I've Waited So Long.......2007-07-18
"Singing All Day" for sure if you get the bonus tracks + remaster.......2007-06-28
Make sure you are looking at the version with the bonus tracks. If you don't see it here continue searching under Jethro Tull-Benefit. Amazon has plenty of copies for us!
April 1970 saw the third Jethro Tull release "Benefit" hit the record store shelves. The answer is no. Your memory is not going. "Teacher" was a track on the original American vinyl release.
Mixing the roots of folk with Martin Barre's guitar wizardry the end results is a recording that will be preserved in the time machine.
The signature tune is "To Cry You A Song" with a classic riff and Martin Barre's guitar in overdrive is one of the finest tunes ever penned. The intensity from the first note to the last made this a rock and roll radio staple for decades.
The entire journey is a feast. "With You There To Help Me" will stun you with the lyrics and the ability to switch on and off (as if it is a light switch) from the trademark folk to rock sound.
"For Michael Collins, Jeffrey And Me" never sounded better as it does on the remastered version. Ian Anderson's words resonate from the speakers with a new found clarity and brilliance.
"Play In Time" is a blowtorch. The passion is evident. If you overlooked this tune originally listen how the band hums as if it is a fine tuned machine.
If there are any doubts about the rating they are erased with the four bonus tracks. Two of them are tremendous. "Singing All Day" encompasses so much of what made early Tull special. The U.K. version of the brilliant "Teacher" ends the disc. Although you'll want to hear that one another few times.
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

Energetic Stuff.......2007-06-09
The band and production infuse the material with fine energy and nice instrumental flourishes. Lots of great stuff here but to me the best track of all is and has been "For Michael Collins, Jeffrey, and Me" - awesome.
Benefit Indeed!.......2007-06-04
For the Benefit of Jethro Tull.... (fans).......2007-04-23
This is a great album to own for true Jethro Tull fans, of which I've been one since my high school buddy (a jazz guitarist) introduced me to them, as a counterbalance to Hendrix and Beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd, Who, and Little Feat - to name but a few of the huge phenomena of the day. Only now I can see Tull as part of the Traffic and Moody Blues wave of truly melodic music, and as I read Ian Anderson's 2001 liner-note comment, it seems clear they wanted to keep their own voice while being immersed in the explosion of both British and American pop at the time.
All their albums offer some memorable songs, from quirky serenades to more classically inspired "rounds" and some truly wonderful acoustic guitar and flute interludes (not to mention their classic rockers and legendary "Aqualung"), there's much to choose from. Benefit has the benefit (sorry) of recording technology having caught up enough so that this recording is light-years better than the first two re-masters, perhaps having more tracks to balance or re-EQ or whatever. Listening to this beautiful remaster of Sossity, for anyone who has heard it hundreds of times or more, is a pleasure almost worth the price of admission alone. The bonus tracks are from a newer recording age as well, a sweet and playful sound with great fidelity.
This is a winner in terms of the content. It's slightly different than the original LP I still have (and A-B'd against) with extra songs worth hearing, some exceptionally beautiful in their acoustic sound and melody, and some very punchy and clean classic Tull rockers too. It's a winner in terms of making it worthwhile buying the CD rather than keeping an old cassette or LP (or in my case reel-to-reel)... it sounds like Tull and is worth a listen both for old fans and the curious.

Hurricane Katrina may have devastated New Orleans and surrounding Gulf communities in 2005, but it was also a forceful reminder of the Crescent City's world renowned status as the epicenter of much American musical heritage. This benefit album (all net proceeds will be donated to the local relief efforts of Habitat for Humanity, with a portion specifically set aside to provide housing for local musicians left homeless by the disaster) picks up that latter thread, a sometimes bittersweet reminder of how deepy ingrained, yet all-too-fragile, that cultural legacy really is. Allen Toussaint's succulent reworking of his "Yes We Can Can" sets a rhythmic, optimistic tone that parallels his city's own historical resilience, while Dr. John turns in a bluesy, laid-back "World I Never Made" that's a sharp contrast to the flashes of anger he showed on Tab Benoit's earlier benefit collection, Voice of the Wetlands. Irma Thomas gives a swampy, timely edge to Bessie Smith's "Back Water Blues" while others pay tribute to the region's history of gospel (Davell Crawford, Eddie Bo), indigenous cajun folk (Buckwheat Zydeco, Beausolei, Carol Fran) and legacy as the Birthplace of Jazz (vibrantly disparate contributions from Dr. Michael White, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the venerable Preservation Hall Jazz Band). The Wild Magnolias' medley "Brother John Is Gone/Herc-Jolly-John" is a joyous, African-rooted gumbo of musical possibilities, while Donald Harrison's sax work with The Wardell Querzergue's Orchestra's on "What a Wonderful World" is a fine preamble for Toussaint's elegiac solo piano rendition of "Tipitina and Me." Randy Newman's closer, a melancholic new version of Good Old Boys' "Louisiana 1927," is a tribute to his own N.O. roots whose refrain--"Louisiana, they're trying to wash us away"--is also a forceful, tragic reminder that history does indeed repeat. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
Nonesuch Records is releasing a benefit album of newly recorded songs featuring artists from the New Orleans music community - across a wide variety of styles - to document the depth, richness and profound musicality of that unique city. Funds from the sale of the record, titled Our New Orleans, will be donated to Habitat For Humanity to aid those affected by the recent Hurricane Katrina disaster. A number of New Orleans' best known musicians have been asked to record songs that are integral to their lives and that express their feelings about the city and the recent events there. Sessions began in New York on September 20, with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the Wild Magnolias recording at Clinton Studios. Later the same day and on September 21, Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band recorded at New York's Avatar Studios. Further sessions in October included Dr. John, Buckwheat Zydeco, and Randy Newman, among others. Nonesuch's parent company - Warner Bros. Records - is donating all of the production costs for this record, as part of the Warner Music Group's larger efforts on behalf of the hurricane victims. Many others involved in the project are also generously donating their time and services.Customer Reviews:

This is a wonderful compilation of artists from the area, and even more than a year after Katrina - it's worth buying and supporting the Habitat and musicias who lost their homes.

George Winston is no stranger to benefits. He often gives the proceeds from his concerts to charitable organizations, and in 2001 he released Remembrance, a benefit album for the families of 9/11 victims. Gulf Coast Blues & Impressions: A Hurricane Relief Benefit serves two purposes. It's a benefit for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, but it also allows Winston to indulge his love of New Orleans piano, which he's voraciously studied from the works of James Booker, Professor Longhair, Henry Butler, and Dr. John. Winston's proficiency at these styles is not always convincing. There's uncertainty in his timing, and he seems to get finger-tied on difficult runs. But he doesn't make it easy on himself, playing stomping stride pieces by James Booker ("Pixie") and Henry Butler ("The Breaks"). These are rapid-fire tunes on which Winston gets a honky-tonk sound from the piano that might surprise his fans.On a 12-minute odyssey through "When the Saints Go Marching In," Winston echoes Bobby Hebb's 1966 hit, "Sunny," before breaking into a rollicking stride version of the New Orleans anthem that takes a turn into boogie-woogie minimalism. These songs challenge Winston's skill, as does Dr. John's ruminative "Creole Moon," which would seem more appropriate for Winston's technique. But it's not all New Orleans stride and jazz. Winston also throws in some gorgeous originals that are in his more conventional "folk-piano" style. The long ring-outs and sustains of "Gulf Coast Lullaby Part 1 & 2" have all the Winston signatures, as does "Stevenson." Gulf Coast Blues & Impressions is a fun album, but Winston's love of New Orleans piano isn't always done justice in the performance. --John Diliberto

Not classic Geo. Winston, but pretty amazing.......2006-11-10
Not up to George Winston's Standard of Excellence.......2006-11-10
From Solo Piano Publications.......2006-09-15
The CD opens with "New Orleans Shall Rise Again," a Winston original inspired by favorite New Orleans pianists. Spirited and determined, this piece is a great way to begin and is indicative of what is to come on the album. "Creole Moon" by Dr. John is much darker, and Winston's touch is very percussive. James Booker's "Pixie" is a lighthearted highlight. Winston says in the liner notes that Booker has influenced his overall piano playing more than anyone, and Winston seems to feel very comfortable in this style, with its repetitive walking bass and all-over-the-piano right hand. "Stevenson" is a beautiful Winston original dedicated to a dear friend who died last year, filmmaker Stevenson J. Palfi. Sad and reflective, it is a loving tribute and eulogy. Parts 1 and 2 of "Gulf Coast Lullaby" are full of the vast open spaces that Winston is known for. These two pieces and "Stevenson" are much more ballads than blues, and since they are placed consecutively on the CD, feel right at home between the toe-tappers. "When The Saints Go Marching In" begins with a dark and stormy prelude that barely hints of what is coming. Once Winston gets cooking with the song itself, it is unfettered joy and the boisterous good time that is expected in New Orleans. With almost twelve minutes to explore the themes of the song, Winston really lets loose. "Blues for Fess, Beloved" ends the CD with a mournful piece inspired by Professor Longhair (Henry Roeland Byrd), who founded the New Orleans piano scene in the late 1940's. The inspiration for and a strong influence on many, if not all, of the New Orleans-style pianists to follow, this is a sweet and fitting finale to an excellent benefit CD. Recommended!

Swee Relief for Victoria Williams.......2007-03-25
A victory for "Victoria'........2004-07-07
Some missteps, but not bad.......2002-07-09
Probably the darkest song Victoria has ever recorded. Soul Asylum does a good job. Almost as good as the original.
Main Road/Lucinda Williams
Victoria's version is kind of hard to crack, somewhat overproduced. Lucinda does a great job finding the "song" and bringing it into sharp relief. One of the CDs highlights.
Crazy Mary/Pearl Jam
Not a Pearl Jam fan, but this is the definitive version of Crazy Mary. I sure don't miss the Van Dyke Parks string arrangement that bothers me on the original. Eddie Vedder sounds awesome.
Merry Go Round/Buffalo Tom
A delightful, punky version of the original.
Weeds/Michael Penn
Penn does an admirable job. Instrumentation/arrangement is tops, but this is one of those songs that only Victoria can really bring to life.
Animal Wild/Shudder to Think
Indie guitar rock version of one of Vic's lesser-songs sounds like it was written just for them.
Tarbelly and Featherfoot/Lou Reed
I know Lou Reed is a big Victoria fan, but this sounds like a reject from Songs for Drella. Doesn't come close to capturing the wonder of this classic Victoria song.
Opelousas/Maria McKee
McKee sure has a big voice and this is a big production. An interpretation that doesn't stray to far from the original
This Moment/Matthew Sweet
Too bad this has yet to appear on a Victoria studio album. Very nice.
Frying Pan/Evan Dando
Another Victoria classic. I had the fortune of hearing Vic's version first. Some songs just shouldn't be slowed down.
Lights/Jayhawks
Another Victoria song that is kind of hard to grasp. But the Jayhawks turn it into a memorable, twangy treat. Another highlight. The best cut on the CD.
Why Look At The Moon/Waterboys
Fluffy, jaunty, entertaining version, played like an Irish jig or something by the Waterboys.
Big Fish/Giant Sand
Unrecognizable in the hands of Howe and friends. Not very listenable either. For much better Giant Sand/Victoria collaborations, check out Ramp, by Giant Sand.
Holy Spirit/Michelle Shocked
Shocked's dramatic bellowing doesn't really do this song justice. She tries hard. It's okay, I guess.
Great intentions, fair CD.......2002-01-14
The first and foremost goal of this CD was to raise money for musician for Victoria Williams, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and had no medical insurance.
The CD's songs are written by Williams and covered by some of the hottest "alternative" bands of the 90s. How disappointing, then, that the disc's inspired performances are the exception rather than the rule.
Things start out promising enough with Soul Asylum's acid-tongued performance on "Summer of Drugs", which arguably features some of Williams' best lyrics:
"Sister got bit by a copperhead snake in the woods behind the house/Nobody was home so I grabbed her foot and I sucked that poison out/Sister got better in a month or two when the swelling it went down/But I'd started out my teenage years with that poison in my mouth."
Equally outstanding performances are logged by Michael Penn on "Weeds", Pearl Jam on "Crazy Mary" and the Waterboys on the bouncy "Why Look at the Moon", but the rest of the 10 songs are merely fine to passable.
As a Williams fan, it's also worth asking why there isn't a song included by Williams herself, especially since she has a wealth of overlooked music and has continued to tour and record since her diagnosis and this CD's release.
Think about it: if more people bought her original recordings, her relief might be even sweeter.
Uneven, but Worthy.......2000-01-13

The 1996 follow-up CD to For Our Children packs less romp and more hush. Although the stellar lineup includes Celine Dion, Seal, Faith Hill, Natalie Cole, Cher, Luther Vandross, and others, For Our Children, Too is really a lullaby album and its predecessor is a party record. There are more ballads, more R&B singers, and more arrangements mired in overproduction. That said, if you want a gentler collection of songs, this might be your first choice. Seal turns in a poignant rendition of "Puff the Magic Dragon," while Natalie Cole's "Both Sides Now" shows how universal that old Joni Mitchell classic really is. James Taylor and Carly Simon's memorable hit "Mockingbird" is also featured, along with Cher doing a predictable interpretation of "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" from Cinderella. Celine gives "Brahm's Lullaby" her trademark Dion treatment and Luther Vandross turns the protest anthem "If I Had a Hammer" into a moving meditation on peace and equality. Did someone say this music might be too sophisticated for kids? Still, it's for a great cause. --Martin KellerCustomer Reviews:
