Geronimo, the follow-up to Shannon McNally's intoxicating 2002 debut,
Jukebox Sparrows, follows the same rootsy pop/R&B/folk/alt-country path, yet goes the distance to prove that the transplanted New Yorker, now living in New Orleans and soaking up the bayou blues, is more than just a Sheryl Crow/Bonnie Raitt clone. Her songwriting--deft, atmospheric, and loaded with memorable lines ("Listening for the sound of my last hope hitting the ground")--settles mainly on the searing emotional pain of romantic dissolution, yet always offers enough irony and universal touchstones (e.g., running into an old lover by chance) to win over even the most casual listener. She hits her stride on the title cut, which uses the sad, shameful defeat of the Native Americans as the subtheme to a well-fought battle of love. As on her debut, McNally rarely veers out of a mid-tempo groove, and producer Charlie Sexton, who keeps things spare but interesting (like steel drum accents on "Lovin' in My Baby's Eyes"), is right to encourage only the one overt rocker, "The Hard Way," and to simply let the artist be herself. McNally is so irresistibly winsome, sexy, seductive, and vulnerable that, chances are, you'll be ready to move in by the end of the opening track.

A Beautiful Surprise.......2006-03-11
I am not a huge fan of pop country music, but this album has a sweet, gentle alt flavor that touches the pop without relying on it (leaning a little too hard on the legend of Lucinda Williams, but not to the point of offending). With folky albums, I am always hoping for the music to conjure strong images, memories, and emotions through the inspired layering of twangy instrumentals and bold lyricism. I would definitely say this album delivers. The first song "The Worst Part of a Broken Heart" is anthemic for the little broken-hearted country girl in all of us. "She looked up at her sister and said I don't hear the bells," she sings, and then in soft, aching disappointment she follows with "Aren't they supposed to ring?...Aren't they supposed to sound?" This song, like some of the others, delivered a sort of confessional wit that suprised me.
There are some real gems, I would consider "Beautiful and Strange" and "In the Name of Us, Honey" worth several repeated listens. They're written with willful melodic ascension in mind, something that I look for in a great song. On that note, skip track two - not so great. Overall, a nice album.
She had me at hello!.......2006-01-30
I was fortunate enough to catch Ms. McNally (opening up for Son Volt) at the Music Farm in Charleston and was blown away. It was just Shannon with her acoustic guitar and a gifted keyboardist, but they were captivating. She possesses a gorgeous voice that truly reflects past journeys of hope, hardship, lost love, and vulnerable soul searching. She is ripe to break out and certainly deserves to be heard by the massess. If you have a chance to see her live I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it. I can guarantee that you won't ever regret it.
Entertaining, but not life changing.......2005-08-08
For me, this was a solid and entertaining piece of work. The song writing, vocals, arrangements and production are all very good indeed. Shannon McNally has a wonderful voice; it's open, warm, communicative, exciting, and strong, with just enough rawness in the right places. At times, the vocals were reminiscent of Joan Osborne, and that can hardly be a bad thing. The overall sound seems to be based on roots, rock, country, or folk, with different contributions depending on the song. If you like Tift Merritt then I see no reason at all why you won't like this. To my mind, this CD is perhaps slightly better than Tambourine, but that's just a opinion. I guess Geronimo isn't going to change my life, but it does provide a solid slice of entertainment and I recommend you buy it.

Shannon McNally grew up in Long Island but moved around the country, lived in California, and is now living in New Orleans. She released her first solo record, Jukebox Sparrows, a few years ago. The songs are whiskey stained with slide guitars running wild. Her soulful songs blend rock and country into a new stew. Shannon has a dynamic voice and a sexy presence. Now she is back with a new album on a new label. She is getting better as a songwriter. With Geronimo she proves that her first album was no fluke. This time she works with Charlie Sexton. The results are a pretty cool album. You should check it out.
An unexpected surprise.......2005-08-03
I actually went on Amazon to buy Brandi Carlisle's new CD, and this was recommended. I ended up liking it even better than the one I intended to buy. She's like a mix between Sarah Mclahclan and good country singer, like Martina McBride or Gretchen Wilson. One of my favorite CD's now.

Diz is how is suppost to be done..........2007-05-28
Listing to beatz, rhyme & overall the whole (...) album by Mic geronimo's "The natural" simply sickness...These little club rappers cannot on their best dayz touch this album. Gay unit, dipset, lil john, bowwow, so on and so forth! Destroying hip hop. Anyways if you dont own this album by now ?Get it and learn about true hip hop* leave the commercial rap alone.
Wastelands!!!.......2006-08-29
Master I.C. was my senior year and while under the influence was the best thing to happen to my high. On a serious note, YES this is a unrecognized classic. Interludes were funny and "real." If you love this album, check out Royal Flush's "G.M."
Dope ish!!!.......2006-05-12
Now people consider this ol' school. I remember when this joint came out "Ish is real" and "Masta I.C." were in the deck in heavy rotation. This was when nobody knew Irv Gotti, Ja Rule, DMX or Jay-Z and they were all a part of this LP. Unfortunately, Mic Geronimo never got the credit that his counterparts did, but I honestly think his 1st LP was better than the other artist's cataloge. (Except Jay-Z)
This LP will make you want to get a pair of Tims and represent. There's only a couple of tracks that make the LP a little bumpy, Mic's attempt at making a radio/R&B track. But all n' all a dope LP!!!
But, if you did dig those R&B joints, cop his 2nd LP and if you thought those tracks were wack, avoid his 2nd LP like the plague.
One of the most slept on since Johnny O.C........2005-10-14
When I first heard this CD I remember thinking how much it was like ILLMATIC with its classic production courtesy of buckwild and smooth lyrics Geronimo held it down on this one. The music is very remiscent of NAS 1995 debut and has that Gritty NY ghetto feel to it if you are a fan of NY Hiphop you will love this. geronimos lyrics while not the best sound alot like NAS and many other NY rappers. I think the thing that doomed this release and didnt give it the classic status of albums such as Illmatic is the fact that it was released around the same time as Illmatic and geronimo didnt have any backing by a major label to promote this masterpiece of an album. So it goes to show you can have all the talent in the world and still go completely unoticed for years by the general public. Mic G started to fall off after this one I think he needs to get with BUCKWILD, DA BEAT MINERZ, or 9TH WONDER and bring us another album like this one. Classic, Masterpiece, Greatest of all time, these words dont even begin to describe what this album has in store for you. 5 MICS
The Natural!!!.......2005-07-26
Slept on Classic!!! check it out for yourself. If anything, pick it up for the title track its gold!

Product Description
Murphey, who is best-known today for his deep-rooted boosterism of cowboy culture, started his recording career with the short-lived Lewis And Clarke Expedition, which cut one album for the Colgems label back in the mid-60s. It was there that his songwriting talent was brought to the attention of labelmate Mike Nesmith, who picked up his What Am I Doing Hangin Round? and cut a version with the Monkees.
After Lewis and Clarke folded their tents, Murphey moved from Los Angeles back to his native Texas, at which time he was signed as a solo artist by A&M Records. His first album for the label, Geronimos Cadillac, wasnt a giant smash (it grazed the lower reaches of the Billboard album chart), but it gained him the notice of his peers. The title track has since been recorded by the likes of Hoyt Axton and Johnny Rivers, and the Kinks Ray Davies even produced a version of it with Brit singer Claire Hamill.
Murphey only recorded a pair of albums for A&M before moving to Epic for his commercial breakout (the song Wildfire), but all the elements were in place, even at this early stage, for the singer-songwriters stardom. The album was produced by Bob Johnston, who gained fame for his work with Simon & Garfunkel, Dylan and Johnny Cash, among others.
Select Direct Releases feature original LP artwork reconfigured to an oversized heavy board minijacket wrapped with an iridescent stock, includes a translucent sleeve to protect the CD. Each jacket is gold foil stamped with a limited edition sequential number.
Customer Reviews:
A great beginning for Murphey.......2007-07-11
I honestly did not know "Geronimo's Cadillac" was his song; I first heard it from Bill Miller on his Spirit Songs: The Best of anthology CD. Now I feel like I want to hear every version I can find to see how they compare to MMM's original. This song earned him an honorary membership in the Sioux Nation for its pointed commentary on the treatment of the Indian.
The album, 12 tracks, is a true classic of country-rock, but unfortunately was ignored in the face of higher-visibility records like the Flying Burrito Brothers' Gilded Palace of Sin, the first two Eagles albums, and Poco's output for Epic (those records eclipsed themselves by other bands and their records). It's a limited edition, just 5000 copies, from Hip-O Select, and the packaging is lovely; a miniature gatefold LP jacket, all of the credits and artwork from the original, and even the CD itself gets an inner sleeve, as well as A&M's label design from the mid '70s. There's really not a bad track on this one, and I highly recommend you pick it up before it goes out of print. (Hip-O Select is Universal's answer to Rhino Handmade, reissuing all sorts of neat recordings that may no longer be available once the limited run is sold out.)

The Austin Years.......2006-11-15
This and Cosmic Cowboy Souvenir are very fine examples of what was happening in Austin, TX during the early seventies. Murphey eventually moved on to a slicker sound, but these two are down-to-earth jewels.
The sticker on the covers say they were culled from the original master tapes, but I highly doubt that. These discs lack the qualities that are evidence of such a claim - but that won't be a problem for the average buyer - just for the audiophile who buys every disc with the highest of hopes.
Thank You, It's about time!.......2004-08-24
What can I say except this is great, I had just about given up hope of ever hearing these great songs on a CD. Believe me the old albums just weren't made to last this long. These songs hold a lot of old memories for me and bring back some vivid road trip visions of the Southwest. Thank you, Raven Records, please bring back some more of Michaels early albums. Too many people know him only from his recent cowboy work and songs like Wildfire and Whats Forever For. These are great songs but he had so many wonderful pure, bare, and uncluttered songs from his early years that deserve hearing. To me, he is to the southwest what John Denver was to the Rockies, only a little less polished. If you love songs about nature, wanderlust, the road, and cowboys without the glitz of modern country give this a try. Thanks again, I feel like I've found an old friend.

One of the BEST MCs You never heard of.......2007-03-29
Everyone has there typical list of the best MCs: Biggie, Rakim, Pac, Kool G Rap, Redman, Jay, Nas etc.. But for whatever reason the whole world seems to have slept on MIC G. Lyrically he can match up with anyone of the names listed above. Almost every line has a double meaning that makes his sh** on another level. The best way to describe his style is a smooth gangster Rakim. His delivery may seem at first to be a typical East Coast talking style like Nas, Jay, Jada, but deeper listening proves otherwise. Every bar is precise, vicious and clear. This is an ideal CD to blaze to because it makes you think and he delves into a lot of Real Sh**, that real N** can relate to. This review is detailed so people can STOP SLEEPING.
Most people lose their edge with age, but he is probably hungrier than he was on 'The Natural'. This is what his second album could have been if he wasn't dealin wit puff, but at the time puff was that dude if you was trying to get paid. Every track is a straight BANGER except the one with black child, tah..that one is aight. I played the whole thing straight last night when I was elevated and it is some of the realest sh** I heard in years. I hope yall niguz will reconize. Get this Sh**, its a classic.
Don't Travel This Road!.......2006-01-10
Just as the title of the implies it's a "long road back" for Mic Geronimo and the listener. Humdrum beats and wannabe gangster tales plague this cd. To add insult to injury Ja Rule jumps on a track to lend a pity ryhme for an ole friend.
Hopefully one day Mic will find the right road. Until then please save you cash.
Mic Geronimo- Long Road Back.......2004-02-18
Last year after a six year hiatus Mic Geronimo quietly dropped his third album "Long Road Back" (2003). Throughout most of his career he has been a slept on MC, and it looks like things are not changing in that department. After the intro, Mic gets thing started with the fastpaced "Keep it Hot", "M.I.C." follows a track which has children singing a chorus of Mic's name. Those tracks are okay but not really my taste, they seem like the kind of cuts an MC makes for the radio. Thankfully the rest of the album has Mic Geronimo on point, feeling the heavy rock based "Pusher" a track that simply bangs and another standout is "Ever be the Same". Mic Geronimo comes across ill on a premium track for the streets called "Gone". Laidback "Gangsta" flows through nicely. Then Mic Geronimo collabrates with R & B singer Tyrese on an excellent track called "I'm Alive", to say this track goes deep would be an understatement, Mic's introspective reflective lyrics about his life, matched with Tyrese's soulful vocals, makes this one of the best tracks of its kind that I have heard in some time. I like how Mic Geronimo rhymes over rock beats, the pounding "All Said and Done" is a good example of that. "Rebellious" is decent, though I prefer the remixed version called "Fly High", a banging track which benefits from a surprisingly hungry sounding Ja Rule. Mic comes across raw on "Up Now" and lyrically murders with "Killed a Man". Mic Geronimo clearly shows that he can still deliver memorable and refreshing music with "Long Road Back". Recommend checking out this release, it does not deserve to be this badly slept on. 3.5.

4.5 stars for Mic Geronimo's 2nd album.......2007-06-07
I remember when "Nothin Move But The Money" first came out, I was in the 10th grade and it was a hot song, now 10 years later I picked up the album again and I forgot how good it really was. A slept on and under rated MC with a smooth flow, he delivers a very tighht album. Though rather short, at only 12 songs, not one is bad, in fact I'd say 1 is ok, the rest are good, with a few being real good and 2 are almost classics. Guests are minimal as well (rapping on 2 songs and doin the hook on 3) , and quite a few grew into some of the bigger names in rap shortly after this album dropped (Jay-Z, LOX, DMX, Ja Rule, and another great but under rated rapper, Tragedy Khadafi). Production is great on almost every song and handled by some bigger names. Irv Gotti & Lil Rob did 2 songs, Puff Daddy, Pete Rock, Buckwild, Prestige, Legendary Traxter, Havoc, K-Def, P & Time, Chrin Lange, Prince Kasan all do 1 song. A must have rap album from an era where rap was still about lyrics and not bling bling and women.

(3+half stars) VENDETTA......return of the natural........2006-05-30
After getting his debut album "the natural" wayback in the day when it 1st came out i was hit with 2 assumptions. 1)That album was laced with alotta hit records and 2)He wouldnt be able to recreate it cuz there were alotta fillers on the debut also so i thought he'd used up whatever he had in the tank in the 1st time round. How wrong i was+unfortunately i slept on this until very recently when i decided to cop it on the cheap. It starts off with 1 of the crossover aimed tracks "nothin move but the money" which was produced by PUFFY and genuinely wasnt as bad as i thought it wouldve been because MIC tears it down with some lovely wordplay. Next is the title track "vendetta", a MOBB DEEP sounding track were Mic flips some warnings to mc's. Then ironically comes "survival" produced by HAVOC from Mobb Deep, a jazzy rugged joint where Mic sounds in his element. Next is the IRV GOTTI produced "life n'lessons", a crossover type joint with a lovely laidback feel to it where Mic is in storytelling mode describing his life. The next joint is a K-DEF (Marly Marl's partner) produced heatrock, guaranteed to make you nod ya head. The next track "street life" is very much a radio filler and "be like mic" has a repetitive boring beat despite some of Mic's best rhyming. Then there's a track from PETE ROCK which i was not expecing at all called "unstoppable" and thats exactly what it is once you put it in your deck. A bone crunching bassline+beat driven track with a delicate piano rift with a touch of jazz mixed with Mic's stellar flow. Then there's 3 reletively forgettable tracks in "single life" (cr*p), "things aint what they used to be" and "how you been?". All 3 have a more r+b influenced vibe rather than a harder rugged edge Mic sonds better on. Finally we're giving "usual suspects" a posse cut with DMX, the LOX and Carl Thomas with a badboy feel. After hearing 2 of his 3 albums i get the impression that this cat makes albums with a handful of excellent str8 up real hiphop tracks mixed with a handful of more laidback radio/r'n'b tracks that kind of take abit away from it. Well worth coping for the variety of the tracks.
I wasnt expecting this.......2005-12-08
I bought this in a Pawn shop and when I lisened 2 it I was like why was this in a pawn shop? This is a good album, but I 4got some people dont know what true hiphop is, like I said true hiphop has feeling and Vendetta does have that feeling! so get this if u r a fan of true hiphop!
a nice surprise .......2005-09-30
i will admit I had not heard any of mic gs stuff but one day I was at the local record store and saw this and decided to listen it turned out to be a very enjoyable listen. Mic g is a very talented lyricist and while his lyrics are not always the best his flow is great and his words are the truth. the beats are dope although sometimes the cheese factor creeps in to the CD but this is forgivable actually most of the album works very well considering that almost all of it was done with a sequencer type device there are a few vinyl samples here and there but for the most part these are electronic sounds not like techno or anything like that but it still works. if you enjoy modern underground Hiphop with a few gangsta touches you will probaly enjoy this also check out Mic G THE NATURAL it is a better album than this 4 MICS
Excellent Album.......2005-08-30
Mic Geronimo did an excellent job with this album. Unfortunately, due to the lack of promotion and marketing, this album didn't sold very well. The best songs on the album are "Usual Suspects", "Unstoppable", and "Street Life". Overall, this is a true gem and it always seems that the truly talented get push aside while the untalented ones (Such as Nelly, Lloyd Banks, and Jermaine Dupri) get all the fame and fortune. In conclusion, if you love East Coast Rap, you need get a copy of this, you won't be disappointed.
