Focusing on Greg Lake's overly pretty radio tunes ("Lucky Man," "In the Beginning," etc.), this well-programmed single volume becomes almost definitive by finding room for the only Carl Emerson opus that stands the test of time--the still-powerful 20-minute suite from Tarkus. --Jeff Bateman

4 out of 5 stars Very good choice of tracks.......2007-04-17

If you want to discover ELP, this cd has all you need, their most well known ballads, their classics and their bests tracks !
A best of is always not complete, but this one has almost everything.
I would have included "Peter Gun" instead of "I believe in Father Christmas" Overall, a very good "best of" !

4 out of 5 stars ELP for President.......2006-11-25

I've been reading the reviews for this ELP disc (and others) and I must say that I am thrilled that other Amazon customers, including young people, are proudly proclaiming their love and respect for this much-maligned band. I'm 35 and have found much to love about ELP since around the age of 12 or 13. I'm not strictly a prog guy, either...I appreciate everything from Beck to the Pixies to Scott Walker, Lee Hazlewood, Bob Wills, Black Sabbath, Pere Ubu, and lots in between. 50 Cent? You won't find the number "50" or the word "Cent" in my house.

Good music is simply good music. Tracks like "Karn Evil 9" and "Knife Edge" still sound, for lack of a better word, wicked. Plus, any "greatest hits" package that finds room for a 20-minute blowout like "Tarkus" is simply knickers with me.

3 out of 5 stars good, but would have liked more vocals.......2006-08-20

some very good songs, but not enough vocals

5 out of 5 stars I am 14 years old, and I know good music when I see it.......2006-04-13

I found ELP through Amazon, I had bought a Jethro Tull album, I was recommended Yes! and then after researching progressive rock, I found ELP.
I think the best quality of ELP's music is its replayabillity. Although "Lucky Man" is a relatively generic hit, the musical underscore is very creative. I find myself listening to "Pirates" over and over again. "Pirates" is probably my favorite song on the compilation. It is so well composed, Lake's vocals are so brilliant, the melody is perfect, and the solos are truly inspiring. The song is dreamy, it places the listener in another world.
To me "Tarkus" is only alright in comparison to "Pirates." By no means does it make the song bad, just not as good as their other epic. I don't understand people's problem with the song "Black Moon" it is a catchy, but simple beat, with ambigious lyrics that the listener can intrepet for himself. "I Believe in Father Christmas" is another fine, simpler sort of song. It is more commercial than most of their other work, but catchy nonetheless.
Karn Evil 9 is a classic, as is Brain Salad Surgery, Jerusalem, etc. The Great Gates of Kiev is a little bizzare, but enjoyable.
ELP worth listening to just for Emerson's keyboards and synthesizers. Lake's vocals are unique(sound like the original incarnation of King Crimson? Yes they do, because he was in it.)
I recommend this forgotten gem for anyone interested in classic rock.

3 out of 5 stars Not "The Very Best Of...".......2006-06-15

This is good to get if you are not the ELP fan and just like their acoustic songs like everybody else. However, if you are the ELP fan, you will think,"Why isn't Tarkus in here, or The Endless Enigma, or Hoedown, or Take a Pebble, or...(and the list goes on and on). If you want a better "Best of", go for "The Best of Emerson Lake & Palmer" or "ELP: The Atlantic Years".

PROs: You get the great acoustic songs: Lucky Man, From the Beginning, Still... You Turn Me On, and C'est La Vie. And you get great rock songs like Pirates, the full Fanfare For The Comman Man, Knife-Edge, Karn Evil 9 1st Impression Part 2, Jerusalem, and Trilogy.

CONs: It lacks a lot of songs. Also, the live versions here aren't all that great. An ELP fan would know why this is not "The Very Best Of Emerson Lake & Palmer".

Look for better "Best of"s than this one.

3 out of 5 stars I didn't even know this existed, but now I know why........2006-04-19

No Tarkus.

ELP is a band that aren't very approachable if you aren't a diehard fan. Tarkus is the song that sums up the bands eclectic power, high energy hooks, ridiculously strong musicianship, and over the top egos. To include the more lighthearted Pirates in leu of this is a crime.

That being said, the collection isn't half bad, it just isn't half good, either. A two disc compilation would better serve the band justice. There just isn't enough space on one cd to accurately sample each stage of ELP well enough for a good understanding.

Of course, newcomers will find the early hits Lucky Man and Knife Edge welcome, powerful, and catchy. From there, we continue to a nice set of Brain Salad Surgery hits, arguably the bands strongest era. Next, the best of the sketchy Works era is featured, with Still... You Turn Me On, Lake's own ballad, and the band's poppy take on Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man. The cd rounds out with a few live songs. However, the two featured really don't do ELP's live set justice.

