It's been a long time in coming, but with So Called Chaos Alanis Morisette has finally produced a worthy follow up to her globe-conquering debut. Calmer and more focused, the songs exude a new, mature woman, firmly in control of her life. "I'm not threatened by every pair of legs you watch go by," she sings with Zen-like serenity on "I Doth Protest Too Much" (as if she'd have said that on Jagged Little Pill). Time mellows--leave the angst to Avril Lavigne.

Overexposure once made her fantastic voice grate, but now it's like welcoming back an old friend--that distinctive little warble, that softness…it's her most valuable asset and the simple, clean production wisely allows it to breathe freely. Most of the songs follow a slow, quiet verse/loud sucker chorus pattern and there's nothing on here that rivals anything from her debut, but everybody (including herself) has accepted that now. The absence of a world-class co-songwriter plays a part, but it's a refreshing change to see no external involvement. Accept Morisette for what she is--a female singer/songwriter with an exceptional, original voice and you won't be disappointed. --Ben Johncock

2 out of 5 stars A Bitter Pill to Swallow.......2006-10-29

Following 2002's self-produced and underrated Under Rug Swept, Morissette returns in 2004 with So-Called Chaos. With this release, Morissette has done a complete makeover of her look with a serious haircut and sporting a look of casual glamour like she's aspiring to take Hollywood by strom but isn't 100% sure. Maybe the new look and image might have worked if Morissette's makeover in sound was good enough to go with it-but it's not. This CD starts out good with the opening cut "Eight Easy Steps," a fast-paced rockin' tune with Alanis at the wheel of leadership but also ready to bust her own chops at the same moment. "Out is Through" follows and also stands out, but then So-Called Chaos begins to turn problematic by not having an edge. And Morissette should never have brought John Shanks or Tim Thorney(or both)on board for assistance because she was left with bland arrangements behind many of the tracks. "Doth I Protest Too Much" is without a doubt the worst song Alanis has ever recorded. The title song attempts for a gritty and gutsy feel but even that attempt becomes overshadowed by Morissette's lyrics(yes, not her best work)when she refers to heartburn, headaches, and breached contracts as primary results of a chaotic lifestyle. The tracks continue with "All of Me," and "This Grudge," both rather dull, while the closing track "Everything" was a weak choice for the first single. Morissette has always been a progressive artist, but So-Called Chaos doesn't measure up to any of its predecessors, and may leave many fans longing to see the girl with the jagged heart still spinning with her free-flowing locks firmly in place.

3 out of 5 stars Grows on You.......2006-07-10

I'm a huge fan of Alanis Morissette and have all her CD's (less her dance albums before "Jagged Little Pill" and B-sides). "So-Called Chaos" took a while to grow on me - two years to be exact. Not an insult (like I said, I'm a huge fan of Alanis), but it took this long for me to discover the gems here.

"Eight Easy Steps", "Excuses", "So-Called Chaos" and "Not All Me" are all remarkable songs that only Alanis could create.

A really unique artist who will hopefully blow the world away again with a long overdue "comeback" (I hate to use this word, that the music industry seems to stick on artists who never really "go away") album.

5 out of 5 stars "I'll be the prettiest appendage to ever lose herself...".......2006-04-25

Alanis Morissette's So-Called Chaos is a glorious and fun record. I love all her albums, Under Rug Swept is her best, but for my favorite, it is defintely this album. Only ten songs here, but they are big, mighty songs with intelligent lyrics and rock out music. Eight Easy Steps is pure genius:"How to stay stuck in blue by blaming them for everything..." Out is Through is very mellow and simple: "We could just walkaway and hide our heads in the sand..." Excuses is the song i feel the most closest to:"These excuses, how they have served me so well, they've kept me safe, they've kept me stuck..." My fave song is Doth I protest too much:"I'm not enraged, not insecure as such..." Bees of my Knees is catchy and cute:"You make the bees of my knees weak, tremble and buckle." The title track has the best guitar music ever! "I wanna be naked runnning through the streets, i wanna invite this so-called chaos..." Not all Me is very grown-up Alanis:"It's not all me, it's not all my fault..." This Grudge is classic Alanis:"I wanna be big and let go..." Spineless is the best song on the record "I know you'd leave if I rocked the boat." Everything is accepting yourself and the person who loves you uncondtionally:"You see everything, you see all my light and you love my dark." This album is so damn good! Don't waste to purchase this album, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite brainy female singer . . ........2006-03-07

It's hard to believe at times, but Alanis Morissette has been with us for 10 years now, allowing us to peek into her many complex thoughts and moods. This has been a joy for many of us, as its makes us feel we're not alone. At least, that's how I've felt all of these years.

