Innovative and eclectic.......2006-10-27

Despite the lack of public acceptance of Folklore, Nelly Furtado's second album released three years ago, that doesn't discount it from having its moments. The use of multi-cultural instruments here is insane--and Furtado sounds her nasally best throughout every track. The stellar "One-Trick Pony" has a great message about not following the crowd and breezes into the introspective "Powerless." Sure, despite these two amazing songs there isn't much left on Folklore that makes for single material...but don't let that fact detract from the disc. So despite its flaws the musical introspection and innovative use of instruments make Furtado's second effort far superior to any other eclectic album in its category.

Nelly's best album.......2006-09-16

This is definitely Nelly Furtado's most mature, most musically even, and best album. Whoa, Nelly! got me hooked, and with Folklore she did not disappoint. Whoa, Nelly! and Folklore were like nothing I had ever heard before musically, and each album does a great job of painting pictures of how life is. Nelly's genius and willingness to blend music from different cultures and genres is shown through these two albums for sure, but Folklore especially. You wouldn't expect it to work the way it does, but the results are fantastic. This is an album not to be missed!

"Folklore" Really Is A Great Album!.......2006-09-01

All of Nelly Furtado's albums had certain strengths to them. Her debut album "Whoa, Nelly!" was loaded with fresh ideas & spiritual exploration. Her third album "Loose" had its youthful, exuberant energy. The strength in her second album, "Folklore", lies in its uncompromising artistry and autobiographical feel.

Obviously, highlights are abundant on this album, most notably "Try", a beautiful guitar ballad about doing the best she can with herself and her life while everyone around her judges with cold, prying eyes. Lyrical prominence is not only found on the aforementioned cut, but also the uplifting folk-pop of lead single "Powerless" -an ode to being yourself & not worrying about everyone else's perceptions of you-, the anthemic, life-inspiring "Forca" & the emotionally engaging "Explode", a powerful guitar ballad about a female teenager's painful hardships with guitar riffs much more louder & powerful to suit the song's passionately dramatic mood. "Picture Perfect", my personal favourite, is also a highlight, despite the fact that around 25-50% of the song's profound lyrics lack universal appeal. The light guitars & fluttery pianos perfectly suit the aforementioned song's vibe, and Nelly Furtado seriously adds some enormous passion in the somewhat-repetitive chorus.

No matter how you look at any of these tracks, "Folklore" is another Pop classic from Nelly Furtado. While this album may lack some universal appeal compared to her other 2 albums, it's no wonder people consider this album her best work. Please buy it, as well as any other albums Nelly Furtado wishes to grace us with in the future. 5 STARS!

I am really surprised when people say that this CD had a low sales record. I absolutely love it. I dont have her first cd but between Folklore and Loose (also good) I prefer Folklore.

Extremely disappointing.......2007-06-26

I bought two of Blackmore Night's CDs on the strength of the one instrumental I heard on NPR- "Nur Eine Nacht". It was haunting, exquisite, the kind of music you never tire of listening to. Unfortunately almost all the other melodies on these tracks are vocals and the voice doesn't work with the music. For example, "Ivory Tower" is the kind of song that would surely be a blockbluster hit along the lines of Carmina Burana or Enya's medieval chant --it has that magnificence to the first couple of bars. But then the female voice comes in and the mood is busted. In addition, the lyrics are really bad. I don't know if it's on this CD or the other one I bought, but one of the beautiful melodies is ruined by the voice belting out something about "then you came along and there's color where there was black and white; movies where there was night." Really annoying. Without the voice and the lyrics, I am convinced the stunning melodies of Blackmore's Night would speak for themselves and shoot to the top of the charts.

A Blackmore's Night classic.

Most of the highlights from the Castles and Dreams DVD are here, Candace's vocals are strong and the guitar work is smooth. There is real feeling to many of the tracks.

The title track is a standout, and "All for One" makes a good sing along when caught in traffic. Go and buy it!

Chilling..........2006-09-14

Brilliant. This is Blackmore at his best. His most inspired work to date. "Cartouche", "Loreley" and "All for One" are among his classics. So are "Queen for a Day", "Dandelion Wine", "Way to Mandalay", "3 Black Crows" and the title track. Masterpieces all. One day, this CD (along with the DVD) will be looked back upon as the crowning achievement in the career of Blackmore's Night.

My only negative comment would be to leave off the cheap covers of Joan Baez and Jethro Tull. They pale in comparison to the originals. Particularly on "Rainbow Blues". On the original, Ian sings like his life depends on it. Here, the vocals fall somewhere under the rainbow.

This is the first of the Blackmore's Night records I have listened to, but I know more or less everything Blackmore and the various incarnations of Deep Purple, Rainbow and earlier stuff he did. Blackmore is still a fine guitar player, and the Perfect Strangers style is here again, but in a medievel guise. The lyrics aren't wonderful (they don't often pass the read-it-out-loud test) but the music is stunningly well-produced, the vocals are beautiful, and a couple of songs are just about perfect in every way, the Diamonds & Rust cover being the best. The great thing about Ritchie Blackmore is that he usually outclasses faster guitar players by playing just the right notes, and he does it here again. Nice.

The Caribbean is home to a string of tourism-friendly island nations and some of the world's most amazing music. Irresistible dance music.......2001-06-21

This is a wonderful album that will put you in a dancing mood. An instant pick-u-up. This is zouk, soca and reggae music from Martinique, Barbados, Haiti and Jamaica. This album, like most of the Putumayo releases, not only has well known artists such as Bunny Wailer and Arrow, but also little known artists as well. It is a great place to begin for someone who wishes to explore Caribbean music. Every song on here is irresistible and will make you wish you were in the Caribbean. The 15 page booklet contains information on each artist and the song they perform.

This collection of old-time social and instrumental string-band music spotlights instrumental prowess. Old-time music features playing styles that pre-date bluegrass, emerging from the string band tradition stretching back to the early years of United States history. Both African-American and Anglo-American ingredients are at its core, the banjo having African origins, the fiddle European. Some of the most revered sources of old-time roots music-Dock Boggs, Roscoe Holcomb, Wade Ward, Tommy Jarrell, and more-are heard playing in their original styles. The Grateful Dead's cover of "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down" and Bob Dylan's rendition of Clarence Ashley's "Little Sadie" clearly attest to the continuing influence of these songs. Mountain music magic.......2007-01-07

Here's another excellent compilation of material that originally appeared on various Folkways albums recorded during the last four decades of the twentieth century, all featuring old-timey country string band performances. The Red Clay Ramblers, The New Lost City Ramblers, Slim and Kirk McGhee, Doc Watson, Mike Seeger, and Clarence Ashley are just a few of the artists on this CD, and fiddles, banjos, and guitars are the instruments of choice. Whether it's Wade Wards wonderful banjo picking on the solo CHILLY WINDS, Mike Seeger's fiddle on BONAPARTE'S RETREAT, or the jubilant singing of Eric Davidson with the Iron Mountain String Band on SUGAR HILL, the music is rich in tradition and delightful to hear. Roots music fans will certainly love this CD, but so will anyone who enjoys old-time music from the southern mountains played to perfection. A most infectious CD, well worth acquiring.

A Great Mix of Old-Time Music.......2005-10-10

This CD contains a superb selection of old-time string music and vocals from an era that currently seems to be overlooked by the country-western crowd, and, to a certain extent,even the bluegrass affcionados. Some of the recordings in the mix are obviously dated and not the highest quality, but these are countered by crystal-clear performances by such greats as the New Lost City Ramblers, Mike Seeger, George Pegram, the Spare Change Boys, Mother Maybelle Carter and Doc Watson. This CD contains fiddle tunes, waltzes, cloggin' tunes, spirituals, instrumentals and vocals that are pure and totally acoustic. I love putting this CD in my truck, rolling down the windows, opening the moon roof, and cranking up the volume, drowning out the hip-hop coming from the hoopdies in the other lane. It's a fantastic selection.

mountain music at its peak.......2003-05-11

In this, the fourth of a series of collections culled from Smithsonian Folkways' massive archives, the focus is on the deep mountain music of masters famous and obscure, and the quality is uniformly high. Another plus is Jeff Place's excellent liner notes, which include informative annotations to each song or tune and performance. All told, this is the sort of thing that ought to make any devotee of Southern roots sounds very, very happy.

