Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Blast from the past!.......2006-11-10

I was very impressed by both the sound quality and the music. I knew a couple of Zombies songs from a while back, but the sound from LP's and tapes was never good. The sound on this SACD remix is vastly superior. It's not perfect, with still a little hiss, but there is much less distortion than the original mix. Also most of the recordings were apparently done with excellent recorders (for the time) because the high-end frequencies are all there! The sound is nearly transparent, like you're actually there in the studio. Back to the music itself, I discovered several great songs that I didn't expect to find. It's quite a blast from the past, and well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Zombies at their best!.......2006-09-23

For several years, I had a CD of Zombies greatest hits and was content to enjoy listening to some great old songs from a very talented group. But someone recently gave me this new CD and I can hardly believe the difference! The quality of each track is amazing, revealing subleties not even hinted at in my old CD or, of course, in the original vinyl recording. The CD has all of the Zombie hits and the best of the rest. It avoids the later acid recordings that never caught on with fans on either side of the Atlantic.

3 out of 5 stars Strangely disappointing.......2006-09-13

This, along with "Reggae in High-Fi" was my first purchase of an Audio Fidelity disc. I was very much looking forward to hearing the Zombies (without question one of the greatest Sixties bands) in the SACD format. I have the fantastic 4-disc "Zombie Heaven" box set (Big Beat Records, UK import) which, though it's Redbook and uses the original mono mixes for most of the material, sounds really, really good, and I thought, "well now, the Zombies in stereo, and in Super Audio! It'll be fantastic, even though I've already got all the songs."

Well, unfortunately I confess to some disappointment. The first thing I thought when opening up the package was how cheesy the artwork was. I mean, SUPER AUDIO CD in big alyoominium-type shiny caps across the top, a fuzzy out-of-focus band photo, and some swirly stuff in the background. It looks like the artwork for a Spinal Tap bootleg. Let's put it on and see how it sounds, that's what matters, I thought, so I did. While it is nice to hear these songs in stereo, the mixes seem a bit off (the drums sound muffled to my ears, and the guitars a little tinny) compared to a couple of other Zombies discs I've got (OK, besides the ZH box I've got "The Zombies Collection" from Castle which is in stereo) and the vocals seem to suffer from some sort of compression, EQ, I don't know what. But they're rather flat (as in lifeless) sounding somehow compared to the ZH box. In fact after another couple of listens there's not much doubt in my mind that the ZH box set is much superior to this Audio Fidelity release, sound-wise. Which is somewhat surprising, given that ZH is "only" Redbook audio. (For that matter, it's vastly superior packaging-wise as well.)

Just goes to show that just because it's SACD doesn't mean it's going to blow your mind with it's sonic quality. And all the raves I've read about the genius of audiophile remastering engineer Steve Hoffman now seem somewhat suspect. So I guess the cheese-flavoured amateur-style artwork suits the product within perfectly, after all. Put the cash you were thinking of spending on Audio Fidelity's "Greatest Hits" toward a copy of the Big Beat "Zombie Heaven" box instead (if you can find it). Sorry Steve.

4 out of 5 stars The Zombies Still Make It Happen.......2005-09-06

I ordered this CD a few days after I saw them Live in Manchester N.H. Aug. 4th 2005. With the lead singer and keyboards being such a huge part of the Zombies sound, we were just amazed to see and hear them perform with Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone leading the band. After having such a great time at the concert, I just had to buy the CD. The CD is all of what you'd want to hear and much more. If you miss hearing the songs on the radio from The Zombies that you grew up with, this CD is the one to have. Well done, a 10, and top of the list of CD's that "take you back in time".

5 out of 5 stars Everything you want from the Zombies.......2005-06-22

The Zombies had many hits and most are on here. If you like British invasion music, this CD is for you. "Time of the Season" is a great love song and "Tell Her No" and "She's Not There" are great as well. A good collection of his from a good band.

The original Zombies only made two albums (including their acknowledged masterpiece and farewell wave, Odessey and Oracle, the source of the song for which they're best known in the U.S., "Time of the Season"), but they were basically a singles band. The grimmer and more ornate underside of the British Invasion, they specialized in depressive, non-rocking three-minute symphonies, driven by Rod Argent's funereal organ and Colin Blunstone's haunted-aesthete vocals. Greatest Hits includes some actual hits ("Time of the Season" as well as "She's Not There" and "Tell Her No"), alongside a bunch of non-hits whose chief crime was being too far ahead of their time, although some of the arrangements can get a bit fussy. --Douglas Wolk

Album Description

Reproduced from the original British master tapes. All of the hits from 'She's Not There' and 'Tell Her No' all the way up to 'Time Of The Season'. 1990 release. Standard jewel case.

4 out of 5 stars The Zombies - 'The Greatest Hits' (DCC) 4 1/2 stars.......2005-12-09

Most definitely, one of the MOST under-appreciated and under-rated bands of all time.I mean if you consider yourself to be a true fan of '60's British Invasion rock&roll and you don't like The Zombies(I've come across a few),you seriously need professional help.A very nicely assembled fifteen track disc that seems to go by very fast whenever played(at least)in my stereo.Tunes that make this CD more than a keeper are "She's Not There","Tell Her No","It's All Right With Me","I Love You" and the unforgetable 1969 gem "Time Of The Season".Actually got to see vocalist Colin Blunstone and keyboardist Rod Argent on a recent summer tour. They did plenty of Zombies material, and some Argent tunes as well.Recommended.

3 out of 5 stars The Zombies Greatest Hits.......2004-04-28

This is a good greatest hit compilation. I do agree that it would be nice if it were remastered, but when this disc came out remastering tools were not at their best. Still however you get all the zombies hit singles and some other nice tunes all on one disc. Good introduction to have for the zombies with some pretty good notes inside CD Booklet. If you want to expand on this disc however, you could pick up the latest anthology set.

My top 5:
Tell her no
Time of the season
She's not there
You make me feel so good
Don't cry for me

4 out of 5 stars Zombies: A+, Sound Quality: B-.......2001-10-24

15 remastered originals recorded for Decca between 1964-67, including the single version of "She's Not There" (their first release). Subsequent US hits "Tell Her No" and "Time of the Season" are also included. If the other tracks didn't exactly set the charts on fire, there's no filler here and pretty much every one's a winner. For those entranced with the catchy, yet melancholic British Invasion sounds of the Hollies and the Pretty Things in the mid-'60s or Badfinger in the late-'60s/early-'70s, at least one Zombies release is a must. Purists might recommend Odessey and Oracle, their justly-celebrated swan song, but it features only one hit, "Time of the Season." Greatest Hits, however, isn't as easy to find as some Zombies comps, notably The Singles A's & B's and Absolutely the Best, which boast superior sound quality, but lack "Don't Cry for Me" (which sounds like the blueprint for Redd Kross' entire career), "I Can't Make Up My Mind," "The Kind of Girl," "It's All Right With Me," and "I Don't Want to Know." The artwork is from the original 1964 Parrot album cover.

2 out of 5 stars Badly needs digital remastering.......2000-03-10

The Zombies had three great hits in three years: "She's Not There", "You Make Me Feel So Good" and "Time of the Season". I don't know where the rest of this music came from -- I have heard a few of the songs a few times, but most were certainly not "hits" by any definition of the word.

The recording quality is very poor -- it sounds worse than my old LPs. I strongly suggest another compilation if you are a big Zombies fan. This one is not worth the few dollars it costs.

4 out of 5 stars fair compilation.......2000-02-12

This is a mixed emotion album. Five songs off this hits package was never really released until this album came out. The sound quality sounds low so you will have to turn up the volume to get the full effect. The Zombies are a great band. They were in the industry for three years, and had three top ten hits. Two of those three went to #1. I would recommend you get, Odeesy & Oracle and Singles A & B's to get the full effect of The Zombies magical music!
