For once, a record label actually gives us more bang for the buck, combining two indisputable classics--1969's self-titled debut and the 1970 follow-up Idlewild South--onto one glorious CD. Five urgent notes kick off Spencer Davis's "Don't Want You No More," and by the time that searing instrumental morphs into Gregg Allman's superb slow blues "It's Not My Cross to Bear," it's clear these Georgians mean business. Everyone talks of the Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon covers, the furious twin leads of Duane and Dickey Betts, Gregg's soulful voice and formidable organ, the percussion attack of Jaimoe and Butch Trucks, but what about the songwriting skills? Just start with "Cross to Bear," "Whipping Post," "Dreams," "Revival," "Elizabeth Reed"--are you kidding? These two records blend gritty blues, Southern soul, and psychedelic rock into an exciting creation, and they serve notice: the Allmans will contend for the title of best American rock & roll band. --Marc Greilsamer

THE ORIGINAL ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND. THEIR FIRST TWO ALBUMS........2007-05-16
The jazz-rock instrumental, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, and the acoustic guitar based, world-weary Midnight Rider, both classics, are highlights on the second half of Beginnings, but there is much, much more than that here. This album has no filler, every single song is a classic. The pleading Don't Keep Me Wonderin' and the funky Leave My Blues At Home are also excellant, as is the sad ballad Please Call Home. They also cover Muddy Waters again when bassist Berry Oakley sings (I'm Your) Hoochie Coochie Man. The original Allman Brothers Band released these two albums, and the live At Fillmore East, before Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident. Four months later they released Eat A Peach, which included material recorded before the accident with Duane, and new material without Duane. Then Berry Oakley was killed (also on a motorcycle), taking away another key member of this band. The Allman Brothers Band is still strong today, but this "Duane Era" of the band casts a long shadow of greatness over the band, and they don't try to escape it. Instead they celebrate this epic phase of their history, and their fans do, also. Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks, and Jaimoe. Beginnings, At Fillmore East, and Eat A Peach is their legacy, and each one is a legendary classic.
Back Where It All Began.......2007-03-21
The second half of the CD is the original "Idlewild South" album. Guitarist Dickey Betts comes into his own as a composer with "Revival" and "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," the first of a career of fantastic instrumentals. "Midnight Rider" is probably Gregg Allman's best-known song. The guitar interplay between Duane Allman and Dickey Betts is breathtaking. Berry Oakley does a vocal turn on a radically-reworked, very spooky version of the Muddy Waters classic "Hootchie Coochie Man." "Please Call Home" - does slow blues get any better than this? The wild card on this whole cd is "Leave My Blues at Home." A previous reviewer said something to the effect that James Brown would be proud of this song, and I couldn't agree more.
This CD has all the elements that would make up the Allman Brothers "sound" - the twin lead guitars, two drummers who complement each other, a thunderous bass player who plays like a third lead guitarist, excellent songwriting, and Gregg Allman proving he is one of the finest blues singers alive, if not of all time. An essential CD.
Good, But Poor Re-Mixing.......2006-07-22
Great Set, one of the better live sets of the Allman Brothers Band.
But I have a bone to pick with the producers of the CD. The opening two cuts, I Don't Want You No More and Its Not My Cross to Bear are one song. The Brothers blended them into each other in a seamless wonder that was inspirational. What did the producers do? They chopped up these two songs. I had to buy the original album and record them on the computer to preserve the artists original recording. This was irritating and shows that the producers were more interested in conformity than artistic intent. Grrrrrrr.
End of rant.
Good pick!.......2006-06-21
1. It's two LP's for the price of one-and-a-half, which means you can buy this package for $20, or you can pick up both albums individually for $26.
2. It's both albums one CD. That alone is a pretty good reason.
3. It's simply great music. On this album, you get It's Not My Cross to Bear, Trouble No More, Dreams, Whipping Post, Revival, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Midnight Rider and Hoochie Coochie Man. That alone should be reason enough.
If you haven't bought this album yet, what are you waiting for?

Children have a natural ability to learn multiple languages easily. Studies show that from birth to age 12, a child's brain is open to assimilate and retain other languages. With repeat exposure to another language, your child's mental develpment will be enriched and carry over into all aspects of learning. This entire CD has been sung only in Spanish to immerse the child fully in the language. This method has been proven to be the most effective way to teach secondary languages. This CD finds the LA-born, smooth-jazz star Gerald Albright on a new label, with a new line of saxophones and a new home in Colorado. It's co-produced by some of his heavyweight contemporaries, including Jeff Lorber, Chuckii Booker, and Rex Rideout, and it features Albright's traveling band. All of the 12 tracks showcase Albright's assertive mix of Cannonball Adderley's bravura and Maceo Parker's funkiness--whether he's playing alto, baritone, tenor sax, or flute. His high school friend, Patrice Rushen, who let Albright steal the show with his burning solo on her 1982 single "Forget Me Nots," turns in a nice piano spotlight on the title track. The old Whispers hit "And the Beat Goes On" is reprised with that group's lead vocalists, and trumpeter Chris Botti's Milesiian trumpet leaves its footprint on "Big Shoes." Albright's rousing rendition of "Georgia on My Mind," shows why everybody, from Quincy Jones to Phil Collins, loves his sound. --Eugene Holley, Jr.Customer Reviews:
A great feel-good album ! The master is back !.......2007-03-10
He has recorded seven successful solo albums for Atlantic when he wasn't busy, assisting an impressive, and mammoth, roster of popular R&B artists. Some of the more well-known artists Albright assisted during his career include Anita Baker, Quincy Jones, the Temptations, Phil Collins, Whitney Houston, and many, many more.
His excellent "NEW BEGINNINGS" collection is wide-ranging enough to cover a sultry version of "Georgia on My Mind" and a swaying, uptempo cover of the Whispers' disco-era hit "And the Beat Goes On", a compelling 80's style groove which features the Scott brothers (Whispers) on backing vocals.
The pianist Patrice Rushen makes a guest appearance on the album's title track, and Albright's colleague Jeff Lorber performs on cuts including the velvety "We Got the Groove" and the sinuous "Take Your Time".
Other guest artists are Chris Botti on trumpet,Paul Jaxkson jr. on guitar,Rex Rideout and Chuckii Booker as arrangers.
The uptempo cut "Big Shoes" is a flowing number.
Listen also to the slower "Last But Not Least".
Albright is quite capable of providing a five-star masterpiece, which "New Beginnings" is not. Nonetheless, this 2006 release with Peak Records has more pluses than minuses -- and it is certainly superior to "Dream Come True", "Bermuda Nights", and some of the other duds he recorded for Atlantic in the '80s and '90s.
This is a very strong selection of Smooth Jazz grooves that mixes in Funk and Fusion.
As usual, Gerald's playing is soulful, smooth and fluid. And very enjoyable.
You will love this feel-good album.
Enjoy !

SUBLIME & INCREDIBLE VOCALS~BRAVO MORGANA!!!.......2007-07-17
Masterfully arranged by Bob James and Torrie Zito (Mr. Zito was the one who brilliantly arranged the classic "A Taste Of Honey" for Morgana), this is a tremendous vocal collection that is as good as it gets...Stevie Wonder exclaimed "Morgana King has done the best version of "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" I have heard" and reviews from Rolling Stone to the New York Times were ecstatic with praise for Morgana and this stunning work! Timeless and contemporary is this wondrous musical journey and this would have been huge with promotion but memories of a record company with cash flow problems kept this from happening as it is clear that quality and creativity were not the issue...too bad the Grammy Foundation don't take things like this into consideration as these amazingly soulful and uniquely classic vocals are clearly "Grammy Award" worthy!!! Bravo Morgana King!!!!!
Now if only smart producer would release the other Morgana King masterwork "I Know How It Feels To Be Lonely" from 1968 which has incredible versions of everything from The Beatles and Donavan to other classic contemporaries, then all will be wonderful and fine in the world of blissful and magical vocal music!~

Now, to the review:
Is it the sex pistols? no. ramones? no. dead kennedys? no. But is it punk: Yes. Ever heard of the descendents? They rocked, and were possibly one of the most influential punk bands ever. If I had to compare this album to someone, it would be the descendents. While this album may, at some points, seem to venture into pop-punk, it's some of the best pop-punk yet.
Sure, the recording quality sucks, but that just adds to the awesome feel of this album. The band occassionaly messes up vocally and instrumentally, which makes the album feel very natural. Plus, blink had their own identity at this point, so they weren't exactly like every punk band out there. The songs move along at an awesome pace, with very little space between each track.
However, the album could have been a bit more agressive. It seemed like their singing was kinda held back at some points. Some songs could've gone faster, too. But, all in all, it's a good punk album.

Sometimes it's not how well you sing, it's what you're trying to sing........2006-05-26
You will probably squirm in your seat the first several times you hear him reach the chorus of "Australia." And that won't be the only part that makes you question his ability to self-assess.
BUT ...
What's unique about this album is that Steve is so clearly making a sincere attempt to sing exactly what is in his head. On other albums, he keeps most of the lyrics more closely in his vocal range, so you only hear the odd tonal quality of his voice, not an actual inability to hit the pitches. But on this album, he clearly just doesn't care about his own limitations. He knows where he wants the melody to go, and come hell or high water, he's going to get his vocal cords to go there -- or at least to get in the neighborhood.
The result is a very honest, sometimes raw, and always impassioned set of performances. And to make matters easier for the listener, a great deal of the vocals are layered, so that the harmonies blend out many of the imperfections that are more obvious in the solo lines.
Beyond this, the songs are simply terrific. "The Nature of the Sea" is captivating from its first bar -- and I'll guarantee that even if you didn't know the title, you'd hear the ocean in the instrumentation. The horns on "The Lost Symphony" are fabulous; the orchestra on "Beginnings" mops the floor with anything on "Magnification"; and "Ram" makes you wish for more songs with a washboard in them.
Yes albums tend to be awash in mysticism and metaphor; this album has a beautiful real-world foundation to it. It is music of this Earth -- vast in variation, full of struggles, and, yes, not without its flaws.
To echo another reviewer, I would rather hear Steve straining for glory and missing on this album than listen to Jon playing it safe and staying in key on everything since the late '80s.
...went into the wood and never looked back.......2006-05-03
Steve is a fantastic musician and this disc shows it.
I love this album ... even after all this time.
Beginnings is a Guitar (and vocal) Masterpiece.......2006-05-01
I Challenge Yes To Put Out A New Album As Great As This.......2005-10-07
Sure, when this album first came out in 1975, it took me a little while to get used to the vocals. Steve Howe does have an unusual voice. And I was only sixteen at the time.
But I have long since come to appreciate this album and Steve Howe's vocals on it. In fact, I think his voice is haunting. And the song writing on this album is brilliant.
I would much rather hear Steve Howe sing the sophisticated music that appears on this album than hear Jon Anderson sing the primitive music that appears on recent Yes albums such as "Magnification".