The performances come from both rural and revival artists, but the difference is academic, and the two meld into a seamless whole. Inevitably, a few songs are old, albeit never unwelcome, reliables, such as Dock Boggs's "Country Blues" and Clarence Ashley's "Little Sadie," but there are plenty of surprises, too. One has Maybelle Carter and Sara Carter Bayes reunited in the 1960s to do, interestingly, a song associated with the Delmore Brothers. The wonderful late-1960s LP -- never reissued in its entirety as a CD -- that Cousin Emmy recorded with the New Lost City Ramblers is tapped for an energetic, assured rendition of "Bowling Green" (also memorably sung elsewhere by the revivalist duo the Kossoy Sisters, and not to be confused with the Everly Brothers song of the same name). Roscoe Holcomb's "Trouble in Mind" is almost disorienting in its intensity, transforming a familiar song into something else entirely. There's Wade Ward's rocking banjo instrumental "Chilly Winds" (aka "Going Down This Road Feeling Bad") and Etta Baker and Cora Phillips's gorgeous banjo/guitar duet "Jaybird March." And there's everything else, too. If you're looking for mountain music at its peak, Smithsonian Folkways has -- as usual -- brought you there.

Absolutely essential.......2004-10-06

This is a marvelous collection. Along with "High Atmosphere", I consider it essential to orient you to the way the music really sounded. Most people come to Old Time music from some place else...bluegrass, country, or one of the great modern oddities like Old Crow Medicine Show or The Bad Livers. Perhaps you got the bug from "Oh Brother Where Art Thou". Well, you're on the right path with this very big 2 CD collection that not only has achingly beautiful a'capella balads, red hot fiddling, and some really phenomenal banjo work, but also haunting church shape note singing. Get "High Atmosphere" as well, and once you've absorbed them, branch out from there.

The hills were alive!.......2003-03-16

Having just reviewed another of John Cohen's excellent collections (High Atmosphere) yesterday, this seemed like a natural choice for today. This was recorded in 1959.

Obviously the biggest "star" here is Roscoe Holcomb. He is the one person on this 2-disc set who is the most well-known to the largest number of people, but this is by no means a one-man collection. In fact, I don't even consider Roscoe to be the best musician present here. For the life of me I still cannot figure out why Bill Cornett's name isn't thrown around as "one of the greats". His voice and banjo playing, particularly on Pretty Polly, Old Reuben, Born In Kentucky, Sweet Willie, etc... just knock me out. Born In Kentucky being a variant of the more well-known tune, Dark Holler.

J.D. Cornett has a fine solo-vocal version of Spring of '65, and you do indeed get some fine stuff from Roscoe here in case he is your main focus. From bits of Jack-A-Roe to one of his "I made it myself" tunes where he then lifts an entire lyric from a Blind Lemon Jefferson tune, though neither he nor the liner-notes make mention of this. Plus, I will take Roscoe's Wayfaring Stranger over Bill Monroe's any day of the week. All in all, it's good stuff!

Moving on, I personally am not too much for the sets of church tunes, aside from Clap & Shout on disc two. However, there are alot of jewels in the sand of disc two. The highlights of disc two, for me, come in the form of Granville Bowlin's segment, Mrs. Sams solo-vocal Wagoners Lad, James Crase's various fiddle tunes, and Lee Sexton's solo banjo St. Louis Blues and his Pretty Polly that is rather closely related to Bill Cornett's but not as powerful. I just love Mrs. Sams' voice. Everyone has their own aesthetic of what is good and what isn't, and for me, Mrs. Sams is just exactly what a wise old female mountain singer should sound like.

There is such a richness and rugged individuality to all these performances that it just breaks your heart to know that for the most part, these traditions are gone. At least we were lucky enough to have someone like John Cohen roaming the hills and making these priceless recordings for all of us.

This CD set takes you into a world of simple but hard labor, soul crushing poverty and soul liberating music. Its historically and musically important. A must for banjo players who have an interest in the evolution of how the instrument is played.

I knew of Ritchie Blackmore when he was in Deep Purple and Rainbow, but this side of him is unbelievably awesome. He formed a band with his girlfriend, Candice Night. I would call it Classical and Celtic flavored music. Candice has a beautiful voice, and Ritchie plays classical guitar with flawless picking that complements her voice.

This c.d. is all about romance, but not the gushy, typical romance. Most of the songs on here are about missing the one you love. The singing is really good, but the music is also interesting with intricate guitar work from Mr. Blackmore.

It is the perfect music for me to write my books to. I especially love "Ghost of a Rose." This song has an ethereal melody, and words about longing and separation that have inspired a short story inside of me. If you like Loreena McKennitt, Enya or Celtic music, you might like this.

Different, certainly, but never better. I have been a fan of Blackmore for a long time. His work with Rainbow and Deep Purple has inspired countless other musicians. That being said, I was not prepared at all for Blackmore's Night. I happened across Blackmore's Night cds at a local store but for a year or so I never bought one. What a mistake.

Finally I decided to check one out. I chose "Beyond The Sunset" and I dare say that it is the best purchase I have made at any time in my life. The music is hauntingly beautiful. Once hearing it you will never forget it..and it will leave you wanting to hear more.

Hitting the Mother Lode on First Try!.......2005-09-30

Can you imagine going gold digging for the first time? You would not expect to hit the mother of all gold mines on your first dig. Well that's what I believe I found when I experienced my first listen to this album. (I call it an Album because CD seems to be a cheap description of this masterpiece). Let me explain. I have been a Beatles fan since the 60's, and then I became a hard rock fan in the early 70's when I heard Deep Purple. I have been stuck on these types of music for years. Then about one year ago, I purchased this CD, only because of being a Ritchie Blackmore fan. I did know that I was not going to hear Deep Purple music and I thought that, "I'll probably have to listen to this several times to let it grow on me". I was wrong. The first song, (Once in a Million Years) was interesting, but when I heard (Still Remember You and Ghost of a Rose), I was hooked. I've never been down this road before musically, it was different, but it was good. Then I watched the DVD that came with the album, I was mesmerized. Candice Night is a lovely person and her voice can relax and sooth your mind. (I can't disagree with most descriptions that she is an angel). The backup singers are lovely as well. Upon watching the DVD, I also noticed an atmosphere of brotherhood and good spirits that flows throughout the audience. You can tell that there are no fights going to break out in this crowd.

I've been lucky in my life. I was not around when Chuck Berry invented rock and roll, nor was I around when Elvis started up, but I was around when The Beatles recreated music (several times), when Deep Purple created hard rock (Don't call it Metal), and now I get to hear this wonderful mixture of Renaissance oriented blend of everything. Like I said in the title above, I hit gold on my first time out to listening to something totally different than I was used to hearing.

In closing, if you would have liked to watch Picasso paint a masterpiece, then the only thing that I can think of that might be relatively close, is to watch Blackmore play the guitar.

Beyond description..........2005-09-25

This album is simply beyond description. I had never really heard much of Black More's Night (BMN) before, but I have to tell you, this has become an instant favourite in my CD collection. This is a TWO disc set (I don't know why but I didn't get the Christmas songs other people were mentioning in their reviews, although in the info of the page it doesn't say that it comes, BUU), of recopilation of BMN best songs produced till the date of this release. One is a CD with 14 songs and the other one is a DVD (which I think by itself is worth the purchase, a little short but great nonetheless),with 5 songs of a concert that was played in a great location (I'm not telling you since I'd ruin it for you).

I think that Candice Night's voice is one of the best I've heard in my entire life, some people compare her to an angel, but I think an angel isn't a match for her voice (and she is REALLY pretty too...).

Ritchie Blackmore really knows how to play a guitar well, I was quite impressed with most of the solos the songs have, they're quite good.

Overall, this CD should not miss in your collection, since it's perfect and you're getting a lot for what you're paying for.

Whistling in the wind like a ghost in the desert, 16 Horsepower's Folklore is a grave, brooding piece of dark theater. Outside of occasional relief in the form of a loose French waltz finale and the natural rockabilly songwriting touch of David Eugene Edwards, the music here is akin to a bleak ride to a dusty crossroads where the devil awaits. Reminiscent of the rustic cacophony that Grant Lee Buffalo brought to Mighty Joe Moon, or Nick Cave's desolate wasteland elegies, Folklore leaves behind the last of the band's alt-country tics. The flat, yearning tones of Edwards's singing combines with a spare banjo on tracks like "Alone and Forsaken" before "Single Girl" picks up the tempo with a bouncy bass line and a folksy chorus. But the mood is short-lived, as "Sinnerman" and the bleak, brilliant "Horse Head Fiddle" reestablish the album's desolate, hypnotic trance. Folklore's haunted melodies and mythic inspirations have a frightening intensity that turns this short set (just over 37 minutes) into an unforgettable experience. --Matthew Cooke

Pure tribute to a culture and a sound that has more character than modern tastes appreciate.

This album is somewhere between classic 16 Horsepower and the Woven Hand Mosaic album in terms of intensity and wooden sobriety (both are good traits - just different in pace and tone).

This is one of a very few albums I let repeat for the year that I wrote my book. It makes me miss the Fox Theater in Boulder and the Blue Bird in Denver.

Although I'm a big fan of 16 horsepower, I was really disappointed by this release. I did not find a single song on this cd to be very strong or memorable, though the other positive reviews led me the believe that this was one of their best, and darkest cds. By "darkest" I was hoping the reviewers also meant the hard hitting, nail bitingly powerful songs like some of the "dark" songs on his other cds. Not so. It wasn't exactly a horrible cd, just not something I'll waste my time listening to very much. If you're new to 16 HP start out with Low Estate or Sackcloth n' ashes, and don't judge this great band by one bad cd.

Grim, atmospheric, deep.......2006-12-29

I just got this and I dig the hell out of it. A few of the songs are sort of up tempo and contrast to the rest of the album, which is very much American Southern Dark Folk/Gothic. Like Lucero with all the lights off, or a lamenting ILCK's. I gave it 4 of 5 because I don't like the few Irish-ish drinking jigs. Where I live you hear way to much of that.

Gothic Americana Music - Haunting and Spiritual .......2006-10-09

Sixteen Horsepower is an amazing blend of Alternative Rock, Americana, Goth, and Punk. This band from Denver combines vocals that are part goth, part punk, and part Cold Mountain-like Americana with tripy strings, anthem-like drums, a haunting piano, and a whole host of traditional instrumentations. The entire mix is a riveting experience is in the category I call Gothic Americana.

Folklore is one of their most recent albums; it is a mesmerizing and haunting album that brings forth the image of a haunted house from Appalachia in the late 1800s. These ten songs set you down unexpectingly into empty country fields where a couple of dead bodies litter the ground around a burning wagon; into a rustic cabin with the creepy feeling that something bad has happened here.

These songs are at the same time haunting and spiritual. Sixteen Horsepower are the darker side of belief revealed.

A wasted talent.......2006-03-15

Watch Ian Moore in Concert and the guy will blow you away; Great style and plenty of taste. Listen to his CD's and it is a different story.
Again I need to emphasize on the issue that Ian is a great guitar player; the problem in his CD's is the lack of creating great songs.
Almost all the tracks are weak and fall short from being melodically complete; the guitar playing is very basic and does not show the real talent of this great guitar player.

This CD deserves no more than 2 stars, however after attending many concerts for Ian Moore, I say Ian has lots of potentials and can easily deliver 5 stars CDs; he just needs to work with someone that can write good songs. I hope he will use his talents right one day.

Unforgettable blues rock, listenable over and over.......2005-06-26

I had this album on my shelf for years (along with Ian Moore) and I just broke them out again; I forgot how good they are. I can't stop playing them right now. He really knows how to break it up by picking up the pace and slowing it down. Ian's voice is very pleasant, definitely a cut above your average pop dude. "Today" is fantastic but I like 'em all.

Searching for Himself.......2002-01-22

Ian Moore burst onto the scene and found himself in a dead-heat race with Chris Duarte for the title of the next Stevie Ray Vaughan. A title that neither of them wanted. Moore's self-titled first album was an exploration in Texas blues. The evolution of the Ian Moore Band really begins with "Modernday Folklore". The difference between this album and his previous two albums is noticeable, but not drastic.

