The Dead Can Dance chanteuse ditches her partner, Brendan Perry, for this solo outing. Mixing middle-eastern drones, Balkan stringed instruments, Chinese percussion, and the European classical tradition, it's a singularly beautiful and mesmerizing album that occupies a genre all of its own. File next to Chant and Jan Garbarek, and be sure to alert progressive-minded classical buffs.

Haunting, Strange, Beautiful, and Intoxicating.......2007-03-30
This isn't an "easy listening" experience as there are some frightening moments, where you feel suspended on a cliff sustained only by spider webs. This is my experience of the opening track, and ther are quite a few that have a dramatic and suspenseful edge sustained by discordinant vocalizations. But those uncomfortable moments make the rest of the record shine. I have no idea what language she's singing in--a totally random guess says some ancient aramaic or bedoiun, just call in Foreign with a capitol "F." Maybe she made it up; it doesn't matter. All you need to now is that it will capture your soul and take it on a harrowing yet sublime ride. It's Tribal; it's pre-time. If you like this, check out Jah Wobble's Umbra Summas.
Floored.......2006-01-18
I am floored by the power and immensity of this voice. When Lisa Gerrard sings, it is not so much that her voice fills the room as it becomes the very atmosphere surrounding the listener. It is no wonder that Paul Oakenfold chooses her voice to blend with his ethereal mixes to create an experience like touching the numinous. There is no comparison. The range of Lisa Gerrard's voice is simply breathtaking, as evidenced in "Sanvean." Her work as half of Dead Can Dance was awesome, but she stands even more impressively on her own merits.
Now we know what aliens sound like.......2005-12-20
Her voice cannot be human. Seriously. I first heard it on the way to work one night("Hearts of Space,"I think)and was almost mesmerized into driving off the road."So that's the way they capture us,those aliens!" They allow us to hear a beautiful, haunting voice, and we are rendered helpless.Seriously,though. You have got to hear this album. If "Sanvean" doesn't have any effect on you,I suggest you have someone search for your pulse. The words are not in English, but the passion it evokes speak volumes. Her voice is sheer heaven, and rips your heart out of your chest, but you keep going back for more because hers is the sirens song.Too beautiful to describe.
operatic and illuminating solace.......2005-10-21
This is Lisa Gerrard at her best. There are tracks on this album that move me in such a way as the best opera has. Track 4 (Sanvean) is one of the most beautiful songs I can remember hearing in a long while. I had the pleasure of recently seeing Dead Can Dance at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago and was able to hear Lisa Gerrard perform both Sanvean and The Rite (track 5) live; I had tears in my eyes...she has the most enchanting and moving voice. I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys opera or music that has wonderful cultural influence.
Music Is the Answer.......2005-06-17
In a multi-fractionated world divided by culture, religion, economics, and language only one thread offers a hope of union and common ground: music. Ms. Gerrard's incredible offering spans time and ideology with spiritual power, and, for a magic listening moment, the many become as one.

Disappointing.......2007-03-20
I love Lisa Gerrard's voice and her music on some soundtracks is fantastic. But this album is just WEIRD!!

Album-Drowning Pool Artist-Rumbledog.......2006-10-02
Drowning Pool (although a great band) Have absalutly nothing to do with this disc. Drowning Pool's Sinner came out in 2001 Rumbledog released the ST debut in 1993 and The Drowning Pool in 1995. So instead of dissing Rumbledog you need to Dis Drowning Pool for stealing the name. Anyone who did get this and liked it should look into the ST debut and any and all Dirty Looks you can find. Also look into Burning orange Taar. Anyone who loves Dirty Looks and was interested in Rumbledog, they are not the same. This is still a great disc and Rumbledog are a great band but this is NOT Cool From The Wire or Turn Of The Screw. If you liked Slave To The Machine or Rip It Out you should enjoy either of Rumbledogs releases. Anyone that likes 80's Hard Rock or Ac/Dc around the Dirty Deeds-High Voltage era should look into DIRTY LOOKS! They are by far my Favorite band and have been since around 1989 when I discovered Cool From The Wire. I done everything I can think of to grow my collection from then. Don't stop with the 3 listed CD's. They are all great. I even have I Want More, In Your Face and the self titled idependant releases. Cool From The Wire, Turn Of The Screw, Five Easy Pieses, Bootlegs, One Bad Leg, Chewing On The Bit, Rip It Out, Slave To The Machine, Rumbledog-Rumbledog, Rumbledog-Drowning Pool, & Burning Orange-Taar close out my collection.
Not Bad For Being In The Used CD Bin.......2005-11-19
I shop at this used cd/book store quite often. I have seen this cd on the shelf for over a year. I decided to pick it up and look at the track listing; where I saw they did a cover of the song Black Betty. I had an extra $2 and picked it up. Its not a bad cd by any means. I've heard better, but I've also heard worse. My favorite songs are of course the cover of Black Betty, Some Other Day, and Don't Breathe The Air
Rumbledog - descendent of Dirty Looks........2003-11-30
A hard to find CD, fronted by ex-Dirty Looks vocalist Henrik Ostergaard. Jassen Wilber supplies the bass.
Some change of direction following Dirty Looks. If you want another sleaze classic like Cool From The Wire then this ain't it. But what you do have are competent musicians executing a good, solid album following the changes in rock throughout the early nineties and there should be something in here for Dirty Looks fans who are willing to listen.
Shall I give Drowning Pool's albums 1 star now for not being Rumbledog? Mmmmm. . .
Ok....So this isn't Drowning Pool...Who cares?.......2003-08-05
I don't see why everyone is complaining just because this isn't an album by the band Drowning Pool. Its by a band called Rumbledog though and its called Drowning Pool, but you don't have to diss them about that! This album came out before Drowning Pool even released their first so don't diss it.Plus this album doesen't sound THAT bad...So I guess its a ok album.
