It's time for an update of our image of Jewel, the ingenue who set the music world on fire with her 1995 debut album, Pieces of You. After all, that effort consisted primarily of songs Jewel had written several years before, some of them dating back to her days as a free- spirited waif living in a van on the beach in San Diego. Now, at 25, she's become a sort of guru for self-expression and full disclosure, revealing perhaps too much of herself in see-through dresses worn to awards shows and a critically drubbed (yet bestselling) book of poetry. Spirit makes plain why Jewel's well-intentioned yet sometimes facile lyrics strike a chord with her audience while her poetry lies flat on the page. On songs like "Deep Water," "Hands," and "Down So Long," her words are borne aloft by sparkling melodies and her soaring voice, making even the most cynical observer take a schoolgirl-notebook image such as "your heart like grape gum on the ground" or an unreassuring platitude like "If I could tell the world just one thing / It would be that we're all OK" somewhat in stride. On Pieces of You, Jewel posed the musical question "Who will save your soul?" On Spirit, it sounds like she wants to do it herself. And the truth is, if you don't overanalyze it, the album does act as a sort of balm for wounded psyches or maybe a primer for raising your own inner child. Maybe she's right and we are all OK. Who knew? --Daniel Durchholz
New Musical Express
Jewel's proclivity for syrupy platitudes can no longer be blamed on her barefaced farm-girl naivety. [She] should have now seen enough of the world to know it isn't really like a fabric softener ad....

Though not their first-ever career survey, Rush's Spirit of Radio compilation is an ideal point of entry for newbie fans or anyone who consistently likes the Rush songs most often heard on commercial radio. While 1990's Chronicles set was more encompassing--including tracks beyond Spirit of Radio's '87 cut-off point--the Canadian prog-rock trio's benchmark moments are represented among these 16 songs. Hence the appearance of "Closer to the Heart," "Tom Sawyer," "New World Man," "Time Stand Still," "Fly by Night," "Subdivisions," and the title track. --Kim HughesCustomer Reviews:

The Spirit of Radio, the hits of Rush.......2007-02-02
Rush has three decades of music to sift through so with "The Spirit of Radio", it's a nice collection of hits from their earliest studio albums up to the late eighties.
I enjoyed the double CD set "Chronicles" that they released in 1990 which was also a nice hits package, but this is still something to savor. Old classics like "Working Man" are still as energetic a listen as when I first heard them, and the song I myself think of them the most by which is "Fly By Night" is on here as well. Jump to track three and you will experience the eclectic and timeless space overture known as "2112 Overture/Temples of Syrinx" Syrinx clocks in at over six minutes long and has a lot of depth in musicianship and instrumental prowess. The ever poetic "Closer to the Heart" is a woeful and powerful single that is another gem on the album. "The Trees" is another classic that is a creative song with a lot of meaning and a killer guitar solo. "The spirit of Radio" is a pick me up and graciously stages Neal Peart's drum expertise at the forefront. "Freewill" is another old friend that is clever in its lyrics and has some dark tones to it amidst a range of great sounds and melodies. The emotional opening of "Limelight" takes you further on the journey of hits and is one of my favorites with Geddy Lee forging ahead with vocals that evoke various themes and thoughts.
Track nine is "Tom Sawyer", perhaps the most popular FM Radio hit the band had from the album "Moving Pictures". Along for the ride (no pun intended) from that album is also the Futuristic sci-fi theme of "Red Barchetta" which is about a boy in a strict government dominating future that has "car laws" and as you listen you experience the day he takes his uncles hidden car for a ride. The powerful anthem of "New World Man" glides in at track eleven and is one of the more ambient songs from the bands later material. "Subdivisions" is as dire as ever and has an intro that one cannot miss. The pop synergy of "Distant Early Warning" is on here as well, followed by another FM staple in the catchy track known as "The Big Money".
The album rounds out with the epic track "Force Ten" that is fast and fun, and although I was never a big fan of the song, still has enough staying power to definitely be included on here. The sonic "Time Stand Still" comes in as track sixteen and has some amazing changeups in tone. Heartfelt in the chorus, Time Stand Still is the perfect song to end this masterpiece collection with.
If you even "like" Rush, you should look into getting this album. Thirteen years of various songs that make for a sound and complete hits package for perhaps what could be called the "First Half" of the bands tenure. I wasn't sure at first about getting a CD like this of the bands material since I already had several studio albums from over the years, but I got this delivered today and definitely don't regret it now. They are one of the most innovative and artistic rock bands of the past thirty years, so how could you go wrong?
A comprehensive compilation.......2007-01-14

- Long Time Sun
Album Description
This is Snatam Kaur's latest release and it is a joy to behold. Snatam has woven a magnificent tapestry of Gurmukhi, English, violin, guitar and flute and produced an album that is both spiritually moving and foot tapping at the same time.Like every Kundalini Yoga class, the album begins with the chant Ong Namo and unfolds with Snatam's flawless voice dancing over gentle flute, Indian violin, nylon string guitar and subtle keyboard. She weaves in devotional English lyrics such that one experiences the essence of the Gurmukhi chant with simple clarity.
With deeply-moving music composed jointly by Thomas Barquee and Snatam Kaur, the second track, Ray Man, seduces listeners into a state of sublime meditation. The lyrics translate to "Oh my mind, practice yoga in this way."
The third track, Hari Har, is the liveliest song Snatam has ever recorded. A fast-paced, drum-filled mantra that gets you up on your feet, this track introduces us to a much stronger side of Snatam's vocals.
The next track, a simple and beautiful version of the healing meditation Ra Ma Da Sa, is accompanied by slow and soft classical guitar and keyboards with the flavor of a lazy river, gently flowing by on a summer afternoon.
The final two tracks reveal the true cross-over nature of this album. Both in English, they are two songs very near to Snatam's heart. The first, By Thy Grace, has been a favorite at her live performances over the last year. This track sheds light on the title of the album, opening with the line "It is by the Grace that I sing Your Holy Name." Closing with an original composition of the Irish blessing, May the Long Time Sun Shine Upon You a sweet and grace-filled farewell prayer.

"So I'm a little left of center, I'm a little out of tune," sings Michelle Branch on her debut album's "You Get Me." Well, maybe. Branch offers a well-produced pastiche of chiming and strumming guitars, hip-hop-lite beats, quiet-verse-to-louder-chorus templates, and positive thinking. At her best--"If She Only Knew," a propulsive love note to an ex--she rivals the likes of Sixpence None the Richer as likable radio-aimed fare. Catchy and self-expressive while breaking absolutely no ground, Branch also echoes everyone from label-mate Alanis Morissette to the solo Belinda Carlisle. She dies just a little in this crazy mixed-up world, escapes to her secret garden for sunshine in the pouring rain, and ultimately finds her reflection getting clearer. The Spirit Room could be the next bit of pop philosophy to dazzle mainstream audiences. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
very impressive.......2007-06-22
This album is a breath of fresh air. No really, it is!.......2007-06-12
And don't get me started on John Shanks. This guy is a musical genius. He works with Michelle Branch on production and helps write five of the eleven songs on this nice full length debut. He is also responsible for the catchiness of Ashlee Simpson songs, which most of them I love.
Best songs:
All You Wanted
Goodbye To You
Drop In The Ocean (this song is amazing)
Honorable Mention:
Something To Sleep To
If you don't own any CDs by this talented singer/songwriter/guitarist/etc, etc. It would be wise to start at the beginning with The Spirit Room.
The only thing that bothered me a bit was the song titles: Maybe I'm in the minority, but some of them were just too predictable, leaving some of the songs to lack a bit of depth. I believe Michelle was rather young when she wrote some of these songs though...
Anyway, 4 stars!
P.S. My favorite line is in the song Goodbye To You. It's capitalized:
"I've been searchin' deep down in my soul/Words that I'm hearing are starting to get old/Feels like I'm starting all over again/THE LAST 3 YEARS WERE JUST PRETEND...
" If you want to, I can save you..." - Michelle Branch ROCKS .......2007-05-20
1. Everywhere- 10/10 This song's one of my favorites! It has a nice upbeat tune to it, and the lyrics are catchy. A great way to start a career.
2. You get me- 10/10 Another Great song! I like the lyrics "So I'm a little left of center, I'm a little out of tune". It's great for any teen who feels ordinary.
3. All you wanted-10/10 Such a good song! I can feel it's about her trying to save a boy from the popular crowd. Here everything fits.. the lyrics, music, everything.
4.You set me free- 9/10- Everything's good in this song, just not upbeat enough for me, but it's also great!
5.Something to sleep to- 8/10 As the song says.. it's good to listen to if you want a soothing sensation before sleeping!
6.Here with me-9/10 Not the best, but still has everything nice and flowing. I like it.
7.Sweet Misery- 9/10 It's catchy, and the musics good, but I like All you wanted and Everywhere better.
8.If she only knew- 10/10 This is another favorite! It's fun, and I'm sure anyone would love Michelle after hearing this song.
9. I'd rather be in love- 9/10 This song shows Michelle wise beyond 18. The lyrics fit the mood and music of the song.
10.Goodbye to you- 10/10 A song about moving on with your life. This fits all the feeling you're supposed to fell after a break-up. Another fave.
11.Drop in the Ocean- 8/10 A bit too mellow for me, but it's perfect to end the album.
Beautiful tunes and lyrics.......2007-01-08
Michelle Branch rocks!.......2006-12-26
1. Everywhere- 9/10- A fun and upbeat song. Pretty good, love the intro to it.
2. You Get Me- 5/10- It's pretty, but just too slow to me. Maybe it'll grow on me eventually.
3. All You Wanted- 10/10- The BEST on the album. Love it! Was this a single? If not, it definalty should have been.
4. You Set Me Free- 10/10- Like i already wrote, I got this CD after hearing this song on Ice Princess. Really good and fun to sing to.
5. Something to Sleep To- 7/10- OK. You should listen to it if you want to go to sleep. I still think it's OK.
6. Here With Me- 9/10- Love the beginning and the chorus. It seems like a really good song for a party.
7. Sweet Misery- 6/10- OK also. I just don't really like how the chorus is and it's too short.
8. If Only She Knew- 10/10- Fun and cool. One of my favorites.
9. I'd Rather Be in Love- 7/10- Sounds alot like Sweet Misery.
10. Goodbye to You- 8/10- This is a really pretty song about moving on in life.
11. Drop in the OCean- I don't really get this song. I'm not going to rate it.
Overall, this CD gets an A. It's pretty good. I think you should buy it.

