Well before the release of this solid but slender debut, the Brooklyn-based Yeah Yeah Yeahs were the subject of so much international press hype that the White Stripes were probably taking quick, nervous peeks over their shoulders. But while
Fever to Tell captures a lot of whats good about the trio--mostly the caterwauling energy of their club shows--it also exposes the bands limitations. Singer Karen O is the undeniable star here, contorting her voice from a primal P.J. Harvey growl to the pre-orgasmic purr of Chrissie Hynde. Nick Zinner chops, slashes, and torpedoes his guitar around, across, and straight at Os voice, while drummer Brian Chase delivers a suitably raw trash-can thump. There are a lot of cool sounds on this 11-song, 37-minuute disc, and enough metallic-KO attitude to make a bare-chested grandpa like Iggy Pop proud. Whats missing is a more varied set of fully fleshed-out songs, the kind it took the White Stripes four albums to write. Hype too early in a career can be terrible burden--ask Liz Phair or, soon enough, the Vines. Better to enjoy
Fever to Tell for what it is--an uninhibited blast of garage-rock fury--without swallowing extravagant claims for a potentially great band still under construction.

OH YEAH!!!!.......2007-05-22
This is an interesting CD. If you're a fan of the punk genre or are just looking for a new sound -- BUY THIS CD.
The female vocalist has a really intriguing presentation. She growls, howls -- and carries a tune. Some of the songs are very catchy (my favorites are trak 1, maps and y control).
The best aspect of this band is the female singer. She is different (to say the least) and she carries it off so well. I never get tired of her vocals. I'm always interested in female singers that can actually sing and that have a strong presentation and she excels in those areas (in my opinion).
If you like strong female vocalists and engaging punk rock, this CD won't disappoint.
Perfect condition.......2007-05-14
The CD said it had no scratches - and it didn't. PLays like new and got here in a couple of days. Very good experience!
Awesome album.......2007-05-04
Creative, aggresive, original. Highly recommended if you like bands that start with THE (stripes, vines, etc)
You'll love this CD if you're hyperactive........2007-01-28
I bought this CD after seeing the music video for "Maps". I didn't know anything about the band so I was really surprised when I was listening to this CD. This album really rocks. When "Date With the Night", "Black Tongue", and "Tick" was playing, I couldn't stay still. They have a great sound; the album doesn't sound over-produced like any of the mainstream bands out there. There isn't one song on this disc that I didn't like. It's too bad their sound has changed; it's no longer sexy or nearly aggressive as most of the tracks on this album.
If you don't like it, don't review it!.......2007-01-13
Please don't compare this (or anything) to Pretenders I, since that album is one of the best in rock history. This however has a sound of it's own. Sure you can say Karen screams or whatever, she's not perfect (and what exactly is it that Bjork is doing?) If you haven't seen them live, then you have no business reviewing them. Nick Zinner does a pretty good job on guitar too. And for those you think otherwise, listen to their follow-up "Show Your Bones". Again, the haters are just jealous struggling 30-something "musicians" (more like scenesters) who are living off Top Ramen and Mac n' Cheese, just waiting for someone to discover them on MySpace. Give it up already.

Wow... I can't believe this hasn't rated higher.......2006-03-09
I think this is a really awesome cd from start to finish. Yes, I suppose if you were hoping for an entire album sounding like Maps then maybe it is a bit disappointing but the amazing energy and raw vocals make this a very sustainable orgasm of an album. I mean, I like to f*** to this. I've never heard their other material but I am so deeply impressed and turned on by this effort that I'm seeing there next show pretty soon and if they're good live i'll definately buy their other records.
Really I think this is a 4 star cd but I rated it with a 5 in hopes of bringing it up its overall rating a bit more. But check it out, it's certainly worth a listen or two.
Good edition but not good price.......2006-01-24
this album is a great upgrade from the u.s. edition but hard to follow up on price for the matter and the bonus tracks already appear on their single c.d. "date with the night" so mainly this is a backup if you can't find the single but otherwise a good album for alternative tastse maps is a solid run and hit song while date with the night is just a screech fest till mainly y control gives ou a chill (mainly from the promo video) and to top it off pin is just a bump bump bump beat track this c.d. is not a solid grunge album mainly to play on like lounge or whatever...
Y-Control... or Lost Control?.......2005-12-17
It seems as though the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have gone from super-original with "Maps," to just another rotten band, uninspired and drained of creativity. Karen O seems to have a nice, controlled voiced in "Maps" but sometimes, in her other songs, you just want to plug your ears. I don't actually have this CD, but I've heard nearly all of the songs on it and they're nothing like "Maps." Don't get me wrong, the songs are good. In particular, I like "Maps", "Date With the Night", "Rich", "Y-Control", and "Black Tongue", but like someone has already said, if you're buying this CD for "Maps" and hoping the other songs are just as good, don't buy it. I think of the other songs as a softer kind of Distillers song, if you know who the Distillers are. If you enjoy the Distillers but want something you can understand a bit better then this CD is great for you.
this rocks!.......2004-06-19
if your getting this cd just for the song "maps" and hoping the rest of the cd sounds the same, you might want to think twice.if you like pj harvey you might like this.my fav. songs are rich, black tongue, maps and y control.

Album Description
This is a recording of twenty-three romantic vintage songs from the concert hall and musical theater which were immensely popular with American audiences from the late nineteenth century through the l940s and were associated with the well-known baritones of their time such as Lawrence Tibbett and Nelson Eddy. These are songs of love, the sea, adventure!
The songs in this collection are sung by Steven Rainbolt, baritone, expertly accompanied by Robert Muckenfuss, piano. The vintage bravura and love songs in this recording showcase the vibrant warmth and rich timbre of Steven Rainbolt's robust baritone singing. Here he has invested songs of a bygone American era with an insightfully expressive understanding of the lyrics. His performance is at once stirring and beautiful, creating music that lingers in the mind to please heart and soul long after listening.
Customer Reviews:
classic male vocalist.......2001-05-06
This is wonderful. Timeless classics beautifully done. Made me happy... and calm in a age of haste and tension. By the time I got home from work, listening in the car, I was content and mellow and life was good again.
Wonderful songs and a marvelous voice.......2001-04-25
Steven Rainbolt has the most beautiful baritone voice-warm and rich and compelling. And the familiar, old-time songs he is singing here are of such variety anyone could find something to love, whether it's a heartfelt, poignant romantic melody or a rousing, spirited sea song. I love this CD!!! There's song for every mood and each one is a treasure.
Don't miss this Magnificent Voice & these fine Vintage Songs.......2001-04-22
The "Classical Singer" review [April 2001] praising this beautifuly sung and accompanied music piqued my interest--a baritone, a piano, fine old classic American songs! I ordered it and have enjoyed it very much. Steven Rainbolt has a wonderfully rich and expressive, robust, lyrical, at times heartbreakingly tender, baritone voice with thrilling resonance---nothing bland about it! His voice is well-suited to the twenty-three romantic songs of love, the sea, adventure in this recital. This is not background music for a party. Rainbolt's singing is far too compelling. You will want to savor every nuance of his singing without interruption. There is music here that will move you deeply such as "When I Have Sung My Songs to You." There is music here that will remind you of what love is meant to be in selections such as "Beautiful Dreamer" (the artist's own arrangement and the best I've heard), "My Lady Walks in Loveliness," "Sylvia," "If I Could Tell You," and "Who Are We To Say?" His deeply resonant "Shenandoah" is classic! Rainbolt's impeccable diction gives life and meaning to each word, sensitively enhancing the lyrics. Dramatic and spirited songs of adventure (the rogue songs)such as "Song of the Vagabonds" showcase a voice clearly also at home in operatic roles. You will find yourself humming the delightful Rudyard Kipling poem "Rolling Down to Rio" with its marvelously rippling accompaniment. There is much here to please those who love the sea. "Trade Winds" is lovely, a sailor's tender lullaby! The piano accompaniment for each song is delightful, superb! I liked the artist's program notes and having the words to the songs included in the CD booklet. This CD compares quite favorably to Thomas Hampson's "An Old Song Resung."
'
Beautiful Melodic Music! Unforgettable Voice!.......2001-04-16
These heritage songs gave me infinitely more than an hour of great listening. They stirred my heart--especially the love songs. The sincere tenderness and depth of emotion in Steven Rainbolt's very moving voice coupled with beautiful melodies and poetic words conspire to create music that shows my generation just how impoverished we are when it comes to love songs. The songs on this CD focus on what love can give. The songs of my generation by comparison all too often focus instead on what love can get, with love itself reduced to little more than a longing for instant self-gratification--the tuneless pounded message of rock and rap. The wonderful classic love songs here can't be topped for emotional appeal and food for the soul!