Over this, I would recommend Rhino's Best Of set. Additionally, for the newcomer, I urge you to by "Welcome Back My Friends..." for the strongest possible live experience. While the quality of WBMF is sketchy at points, it's the best representation of the band's strong live show experience. For the diehard fans, you owe it to yourself to pick up the boxset, Return of the Manticore.

All in all, a fair attempt at a friendly compilation... but there's better choices out there, so don't overlook them.

5 out of 5 stars Music Era History.......2005-09-03

This greatest hits collection has lots of songs that many of you would listen to and not even realise that ELP sang the song. The recording of the cd seams to be of studio quality and you should enjoy the cd if you like music from there era. Go ahead and buy this cd to allow your self to experience music that will not be duplicated any time soon. This is music from a time of people writing there own songs and having meaning behind them. The love for music is noticable, they wern't doing this for a paycheck from a corporate record company. My personal favorate is From the Beginning. To truly enjoy music one must have respect for all other forms of music.

3 out of 5 stars Very Best is a Mixed Bag.......2005-07-21

What, no Tarkus? For those who love ELP, you don't need this album because you have everything they made. For those that hate them, you probably can't enjoy any of their songs other than radio friendly "Lucky Man." For the middle-of-the-road fan of ELP, like me, this album is something of a pleasure as well as a disappointment. Most of the songs here are solid, but tracks 9-13 are so different from one another (with the early-70s "Hut of Baba" much better and energetic than the later 70s version of "Fanfare") that they sound as if they were done by different bands. It is a tribute to ELP's ecclecticism that they could cover anything from Henry Mancini to Mussorgsky. But I'm sure there's more interesting material on the shelf than their cover of the "Peter Gunn" theme. And the compliers of this CD should have included something from "Tarkus." They also should have listed the songs chronologically rather than have the last track, from the early 70s, placed after their later concert material. And while I like all the songs from "Brain Salad Surgery" included here (tracks 5-8), they are more enjoyable in the context of the entire "BSS" album. And from a sound point of view, there is a noticeable drop in the volume of the CD when it gets to the BSS tracks. The first few songs sound sharp and crisp, but "Jerusalem" sounds muffled. Perhaps some better mixing would have benefited this CD. From what I've heard, fans of ELP, or those interested in their music, would be best advised to get their longer "Best of" available on Rhino that includes music from "Tarkus." Since I only have one album by ELP on CD (BSS), I will play this one from time to time. But ELP were really an album band, not a singles band. Best to absorb them an album at a time rather than fool around with Best of compliations.

3 out of 5 stars There's Good Pretentious...and Then There's....These Guys........2005-07-08

I'm sorry, but I just cannot get into this band much despite their obvious similarities to the Moody Blues and Yes. I also can't deny the obvious influence they've had on American bands like Kansas and Starcastle, and the possibility that they helped shape crossover classical music such as it is today.

While I like songs like "Lucky Man," "Pirates," and "Fanfare for the Common Man" well enough, I admittedly purchased this collection almost solely for the primitive and sensual latin jazz ballad "From the Beginning," which I truly feel is one of the greatest classic rock ballads of all time. The trouble? I could only hope they would have more tracks on the collection like that, but the more lowkey ones like "C'est La Vie" just don't measure up to it. Other songs I do like go on too long, and still others are so over the top in addition to length, you will be shrieking for the Tylenol long before the disc is half over. Now, I realize these guys are great musicians, but Keith Emerson goes beyond his classical training skills into an area that makes most of his synth playing sound like nothing more than widescale intergalactic warfare. This is deliberate pretentiousness most people can live without unless REAAAAAAW-REEEEAAAAAW-SCREEEEEEEECH distorted at megadecibels is your idea of entertainment. It's not mine, but nobody has the same opinion, so good luck to you, and glad you enjoy them.

Still, I cannot dismiss them lightly for some of their very noteworthy contributions to the rock world, nor for the fact that they introduced a generation to the concept of taking classical music structures seriously. For this they get a gracious three, but I still prefer their most ardent pupils, pre-Audio Slave Kansas to them.

4 out of 5 stars Good live songs, bad live sound.......2006-11-20

This 2 CD package of Emerson, Lake and Plamer in concert features a bunch of thier hits, live on stage. Although the songs are great, the sound quality is rather diminished, becuase of the fact that they were all bootleged. This was my first ELP CD and I ound that it was very good. I got it used at only $ 8.00, and I saw that it had 2 disks and I thought that it would be good to have because it's 2 disks of pure live ELP, and it was such a low price. I'd say if you are looking for some good, raw, live ELP and you don't want to spend some hundred odd dollars on the Manticore Box Sets, get this because it's a best of live, and those good.

Made in UK in 2003, Serial# MCCD-520, Playing Time 66:28

What we have here, folks, is nothing else than a sampler from the 2-disc set "Then & Now"; while the original release featured a different concert on each disc (the 1974 California Jam concert on 1, and material from the 1997-8 tour on the other), "Fanfare" blends tracks from the 2 concerts on 1 disc.

Of the 12 tracks, tracks 2,5,6,7 and 8 are from the Cal Jam concert (the others are from the 1997-8 tour); but because the recording quality is vastly different between the 2, I found it a bit annoying to not have the 2 "sections" separated.

That being said, the performances are quite interesting in their own right. If you don't have "Then & Now", perhaps "Fanfare" will entice you to get it; personally, I suggest you take the plunge and grab "Then & Now" instead: it's over 2 hours of musical history in the making!

An awesome trip down memory lane. Somewhat expensive as CD's go but well worth it.

Exactly what it says on the label, this collects the finest moments from Castle Music's acclaimed series of ELP official live bootlegs. Six years of classic American performances are assembled across these two CDs, from 1971's 'The Barbarian' to 1977's reprise of their worldwide hit, 'Fanfare For The Common Man'. Whether you treat it as a taster for the full Bootleg Box Series, or a virtual 'greatest hits', Best Of The Bootlegs captures the ultimate prog trio at their peak. 2002.

3 out of 5 stars Really pretty bad...........2005-05-20

I have to agree that if you are not a rabid, insanely crazed fan of ELP ,then this is one of thee last things you should possibly consider buying.
The sound quality on both discs hardly ever elevates beyond the point of annoying...in that the sound is mostly so bad that some of the instruments are almost inaudible.Which ,for me, negates the usefullness of the versions of the tracks included.
One thing I can say is that it was certainly lucky for me that this was released ,because now I know that I definitely DO NOT want the 7 & 8 CD Bootleg Boxes offered that this stuff is compiled from.
I can use this as an example, though. The two Tangerine Dream Boxes of "bootleg" performances are of such a high quality compared to this drek that I am even more happy for their release. Sad,huh?
Wanna hear ELP live? Then get Welcome Back My Friends...(the 2CD set) or The Live release from the 1977 tour...now they are very enjoyable!
This is just too dismal in sound quality.
Is it really "The Best of The Bootlegs"??

2 out of 5 stars Beaten by the real thing.......2002-12-12

As a fan of the band, of the songs chosen for this compilation, of live performances, and of rare recordings, I should be delighted with "Best of the Bootlegs." Except that the sound quality is awful . . . and I don't mean "audiophile" awful. I mean, "Wha??" awful. I've heard many a bootleg with far superior sound.

I would suggest getting the "Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends," "Works Live," or "King Biscuit Flower Hour" sets first. All are from legitimate sources, and the first two together offer a pretty complete portrait of ELP live in the 70s. "KBFH" is a two-disc set combining a "Works Live"-era performance (from the latter part of the tour) on the first disc with a 1974 version of 'Karn Evil 9' (as well as multimedia material) on the second disc. It's a worthwhile addition to the other two live albums because, unlike "Works Live," the first disc is without an orchestra and includes a version of 'Pirates.'

5 out of 5 stars Almost the Best of the Bootlegs.......2002-09-08

This is a gem for those not buying the two (all in all) 15CD Bootleg boxes! Escpecially if you think extended and very different improvisations of the same tunes, and eccentric performances, may not quite be your thing - and you still enjoy ELP and progressive adventurous music.

On this 2CD you'll get the essence of ELP live in the 70's, even if the bootleg sound is not quite up to their incredible live recordings "Pictures at an Exhibition" and "Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends". Here, finally, you'll get to hear the pieces left out from other live recordings, like Barbarian, Knife Edge and The Endless Enigma.

The only misgiving is that the Pictures performance from Buffalo in 74 is not included. That was the occasion when Keith Emerson again managed to surprise Mr. Bob Moog (whose headquarter was in Buffalo) with what his instrument could do.

Still, whether you're into covers, linar notes or even the music, this very much shows why ELP was the greatest live band of them all in the 70's, surpassing Floyd, Stones and Zeppelin, even if one forgets about that carpet.

          3 out of 5 stars ELP Bootlegs.......2002-05-14

Well it makes me mad that they came out with this CD after I already bought the other two boxsets but that's the way things go I guess!? Anyway this CD is worth getting if you are a diehard ELP fan. It has some of their best performances from the 70's which was their best years.
