Grows on you.......2006-10-04

While not an instant classic, Room Service grows on you like other BA albums haven't. Usually instantly likeable his other albums contained all the elements great rock albums need. Most of these elements are pulled back or non existant on this album - a refreshing change. Don't get me wrong, I love BA at his loudest and rockiest as much as anyone, but Room Service is the change that we needed.

The album, for some reason, was released in 2004 in Australia - a year before the US. I got this that same day as Greenday's American Idiot and I must say, for that reason it didn't get the instant airplay it deserved. AI is a gem right from the go, where this one took more time to get into.

The melodies aren't in your face, the subject matter is at times depressing but it's classy work from a man that rarely misfires. There's only one track that reaches the 4 miniute mark (only just at 4:04). There's no "Whoa!'s", "Yeah!'s" or "C'Mon!'s". There's smooth (yet gravelly) vocals, unobtrusive guitar solos and straight forward arrangements. It's all still familiar though. To compare it's probably mostly like Into The Fire - in cover also.

For me, Waking Up The Neighbours was BA's peak. The follow up, 18 Till I Die, while great, wasn't loud enough and On A Day Like Today, while also great, had too many fillers. Room Service is short - a touch under 37 minutes - and while not solid throughout, there's enough classics to keep a high standard as with all his releases since You Want It, You got It.

Best tracks:
The opener, East Side Story on first listen is a stand out and remains one. You can imagine yourself sitting in that cafe and seeing that girl getting on that bus.
Open Road, the first single is a nice rocker in the vein of Run To You. Standard stuff but catchy.
I Was Only Dreamin' is the standout track for me. Sad and melodic the only track to feature orchestral work.
Nowhere Fast is a great track. Nice slow rocker, almost the best track on the album.
Right Back Where I Started From is the best of the four faster paced tracks. Classic BA.
She's A Little Too Good For Me is a nice rocker. Reminds me of She's Only Happy When She's Dancing.

Room Service and Why Do You Have To Be So Hard To Love are good tracks without rising to greatness like the above ones.
The other three tracks; Flying, Not Romeo, Not Juliet and This Side Of Paradise while lyrically good, are nice but don't have much bite to them.

Well worth a listen. If you're not a fan (then you probably won't be reading this) give it a try and you might be surprised. There's nothing sappy here, no lovey-dovely love songs to gross you out.

Despite some shortcomings, his best effort since "Waking Up the Neighbours".......2006-04-14

Following 1998's "On a Day Like Today", Bryan Adams would embark on the longest hiatus' in his career in terms of releasing new material. With the exception of the soundtrack "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron", it would be seven years before Adams would release his next album - 2005's "Room Service". This comes more than two decades after Bryan Adams hit the apex of his career. In the 80s, Bryan did some great work on albums such as "Cuts Like a Knife", his signature album "Reckless", his deep album "Into the Fire", and his commercially successful "Waking Up The Neighbours". Following that string of 4 albums, Bryan released "18 Til I Die" and "On a Day Like Today". While these albums kept Adams' core fans happy, for the most part they did not achieve the glory of those past albums. Overall, Adams' "Room Service" is a better album than "18 Til I Die" and "On a Day Like Today", but it still doesn't reach the levels of Adams' hey-day.

Throughout his career, Adams has always surrounded himself with a top band of musicians. These musicians have included Keith Scott (guitar), Mickey Curry (drums), Dave Taylor (bass), and Tommy Mandel (keyboards). For "On a Day Like Today", Mandel would no longer be a part of the band. For "Room Service", Dave Taylor was dropped - leaving Scott and Curry as the only mainstays. Adams takes over the bass playing duties himself - along with guitar, piano, and harmonica. From a songwriting perspective, Adams brings back many of the songwriters who worked with him following his split with longtime songwriting collaborator Jim Vallance. These songwriters include Robert "Mutt" Lange, Phil Thornalley, Gretchen Peters, and Eliot Kennedy. While the Adams/Vallance combination might be one of the all-time greatest collaborations, this album might have some of the best lyrics since the days of Vallance. Finally from a production standpoint, Adams produces the album solo with minimal help from Thornalley. Normally I think a co-producer is important when an artist wants to produce himself because the co-producer will often challenge the artist to get the most out of him. However Adams still does a creditable job.

One unique thing about "Room Service" is that the vocals were recorded in hotel rooms throughout the world (thus the album's name, "Room Service"). The tracks were recorded in both concert halls and recording studios. While I think this is a great thing that Adams took an unorthodox approach to recording this album, I don't really see the difference. However I give super "mixer" Bob Clearmountain a lot of credit for helping engineer a smooth product. Overall I wouldn't view this recording approach as negative - just a non-factor. For the most part Adams plays it very safe. He doesn't venture into uncharted territory on this album. He uses a guitar-laden sound that is basically in step with the music of the mid 2000s. While Adams has always had a hard edge to his guitar sound, no doubt he is mellowing with age - and it reflects on this album. From a vocals standpoint, you still get the classic raspy style Bryan Adams vocals.

Here is a track by track review:

East Side Story: This is one of the album's underrated tracks. This song discusses the interactions of what goes on in the big city. It focuses on one interaction where Adams sees a woman from a window in a coffee shop and wonders how his life would change if he met that woman. Unfortunately as soon as he sees the woman, she gets on a bus and takes off.

This Side of Paradise: This is probably the best song on the collection. It is destined to be an classic among his fans. The world flies by and you have no control - so all you can hang on to is the constant.

Not Romeo Not Juliet: This is a song about two lost souls who won't admit that they are in love. I found this to be a very catchy song.

Flying: This is one of the weaker tracks on this collection. Although not a bad song, it didn't do much for me.

She's a Little Too Good for Me: This is a song that talks about a girl who is intimidating and presents a challenge to a man.

Open Road: This is another terrific track and easily will be up there as an Adams classic. The use of the "road" is a symbolic for making choices to go in one direction or another.

Room Service: As mentioned above, this song is symbolic for the way this album was constructed. However it discusses, all what it is like to be behind closed doors and alone.

I Was Only Dreamin: This song deals with someone who was in love with a woman who is now long gone, but still is clinging on to the memories.

Right Back Where I Started From: This song had a bit of a feel of "Back to You" when the song opens up. It also had a feel from some of Adams' older songs - thus the title.

No Where Fast: This song talks about how life passes one by so fast while taking someone you care about for granted.

Why Do You Have to Be So Hard to Love: This is a song that deals with the a person in love with someone who is difficult to love.

The liner notes contain all of the lyrics to each of the tracks. The songwriting and production credits are included. The names of the hotels, halls, and studios where this album was recorded are also listed - however there is not a track by track correlation with the locations. There is also some of Adams amateur photography included in the liner notes. Overall, despite some of the shortcomings, this is a very good album by Bryan Adams - certainly his best full studio album since "Waking Up the Neighbours". Highly recommended.

Grows on you.......2006-01-14

First of all, I have to warn: I love Bryan Adams' music. Still, it took me a long while to get this album. The first time i heard all the songs, only one stood out - 'Eastside story'. Its a fabulous, eternal song that everyone - and I mean everyone - can identify with. Then I had to listen a few more times and I started to like 'Not Romeo, not Juliet' and 'So hard to love'. They are lovely everyday songs thats so BA's style, but so unique no matter how many others of his you have listened to. There is one other song that is special to me 'I was only dreaming'. Thats a haunting, soft song that takes hold of your thoughts for entire days at a time. The only thing that I noticed is that somehow all the songs are short, but it doesnt matter when you are a fan, does it? :)

Laid back music.......2005-10-23

The songs on this album are more laid back sounding. I think it's because his band is still a trio w/ only guitar, bass, and drums. Gone are the slick keyboard melodies and extra dimensions from other instruments he used in the past (violin, flute, etc). I wish he would bring back the keyboard, but the songs are now simpler, even if the meanings are deeper.

Just Excellent!.......2005-10-22

It's been a long time coming but it was worth the wait. This whole album is packed with great new music, East Side Story is a great song with a good beat,NotRomeo Not Juliette is the song I listen to on my way to work in the morning and Flying could very well be the song that you start to hear at weddings soon. I am very happy with this purchase.

These were the leftovers?.......2006-07-15

Supposedly some of the songs on this album were tracks that didn't make it onto "Have a Nice Day". Then why is this album better? Real Sugar may be the most infectious track that they have ever done, I can listen to it over and over, even though is is repetitive.