There is some great guitar work on this album although Moore's guitar is not necessary in the spotlight on every song. One of my all-time favorite songs appears on this album. "Today" is just a piece of brilliant songwriting. Moore starts the song off slow, and then picks up the intensity twice before return to the close in the same slow pace. Great lyrics as well, with a good meaning underneath it all. The album starts off with "Muddy Jesus", which delights us with a fast groove, catchy lyrics, and good guitar work. "Daggers" is a slow bit of acoustical solo that gives you a sample of Moore's singing ability. Then he kicks it into the overdriven "Bar Line 99".

The only song that I really don't care for on this album is "You'll Be Gone". Maybe this is the first song of Moore's evolution. Although I own and listen to Moore's subsequent albums, they don't move me like his first three albums do. I prefer the Moore of old, but I don't blame him for breaking with convention and following his own voice. He might have lost a few listeners in discovering himself, but I'm sure he's gained a few more who wouldn't listen to his early stuff. I have to admire someone who's willing to follow what's inside then to be contorted to what the labels and listeners want. I'll still keep tabs on the Ian Moore Band, albeit not as close as I once did.

Worth Repeated Listens.......2000-09-17

If you like Blues Traveller or Lenny Kravitz you'll like this disc. Moore's lyrical and musical direction is similar. They are equally adept at doing swaggering blues-rock, as exemplified on songs like "Muddy Jesus" (this is one to put on repeat), and "Train Tracks". Their mellow, almost folksy ballad, "Daggers" is a highlight here, though not the only mellow tune.

I am a huge fan of Ian Moore and have been since his first release. I remember buying this the day it came out and instantly loving it. Their was a pretty drastic change in the sound and material, but it seemed to be a natural progression to me. I have met Ian several times and talked to him about his musical direction. He, as well as I, believe that we must all take our own path. He was being labeled the next Stevie Ray Vaughan, Guitar virtuoso, ect. when all he wanted was to write the music that is inside him. This recording is the first step in that direction. His latest recordings (Green Grass,...and All the Colors) are further examples that a truely talented artist can create beautiful music without following a formula, or following the industry. His guitar skills are still very much intact and his voice is stronger than it has ever been. It is purely magical when a voice and an instrument blends together and sounds like one voice. I highly recommend this CD as well as "Green Grass" and "and All the Colors" Also, if you get the chance to see him live...jump at it...you will not be disappointed!

The essence of Ireland.......2006-07-30

We are American but have lived in Ireland, and this this CD captures Ireland's essence like no other, both its sounds and its story -- so much so that it make me heartsick every time I hear it. It is also absolutely beatiful. Karen Casey's voice, both speaking and singing, is absolutely pure. Just wonderful for both children and adults, whether or not you know anything about Ireland or Celtic music.

This is that rarest of all things- music that is great for kids OR grown-ups.

The songs are wonderful, the musicians are the "all-star" heavyweights of Celtic music, the singing and playing is GREAT and Karan's narration and singing is mesmerizing.

Most of the songs are in English, a few are in Gaelic and the overall effect is transcendent.

A GREAT way to introduce someone of any age to the wonderful world of Celtic music.

Great Nap time song for Preschoolers.......2005-02-27

This is by far the best CD to play at nap time for children ages 3-6.

Casey is a Seal Maiden.......2004-06-15

Karan Casey is a perfect choice for this because she has a beautiful, pure, and expressive singing and speaking voice, one of the best I've heard in Irish music. I love the kids singing on the wiggly eels and the salty waves songs and Iarla O'Lionaird adds a somber tone to the disc. The singers and sound effects create a very real atmosphere and the music blends easily with the story, sometimes overlapping. It's good to know there are such high quality recordings for children.

CELTIC MUSIC ROCKS!.......2004-02-04

I have recently participated in this spectacular musical and this version of it is extremely well done. It includes all the ethnic instruments you would hope would be in a celtic sound track. If you are looking for a good story or if you just need to hear the sounds of the emerald isle, I suggest purchasing this CD. It is really worth it.