A Canadian pop star who broke into the U.S. market while changing her formula, she has come a long way. Alanis is the perfect example of an artist who continues to grow and intrigue while staying true to herself. In her last outing, So Called Chaos, we see a maturity and a more calm Ms. Morissette.

To start, So Called Chaos is one of Alanis' shorter conquests. The CD is barely 45 minutes long. It may be a short journey, but it's a delightful one, from beginning to end.

Eight Easy Steps - The first song starts off the album with a frenetic pace. This ballsy rocker is a sarcastic satire of being a hypocrite. The idea is about being a leader or someone many look up to, and not living with integrity and by example.

Out is Through -- This song slows the pace a little as a mid-tempo about having the urge to look on the other side of the fence when things get rough in a relationship. The moral of the story is: the only way to make is out is to go through the difficult times.

Excuses - While it is difficult to pick favorites amongst an album brimming with standouts, this song stands out for me. The intro, which starts slow and then builds, is about exactly what the title suggests; making excuses. It explores how making these excuses keeps you small and stuck, and gives you a false sense of security in being safe.

Doth I Protest Too Much - This melodic mid-tempo rocker is about denial. Its about putting on a brave face in the relationship when feeling insecure, claiming and acting as if you're not wrestling with your jealous-monster demons.

Knees Of My Bees - The title of this song is a play on words. Musically, it has a bit of a whimsical, eastern flavor to it. It's a tribute to looking at the good and beauty in a person. You see that person's strengths, and it not only awes you but makes you "weak in the knees".

So-Called Chaos - This is the title song of the album, and probably the heaviest music-wise. This is Alanis at her most rockin'. Like a large majority of the Morissette library of lyrics, these are genius. The song is about the headaches, people-pleasing frustrations of living up to society's standards and just wanting to be free and floating above it all.

Not All Me - After the frenzy of the aforementioned title song, things wind down a bit with this song. Almost ballad-like, this song tackles the subject of not being 100% responsible for someone else's issues and guilt. The idea is that when you meet people and are relating to others, many times we cross paths with a person who acts as our "mirror". Sometimes someone pushes our buttons, but it isn't always about us; sometimes it's the baggage the other person is carrying from previous situations.

This Grudge - This is the ballad on the album. This beautifully written song is about the nemesis who has guest-starred on just about every Alanis Morissette album. It deals with holding a long-term grudge, and feeling the hurt over and over again, thus hurting yourself more than the person who hurt you. Its about letting go so you can heal, as difficult as that may be to do.

Spineless - I've know many people whom this song would describe. You know who they are - those people who resemble a jelly-fish. These people get into a relationship and totally lose themselves in the other person. They give up friends, family, and hobbies to please the other person. They don't have opinions and thoughts, and they hang onto every word the other person utters. They're afraid of "rocking the boat". Their world gets smaller and they realize they've lost who they are. This nugget of a rocker is about resisting that tendency.

Everything - This pretty mid-tempo is about unconditional love. The message is as simple as that. Having someone in your life who sees the beauty in you, but the warts as well, and still loves you and stands by you anyway.

That would be the sum of So Called Chaos in a nutshell. From beginning to end, the album glows and shines with philosophical wisdom that only our favorite brainy Canadian artist could pose so eloquently. Alanis continues her trend of never making a bad album. She continues to be innovative and relevant in today's society. She makes you feel that she is one of the gang. She's been through it, too, and when she shares her art with us, she makes us feel as though we have another friend. I can hardly wait to see what the next chapter in Alanis-land will bring.