Other standouts are "Looking for Jane" a good midtempo number, "Make My Head Go Pop" and "Center of the Heart"

This album has the ususal mix of up-tempo numbers and ballads. The up-tempo numbers are more dancy than usual but also way better than the previous album. This one rates with, and may be thier best album to date.

Have Roxette grown up too much? .......2006-06-07

I haven't listened to this album as much as the older ones. I think the bests are LOOK SHARP, CRASH BOOM BANG, TOURISM AND JOYRIDE. There are perhaps some more grown up songs on this album. Its a bit of a mixture. It doesn't have the emotional heartfelt ballads of previous albums that really make Roxette but it has more of bubblegum upbeat Rock that does also make Roxette. What is different about the other songs is that they are bit more about grown up sentiments which is nice I guess.
None of these songs really stand out as being the best Roxette ever but they are certainly not the worst either. Its kind of a middle album for me I guess. There could have been more of Per on this album. Not lyrically their best a bit superficial in places. But look out for Little Girl.

Real Suger is a catchy number, Ill give you that, the video is really cool with the muppets. A bit repetitive.
Centre of the Heart - Nice beat. Apparently reminscent of Savage Garden. Roxette came first though. Not the best lyrics ever.
Milk and Toast and Honey - A different kind of song for Roxette. A bit more grown up. Its hard to know whether or not I like this song.
Jefferson - I kinda like this one. Its kind of quirky and nostalgic and slightly dark. Like Cinnamon Street which is one of my all time faves. Someone said it was trying to copy Summer of 69. I don't know about that. Per can do nostalgia by himself I think.
Little Girl - This is one of the better songs on the album. A bit more grown up. Talking about the child within. In fact this song inspired me to write my own song called Little Boy. I like this one.
Looking for Jane - Catchy. I guess. Whose Jane.
Bringing Me Down to My Knees - Schmoozy ballad. Nice song. doesn't have the melancholy of some of their other songs. Maybe a bit cheesy
Make My Head Go Pop - bubblegummy. quirky. dancey. lyrics? "I feed the ducks with a bun only to find me in love with you" Per what were you thinking.
Try - Verse is good enough. Not so sure about the chorus. A bit lacklustre
Fool - good name for a song. But I found it a bit disappointing.
It takes you no time to get there - Now this is a nice song with Per at the helm. About driving out of town. Mature song.
My World My Love My Life - This is a nice enough song.
I don't know I guess the songs don't stand out as much earlier albums, the lyrics aren't as great, not as much heart, not as much depth, passion, are they trying to get too intellectual in their older years. I dunno. Perhaps there are different sentiments being expressed. Perhaps they have grown up, and have lost that childlike wonder and passion that earlier albums had. Perhaps they are trying too hard. All the same its still a nice enough album.

The hooks just don't stop.......2005-04-05

As I listened to this album for the first time, it quickly climbed up my ranking of favorite Roxette albums. By the time the chorus on "Fool" hit, it had reached the level of "Joyride." Then "My World, My Love, My Life" put it over the top.

Although they've done some beautiful ballads, most of my favorite Roxette songs have always been their uptempo tunes. A typical Roxette album is about 75% ballads, but this one is right at 50/50, more to my liking. And without exception, every upbeat song is a worthwhile listen, with only the first song on the album (Real Sugar) falling short of top-notch. The Centre of the Heart and Fool are songs I could probably listen to forever without tiring of their basic melody (the former) or the catchy chorus (the latter). Make My Head Go Pop also has a great melody, while Jefferson and Looking for Jane have the grab-your-ear choruses that make me stop whatever I'm doing to listen. Real Sugar also has a nice melody; its only real drawback is that the chorus grows overly repetitious at the end.

Even some of the ballads were great listens. In particular, My World, My Love, My Life has a haunting, soulful melody that draws you in. Milk and Toast and Honey, and Bringing Me Down to My Knees also have great melodies. The other 3 ballads don't really grab me, but 9 great songs on a single album is a great buy any day. More than worth the price.

Oddly, the tracks are arranged where most of the upbeat songs are even and most of the ballads are odd. And because my favorite ballad (MWMLML) and my least-favorite upbeat song (RS) are the exceptions, the end result is that my favorite tracks are all the even songs.

If this was their last album, they went out on a high note. I hope not, though, as they are clearly aging well.

Roxette gets better with age!.......2005-03-19

Roxette is that rarest of rare musical groups, the kind that stays true to their sound and style. Each of their last two albums, "Room Service" and "Have A Nice Day" have been easily as good as anything they put out in their heyday. And while the new material isn't selling like "Joyride", it's still the same fun, well-crafted, and well-produced Euro-rock that we've come to know and love.

On Room Service, the standout tracks are "Real Sugar", "Centre of the Heart", "Milk and Toast and Honey", "Bringing Me Down To My Knees", and "Fool".

Roxette are just as good as they ever were, only now the mainstream music fan has moved on to their next flavor of the month. Don't join them.

Well worth the cost of the CD. Five stars!

Per Does what he does best, Great Dance/Rock/Pop albums.......2004-02-16

It does not get more Polished and Catchy as this album. That's exactly what I've come to expect from Per, Marie, and Roxette, and this album from 2001 does Not dissapoint. It's Great Pop, Rock, and dance and some country feel in there too.

You get a high dosage of Roxette "sugar" in the first track "Real Sugar", Damn Catchy and danceable Rock Track.

The second track "Center of the Heart" continues with the mixture of Rock and Disco/Synth. So does the fourth track "Jefferson" with Per doing the vocals.

And I think Per totallly Goes Crazy with Rock/Dance on "Make My Head Go Pop", it feels like you're listening to ABBA or A-Teens.
"Fool" is also a Danceable Rock song with as much Catch to it as there can possibly be.

But Dance/Rock is not the only thing on this album. There are some GREAT slower Pop songs and Ballads. These really touch your heart!

"My World, My Love, My Life" - A Beauty of a song.
"Bring Me Down to My Knees" - also a Gorgeous Slow pop song.
"Try Just a Little Bit harder" - Slow, and Beautiful song.
"It Takes you no time to Get Here" - a Great Pop/Rock song.
"Milk, Toast and Honey" - a cute Pop song.
"Little Girl" - Marie wrote this one. A Very Upbeat and Catchy Pop song with some country feel to it.

So this album from 2001 is a Hit Factory, with Hit after another Hit. So what Changed? Nothing! That's what we fans of Rox have come to expect.

Per proves his musical Pop Genius once more.

Overall, if you're a Roxette fan, this is a good CD. It doesn't go anywhere they haven't been before - it is, actually, a step backwards from "Have a Nice Day" in terms of musical experimentation. "Real Sugar" and "The Centre of the Heart..." are standouts among the 12 tracks contained on the standard release...BUT [bonus track] "Entering the Heart" steals the show!!! I can't believe this was left off of the North American release - it raises goosebumps the way that "Fading Like a Flower" did the first time I heard it.

A great album.......2001-06-25

Roxette's 'Room Service' is a great album. I highly recommend it to any die hard Roxette fan or to anyone who appreciates good music. Their uptempo songs are brilliantly done, and the ballads are wonderfully melodic. Out of all the tracks on the album, there is only one that I didn't instantly fall in love with, although it is growing on me. Overall, an excellent effort. Roxette keeps on rockin'!!!

"Room service, please...".......2001-05-11

The Scandinavian powerpop duo is back in 2001 offerring...well, Room Service (pun intended!).

12 tracks of what the fans ordered. 12 tracks of unmistakable Roxette pop. 12 tracks that will once again stand the test of time.

Room Service, unlike the 1999 release Have a Nice Day, is more guitar orientated, one of the prerequisites of the fans. No wonder tracks like "Real Sugar" (the album opener and 2nd single), Looking for Jane, It takes you no time to get here (a definite Dawson's Creek soundtrack choice for the future), Jefferson and Fool are PACKED with the guitar production and sound that has been a trademark of theirs since the 80's.

The 1st single, "The Centre of the Heart (Is a suburb to the brain)" gives the impression of a dance orientated album, which is not the case. Some songs do include the right kind of thumping which all good dance tracks are made of, but with a twist: here we have the guitars bleeding as well. "Make my head go pop" will definitely sit right up there with club and radio classics like Madonna's "Ray of Light" and Alice DJ's "Better off Alone", mixing guitars with pop with drumloops. Awesome.