Praiseworthy Music!.......2007-07-26
Back to the main topic ...
As a matter of personal taste, I'd have to admit that HOW CAN WE BE SILENT isn't as strong as their previous outing (ANOTHER JOURNAL ENTRY, with its terrific pop/rockish anthem 'I Need You To Love Me,' spawned two releases -- the original and a special edition), but that's largely because ANOTHER -- the group's second disk -- really catapulted the Barlow girls to the stratosphere of the Christian music industry so it's inevitably a hard act to follow.
Still, the girls have matured, and so has their sound. The music -- while a bit melancholy, a bit meditative -- is more complex than the tracks on ANOTHER JOURNAL ENTRY (I think one of the attributes of that disc is the fact that the music felt stripped down to basics, matching their Journalized thoughts, a huge strong point); as they've grown, matured, experienced new challenges to life and faith, they've brought their music with them, and it's followed the same course. Their harmonies are far more poised, pronounced, and polished, and I think the only weakness here to matching musical complexity with lyrical complexity (if there is such a thing) is that I found myself trying to listen past the lyrics to hear some of the amazing sounds. Again, not necessarily a bad thing, just ironically distracting at times.
Thankfully, though, Barlowgirl knows how to rock, as is evidenced on my favorite track, 'Million Voices.' This is a massive track -- arguably this disk's 'I Need You To Love Me' -- a breakout runaway personal theme song for the entire Christian rock industry if not their entire Christian movement spanning centuries. (Yeah, maybe that's a bit strong, but so's the song!) With a driving beat and throbbing rock coupled with heavenly harmonies, this is the track I kept going back to over and over and over again. This is the track that, like their previous disc, was the perfect blend of words and music.
Keep at it, girls, keep 'journaling' your music. In my book, you'll always be a wonderful act for inspiration.

This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual "early music" periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing "fa, so la" exercises, which was called "shape note" singing because some places taught singing with notes as shapes--circle, rectangle, diamond, triangle. But it's the music that counts, and there are treasures here. They include two versions of "Amazing Grace," one familiar, one with an unusual melody and a piece called "Blooming Vale" which is as sophisticated as anything on their previous albums. "Shall We Gather at the River" is performed with a clarity and loveliness that makes us forget that it's normally sung as background to movies about the Great Depression. The foursome sometimes sing in rich harmonies and occasionally alone or in pairs or trios. This is glorious Americana and highly recommended. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:
