Neko Case's third solo effort is a moody, atmospheric affair that both satisfies and mystifies. Recorded in Tucson with a stellar band that includes Calexico's Joey Burns and John Convertino, Blacklisted charms you with its haunting, reverb-soaked songs, most of which were written by Case herself. The lyrics are impressionistic and, at times, inscrutable. "Fast train, where do your passengers wait?" she sings in the title song. "What's at the heart of your engine's rage?" While it's not always clear what Case is getting at, the overall mood of the album is one of loss and melancholy. I'm usually pretty level-headed about artists and don't lapse into starry-eyed fandom. However, for Neko Case I make an exception.

This, my favourite of her albums is virtually perfect - superb songs, superb playing (Neko always seems to get together a band who sound like they've been playing together forever) and sound, unshowy arrangement and production that get the most out of the songs. A record I listen to time and time again.

i'd have given it a 5 if my favourite song, outro with bees, wasn't so darn short! WHY OH WHY???

Neko Case's sultry, reverb laden vocals are the soundtrack to some wonderfully echo driven dreamworld. I am fairly new to Ms. Case's music, but this album certainly delights and draws the listener in.

I guess everyone has their favorite Neko Case album. All I can say is that I have gotten endless listening pleasure from Blacklisted, in which Neko draws from a wealth of sources to produce one of the most magical alt country CD's I've heard. Haunting yes, because she seems to evoke the spirit of Patsy Cline as if drawn from a deep dark well, echoing not only her voice but the depth of emotions as well. Even on a song as sentimental as Pretty Girls, Neko seems to find something extra. All the songs ring true, which is a pretty tall order these days.

Solid Album - but no Fox Confessor.......2007-02-12

After purchasing my favorite album this year, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, I needed to hear more Neko Case. I went back to her catalog of albums and decided on Blacklisted. It is an album full of wonderful songs and a few mediocre tunes as well. I couldn't expect a masterpiece like Fox Confessor, but this album is really quite nice to hear. Most notable is Lady Pilot in which Case's voice really offers the best vocal melody on the album. I also really love Neko's lyrics, especially on Deep Red Bells, I Wish I Was the Moon, and Pretty Girls, where she slices out a piece of life told from the perspective of the common person who has gone thru some significant experience. This album is enough to keep me buying more of her older albums and always looking out for more of her new releases.

This record is pure genious. I really could care less about any other songs besides "Street Fight." Any song which references walking down the street with a big mac and watching a fight boggles my mind. If you are from Queens circa '87 this song will bring a tear to your eye as it is a reminder of the glory days. Yo Dijan holla at ya boy!!!

Very solid.......2005-06-19

As mentioned, this is a combination of the two EPs Blacklisted had previously released.

The first half, off the Stillborn released EP, are the highlight. Blacklisted come out with some very quotable lines, some real heart, and some great guitar. These tracks are among the best released this year. 3800 is a highlight track, featuring a great pause in the middle.

The second half, originally the demo, aren't quite as good. You'll sometimes find yourself going back to the first half of the CD. It shows some great growth for the band, and I expect huge things on their first full length. As it stands, these songs are still good, just not as good.


What you get here is very hard guitar, some great vocals, and an excellent modern hardcore band. No throwback here, this band is 100% current, 100% Deathwish, Inc. Buy it. See them live. Scream out loud.

There is a bit of a thrashy metallic feel to some of the quicker riffs that sounds a lot like Ringworm. The vocals too, have a GUTG influence, but there is a certain strained quality to them that brings Refused to mind.

Anyway, We're Unstoppable is actually the re-release of two of Blacklisted's older EPs. Tracks 1-6 were taken from the now out of print Our Youth is Wasted EP originally released on Stillborn. Tracks 7-10 were actually a demo, but it got released as a 7" EP on Walk All Night Records.

The production is nice and crisp, however there is a bit of a drop off when the demo tracks come on, which can be expected as they were recorded in a basement.

Most straight forward hardcore really gets annoying after a while, but there is something about Blacklisted that makes them stand out. Again, I think it's the fact that their energy and anger really shine through in the music and you can tell they are passionate about what they are doing. Check it out if you like Refused, Give Up the Ghost, or Cast Aside.
