafted piece of musical genius, which comes from the relaxing 'Firesuite' to the memorable 'Here it Comes' and not forgetting the absolutely rocking 'Catch the Sun' (a contender for song of the year). But just when you thought it was safe to return to the record shop, a final burst of (tear jerking) glory appears in the form of 'A House.' If you don't own this album then you are missing out. Two words:

BUY IT.

Good Stuff.......2006-12-02

These guys really rock! Very good guitar solos, vocals, and songs. I am thankful for Mr. Frost for bringing back an old favorite, Pounding Metal. I got that song on a tape a long time ago and thought it was Lizzie Borden because that was what the tape was supposed to be. However, it turns out that was an Exciter song just thrown in on the end of the tape. Well, Seven Witches does an excellent version of it! They also do an amped up version of Bat Benetar's Hell Is For Children.

My only criticism is that there are no song credits or lyrics in the CD booklet. For all I know, the entire album is obscure cover songs except for the two tracks I recognize. However you slice it, it is still good power metal and Jack Frost and company know how to lay it down. Recommended.

Fear factory, anyone?.......2005-08-22

I'm a bargain hunter over here, and I got this CD for like 3 bucks. So, I popped it in and for, let's see... the entire album, I thought I had accadently put in a fear factory CD. Nothing is really different, except lost souls didn't pull off the whole fear factory thing the right way. They're just a wannabe band, and thats all they'll ever be.

If you are into the MachineHead - Fear Factory blend, you will dig Lost Souls. The album brings it throughout. Song for song, heavy! It may get a little repetative, but sometimes that is a good thing. In this case, it is. GO get it!!

Revelation: 71 What began in 1993 in Washington D.C. as a two man project without any expectations has become one of the most solid, unstoppable forces in heavy music today with intentions that are deadly serious. After releasing two seven-inches with it's founding members, guitarist Ken Olden and singer Mike McTernan, Damnation A.D. transformed from project to band as bassist Alex Merchlinsky, drummer Dave Bryson, and guitarist Hillel were added to the mix. Now, five years later after several more records as well as tours of Europe and North America, Damnation A.D. has come out with their most explosive record to date, Kingdom Of Lost Souls.

There are a lot of bands today that play fun music with a lighthearted feel to it that is meant to be played at parties and in the summertime with the top dow. Damnation A.D. is not one of those bands. And although Olden also plays and writes songs for old-schoolers Battery and Better Than A Thousand, Damnation A.D. couldn't be further away from the sounds of those other projects. Kingdom Of Lost Souls comes roaring at you out of the gates like a Panzer tank doing 80. Thick, dense, dark, and incredibly powerful, these ten tracks were cut at the legendary Inner Ear Studios with Don Zientara (Fugazi, Bad Brains) at the helm. If Damnation A.D.Us music is like an armored assault vehicle, then McTernan's voice is a flame thrower. Brutally honest and compelling lyrics with a vocal style that can only be described as apocalyptic. The overwhelming production, the matured, dynamic songwriting, and the nightmarish lyrics and vocals make this record a truly exhausting listening experience.

Definately one of the best albums of the year! This is the culmination of everything this band was trying to accomplish. Tight, pounding metal riffs and a heavy as hell rhythm section provide the perfect backdrop for Mike's half screamed, half spoken, soul baring vocals. Nothing on this album sounds extraneous or like filler. One amazing part change follows another, drawing you in until, after forty minutes, you regret that that the album is over. The cover of the album features a tank, and it's an appropriate analogy. After listening to this album, you will feel like that tank ran over you. And you loved every minute of it.

Great Music From Stanky VA.......1999-11-21

Ahoy hoy This is a great album! Not many bands emerge from Northern VA/Maryland and make it through and get much recognition. They have been a favorite of mine and my friends for a while. I got my CD autographed! Too good to pass up, if you like Earth Crisis, Strife, Hatebreed, hardcore stuff... you'll like these guys.

A Powerful and Impressive Third Release.......1999-09-05

This D.C.-based quintet further enhances their fierce, unmatched sound on Kingdom of Lost Souls, adding complex time signatures, massive drum sounds, and professional production (finally). Guitarist Ken Olden, who wrote the music for the entire album, holds the spotlight here with his double-riff arrangements and brilliant, unique chord voicings. The only component missing is dynamics, but once the disc begins its excruciating rampage, all musical conventions are lost in the remains of its wake. Highlights include "Turn Into Ghosts," "The Mortal," and the thunderous epic "Wait For A Day."

Good but not incredible.......1999-08-16

First of all, I'm amazed that Damnation ADs whole catalog is now on Amazon. That's incredible. This one is cataloged wrong however. The jade tree albums are attributed correctly to Damnation AD and this one to just Damnation. Searching for Damnation AD won't bring this one up.

But anyway, about the album. This album has all the production value and sense of purpose that No More Dreams of Happy Endings should have had but the songs just aren't as powerful as the songs on that album. Also, on a couple tracks the vocals are obnoxiously over-produced and in general Mike DCs voice doesn't sound as good as it has on other records. That said, this album does have a few gems. "The Mortal" sounds more like the Damnation AD that I love, it's also the only one of these songs that I've heard live. "Circles" is just amazing. If you're already a fan, this album is probably worth it, if you're just getting into Damnation AD, I'd probably go for Misericordia first.
