"You sound like you're having a good old time," a purist Dylan fan is spotted telling the artist in the documentary Don't Look Back just after the release of this, his first (half-)electric album. He certainly does. Updating Chicago blues forms with hilarious, tough lyrics--in fact, all but stealing the meter of Chuck Berry's "Too Much Monkey Business" for "Subterranean Homesick Blues"--on one side, dropping some of his most devastating solo acoustic science ("It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," "Mr. Tambourine Man") on the other, the first of Dylan's two 1965 long-players broke it right down with style, substance, and elegance. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
THE most influential album of the sixties.......2007-07-16
This is where, in retrospect, it all started. I didn't realize it at the time but I do now. There were two sixties, the early 60-64, Beach Boys, Frankie Avalon, early Beatle "I Want to Hold you Hand", crew-cut, A-line dress, boufant hair, weejun sixties, and the other sixties, the Revolver, Sgt Pepper, Jimi Hendrix, Steppenwolf, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Cream, United States of America, sixties that everyone today thinks was the sixties which happened after 1965. and it started here!
Bob Dylan, the antiwar, civil-rights, Woody Guthrie-imitating darling of the folksingers, the Voice and Conscience of his Generation, after penning "Blowin in the Wind", and "The Masters of War", stunned his purist followers with "Bringing it All Back Home". Electric instruments and a turn from trying to change the world by preaching at it to a bemused surreal satire. This, and "Revolver" are the two most influential albums of the sixties, maybe of music history. I remember.
The Beatles were wildly popular with younger listeners, but generally dismissed by music critics of the time as being a wildly sucessful but totally Pop phenominon. Dylan said they were "Bubblegum". Dylan's friend Al Aronowitz (sp?), said that the Beatles weren't that bad. Dylan and friend were introduced to the Beatles at a certain party in Manhattan AUG 64, wherein there was some smoking. Dylan and Lennon talked and found they had a lot in common. Dylan suggested Lennon should put more of his feelings into his songs. Following this party the Beatles became much more introspective, and a few months later "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver'!. See DVD "No Direction Home" directed by Martin Scorsese for details...
"Johnnies in the basement
mixing up the medicine,
I'm on the pavement
Thinkin' about the government...
...Maggie comes, fleet feet,
Face full of black soot
Talkin the the Heat put
Plants in the bed, but
The phones tapped, anyway,
orders from the D.A.,
say they must bust in early May...
"...Keep a clean nose,
Watch for Plainclothes,
You don't need a Weatherman
To know which way the wind blows!...
...Please her, please him.
Twenty years of schoolin'
and they put you on the Day Shift"...
How that for starting off with a (paranoid) bang? The first rap song about being surveilled in a police state.
(and where are those Weathermen, now ...?)
or how about the heartfelt:
"...She's got everything she needs
she's an artist
She don't look back.
she can take the dark out of the nighttime
and paint the daytime black..."
or the workaday world of:
"...He hands you a nickel,
He hands you a dime,
He askes you with a grin if you're having a good time?
And he fines you every time you slam the door.
I aint gonna work on Maggie Farm no more..."
(have you had bosses like that?)
or the surreal 115th dream:
"I was riding on the Mayflower when I thought I spotted land
I yelled for captain Arab, I'll have you understand,
Who came running to the deck, said 'boys, forget the whale
we're goin over yonder, cut the engines, change the sail' ...
...I think I'll call it 'America' I said as we hit land.
I took a deep breath, I fell down, I could not stand...
...A telephone was ringing, it just about blew my mind,
When I picked it up and said 'Hello', this foot came through the line...
...I repeated that my friends were all in jail with a sigh,
He gave me his card, he said 'call me if they die'..."
"...I said,'you know, they refused Jesus, too'
he said 'you're NOT Him'..."
Now those are lyrics!
Pure poetry, funny, insightful. The sheer volume of Dylan's genius is so overwhelming you can only get it in small amounts - I remember I didn't understand all at first. I still hear new ideas in these songs after all these years. Notes from the Underground.
And the backup band isn't "The Band", as I always thought, it's blues guitar great Michael Bloomfield and Al Kooper, trying to learn organ.
After this brilliant album, Dylan met and influenced the Beatles. The folkies (who had played for years in coffee shops where they learned to play and sing harmony and write meaningful songs) all picked up electric instruments. Country Joe and the Fish, Lovin Spoonful, etc. The Byrds did an electric version of his Pied Piper song "Mr Tambourine Man" ("...take me disappearing through the smoke rings of my mind..."). Then came Donovan's "Sunshine Superman", Vanilla Fudge's "You Keep me Hangin On". After that, there was a sea change in culture and in popular music. There was an explosion.
It started here.
This album cannot be recommended too highly (despite the fact that Dylan doesn't have a singing voice like Jim Morrison or Frank Sinatra).
bringing it all back to where it belongs.......2007-05-27
The set-list you can easily find here so i won't go through it all, but to miss this album would be to miss some of the classic Dylan and that would be to deny yourself just the chance to see whether or not you like this minstel or not. You may decide not - but don't make that decision until you've at least heard this one.
Dylan albums, like Dylan songs, are difficult to choose a "favorite." I'd be hard-pressed to pick a favorite Dylan song, but if i have to pick an album, and i admit this is tough, then this would be it.
Cheers,
s.r.p.
BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME IS BOB DYLAN AT HIS VERY BEST !.......2007-04-26
My love she speaks like silence,
Without ideals or violence,
She doesn't have to say she's faithful,
Yet she's true, like ice, like fire.
Pure Dylan. Bringing It All Back Home has everything for the Bob Dylan fan. Folk songs, rock songs, and classic Dylan lyrics. It's a great album from a great artist at his very best.
A good place to start.......2007-03-12
The album has quite a diverse selection of songs; fast, bluesy songs ("Subterranean Homesick Blues", "Maggie's Farm", "Outlaw Blues"), slower, melodic love ballads ("She Belongs To Me", "Love Minus Zero/ No Limit"), poetic folk songs ("Mr. Tambourine Man", "Gates Of Eden") and comedy ("Bob Dylan's 115th Dream"). One of the best songs on the album is the surreal "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue". This song always fills me with inspiration everytime I listen to it.
This is a great album and a good place to start.
Folk Rock's Definitive Masterpiece.......2007-02-10
Heralding the album, "Subterranean Homesick Blues," while not as dramatic as "Like a Rolling Stone" is easily as brilliant. Complete with cutting, social commentary and plenty of images to debunk the nine-to-five existence, Dylan spills out his surreal period full throttle. Anthems rain with the raunchy "Outlaw Blues" and the folky "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)". Hypnotic, every song pulls a punch--or doesn't pull any punches! The most famous mesmerizing development is "Mr. Tambourine Man," making Dylan a troubadour for altered consciousness*. Despite the crossover, Dylan continued to be a great storyteller. The first person "Maggie's Farm" showcases his familiar wit with the details of menial labor from hell. Then, "On the Road Again" captures the same idea, but with more of a vagabond flair. "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream" meets every element at the crossroads by telling a surreal story with pointed observations. However, some of the most delightful moments reflect upon love. "She Belongs to Me" and "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" both exalt and debunk the romantic tradition he helped overthrow. "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" ends the album with a brilliant story about a misfit who trashes every sensibility of romantic notions.
An unqualified achievement, 'Bringing It All Back Home' synthesizes the outlaw with the dreamer where both folk and rock, tradition and iconoclasm meet head on and make music and culture new.
(*Dylan has moved on, and hopefully so can we.)

Back Home is Eric Clapton in a good mood, filled with upbeat toe-tappers about hearth and home (a young child even puts in a cameo on "So Tired"). Blues-rock ("Lost and Found"), reggae ("Revolution"), and R&B (the Spinners' "Love Don't Love Nobody") mingle comfortably with laid-back pop (George Harrison's "Love Comes to Everyone"). Recorded around the same time as Me and Mr. Johnson, his bestselling collection of Robert Johnson songs, Clapton's first recording of (mostly) original material since 2001's Reptile is a combination of solo compositions, covers, and collaborations with writing partner Simon Climie. Backing musicians include John Mayer (guitar), Blind Faith mate Steve Winwood (synthesizer), and longtime associate Billy Preston (keyboards), whose expertise with the Hammond B3 shines brightest on the Vince Gill cowritten "One Day". There are no real surprises on Back Home, just Clapton doing what he does best--with an extra spring in his step. --Kathleen C. FennessyAlbum Description

I liked it.......2007-05-08
Eric looses his shoulder round into a comfortable slope.
It is nicely laid back yet has some vitality.
Has God found a new religion?.......2007-05-01
The tracks are more upbeat and hearty than the Clapton tracks that reeled us in, but what do you expect? Art is a reflection of heart, and that has never been more evident than in this album. At long last Eric is happy, after a life of angst that included losing his son (inspiring the song "Tears in Heaven"), and beating a heroin addiction, the man lovingly known as Slowhand is happy, is that such a bad thing?
That being said, this isn't your typical easy-listening album either. Tracks like "one track mind", "piece of my heart" and George Harrison's "Love Come to Everyone" really let Clapton's musical genius shine.
I gave the album 4/5 stars because although it is a solid album, with catchy beats, stirring lyrics and the brilliance that is Sir Eric Clapton, it lacks the character that has made SlowHand the guitar God that we all revere.
Good Evolution.......2007-03-19
No Shakespear, but good listening .......2007-03-05
Okay, fair is fair, the opening track is a little self absorbed and weak. The musicianship rocks, but the lyrics are trite. The second one isn't much better. After this, though, the CD really picks up. The songs are well crafted, the lyrics don't swerve back into limbo territory. "Piece of My Heart" is better than any "sway" love song I've heard in a while, although we are not living in romantic times. " Back Home" , the finishing set, does confirm that Clapton has been on quite a journey, but he's ready to put aside the weary journeyman in favor of the settled, stable soul. What's wrong with that?
This CD is not Eric's best, but it is also not a throw-away. Open your mind and let Clapton open his heart!

The Road Back Home is the first `Best Of' compilation by the now legendary Swedish progressive rockers. The Road Back Home features 27 classic Flower Kings tracks which have been personally hand-picked and re-mastered by the band's founder and driving force, Roine Stolt, giving the listener a unique and comprehensive front-row look into band's evolution and creative process. The compilation also features a previously unreleased cover version of the classic Genesis song, Cinema Show.Customer Reviews:
The Kings even better.......2007-07-23
Messin' with Success.......2007-07-03
OK, let me get this off my chest first - why, oh why would you play with the perfection that is the original "Church of Your Heart"? When I saw this on the CD's pre-release playlist on the TFK website, I was counting the days until it arrived just to hear a remastering of this song. (I think all TFK fans can agree that while "Stardust We Are" is one of the best albums of all time, it is also one compressed sonic mess). But instead of a nice clean remastering, we get a complete remix, and, gasp - an entire section of the song - a critical section in my eyes - is totally gone! Disappointed hardly covers it.
And therein lies the problem, for me. Most of these songs weren't just remastered, they were remixed as well. Instruments are added or taken away, changing the complexion of the songs in someways good but mostly not. For the most part, the new productions just don't stand up to the old. Several tunes, like "World Without a Heart" sound lifeless, are missing key instrumental parts (where is the lovely piano part in WWAH?) or have had the sometimes rough edges dulled down until they don't have the same impact the originals did.
Roine evidently has disdained the use of reverb for the new mixes, and for me, this new "dry" sound doesn't serve this type of music well.
Overall, it WAS a somewhat fun first listen, and of course the songs are pretty much wonderful anyway, but while there are great moments, I can't imagine listening to this one again anytime soon.
Having said that, thanks Roine for the effort - the liner notes are indeed exceptional, and maybe there is hope that you'll find time to go back and remaster (but NOT remix) the classic TFK albums like Stardust We Are, Flower Power and Rainmaker. Wouldja, please????
Nothing Exciting.......2007-07-02
The remixing doesn't seems to improve the songs much and actually seems to make them 'softer.' I word I could use is 'pillowy'....almost giving some of the slower parts of songs a new-age feel to them (not a good thing in my opinion). The punch of the original songs is missing, replaced by a broadening effect to fully take up the sonic range. Another point of dissapontment......should you really mess with "Church of Your Heart?" The classic Flower Kings song has been truncated and the dramatic key change at the last part of the original version is gone. That was the part of the song that got me hooked on the song in the the first place. Also "I am the Sun part II" seems to be truncated as well, and again, the best part of the song, in my opinion, is missing.
Songs picked from newer releases (Adam + Eve and Paradox Hotel) are less affected by the mixing and come off much like the originals.
All-in-all, this is a good collection of Flower King songs, but the remixing doesn't seem that great of an improvement of the originals.
I agree with Murat.......2007-06-28
Excellent chronicle of The Flower Kings sound.......2007-06-26
The song long-time fans will want to hear the most will probably be "Little Deceiver", a leftover from the band's Rainmaker sessions. It is an interesting experiment where the tune wanders off more into Dire Straits-goes-country territory, bringing forth a true solo statement from Stolt and Froberg who are responsible for everything this song has to offer: unusual harmony vocals, cool loops and sound effects, and steady, straightforward drumming.
Also new on the CD is the band's Genesis tribute "Cinema Show", originally recorded in 1998. Being one of the greatest Genesis songs ever, Stolt says the band was rather nervous while recording it, but the result is nothing short of mindblowing. The acoustic guitar tone, the layered melodies, the awesome vocal parts, and last but not the least, Tomas Bodin's mindblowingly beautiful key solo that not only honours Tony Banks' original work but also adds its own touch to it -- everything is phenomenal about this piece. As noted in the liner notes, that solo is testimony that "great keys can be played with emotion without a trace of blues or jazz".
It would be impossible and meaningless to describe each song on this compilation. After all, they all represent a different era of the band; and they are meant to be enjoyed best in their original context. However, the little nuances brought out in the mixing stage do warrant a mention. "Cosmic Lover", for instance, features new vocal and some clarinet addition as well as a heavier focus on rhythm. This brings out the funky aesthetic and underscores the brilliant Beatles-like vocal harmony. "Stupid Girl" has a brand new guitar solo; and truth be told, I can't choose which one I like better cause the new one is truly sublime. Also, the guitar solo of "A Kings Prayer", one of the greatest Flower Kings songs ever, is different. I love how the deep message is conveyed on this one amidst glimmering acoustic guitar notes and McCartney-like vocal arrangements.
The last few minutes of "Church of Your Heart" have been cut off, and rightly so. The result is a more direct and powerful tune driven by tons of organ work by Bodin and soaring harmonies by Hasse Froberg. The African tribal rhythms merge seamlessly with a gorgeous soprano sax arrangement on "Grand Old World" whilst "Monkey Business" proves once again why everything on Unfold the Future is gold. Jonas Reingold's fretless bass, Hasse Bruniusson's percussion rhythms, and Stolt's unmistakable guitars form the musical aspect of the otherwise tragic lyrical theme. Stolt's vocal part in the intro of "The Road Back Home" has been replaced by Hasse's more fitting singing -- perhaps the best Retropolis song with its melodic hook and blazing Hammond elements.
The songs with Pain of Salvation's Daniel Gildenlow providing backing harmonies have mostly been left untouched, such as "Starlight Man" and "Cosmic Circus", but you can still tell a remix was done on them. The somewhat cluttered soundscape layering of the former piece seems totally gone on the reworked version of "Different People" off of Stardust We Are. Unlike the original version, the piece has a stronger psychedelic centre here thanks to Stolt's meticulous remixing, and the melodious flow is more evocative. The backing voices have enhanced this cut greatly as well.
It doesn't matter whether you're a long-time fan or a new listener. Any Flower Kings fan should pick this up in a heart beat and hear these songs in their new format. If you have never heard any of Flower Kings' studio albums, on the other hand, then, depending on the songs you like the best here, you should go and pick it up impromptu. Once you're hooked, you'll want to have their entire discography anyway.
Kudos to Roine Stolt for not only compiling and remixing all these songs, but also for the detailed song-by-song analysis he offers in the liner notes. He even designed the booklet and cover art himself and added some photos as well. The packaging is superb -- it couldn't be any better.
I wish all compilation albums were this amazing.

You won't find a warmer, more powerful and moving tribute to the City of New Orleans and its people and culture than this five-star, 13-track album that features some of the city's most revered artists. Young and old, the New Orleans Social Club members capture many facets of the Katrina tragedy while also celebrating in distinctive 'Nawlins styles the music that helped make American popular culture famous the world over. Nearly everything on this sumptuous collection of angry, compassionate, patriotic and hopeful sentiments are cover songs. But they are covers like you've never heard before in the hands of Cyrill and Ivan Neville, Marcia Ball in duet with Irma Thomas. Dr. John, Henry Butler, the subdudes and others. While Ivan Neville reworks Credence Clearwater's "Fortunate Son" into an even more sympathetic victim of an alienating bureaucratic system that underscores this democracy's appetite for war and domestic neglect, the Mighty Chariots of Fire let go a joyful gospel challenge to the nation in "991/2 Won't Do." But the political hue and cry that hangs over many of these tracks, including Dr. John's impromptu and melancholy reading of Fats Domino's "Walking to New Orleans," there are also some classic New Orleans music moments where engaging style, spirit and rhythm and nutthin' else rules the day. Just check Trombone Shorty's tasty "Hey Troy, Your Mama's Calling You," or The Sixth Ward All-Star Brass Band Revue whipping up a familiar medley of tunes as if it were a big pot of gumbo, and you know right then that the spirit of the city can never die, come hell or high water. Highly recommended. -- Martin KellerCustomer Reviews:

"Sing Me back Home", from the New Orleans Social Club, has a cast that came together after the Katrina disaster. The super group, featuring Neville Brother Ivan and Meter Leo Nocentelli--lay down piano-heavy Rock and Blues with such musicians as Irma Thomas, Dr. John, Cyril Neville, and the Subdudes, among others, bring the sorrow, anger, hope, and soul of the city's people. These musicians know precisely what it means to miss New Orleans, and they're singing, as the title suggests, to ensure that their city's spirit comes home. Grammy producers and friends to music, Leo Sacks and Ray Bardani gathered a dream team of their Delta-born musicians for a collection of songs that sing with and to the soul. This CD was recorded in just a week.
Cyril Neville's "This is My Country" and you feel the urgency and love for his city.
Ivan Neville sings the John Forgery's "Fortunate Son," The flavor of New Orleans comes alive with this rendtion.
"Look Up" is a stirring spiritual rendition by Irma Thomas and Marcia Ball.
Dr John sings "Walking To New Orleans", sorting the pace to the return.
Trombone Shorty's spirited "Hey Troy, Your Mama's Calling You{ begs for foot tappin and hand clappin'.
"Loving You Is On My Mind" by the entire group is an emotionally laden song.
"Somewhere" by Henry Butler is a particularly affecting song.
"99 1/2 Won't Do" by The Mighty Chariots of Fire has a feel of excitement and this world re-owned gospel choir sings it with gusto.
The Subdues sing "Make A better World" this group of Delta City musicians came together to sing for their city.
"First Taste Of Hurt" by Willie Tee, who is a Louisiana swamp singer, with a fine voice, sing sof the pain they all feel.
"Where Y'At? (Medley: Jesus On The Main Line\ I'm Walking\ The Saints" The Sixth Ward All-Star Brass Band Revue featuring Brother Charles Neville is a rousing and fitting review of songs from NOLA.
"Chase" sung by Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, a harmonic tribal Unity that dates from the 1800's. This song sings about "no where to go, why chase me away".
"Why" sung by John Boutte sums up the mindset of the damaged Delta through Annie Lennox's song. John Boutte who was in Brazil when the hurricane hit but returned right away, says, "I've been here listening to everybody sling arrows at each other and no one is doing anything. Why do I see empty trucks passing by? The wind didn't do it, the rain didn't do it, the levee did it. We'll always have a will to make it. It's human nature. Hope lies in the people of New Orleans."
There is some feeling of loss and negativity by the participants in their minds but not in this CD. This is a passionate meeting of souls who have come together to sing for their city. There is sorrow, loss and wounded pride mixed with the love of their city. It all shows in "Sing Me back Home".
Highly Recommended. prisrob 7-01-06

It would have been far better if it had been played once on pipes alone and then again with the brass dropped in behind the pipes. A thousand highlanders screaming across the battlefield, followed by the thousand horse cavalry charge. Just thinking about it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand and my blood pressure go through the roof.
This album is magnificent, but it could have been awesome.
Updated Amazing Grace.......2003-05-09
The second part of the CD contains recordings of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards from the later 1970s. The listener will note that there is a subtle, but different recorded sound to the bands. They don't come across quite as clear as in the first 12 tracks on the CD. Again, there is the same rich selection of music with imaginative arrangements and unusual sounds. The regimental band gets highlighted more in these remaining tracks and the same versatility is still there. The "Slave Chorus" from Verdi's "Nabucco Opera" gets an interesting modern treatment. "Moonliner Rock March" is another great arrangement of rock tunes that gets the special Royal Scots Dragoon Guards touch. The pipes and drums are back with several combined medley's as well as two solo displays. The drummers show their stuff in "Drummer's Salute" displaying their modern percussion techniques that are still inspiring today for the pipe band world. All in all a worthy continuation of the "Amazing Grace" tradition that was started in 1971 and carred on since then. It's good to see that some of the many recordings the bands made through the years are now on CD. Enjoy the unique sound of the bands of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards who did a lot to popularize Scottish and military band music in general around the world. Truly a legend of "Amazing Grace"

Released during the era of leisure suits and pet rocks, the film Superman: The Movie has aged about as well. But the often-clumsy charms of Richard Donner's cartoonish, hit-and-miss take on the Man of Steel was blessed with at least one superlative artistic effort: John Williams's epic score. The composer's Oscar-nominated music (coming on the heels of Star Wars and Close Encounters) was a wall-to-wall heroic symphony, rife with memorable melodies and ominous arrangements. Almost every original cut on this soundtrack appears in an expanded version, supplemented by nearly a dozen previously unreleased cues and alternate takes. Featuring a deluxe slipcase and extensive, new liner notes, this is the definitive release of one of Maestro Williams's greatest scores. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Original 1978 Recording?.......2007-04-04
AWESOME! John Williams shows again why he's the master of movie scores.......2006-08-31
The original soundtrack release from 1978, while still an excellent collection, was sadly lacking in several of the best cues from the film. Most important of these was Track 12 (Disc 1) in which the helicopter crashes on the Daily Planet's roof and dangles precariously above the street. Williams builds on it, introducing Superman's theme into it as Clark Kent runs across the street, then rips open his shirt to reveal the 'S' - the symbol of the House of El - then enters the revolving door & exits as Superman. At the end of this is one of my favorite cues; the Superman theme is played as the Man of Steel appears above Metropolis, flying over the city on the hunt for criminals. 'Crime of the Century' (Track 6, Disc 2) was one of my favorite cues; this one portrayed the missile convoy as it made its way along the freeway, where Luthor staged the accident to get his cronies close enough to sabotage the missiles. There are too many new tracks to list here that should have been included the first time around, just a lack of space precluded this from happening.

Broadway takes on the spiritual ..........2004-01-29
I'm going to be the dissenting voice here: thank goodness I signed this disk out of the public library 'cause I'm sure not going to listen to it twice.
There is nothing wrong with the performances. Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle sing beautifully, and there's no problem with the pick-up orchestra under James Levine.
The problem, and it's huge, is the conception of the show and the musical arrangements. To make the video marketable, I suppose, the producers decided that the concert had to be big: big names, big arrangements, big effects. So we have eighteen spirituals given the musical theatre treatment, with a philharmonic chorus providing chain-gang sound effects, big brass, and big percussion -- including a chinese gong. A chinese gong in a spiritual??? Spare me! Almost every track turns out sounding like either a curtain-raiser or a big, end-of-act production number with cute and predictable modulations between some of the stanzas and the sort of curly-cue orchestral ornamentation typical of Broadway shows.
And you know what? It all kills the spirituals stone dead. The spiritual is one of those musical forms where less is more and very little is best of all. That's how they started, after all. That's how and why they worked for their original audiences, and that's why they were powerful enough to make the transition from folk song to art song. If you want to hear Battle sing spirituals that are irresistible, listen to the set on her Salzburg recital CD, also with Levine (ASIN B00000E31B). There, the music speaks for itself and speaks with a strength and a beauty that the tracks on this disk never approach.
