Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great follow up to Stupid Dream........2007-04-05

After the gigantic strides of "Stupid Dream", Porcupine Tree have successfully released a follow up that really delivers. It is like "Wish you were here" following "Dark Side of the Moon", meaning: If you loved the 1st Album, you will also love this one. The opening track "Lightbulb Sun" is a great start in the same vain as "Evenless" was on Stupid Dream and features a classic Lead solo from Steve on the guitar. My favourite tracks on this album, as with Stupid Dream, are the softer tracks (i.e. The rest will flow/She's moved on and Last Chance.. for example). The harmonies, again, are beautiful and as always, the songwriting is top-drawer. I highly recommend this album, though recent converts to Porc Tree might be disappointed after the likes of "In Absentia", "Deadwing" and the just released "Fear of a Blank Planet" which get heavier with each release. I have ALL Of Porcupine Tree's CDs, and this rates as one of my favourites. Who knows what genre of music Steve and Co. will release next time, but one thing is for certain, it will be of the highest quality.

5 out of 5 stars If You're Having Any Doubts..........2007-02-15

Doubt no further. This album is easily Porcupine Tree's most musically astonishing and listenable album for newcomers. "Lightbulb Sun" successfully combines the elements of the classic Porcupine Tree albums with that of their newly adopted mainstream sound. Coming from a fan of both classic Porcupine Tree and more recent Porcupine Tree, "Lightbulb Sun" meets all the needs that a music fan could ever hope for, and then some!

The album kicks you off with "Lightbulb Sun" and what a brilliant way to start off. Opening with a catchy acoustic line and quickly launching the listener into nostalgia of past Porcupine Tree trademarks: entrancing guitar melodies and melodic piano work. Along with the more classic Porcupine Tree sound, there is also the new catchy and more mainstream sound Porcupine Tree has adopted through melodic vocal lines. "Four Chords That Made a Million," embodies the classic image of psychadelic rock through the strange, yet beautifully distorted guitar riff. After emerging from the more recognizable aesthetics Porcupine Tree usually exemplifies, "Shesmovedon" introduces to the listener, just how universally appealing and emotional Porcupine Tree can get, containing a tear-jerking guitar solo. Another spotlight track, "The Rest Will Flow," uses each instrument to its fullest potential; each instrument adds a different layer to the song that builds up to an extremely epic outro. One more track worth mentioning is the thirteen minute trip "Russia on Ice." This track is easily the most reminicent of the early Porcupine Tree days with soothing ambience and stellar majesty.

This album is easily my most prized Porcupine Tree album. If you're a fan of beautiful and thought-provoking music, this is the album for you! And as I mentioned before, this album is Porcupine Tree's paramount piece (I should mention it is VERY closely followed by "Stupid Dream"). If you are at all considering buying this, I hope I helped convince you.

5 out of 5 stars What an Awesome CD!.......2006-04-04

I have been listening to the mass amount of progressive rock bands over the past 6 months, researching them on here, and then giving their cds a try. The quality of music in this genre is just ridiculous, and coming across new artists and albums is very enjoyable to me.

That being said, Porcupine Tree is by far the BEST band that remains unknown to the US market. I hate the radio for that reason. Why these guys arent international superstars just completely blows my mind. If this isnt music for everyone than I dont know what is.

I have all of their CDs now, with the exception of Stupid Dream, which is the last to collect, and Lightbulb Sun is without a doubt my favorite of the collection. There is just simply no songs on the entire CD that arent amazing. If you enjoy this band or good music in general, GET THIS CD! Now!

5 out of 5 stars GOING TO BE REMASTERED AND RE-RELEASED.......2004-08-17

Both Lightbulb Sun and Stupid Dream are going to be remastered and re-released in 2005. PT assures that "at least one of them, if not both, will receive a DVD-Audio 5.1 surround mix format in addition to the normal remastered CD edition".
This is a fantasatic CD. Not quite as good as Stupid Dream or In Absentia but a definite must have. So just wait a while until they are re-released instead of spending ridiculous amounts for this CD.

4 out of 5 stars very good final independent release.......2004-07-12

Don't get me wrong, I like this album, but maybe I was spoiled by Stupid Dream and Signify and the immediate impact they both had on me, and as a result Lightbulb Sun was somewhat of a letdown. But it's still well-produced and worth purchasing once it gets re-released.

Songs such as the title track, Four Chords That Made a Million, and show that Steven Wilson can write shorter well-produced songs. Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycles is an interesting use of banjo, and as others have said an eerie use of Heaven's Gate cult material. The Rest Will Flow is a nice little track that uses strings, and shows the group is willing to experiment. PT still returns to his roots with more epic songs like Hatesong and Russia On Ice. The album also has more harder sounds than the last which seems to be the progression of the group.

It's still a nice album that I'm sure will grow on me more as time passes, and a worthy final independent release and swan song for drummer Chris Maitland.
