Writer/director Charles Shyer's reinvention of the beloved 60's morality tale about a serial-womanizer's quest for meaning in life is musically rooted in a voice that's lived the experience: Mick Jagger. And if the Stones' oft-cliched frontman seems a decidedly left-field choice as film scorer, his chemistry with collaborator/former Eurythmics musical spark Dave Stewart yields a surprisingly warm, often introspective slate of songs and atmospheric underscore. Jagger's solo work has often been muddied by chasing the pop production zeitgeist of the moment, but his efforts with Stewart here largely turn on a stripped-down, organic folk-blues sensibility that can't escape mostly positive parallels with the Stones' own acoustic oeuvre. Soul singer Joss Stone turns in a masterfully bluesy cover of the original film's hit Bacharach-David theme song that belies her teenage years (also interpolating it into Stewart/Jagger's "Wicked Time," which also features noted Jamaican rapper "Nadz" Seid), while Sheryl Crow duets with Jagger on the single version of the song-score's thematic anchor, "Old Habits Die Hard." -- Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Let's make it up, let's make it up now!.......2006-10-25

I don't care what the critics thought of this movie. If you are a soundtrack fan like me, then add this one to your collection for sure! Even with ole Mick singing 10,000 versions of Old Habits Die Hard, the different duets are enough to make each version stand on its own. I also love the Christmas feel of #6, Lonely Without You. Blind Leading The Blind (two versions) are also excellent! Darkness of Your Love gets me up on the floor to dance along every time. This is great background music for a chill party or if you are spending a night alone on the computer, or reading, or writing. I listen to it while painting. Have never even been a Jagger fan before, but I'll keep playing this one again and again no doubt!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.........2006-09-19

I love this CD...You don't even need to mention the movie!!! Of course in the movie you get to see some very beautiful women!!...But the music in the CD is very,...very good. So good it can stand alone and shine...Mick, Joss and the rest are simply fantastic ..Worth your money..

3 out of 5 stars I gave it 3 stars because it is misleading..........2006-08-24

I listened to the entire soundtrack and the music is decent. I am not a huge jagger fan but like the sound and syle of the music.

-HOWEVER-
BE careful and BE warned: This may not be what you are looking for if you just watched the movie:
Why to Movie/ Record Studios do this? Where is the great MUSIC from the MOVIE? You know, The Iseley Brothers' (For the Love of You) and Teddy Pendegrass'(Love TKO)songs???

And WHERE is the one song that everyone keeps asking about, but is mysteriously missing from the "soundtrack": The jazzy, cool song where Alfie and (Liz)Susan Sarandon are drinking in her apartment and seducing each other...? BTW, The name of that song is :

"The Beat Goes On"
By The Buddy Rich Band

(Originallay by Sonny and Cher, believe it or not!)
-You're welcome, 'cause I know you have been looking for it too :)You can find it on Buddy Rich Band compilations here on Amazon, there are several versions ( Live/ studio, etc.). I love the web.

Guys, give the people what they want and stop making it so hard to find things. The reason you used that song in the movies and the others listed above is because they are awesome ( even you thought so). If you didn't want to pay some licensing fee for those songs to have them on the score or if you have some exclusive deal with Mick Jagger to be the only one listed as the composer of the "soundtrack" then make a supplemental "SCORE" or give us the info so we can find it.

Again, I like Jagger and the music on this disc is good, its just misleading, and in that sense, disappointing. Now go get that Buddy Rich Band song you wanted in the first place and stop wasting time reading reviews about this "soundtrack".

5 out of 5 stars song not on soundtrack.......2006-08-01

there is this one song that is in the movie but not on the soundtrack, when alfie and lynette (his friend's girlfriend) are playing this game/taking shots....it's the song that is played on the juke box in the movie...i was wondering if anyone knew what it was?

2 out of 5 stars Answer for "Ronii".......2006-07-20

Not sure about the first song you were asking about ( where he is in the bar where everyone is dancing) but the second song you were looking for (where he is playing pool with his friends girlfriend) is called "For the love of you". Performed by the Isley Brothers. Hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars "The Summer Smiles, The Summer Knows".......2006-01-07

"When Monica Mancini set out to record this retrospective of songs from films, she clearly had her passions in order. Monica comes by her affinity for the medium honestly, having grown up in a house permeated with some of the best film music in history, from the pen of her incredibly prolific father, Henry. So it is no surprise that this collection has all the artistry, pathos, and musicality that it so deserves." ~ Dave Grusin, Liner Notes - 2002 ~

Dave Grusin, an expert arranger, conductor, pianist, film scorer himself has described this album so perfectly. The choice of material in this CD is impeccable with Monica Mancini's graceful interpretations and not to mention the flawlessly beautiful arrangements by Torrie Zito, John Calandrelli, Michael Lang, Patrick Williams, George Doering, Ray Ellis, Harvey Cohen and John Frizzell. There are twelve theme songs from various remarkable films in this recording and most of the tracks were backed up by an orchestra with the exception of a few.

The theme song from the movie "Summer of '42" penned by the creative husband-and-wife-team of Alan & Marilyn Bergman and composer Michel Legrand "The Summer Knows" is one of my top choices from this collection. Splendidly arranged by Michael Lang and Harvey Cohen on string section, she renders this timeless song so true to its essence and making it the most beautiful version, bar none!

Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "Alfie" (from the movie of the same title), is a moving song accompanied only by the sublime piano playing of Michael Lang. She has an exquisitely beautiful voice, the kind that still shines without the trimmings and backing up of an orchestra, (the kind that still glows even on A Cappella singing). Another affecting song and a favorite of mine is "Too Late Now," a Burton Lane and Alan Jay Lerner treasure and theme from the movie "Royal Wedding." The orchestral arrangement was done by Torrie Zito, a fine pianist/arranger/conductor who worked briefly with the legendary musical icon, Frank Sinatra. I loved the way he injected a classical touch on his arrangement, almost sounding like one of Claude Debussy's masterpieces. I would say that this is one of the best tracks. Ditto with another Torrie Zito arrangement, Johnny Mandel and Paul Webster's "The Shadow of Your Smile" from the movie "The Sandpiper." Ms. Mancini gave these classics the retire-the-trophy-treatments and made them her very own.

The lovely opener, Ennio Morricone and Gregg Field's "Cinema Paradiso," arranged by Jorge Calandrelli, is also one of the standouts. Another beauty is "I'll Never Say Goodbye" from the movie "The Promise" with piano accompaniment by Michael Lang. The finale "Over The Rainbow" from "The Wizard of Oz" is simply divine with orchestral arrangement by Ray Ellis.

This recording produced by Ms. Mancini's musician husband, Gregg Field, truly showed off not only the singer's vocal artistry, but her classy and elegant style of singing. Thank you Ms. Mancini for your wonderful gift of music. Music to enjoy forever!

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent Monica!.......2004-06-28

My favorite song of all time is "The Shadow of Your Smile" from the movie "The Sandpiper". Until now, the 2 best versions of it were by Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett. By FAR, this is THE best version of that song. Pure, without "vocal gymnastics", screaming, yelping or other artificial "stylings".. here it is sung as it was written, perfectly performed with beautiful orchestration. The rest of the album is no less miraculous. It is stunning. "A Day in the Life of a Fool", "Cinema Paradiso" and the haunting and tender "Theme from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" are just as lavish and well-crafted. Okay Monica, now could you release one album a year instead of one album every 3 years? Pleeeeassee??

5 out of 5 stars She's chocolate and creme!.......2004-01-29

Seeing Monica Mancini on stage singing the theme from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, hearing Gregg Field's drums, seeing the multi-media film clip behind her... is like having chocolate and creme!

Monica does not belt you to death, she does not yell at you, she does not punch notes into your being... she soothes you to her, lures you, with a voice that has been hidden for years.

Her voice is perfect in pitch, tone, and her ability to hit every single note as if she were born to sing. Clearly having inherited talent from her mom Ginny and her dad Henry.

On this cd I love the way she embraces other composers songs..."Baby Mine" just one of them. I about melted when she sang that song.

She has a great sense of humor on stage, is spontaneous, and is herself.

She has a great secure personality and stage persona and she has the family roots to give you a chill in your bones when she shares them with you in stories and song.

Hearing her sing live is like being home!

5 out of 5 stars Astonishing.......2003-09-04

I sample A LOT of jazz vocalists (for some reason most contemporary jazz vocalists seem to be female) but initially dismissed Monica Mancici because she's the child of a famous father. Henry was very classy and as accomplished as musicians get, and such qualities rarely get passed down the line. What a mistake. I only heard her Mercer album because it was -- thankfully -- being played in a store I was visiting. I bought it, loved it, and was primed for this collection. A solid Five Stars. There's new stuff here (for me) and old songs done splendidly. Over The Rainbow, aside from its original iconic take by "Judy," has been covered hundreds of times. And Monica's take? Quite simply as good as any. With this release I've recognized what I love about Monica's voice: Aside from being simply perfect technically, her voice glows like a crackling fireplace! I mourned the recent passing of Rosemary Clooney, and now feel that there's a relatively new vocalist who I can follow for many years. Live or recorded, I'll be there ...

5 out of 5 stars Monica's Latest is the best yet.......2003-06-04

Sorry, but I don't worry about the nuts and bolts of every particular detail of an album. I play what I enjoy and Monica's albums bring me that enjoyment. Cinema Paradiso has rarely left my CD Player. I'm only sorry she appears not to have a web page. Where someone like Michael Jackson or Dixie Chicks are all over the Internet, virtually no information is available concerning Monica Mancini. It's impossible to find a concert schedule. I hope she produces another album soon, I've worn out her others.

5 out of 5 stars "top film scores of the 1960's ~ Percy Faith".......2004-02-18

If you are a collector of Percy Faith, you must run out to your local music store and pick this one up ~ "Plays The Academy Award Winner Born Free and Other Great Movie Themes" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 9450 in 1967) and "Windmills of Your Mind" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 9835 in 1969) ~ following the formula of previous Columbia Records releases featuring Faith's classic style of sweeping strings and haunting arrangements, they've come up with two more winners.

Master of arranging, Faith's formula is so natural in keeping the arrangements fresh and new with his distinctive style ~ his tasteful treatment always highlights the quality of the composition ~ ultimately making them a hit all over again. Remember the days when you could turn on the radio and hear Percy Faith with many familiar pop standards ~ when you put this compact disc on your player, get ready for the "Percy Faith Touch" sprinkled with pure magic over the orchestration and leaves you simply in that unforgettable mood.

Top performances inclusive for the twenty two tracks of film score themes ~ "A MAN AND A WOMAN" (Barouh/Lai), "A TIME FOR LOVE" (Webster/Mandel), "ALFIE"(David/Bacharach), "AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME" (Lionel Bart), "BORN FREE"(John Barry), "CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG" (Richard M. Sherman/Robert B. Sherman), "ELVIRA'S THEME" (Percy Faith), "FOR LOVE OF IVY" (Russell/Quincy Jones), "THEME FROM "THE FOX" (Lalo Schlfrin), "FUNNY GIRL" (Merrill/Styne), "GEORGY GIRL"(Dale/Springfield), "THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER" (Peggy Lee/David Grusin), "HOW ARE THINGS IN GLOCCA MORRA?"(Harburg/Lane), "THE LION IN THE WINTER"(John Barry), "SONG FROM "THE OSCAR" (Evans/Livingston/Percy Faith), "THEME FROM "THE SAND PEPPLES" (Bricusse/Goldsmith), "SOMEWHERE MY LOVE(Lara's Theme from "Dr. Zhivago")"(Webster/Jarre), "STAR" (Cahn/Van Heusen), "THIS IS MY SONG" (Charles Chaplin), "THIS HOTEL" (Keating/Quine), "THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND" and "THE WISHING DOLL" (David/Bernstein) ~ notice two of the selections were composed by the man himself Percy Faith! Impressive line up of top movie songs that will surely satisfy the appetite of all "film-score-buffs" and Percy Faith fans...gotta love it!

While Sonny Rollins's saxophone solos epitomized his best free-flowing improvisational ideas, he let the story of Michael Caine's philandering character determine the mood of this 1966 soundtrack. But knowing the movie's plot is not essential to hearing how this disc is a unique part of Rollins's oeuvre. A long-standing individualist, Rollins worked with director Lewis Gilbert to devise a narrative, and then conductor Oliver Nelson wrote arrangements based on his charts. Rollins is famous for his small groups, but here he leads an 11-piece band and gives considerable space to guitarist Kenny Burrell. The collaboration embellishes Rollins's playing, which was as strong in the mid-'60s as in his more celebrated years. And "Alfie's Theme" has become an unlikely jazz standard. --Aaron Cohen

5 out of 5 stars what's it all about? sonny........2007-05-27

undoubtably one of the recordings i would want with me on a desert isle or any other place of exile. the 60s, jazz orchestras as soundtracks did not do this music or any other music justice, unless it got the movieviewer to the record shop. the music on vinyl was...well, 60s orchestra, maybe dated, though i rather say fixed in time as what jazz orchestration was, and one of the most popular jazz orchestra leaders was oliver nelson. on alfie his orchestra accompanies the tenor of sonny rollins. you have to keep in mind a concerto to appreciate what's going on between rollins and the orchestra. rollins masterfully holds his own, his sound as grand as the orchestra.

i've commented much on the orchestra because if anyone has a reservation about this recording it would be about the orchestration taking space away from sonny rollins' playing. and it doesn't. sonny rollins here is just brilliant, and the compositions on the recording open a new vista to the film.

