The Young and Hopeless

The Young and Hopeless

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Despite the piercings and spiky hairdos of Good Charlotte frontmen Joel and Benji Madden, the filth and the fury of punk are not in evidence on The Young and the Hopeless. Rather, Good Charlotte lean toward the sunny power pop favored by the lighter Huntingdon Beach, California, outfits. Nevertheless, with the title track and "The Anthem" ("I'm just a minor threat"), the band appeals directly to high-school outsiders. Relationship problems are delved into in "Wondering" and "Say Anything," and they even find space to explore comic horror with "My Bloody Valentine." So they're not as intense or enraged as the hardcore likes of Black Flag or even Linkin Park. But the undeniably strong melodies this bunch comes up with have plenty of appeal on their own terms. --Dominic Wills

i have all their albums and this one is the best. if you like straight rock this is for you

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2007-04-04

The only reason I did I a kids review is because I don't have an account on here. However, I do like the CD. I wouldn't call it punk, it resembles Simple Plan, but only more "Rocky".

2 out of 5 stars Talent to Burn.......2007-03-18

Unlike their sister band A Simple Plan who have built their foundation on being hard working, honest and professional Good Charlotte sound like the type of band who really have it all. Why then does this album add up to such an unsatisfying listen?. Well Jim it all comes down to the old chesnut of song stucture. Formulaic would be positive praise for this album, you will yearn for the journey but Good Charlotte won't even let you outside. Why then is it so hard to give up on these guys?. Chemistry, plain and simple. These guys were born to play together much like Tool and The Sisters of Mercy in different genres. Be warned though sheer talent will not keep this skeptic around forever and future releases have failed to address this problem. Insert sigh.

4 out of 5 stars Good Charlotte...more like Best Charlotte.......2007-02-12

Good Charlotte is the best band since Cryptopsy. If you like Good Charlotte and have never heard of Cryptopsy, I highly recommend you buy at least one of their CDs. You are guaranteed to love it.

1 out of 5 stars The Young & Musically F*cked.......2006-01-24

Hypocrites have never been favourites of mine, nor fully grown men with greasy rubbish hair...and what can only be called W*NK makeup. The fact that these little jerk-offs are spreading their diseased ramble...supposedly punk type stuff...makes me want to slate everything about them, but I'll try and keep it concise.

I say hypocrites because Good Charlotte obviously have a hideous acrimony concerning money, or more so people with money. Which the last time I checked was...em...YOU. ''Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous'', well you should know my dense friends. The video to this song is fantastic, from my viewpoint, for those who haven't had the privilege of watching the ''Lifestyles Of The Rich & Famous'' video I'll briefly run you through it. Helicopters and police sirens are zooming around a house where GC are playing their song, this is understandable though, OF COURSE they have no choice but to arrest such vile ear drum malice `music' that Ghastly C*nt are gaily belting out. The best moment though is the court room scene, how it makes me laugh. Here you have a group of completely rounded-off social misfits ALL in the same room. When does that ever happen, APART from a GC concert of course, where all sorts of tasteless teenage turds can be hunted down. The faces on the retarded members are all doom and gloom, just waiting for the judge to give them 173 years for assault and manslaughter of one poor, unassuming ear drum.

Other 'smash hits' from the pink-sausage album that is ''The Young & Hopeless''...such as ''The Anthem'', precisely the same song as the other 13 on this plastic disc (NOT an album) with altering lyrics, which are quite obviously well thought out to generate as much money as possible (aiming at the teenagers who deal with life by a) wearing bad makeup b) hating everything c) cutting themselves TO FRIGGIN FEEL and most annoyingly d) listening to this). ''The Day That I Die'' will indeed be a fine day for the non-followers...and when you turn in your grave just remember DON'T give ANY money or inheritance to relatives, because hell, THATS GAY!!!!. ''Emotionless'' is precisely what this album is, capped off by the slaughter-torture of no. 13, ''no emotion'' or ''no feeling'' is picked off perfectly by this album, along with grandiose epic ''no f*cking thought'' just to add to this already pants piece of work that is more spunkerific than the product of a good five-knuckle-shuffle.

Maybe that's harsh.

Who am I kidding, this is one cesspit of an album.

5 out of 5 stars Buy It!.......2006-01-06

5 out of 5 stars A great cd.......2004-08-07

First of all, I'd love to point something out. Who give a #?!& if Good Charlotte is punk? Any moronic fool that judges someone on what their image is is absolutely pathetic. Maybe if you could possibly look at the music? So what if GC isn't punk? And you know what's funny? A few of the band members actually said "we don't consider ourselves punk." Maybe you should study up before you do some bashing?

Anyhow, I'm not particularly into 'pop' music, but I love GC. Not because I consider them punk, because... I don't, but because of the messages in their songs. Like "Hold On," "Emotionless," and even funny ones like "Lifestyles of the Rich and the Famous." Not everyone likes this kind of music... so what? I'll suggest something to all the people who are "outraged" by GC; constructive criticism. It's what MATURE people do- people who don't judge what people look like, but what really counts. In this case; music.

Here are my ratings for the songs:
A new beginning- 2 stars. I don't particularly like instrumental pieces, but the music is pretty awesome.
The Anthem- 4 stars. Overplayed, but still a good song with a good message.
Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous- 5 stars. Even overplayed, it makes me laugh now and then.
Wondering- 4 stars. Good song... and catchy!
The Story of My Old Man- 5 stars. Makes you think... great song.
Girls and Boys- 5 stars. Funny song, Hilarious video!
My Bloody Valentine- 3 stars. Okay song... it was overplayed, but my fault for that one ;).
Hold on- 5 stars. If I could give it more, I would. This song has saved many lives, and I'll always thank GC for that.
Riot Girl- 4 stars. Love the chorus, and catchy riffs :D.
Say Anything- 5 stars. Even if this is one of the most "poppish" songs by GC, it's still good.
The Day that I Die- 4 stars. I got the chorus stuck in my head once too many times... but it's a good song :).
Young and the Hopeless- 5 stars. Everyone should've heard this song by now. Another great hit by GC!
Emotionless- 5 stars. I would also love to give this more stars, and this song is part of my life as well.
Movin On- 5 stars. I love it; and it's another great one as well!

All in all, the second cd is just as fantastic as the first- best cd I own. If you don't agree, fine. Just don't tell me off for liking what I like. Get a life... you obviously need one.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-07-13

I love almost all of the songs on this cd. "The Day That I Died" is different from the others. "Movin On" is my favorite. Good Charlotte is cool and I like the guy who plays the drums. I hate "A New Beginning," "Say Anything," "Young and hopeless," and "Bloody Valentine." I like the other songs. All in all this cd is awesome!

4 out of 5 stars Good Band , First cd is my fav. though ..........2004-03-14

I 100 % agree with the person who told off ''"sham2475 from Washington DC." '' ... These 70's wannabe poser punks are trying to pretend they were born in the 70's and they are real punks... 70's punk is a part of history but teenie boppers who degrade their own generation to pretend they knew what the 70's punk were about are just in denial and foolish ... if you set the date back on all these bands and see their first cd , you will notice everyone loves them then a while down the line one ''poser'' screams the clash and the rest of the morons follow . i wonder who the real poser followers are , the punk pop group or the new gen trying to be 70's punk .. i will sadly have to say its the wannabe 70's punk anti groups .. while punk pop people are happy , who are the ones with the anger and hate .. you got it , the poser 70's teens ... if youre just getting into GC , check out the hidden tracks and the first cd . Its really good . If you like this band and have become dissapointed with the movement to a more poppish feel then go and check out these bands ... Plain White T's , Unsung Zeros , All Thats Left , Dont Look Down ,Fall Out Boy ... If you like something a bit louder id reccomend ''Boys Night Out'' . if anything , dont be intimidated by these wannabe poser 70's punks . im 21 and i sware , its a phase these teenie boppers are going through .. if they get in your face , kick them in the shin or nuts and walk away silently with a smile :)

Nirvana used to be my favorite band before i got into punk rock and for you to compare them to good charlotte is such an insult, think if kurt cobain was still alive he would kill you instead of killing himself!!!

how dare some of you guys call your selfs punk rock!!! its unbrliveable how stupid you guys can be!!! i heard someone say something like," good charlotte is more punk than you'll ever be"

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2004-07-16

I was just browsing around my local FYE and I came across this CD. Good Charlotte is one of my favorite bands, so I decided to listen to a sample of the CD. Wow, I was amazed. I thought this was going to be one of those things where a different band covers GC's songs, but no, this is an actual ORCHESTRA playing GC's songs, which is very very awesome. The violin is supposed to represent Benji and Joel's vocal harmonies, and whoever plays does a great job. The orchestra does all the music and its all still done with that energetic, explosive, uplifting feeling you get when you listen to GC's records. It really makes you appreciate both classical music and the infectious songs that the GC guys have created. If your a fan, this is a must buy.

1 out of 5 stars C'mon!!!!!!!.......2004-07-01

Man, this really sux!! c'mon, u can do better than this!!!! get da' reel gc, dude, not this "string quartet" crap!!!! i meen reely, y do they have 2 do this, huh?! just 2 humiluate every band under the sun? dude, y do i even gotta give this crap a single star??!! huh?! ask urself, does it even deserve 1 star? huh? i didnt think so.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good.......2004-05-19

I bought the CD without listening to any previous sound clips which is a big step to me, but I like both punk and classical (call me crazy). The CD is alot better than the regular tribute to GC which was just horrible. First off the quartet is at its best on the more fast paced songs like "Young and the Hopeless", "Hold On" and "The Click". When I saw the track listing I thought "Little Things" would be a horrible choice to play on stringes since anyone who's ever played the song on guitar or bass knows its incredibly simple, but like the rest of the album I was pleasently surprised. "The Anthem" is also quite catchy. The only songs I don't particularly care for are "Emotionless" and "Complicated". "Emotionless" seems like it'd be a good song for the string quartet but I was dissapointed. I just don't really like "Complicated" that much, I think they should have done "Bloody Valentine" instead. Even with those minor flaws the album still has 10 wonderful tracks, and just about all other string tributes have only 10 songs, out of which 1 is a self composition. The music is strikingly Good Charlotte, almost like the band themselves played strings. The cello and violas do a good job at capturing Benji and Billy's guitar playing. I don't think the bass playing does Paul justice, but it's not bad. The violin really captures Joel and Benji's singing, and the occasional drumming is good to. I'm surprised but...this album is awesome! Get it!

    5 out of 5 stars I'm old and I like it!.......2004-08-28

Ok, here is the deal about this band. There are a few things that I have taken a few second looks at but on a whole, the band is really good. My teenage daughter swears by them. I have watched her open up and talk more about her feelings because these guys talk about real life. The one exception is "My Bloody Valentine." That is a little much, but we talk about the music and it has been something that has help her so much that there is no one that could tell me that they are not a great band. They have fun at what they are doing, talk about real life, and they reach out to those who are not spoken for!
The CD, Young & the Hopeless, I purchased originally for me. "Hold On" is one of the best messages that I have heard in years! I only wish that the bands when I was a teen were more like these guys!

4 out of 5 stars If only for the video.......2004-06-27

I'll admit that I'm not a big GC fan and I don't perticularly like the single 'Young & Hopless' but I do love the video for 'Hold On'. It is a beautifuly insperational video and it alone is worth the money, although I would check out the used & new copes for better deals first.

    1 out of 5 stars 12 dollars for this!?!?.......2004-06-11

have you noticed that everyone that had ever given Good Charlotte a good review can't spell and dEy tYpE LyKe DiS?? Are you really going to listen to advice from stupid 13 year old kids? Please do yourself a favor and stay far, far away from anything relating to GC. If you like punk, i recommend you go buy a Green Day, Rancid or Blink 182 cd. All of them cost about the same and has more than three songs on it.

Hold On and The Young & The Hopeless are the most meaningful songs on The Young & The Hopeless CD. Their not exactly fun, party-like songs like The Anthem or Girls & Boys, they showcase maturity lyrically and musically. Great artwork too.

1 out of 5 stars Good Charlette Sux Nuts.......2004-12-03

If I were to describe how much good charlette [...] I would have to gather all the crap rock groups: simple plan, NFG, Blink 182, etc together, give them out of tune guitars, and have them screem at the top of their lungs playing gay little power chords. Come on, people punk rock sux. Oh yeah I hated this song also.

And PS: if all you [...] little possy girls want real music buy tool, ACDC, Nirvanna, Incubus, Rage against the machine. theres better stuff out there. bye

To marcus, seeing as you just started getting into punk music, i suggest you not criticise the type of music when you just started getting into it. haven't you learned by now that punk music isn't really supposed 2b how absolutely spectacular the music is, it's about expressing your feelings into the music and letting go, i think you're just getting the wrong idea. Well i do own this CD and what can i say, it's amazing in my opinion. i wouldn't say it's full-blown punk rock, but it's a great CD to listen to and actually take note of the meaning.

    2 out of 5 stars Crap-tacular.......2004-03-11

OK I've been REALLY trying to get into the whole punk genre. I've listened to bands such as Simple Plan, Blink-182, Sum-41, and Switchfoot. All that I can say is that all that these bands have going for them is that they're catchy (that's why I gave them the extra star). Good Charlotte is another one of the bands to add to this compilation of sub-par bands that b*tch about family and/or relationship problems. I guess it works seeing how it reaches the millions of 13-16 year olds out there that are going through the same things in their lives. However, if I were a parent, I wouldn't want my child listening to music that has lyrics that include "the best day of my life is the that I die."

I'm really disappointed in how little skill is required to play these guys' music. I've only been playing guitar for about 2 weeks and I can pluck out half of this no-brainer crap (not that it matters, but my primary instrument is piano). I guess record companies have really dropped their standards and are just concerned about money anymore. I mean, I don't hear any intrumental solos or complex meters or anything. Just power chords and whiney lyrics. But for some reason all of this amounts to being catchy music. Go, go appealing to the future of our country by producing this vile display of a lack of talent.

Just incase you haven't noticed, Good Charlotte is the single WOST BAND TODAY! They truley are pathetic. Don't waste your time or money with this garbage.

5 out of 5 stars ITS JUST GREAT!!!!!!!.......2004-01-02

This CD just rocks. GC is a great band. If you like their singles lifestyles of the rich and famous, girls&boys, the anthem then you should really buys this CD cuz there are all catchy songs as the singles are. The lyrics are just great, not senseless and they give you hope. I defenitely think you will like this CD, if you like punk/rock bands like greenday, mxpx, mest...
    AND DON'T FORGET:
