Jolie Holland's first album recorded in an actual studio is a sumptuous affair that extends her indie country and folk sound further into the realms of old-school jazz and country blues. But this is no quaint revivalism; ye olde sounds are made modern by smart lyrics that reference feminist writer/adventurer Isabelle Eberhardt on the whimsical "Old Fashion Morphine," or that speak of "a couple of food stamps and a caffeine buzz" on "Poor Girl." The arrangements are subtle and sophisticated, showing more breadth than those on her debut, Catalpa, with fewer instruments in the way of her superlative voice. Her singing has such soul and energy that she's as often compared to Chan Marshall and Karen Dalton as she is to Billie Holiday. Her update of the old Irish folk song "Tom of Bedlam" is brilliant, just vocals with roiling jazz drums behind it. It's difficult to think of a more compelling sophomore record by a young singer-songwriter, Norah included. --Mike McGonigal

4 out of 5 stars Great cabo verdean musician with a style of her own.......2007-01-11

I'm a native Cabo Verdean and truly enjoyed this CD. Lura has a style of her own. It's great for listening or dancing. If you are a "true" Cabo Verdean, you will definately do more than tap your feet. I highly recommed this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Lura viva Africa.......2006-08-01

This is an absolute must have. I had never been exposed to West African music but this CD got me hooked. I am from Southern Africa and thats all I knew music wise but I must say, African musicians are under rated, they have a lot to offer but the world hasn't taken notice yet. Lura does justice to the beauty of African music on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Lura Lures Listeners .......2006-07-31

This is enchanting music from beginning to end. Although I had read about Lura for awhile, I only recently purchased this cd. I was immediately drawn to the beauty of this music; although it is labeled as Cape Verdean, it embraces a variety of rhythms and genres. Lura's energetic voice and her interpretive style at times, remind me of a blend of Margareth Menezes and Yusa. Lura has her own unique and powerful presence which is accompanied by outstanding musicians. The guitar work is particularly impressive, while the violin and accordian keep the music fresh, interesting, and mesmerizing. Five tracks on this cd were written by the late Orlando Pantera, and I am grateful to be exposed to his work through Lura's music. Although every Pantera song is incredible, I tend to favor the more rhythmic songs, "Batuku," "Vazulina," and "Raboita di Rubon Manel," Lura's vocals are extroadinary on these tracks. Lura should also be recognized for her songwriting, especially on "Oh Naia". To take the next step of the Lura experience, listeners must check out the dvd included in this cd package. The Lura concert on this dvd not only gives listeners a visual understanding of Lura's talent; her highly dynamic and expressive performance radiates with soul and passion...luring audiences at any venue, in any language,

5 out of 5 stars Curiosity is an amazing propeller in this world we live in..........2006-04-03

I was more than skeptical for reasons I'll never know, to actually purchase this cd. I heard a few clips, and just couldn't get into it. I thought, "this is just another afro-latin/tropicalismo cd. I have a few of these, why bother?" By the time I heard the clip for #7, I reluctantly handed over the credit card, because I have been known to buy albums just for one song. #7 stood out at once, and I could feel myself relax. Okay, I'll buy it just for this song.

I never dissappoint myself, neither do the artists I place a mustard seed of faith in.

This incredibly dynamic and strangely spiritual album is one of the best I have ever bought. Her voice is so authentic, but like rich, dark chocolate that can only be savored. And its all worth the time. This album is pleasure at its best. Perfect for bright warm days at the beach or a cookout, yet romantic and sensual for a dinner for two...or a dinner party for eight. Its wonderful to put the children to sleep, and upbeat to dance until the sun returns.

I listen with awe, fascination, inspiration, honor...she is a professional if I ever heard one. This is one album you will never regret purchasing. It has the right measurements of spice, jazz, island, afro, asiatic and tropical influences that make a complete music experience a reality.

If you are a fan of world music, or good music in general, once you get this album, you'll wished you had heard about it sooner.

5 out of 5 stars During breakfast.......2007-04-26

A roommate of mine would play this CD on Saturday mornings while she was cooking breakfast and after hearing it a couple times from my room I would come out and sit just to listen. Somehow the music fit the mood of late morning mixed with the aroma of eggs and such. Now I have it for myself and Jolie Holland's sad, satirical, yet energetic music is a memory into that time. Thanks Marit.

5 out of 5 stars A voice from another time / place / world?.......2006-07-12

I can't stop listening to that voice of hers - it is like a cross between Victoria Williams, Billie Holiday, and Ben Webster. It is more like a saxophone than a voice, a saxophone coming from some Sunday afternoon show at a smoky little club down the street, that makes you say, "Hey, who is that?" You can't miss the soulfulness of her sound.

I think she has the potential to be one of the great American musicians if she keeps producing stuff like this. Mellow, bluesy folk-rock with her own unique twists. Odd but intriguing lyrics, songs that draw you in and make you think, then pop up in your head days later. I just saw her live, and she started out slow and easy, not very exciting, but as the show went on, the crowd got more and more into it, and by the end of it, she had totally won us over.

On the downside, her playing does not seem to interact incredibly well with her band's, and she is not a virtuoso guitarist or pianist, but so what? Her music is unique and wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe she's a poor girl but it doesn't bother me at all.......2006-06-18

I love this album but I can see from some reviews that some people hate her. I'm not sure what is pretentious about her delivery. I think Jolie is amazing. I've never heard anyone like her. She sings like a trumpet player from some dark holler. She blurs time in a way that would make the old pre-war blues masters proud. I love her timing. Does she have a unique vocal style? Yes she does but then again so did Tommy Johnson and Skip James but I don't hear anyone calling those guys frauds. Thank goodness.

I'm reviewing this because I unfortunately don't have her new album yet, Springtime Can Kill You, so I've been listening to this one almost daily just to alleviate my anxiety over Springtime.

Jolie seems to me to be a gift from another era, though she's in no way derivative of anyone else I've ever heard. I feel like she is an artist who, if she had been discovered on a bunch of crackling old Paramount sides in someone's attic, she'd have been considered the find of the decade. Having said that, she is also very much an artist of our own times.

For me, there is something very real about her songs, style and music. It all seems so small and personal. I never think of her in terms of this big artist who plays concerts in various countries. I think of her more in terms of... if this were a woman I knew or was friends with and she was sitting on a couch 8 feet away from me and she began to do her thing, I'd be blown away. She's a singular voice and vision that seems to somehow meld old-timey music with Tidal-era Fiona Apple. Even that description fails miserably. I never truly feel as if she has melded anything. I just feel like she picks up an instrument, opens her mouth, and this is what happens. It's truly her own.

"I used to be an angel, now I'm just like everybody else" makes me wonder if she is an Ani Difranco fan. Certainly that sentiment is similar to that in Ani's Superhero, and expressed in much the same manner in this line.

Goodbye California is the only song I dislike, and I hate that one. I love everything else but I can't stand that song.

I'd love for Erykah Badu to hear Jolie. I fear over time Erykah may become a victim of the fickle nature which is at the core of many of the modern R&B fans who are always looking for the next hit tune, only to forget a few years later. Erykah's music is bigger than the whole of the genre to which she's been pigeonholed. Both Jolie and Erykah receive lots of comparisons to Billie Holiday and I feel it's generally unwarranted in both cases. I think it's a journalistic convenience which really doesn't have much basis in the music of any of these 3 great artists. I think hearing Jolie may inspire Erykah to tap into her inner Victoria Spivey which would then expose her to a whole new audience, and one that has a longer attention span.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-05-15

I'm a big fan of Lucinda Williams and Cowboy Junkies, so my friends thought I would dig Jodie. Wrong. I found her lyrics boring and her delivery annoyingly pretentious. Not to my taste at all.

2 out of 5 stars Indie Girl Imitates Billie Holiday Imitating a Hillbilly.......2006-02-17

I'm not sure what the young lady is trying to accomplish here...potentially compelling folk-blues material collapses under the weight of annoying , exaggerated Appalachian vocal affectations ("Give me that ol'-fashion mor-phyne...it's good enough for mae"). Guess I should have taken heed from her similarly afflicted turns on the Be Good Tanyas' Blue Horse ("Riiine and snow..."). As a counterpoint I contrast her with Gillian Welch, who manages to stay on the good side of the line separating authenticity from irony. It's a shame, thinking about what might have been if she would drop the pretensions and just...sing.

From Argentina, Buenos Aires, where the heart and soul of tango is epitomized and a captivating aural experience lives in the spirit of the music. Named after the cosmopolitan cultural and musical hotspot in Buenos Aires, this sultry album is a collection of unique and addictive musical offerings combining traditional tango sounds and Latin rhythms with fresh electronic beats. An exotic collection of loungy tunes, "Palermo Nuevo" is modern yet sexy and will appeal to a sophisticated lifestyle-oriented consumer.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Another wannabe "tango nuevo" album.......2007-05-05

The product description says it all: "[the album will] appeal to a sophisticated lifestyle-oriented consumer". But will it appeal to a tango lover? Hmmm.

Unfortunately the better tracks here are the least adventurous, which should tell you something. "Libertango" is completely in the style of the Gotan Project's first album (which is no bad thing). But from here on its mostly downhill. "Vuelvo al sur" is given a very simple repetitive drum-bass treatment with no variation of beat.

What drew me to this album was seeing that track 3, "Homage to Chet Baker", was based on the wonderful tune "Alone Together". Unfortunately it's just a mess - the wonderful melody has no chance. Listen to Jo Stafford to hear this tune done properly.

Track 5, "The Gaucho's Pain" is indeed that, a painful reworking of Piazzolla's "Oblivion"

In summary: a commercial attempt to cash in on the tango nuevo mini-boom, with little of originality - sorry

4 out of 5 stars Sexy Rich Mixes.......2007-04-27

I bought this CD just for Libertango and found myself with quite a few nice surprises. The touch-up of almost lounge-like effect gives the music a layer of fullness than the traditional tango. Unlike the many comtemporary tango mixes that lack a distinct tune, the pieces in this album excel by revolving around a few memorable passionate main themes. The vocal parts are sexy and sad. Recommended songs #1,2,4,6,8.

Turkey has recently emerged as a world-renowned musical hot-bed. Ancient styles from the region are robust and varied but new sounds from the clubs of Istanbul are considered especially seductive. Mercan Dede, who now resides in Montreal, is a cutting-edge Sufi Dervish, a Turkish-born composer, DJ and producer with spiked hair and several identities. The album's title translates to "water" and it consists of meditations inspired by the Bosphorous Straits. Realized by give-and-take between traditional strings, brass, woodwinds and percussion along with airy, droning electronica, the music flows in ripples, evoking tidal ebbs, surges and cresting, hissing waves, redolent of hot, entranced noondays and cricket-serenaded moon-rises. Indian chanteuse Susheela Raman, Trans-Global Underground sitarist Sheema Mukherjee, Tunisian singer Dhafer Youssef, electric violinist Hugh Marsh, and Turkish rapper Ceza merge and separate, but this is business-as-usual in a place that has stood at the crossroads of Europe and Asia since time out of mind. --Christina Roden

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Su evokes dreamy images.......2007-05-19

I enjoy listening to this CD during short periods (30 minutes) of time while driving long distances. It evokes imagery of places I have never been to, and that is interesting to me. It creates dreamy but sullen images which is why I can only enjoy it in short spurts. I prefer the instrumental pieces more than those where voices enter in. They seem to get in the way of the music sometimes because the voices are in a higher in pitch than I enjoy.
It is a terrific CD to have as background music at an opening where the art and music can mingle peacefully.

5 out of 5 stars Waters of Passion, Ecstasy and Calm.......2007-01-07

Part of a planned series focusing on the elements, this CD was inspired by Mercan Dede's meditations on the shores of the Bosphorus and it shows. 'Su' is the Turkish word for water, and indeed every song on this CD is named for a different kind of water. Sometimes it's the water of ecstasy, as on 'Ab-i Tarab' which is accompanied by the clarinet, while others times it's more seren, as on 'Ab-i Verd' and 'Ab-i Zen'. 'Ab-i Hayat' is uplifting and lively, while 'Ab-i Beste' is mysterious and haunting. The twelve tracks on this CD showcase a wide range of moods and feelings, but all show a marvelous blend of modern electronica with Turkish instrumentation, percussion and sensibilities. This makes the CD both exotic and enticing to western listeners, even those who aren't familiar with Middle Eastern music. A couple songs drift even further east, showing Indian influences. 'Ab-i La'l' features the Indian sitar, while Tamil singer Susheela Raman lends her voice to 'Ab-i Beka'. In my opinion, this CD represents Mercan Dede's most powerful work to date, and I enjoyed it greatly. When I have more money, I intend to buy more of his CDs, but until then, this is a great example of the new generation of Middle Eastern musicians. I strongly recommend this CD to anyone interested in Turkish electronica, and fans of music in general, since you don't have to speak Turkish to appreciate the beauty of this music.

4 out of 5 stars World Music.......2006-07-10

I have purchased "Mercan Dede"s music before. I have found that with this album his music is becoming more of a world music. For example, the track #2 (I don't have the names with me) has a nice Mediterranean main tune while the song's dominant instrument is I believe Indian sitar. In addition to track #2, my other favorite tracks are #6 and #8.

5 out of 5 stars Digital age Sufi.......2005-09-19

An astonishing work of intricate delicacy and daring creativity. Mercan Dede makes a quantum leap in his maturity as an artist. The different instruments, oriental and classical, western electronic and rap singing are not merely mixed. Way beyond those artificial divisions, they are used indistinctly by the artist to gradually build the climax of this Sufi ritual, and to express with the tools of today the ancient tradition of approaching Divinity through the purest artistic beauty. All notions of east and west, past and future, are transcended and disappear into the constant swirls of the waters (Su) of the Bosphorus - whirling like Dervishes.
Listen, surrender, dissolve and elevate.

3 out of 5 stars This Greek Goddess Should Stick With The Traditional Songs.......2006-02-09

Well there's a little bit of everything on this 2 CD set. Dance - Techno Pop - Romantic Ballad - Contemporary and Traditional. Some of it is excellent, some not so good. Despina is incredible on the traditional and romantic material, however when she speeds up the tempo for the dance and techno tracks her voice suffers considerably.

If you are going to buy just one Despina CD for your collection I'd look for a copy of her now OOP '10 Entoles.'

5 out of 5 stars Where has Despina been all my life?.......2005-11-01

Until Friday afternoon I'd never heard of Despina Vandi. I noticed her cd when I was searching for the new T.A.T.U. cd. What caught my eyes was the sticker on the front of the cd that said something like: Greece's #1 popstar.
I love buying cds from people that I've never heard of and don't sing in english. I get this weird rush when I push play and listen to someone new for the first time.
Despina Vandi did not dissapoint. It was like a breath of fresh air listening to Gia. I don't speak whatever language she sings in and so I have no idea what she is singing about, but it doesn't matter. The songs are so 'catchy' that I don't need to.

If you're looking for something new, take a chance on Despina!

1 out of 5 stars She's meant to have an international career, u know..........2005-04-19

" Gia " , one of the best-selling albums in Greece for the last decade , is a rather shallow proposition . Intesively promoted by Greece's largest record company , the record displays an obvious lack of any kind of personallity in Vandi 's music .

All tracks here are written and composed by one man , high-profiled Foibos who has been supplying easy listening pop tracks to two dozen other young greek artists. That fact alone displays an essential problem of the greek music scene : how can one songwritter maintain a creative relationship with so many perfomers all at once . The answer is he can't and the listener can sense that while listening to the various offerings of Mazonakis , Lebesis , Kokkinou , Tsalikis and others . His ideas feel recycled , his copying of foreighn hit singles is embarrasing , his lyrics never concern something more than boyfriend troubles .

Vandi herself doesn't help the situation improve . She keeps chasing after high notes , often shouting instead of singing . Her style and singing technique are way too similar to Anna Vissi's ones - it makes you wonder if there's any kind of artistic ambition in her at all .

Gia's strength is suppose to be it's dance-tracks . The tittle track sounds a bit exotic and at least not as irritating as other past hits of hers like ¨ Ipofero ¨ while ¨Anavis Foties ¨ screams 'copy of some syrian or lebanese or (anyway )arab number one song of tha last few years' . The slow compositions also fail with ¨Thimisou¨ pretentious drama being a characteristic example .

¨Gia¨ is not the first nor the last bad pop album to be released and Vandi is not the worst singer in the country yet one thing is for sure : she is the most artificial one . How can a woman with so unspectacular talents be one of the Greece's most famous ones is a question still looking for an answer .

god bless despina vandi and her vocals. if you love world music, this is your singer right here. released singles were "GIA" and "OPA OPA" but few more songs were also worthy of being released world wide but didn't happen. really the cd is more than a dance album like perhaps many expected of this album:an all dance album..It's a good mixture of dance hits along with ballads and good pop and a more traditional sound...its a double cd filled with great Greek music...and i have favorites which perhaps are the favs. of many others:

5 out of 5 stars El Sargento manda.......2005-09-07

Once again the Sargento does it... he's an outlaw. Former member of mythic Ludwig Von 88, he changed direction into a finder of rythms from all over the world (see the list of invited musicians to his sessions). Well done... and let's dance.

5 out of 5 stars "Salsamuffin" makes great raod music........2004-05-21

I'm not really too much of a salsa or reggae fan. I bought this album after hearing a story about "salsamuffin" and Mr. Garcia on NPR. I thought his story was interesting and the snippets of music that were presented were quite appealing. The whole concept of "salsamuffin" as presented by Mr. Garcia was intriguing.

I'm hooked. This is a pleasant and energetic hybrid of Caribbean, African, reggae and salsa music that is infectious. The songs all have high energy, a nice emotive quality and a high level of musicianship. The production values are better than I expected, given that Mr. Garcia is based out of Havana and one presumes that he's not using state-of-the art equipment on the recording side.

This album has retained a more-or-less permanent place in my car CD player. It's a great road album!

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Legendary.......2004-04-08

I can't say enough about this album.

I thought Manu Chao was at the apex of this wonderful new musical fusion that is coming out of Spain, but this takes the cake.

This album is a great example of an artist who could be raking in major bucks with potenial hit after hit but since he won't comprimise his political beliefs, you won't hear him on the radio anytime soon. How sad.

Booming riddim after booming riddim, catchy all the way through. You will be addicted to the great combo of salsa and dancehall, ragga. The instrumentation is impeccable.

cheers to El Sargento

peace

Can't wait for Manu Chao's new offering. I hear he is recording with a couple of artists from Mali. Should be great. Manu doing African pop, can't wait to spin that at the parties.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite album of 2003.......2004-03-12

I bought this album in Paris last October and it's barely been out of my boom box since then. Following in the footsteps of Manu Chao, Garcia has taken himself to unforeseen heights here. Like Chao, Bruno "Sergent" Garcia is French-born of Spanish parents, and he's staked out a piece of territory halfway between Jamaica and Cuba, with major influences from Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. There are no Latin cuts here that aren't at least a little reggae, and no reggae cuts that aren't at least a little Latin. The fusion is seamless, the energy high, the melodies irresistible, the musicianship impeccable, and the guest stars impressive. Parts of the album were recorded in Cuba and Jamaica--ex-Wailers keyboardist Tyrone Downie fully brings the Wailers sound to "Mi Ultima Voluntad" and "Poetas," and the Cubans shine especially brightly on "El Regreso."

5 out of 5 stars Salsa with French Dressing.......2004-03-10

The Shakti label from Narada Music is one of my favorites for introducing me to new World artists. Now they've introduced "Sergent Garcia" (yeah, that Sergent Garcia! The one named after the guy in the red sash, nemesis of Zorro, who inspired Schultz on "Hogan's Heroes"!)

This Sergent Garcia is no bumbler. The music is called "salsamuffin" and described as " Jamaican, Cuban, and African music [blended] into salsified hip-hop." I think it also has more than just a touch of Reggae in the spicy blend. And some of the cuts on the CD are sung in gutteral, Colonial French. French Salsa? It's funny and happy and well, this is a great party CD. It's rather hard to describe, so listen to samples and see what you think. I adored it.

4 out of 5 stars Intro to Bhangra.......2006-07-11

This is a great collection of Bhangra for anyone just getting started. It offers many well-known Bhangra artists and a taste of the "dinka dinka dinka" sound that is Bhangra's trademark. The standout tracks are from MIDIval PunditZ, Swami, Achanak, and Panjabi MC.

If you're looking for good Bhangra, check out Desi Nation. Together, both albums can easily support an impromptu dance party, heavy on the dhols.

3 out of 5 stars Great in small doses.......2005-08-20

This is a fun Bhangra mix, but for those new to Bhangra, or those very familiar with it, I would opt for a straight Panjabi MC CD-I find I play those more often than Bar Bhangra. It's as if the producers were trying to get the quintessential Bhangra sound, and the result is that the songs begin to sound boringly similar midway through the album.

At the same time, as part of a larger mix (think iPod), this CD is a great addition!

Happy, bright, sparkling, brilliant: in all honesty, there simply aren't enough colorful adjectives to accurately describe the palpable, inherent joy in the music of Cuban master Ibrahim Ferrer. All the shades of the rainbow--and more--are showcased beautifully on Ay, Candela, a vivid, varried collection of classic tracks. The assembled songs span the 1960s, '70s, and early '80s, but they sound as fresh and vibrant as anything recorded in the last few years. Ferrer is a master of delivery, and he works wonderfully alongside the expert musicians and background vocalists. It makes for some great moments, particularly during the joyous "Mi Tonada Montuna," "Manana Me Voy Pa' Sibanicu" and the title track. Ferrer's best moment, however, comes during the stirring "Una Fuerza Immensa," a lush, captivating bolero that conjures images of swaying palm trees and slow-dancing couples. It's a standout amid an album of outstanding consistency. --Joey Guerra

4 out of 5 stars Great sample of ferrer's earlier work.......2005-09-09

If you're a fan of the great, recently departed Ibrahim Ferrer, you will find this album to be a interesting window into the work he did during the decades before he retired, before hooking up with the Buena Vista clan. If you're a more casual listener of Cuban music, I'd recommend sticking with Ferrer's more recent albums, as they are produced to better enhance the beauty of his voice.

It is important to note that the music on this cd was actually recorded from the 1960s to the 1980s, not in the Buena Vista era.

The Cuban music craze launched by the success of the Buena Vista Social Club has sailed into the global music community, but there seems to only be a few great records trickling into the U.S. market each year. The third effort from songwriter Pedro Luis Ferrer, Natural, is one of them. This timeless album of guaracha music features the earthy guitar and tres work of Ferrer as well as light percolating hand percussion. Ferrer's baritone voice rings out like the late Compay Segundo as he shares tales of everyday life in his country. He's also well matched to back-up singers Lena Ferrer and Lerlys Morales: they add a feminine counterpoint to the robust Ferrer, giving the album a real familial feel. Natural seemingly captures a night of sitting around the living room singing songs after a family dinner. Of course the skill and beauty of the music make it special, even if we can't be there in the room with them. -- Tad Hendrickson