5 out of 5 stars BUY IT FOR ALFIE.......BUT LISTEN TO.......2006-03-03

I FIRST HEARD THIS "CUT" IN 1967 WHEN IT WAS ON VIYNL. I WAS ALL AGLOW OVER THE TITLE TUNE "ALFIE". DIONNE WARWICK HAD THE LYRICAL VERSION OUT AND SONNY REALLY DOES THIS TUNE JUSTICE TOO.SEEING THE MOVIES HELPS YOU TO GET A FEEL FOR THIS MUSIC. ALFIE ASK THE AGE OLD QUESTION " WHAT IS LIFE REALLY ABOUT" ? AND THE KILLER TUNE FOR THIS ALBUM REALLY IS " HE'S YOUNGER THAN YOU ARE". WHEN A GIGOLO OR ANY MAN IS TOLD THAT BY A WOMAN, HE WILL BE CRUSHED. "HE'S YOUNGER THAN YOU ARE" IS SUCH A SMOOTH BALLAD BY SONNY.
IF YOU LIKE SONNY ROLLINS, HELL YOU WILL LOVE THIS CD.

      3 out of 5 stars Golly Gosh!.......2005-10-07

I'll gladly admit that Sonny was in top form on this date, and it's one of his best ever albums. It is loads better than some of the crap I've given the big old ***** treatment to- BUT- and this is a big BUT- the title track is so catchy it has been stuck in my head for over a decade. I am sick of walking around with the dang thing digging it's talons into my gray matter, and as much as I love it- I PRAY IT WILL GO AWAY! Catchy like some crazy virus. BEWARE!

      5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2004-11-23

One of the great jazz albums I picked and definitely one of the first I grew up. Sonny Rollins has been the next endeavor I listen to in jazz since Chuck Mangione was one of the first jazz endeavors I got influenced in jazz. Then after him, I got into Miles, Donald Byrd, Satchmo, Duke, Count, Coltrane, Bird, Mingus, Lady Day, Q, Chet, Al Hirt, Freddie, Dizzy, Wynton, Grover, and so on and on.

This is one of the jazz albums you must-have in your collection if you love jazz.

Lemme say this was my introduction to Sonny and mostly this was an all-time standard and mostly a must-have just b/c I seen the movie w/ my man Michael Caine in it I was impressed. True to say Sonny will stand along my favorite 'cuz he's has a more unique sound see what I mean? I believe everybody should cop this just b/c they were familar to "Saxophone Colossus" (Sonny's most high-standard masterpiece incls. the hit "St. Thomas").

      5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2001-06-25

This is one of the great jazz albums period, in my opinion. This is because of Sonny Rollins' playing. The music is not the same as what you hear in the movie, so there may be more unreleased stuff from this session in the vaults. It would be great if they released all of it, along with other Sonny Rollins stuff from the mid sixties.

I just wanted to be the first one to review this CD! This is one of DivCo's best singles. Sure, technically only one of the tracks is exclusive (Untitled Melody), and it isn't a Neil Hannon original, but it's excellent, and the other B-sides are different enough from the original album versions to make this worth your while. Heck, I think Your Daddy's Car sounds better on this single than on Liberation!

      5 out of 5 stars a great albumn.......2001-08-06

Really good albumn, if I was to make music this is how I would want it to sound, its all sweet, not a bad moment. A mixture of all that is good in music, this albumn will charm you and win your heart and live in your cd player whilst your other cds grow envious of this cd.

4 out of 5 stars This WILL Infiltrate Your Brain.......2001-05-15

The first time I saw Alfie I was at another band's show. They were nothing like anything I've seen before! But after they'd finished I still wasn't sure. By the third time I 'bumped' into them going to see other bands I realised just how good these guys are. I found myself not only recognising every song but LOVING every song.

They are best described as Folk-Rock and are well suited to the stools they occupy live. This swagger and faux-unproffesionalism comes across as on this recording to produce a relaxing, beautiful marriage of vocals, lyrics and most certainly the music. They are diverse and skilled musicians who can easily crowd a stage with vocals, guitars, bass, cello(?), drums, flute and trumpet.

If you want comparisons they're hard to classify, but I suppose they sound like Turin Brakes without the vocal harmonies. Just buy it and listen - especially to 'All About the Weather' and 'Make No Bones'.

      5 out of 5 stars perfect compilation!.......2000-04-11

Truly, one of the best things Blue Note has done in years has been the "blue" series of compilations released with all different moods and themes. Whether its "Blue Bacharach" "Afro Blue" or in this case "Blue Breakbeats", this series has made for some of the best listening around in jazz. Blue Breakbeats vol 4 is my favorite of them all. I can't find one low point on the disc. The whole record flows imaginatively from song to song, building in energy and creativity, finally ending on a song ("this is soul") summing up not just the disc, but the whole series as well. I definitely have to say that the standout tracks are "Woman of the Ghetto" by Marlena Shaw, whose lyrics are so profound and are delivered with infinite emotion; "Bring Down The Birds" is a track by Herbie Hancock that funks like no other. (Did you really think Deee-Lite could come up with that bassline?) My favorite track is one that brings back a lot of memories...Three is the Magic Number. It grooves, is forever inspiring, and has found its rightful place in postmodern's history, being sampled on one of the timeless hip-hop masterpieces of the late 80's/early 90's : De La Soul's "3 feet High and Rising". Overall, this collection is as funky as they get, and we should all bow our heads and pay homage to the funk gods, for it is they who give our life a little groove.

3 out of 5 stars stevie's instrumental sounds from 1968..........2004-11-27

in 1963 little stevie wonder recorded his first instrumental
album entitled "the jazz soul of little stevie"/five years later
in 1968,stevie records his second all instrumental album under
a mysterious pseudonym his alter ego:"eivets rednow" which is
stevie wonder spelled backwards.in fact,on the upper right hand
corner of the original album cover-it gives away the hidden identity of the artist with the ?uestion:'how do you spell stevie wonder backwards?'there is no photograph of the talented
musician on the album cover, which is replaced with a photograph
of musical instruments that are blended into each other thru
transparency.the music itself is just that-musical instrumentals with no vocals.this album is 50/50:50% of it has covers and 50% of it has originals. the covers are hal david&burt bacharach's
'alfie'and 'a house is not a home'/d. addrisi's 'never my love'/m. parish&h.roemheld's 'ruby'/philemon hou's 'grazing in the grass'/the originals are:'more than a dream'/'how can you believe'/'ask the lonely'/'which way the wind'/'bye bye world'/this all instrumental album has nice orchestrations combined with wonder's classic harmonica playing, his use of the clavinet.this is nice mood music 2 chill out 2 or 2 have dinner with that special someone in your life.the standout cuts are:'how can you believe'/and the combined medley of 'never my
love'and 'ask the lonely'/the long and beautiful 'ruby' of which stevie leads with harmonica.the piece has relaxed strings and a few laid back horn parts.the slightly upbeat 'which way the world'is clavinet driven.this piece has plenty of horns.'bye bye world'is also clavinet controlled as well but it is more upfront in the song and it also has a good horn section.this album along with his more commercial "for once in my life album" are the first two albums that wonder makes use of the clavinet which adds more jazz, funk, and soul to his music making.stevie wonder's "eivets rednow" was not recorded 4 commercial purposes.it was recorded 4 the enjoyment 4 the artist himself and his fascination 4 the art's sake of music itself...

      3 out of 5 stars Okay,I Know!.......2004-07-23

I can explain this entire album in a heartbeat-this is
recorded under Stevie Wonder's name spelled backwards and
consists of a series of instrumentals featuring Wonder's superb
      harmonica playing over easy-listening 1960's lounge/bachelor pad
music! So an A+ grade for Stevie and a big HA!HA!HA!HA! for the music. If only Stevie couldv'e known what the future of lounge
would be-his career might've taken a very different path.Thank goodness it didn't go THIS way!

3 out of 5 stars GREAT HARMONICA PLAYING.......2002-06-18

The problem with music is the background, it is
      dated and a bit overpowering.

4 out of 5 stars For harmonicists and fans of easy listening.......2001-12-29

For the casual listener, this CD is filled with some very relaxing music. The srot of thing you'd play at the end of a hard day's work or at a candlelight dinner at home with a loved one. For aspiring harmonicists, one listen to this will let you know that you still need to practice! Enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars the best kept secret that i know of.......2001-07-11

my friend turned me on to this over 20 years ago. rumor has it that stevie wanted to do a harp album, and RCA said no way. he did it anyway, and it's the bomb. just had to change his name to Eivets Rednow. Enjoy the best talent with an entire orchestra behind him. Michael B.