The ballads on the album are extraordinary! "Milk, toast and honey" has already been snatched up as the theme music for a Brazillian soap opera. A song that can be named in the same sentence as "It must have been love", "Listen to you heart" and "Wish I could fly".

Sophomore Country Album.......2002-03-12

The Oaks debuted on the country scene with "Y'all Come Back Saloon," and continued full-blowin with "Room Service" (I have yet to figure out the significance of that title!!!). With this effort, the Boys tried more to distance themselves from the "hand-clappin' gospel sound" with more contemporary harmonies and styles (although one can't help compare "Lots of Matchbooks" to an old southern gospel standard). It also seems that they become a bit more risque with their material in "Lay Down Your Sword and Shield." The oddity of the recording, however, is the inclusion of "I'll Be True To You" (originally part of "Saloon") ABC Records was in such a hurry to put out a second album that rather than continue pushing "Saloon," they just dumped the track onto this album, making the album 11 songs long (unusual for those days), and also giving it an extra selling point (the original album stickers had "I'll Be True To You" pasted all over it).

Marketing methods aside, the album is a stronger effort for the Boys. Key tracks include "Callin' Baton Rouge" (the same song that Garth Brooks would do 17 years later), "It Could Have Been Ten Years Ago," and "If There Were Only Time For Love." Definitely worth the money, especially for the low price it's available for today!

Somebody misjudged Bryan's chances for chart success..........2006-03-14

One of the reviwers said that the leadoff single "Open Road" wasn't the type of song that could get him back on the charts anywhere...guess no one told the Canadian audience, since MuchMusic, MuchMoreMusic and five different radio formats had that single in ther #1 spot not very long after its release. The only mistake wasn't making that the leadoff single here in the US, nothing against "This Side of Paradise", but "Open Road" was a HUGE single. the rest of the album isn't too shabby either. Get the overseas version and enjoy the bonus track "Blessing in Disguise". SOLID album, and my only other question is, why wasn't the song "Diana" included on the "Anthology" double disc?

Not the comeback I had hoped for.......2005-02-19

Very few artists have been able to reach more than one musical peak. Bryan Adams is one of the few that managed to reach two musical peaks with "Reckless" in 1984 and "Waking up the neighbors" in 1991. With the release of the fabulous single "Here I am" in 2002, I imagined it was the precursor to his third musical peak.

Unfortunately, "Room Service" does not do any justice to Bryan's older material. The album kicks off to a fantastic start with "East Side Story" - a return to the rock-based roots that launched him into international stardom. Unfortunately, this trend does not prevail throughout the rest of the album. The album gets blander with each song.

"Open road" - the first single off the album is not bad but not the type of song that could make a dent on musical charts anywhere. Bryan should have released "East Side Story" as his first single.

Bryan Adams is obviously a very talented musician but "Room Service" is not a reflection of what he is capable of. He can do way better.

This Needs To Be Released In The US.......2005-01-31

I've been a Bryan Adams fan since '91 and I was shocked to find out only a week ago that he had released a new album months ago and I didn't know about it! (I live in the US where this album has yet to be released. Thank God for Amazon!)
My initial reaction to this new album was, "This is lame." But of course, this being Bryan Adams, that reaction was expected. Don't get me wrong, I love this guy's work and I have all of his albums, but you have to admit they all contain a certain degree of lameness!
Anyway, after a second listen, I must say that my attitude has drastically changed! This album rocks! Not in that "let's blow the roof off this place, party all night" kind of way. There's no "The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You" or "Cuts Like A Knife". These heavier types of songs are replaced with a more orgainic, laid-back sound that is just as energizing and fun to sing along to as any of his previous work. Think newer Bon Jovi combined with the southern, country side of Sheryl Crow.
In typical Bryan Adams fashion, the lyrics are very straightforward. Although many of the songs deal with loneliness and things not going quite your way, they still send out the message that even though life might not be so great right now, it is going to get better.
I have only listened to this album three times, but the one low spot I have found so far has to be "Flying", which is the second single. Although not a horrible song, this track is weak in comparison to other Adams ballads. The stand-out tracks to me are "She's A Little Too Good For Me" and "Room Service".
All in all, this is a great album that you should definitely check out. In my opinion this is the strongest album Adams has released in the past ten years. And I have a feeling it's going to be a great album to drive to!

good, but a little uninspiring.......2005-01-26

I have listened to Bryan since i was in the 6th grade, and only in the last 2 years have truly found some of his best music. Bryan's work with the Uk dance group Chicane has been awesome. Chicane did an awesome remix of Cloud #9, and his work on East Side Story (chicane Version) and Don't give up, which are some of the best vocal songs he's ever done. But now to Room Service. Coming off the other stuff I purchased this album to hear how his version of East Side Story was and it does rock, but unfortunatley there are only 3 or 4 really rock moments on this cd, and the rest is left to poppy ballads that don't come close to comparing to his earlier work. I will say that the title track is awesome. Harkens back to the old days, and songs like other side of paradise, and open road really crank. I hope that in the future we can hear a full collaboration of tunes from Bryan and Chicane.

Pop Rock You Can Appreciate.......2005-01-16

I'm a metalhead and a classic rock drinker and yet somewhere in between the Judas Priest's and AC/DC's of the REAL music world, I have come to appreciate Bryan Adams as a musician and as a songwriter.

Now before I bust out my 2 cents on Room Service, I have a little beef in regards to reviewer Jason Stein. Although I agree in what Stein says with most of the Room Service tracks (I'll get to that in a few) I strongly disagree with his take on a couple of my top 4 Adams albums 'Waking Up The Neighbors' and 'Into The Fire'.
First off, 'Waking Up The Neighbors' is by far 'over-long and bloated'. For a mindless puppet that was basing their lives around MTV all day back in '91, then I could see your reasoning that any album that has over 10 tracks is sure not worth their time.

IMO, 'Waking Up The Neighbors' is one of Adams most complete albums to date. Now, aside from the odd slaphappy pop tune, the guitar riffs were in solid rotation on every track including the strong and heavy-bottom 'Heaven'. Over-long and bloated? Well possibly for MTV or anyone who has a severe case of A.D.D to solid musicianship.

And as for his '87 album 'Into The Fire', many fans were initially disappointed by the sound and direction that Adams chose for this disc, but in hindsight this material is quite possibly the strongest testament to his own musical growth and maturity as a musician. The vocally charged 'Rebel' was a favorite tune of mine from the album.

As for Room Service itself as a whole. Well, you have one terribly sappy recycled ballad `Flying', a strong title track, 'Open Road' and 'East Side Story' display to us that Adams still has that crunch that usually places him into more of the 'rock' than 'pop' side.

The only real downfall of Room Service is that Bryan didn't really portray any real creativity or experimentation (I know I know, pop rock experimentation?!) with his guitar chops and I also felt that the drums/percussion didn't really pump me up or drive me as much as previous Adams albums have done.

In conclusion, Room Service for sure wouldn't take the cake in terms of my favorite Bryan Adams album (You Want It, You Got It) but it does do its job for today's pop rock in terms of catchiness and rock ability.

Rehashed Lounge.......2003-05-10

If you started on your journey into ambient / electronic / house / lounge "ecclectic" music by falling in love with the Cafe del Mar, Real Ibiza, Om Lounge, Carte Blanche, or Thievery Corp series, you'll find that there are now about a million copy cats around who bring nothing new to the CD player and don't even stack up to their predecessors. This is one of them.

There's just nothing interesting or original about this set.
It's like going back to your favorite vacation destination and finding bad weather or overcrowded beaches...

At times this CD seems to actually get going into something cool, especially the end of disc 2 (Kool & The Gang's "Summer Madness" blending into "A Thing Of Beauty" by DJ Trax) and there definately are other nice moments along the way. The mixing is superb, but unfortunately the song selection brings us some banal stuff to disrupt the flow (Aim's "Sail" -ughh- and many others that stick to your ears like so much wax).

If you want the real deal, try "Real Ibiza V, The Sun Lounge", or "Private Lounge 3"...

I have to say, of the downtempo/nu-jazz/whatever you want to call it, this is some of the best I have heard. The jazz/electronic smooth grooves just keep on rolling without being overdone (such as some of the later Buddha Bars) or redundant. It is well mixed, well thought out, it is well done and that is rare to find. I know I will get a lot of use out of these CDs.
