Plucked from Boston's famed Berklee School of Music, Apollo Sunshine is another in the line of hook-heavy catches by New York's spinART label, and a whirlwind tour schedule has blistered its sophomore release with a merry-go-round of pop melodies splashed with claustrophobic harmonies. The band parlays its tuneful edification into an experimental collage, bouncing between art school rock, guitar-heavy psychedelia and keyboard hippiedom, yet interconnected by lyrics that are both shrewd and satisfying. "What we love is so much less that what we have," admits singer/guitarist Sam Cohen in "A Finger Pointing at the Moon," an ode to the absurdity of words that's bound by guitar and triangle percussion. Just a half-minute long, it's the perfect lead-in to the Pixies-influenced "Phoney Marony" and the mystical instrumental "The Hotter, the Wetter, the Better", and an indication to the amount of lyrical and melodic landscape Apollo Sunshine can cover in just over 38 minutes. --Scott Holter

Village Voice
The powerpop trio contemplates childhood through progressiveness, a toybox of hooks, and an unhinged penchant for sonic breakdowns and blowups.

4 out of 5 stars it's the 1st decade of the 21st century and talent is making a comeback.......2007-02-21

talent is back in vogue during this 1st decade of the 21st century, and i, for one, am glad. for awhile there people knowing how to play their instruments well was out of style, with all the depressed kids banging their instruments and staring down at the floor with hair in their eyes. this band can stand up proud and show their stuff. yes, they are talented, and should not be ashamed of it. powerpop with great hooks, many shades of great guitar riffs, and even plenty of emotion. fantastic to have talented folks back in the studio. watchout for the backlash though, you know it's just around the bend.

4 out of 5 stars Okay but..........2006-09-01

This is a good album, but somehow, for me, not quite as interesting or satisfying as "Katonah." They sound a little more commercialized to me, especially on Phoney Maroney and Today is the Day. My favorite tune on this release is the last one, "Bed" which has some nice harmonies, and reminds me a little of Yo La Tengo, the legendary Indie band. If this is your first time hearing Apollo then you really need to get "Katonah" instead. That one will knock your socks off! This cd is a decent second album from this up and coming group.

I purchased this album in New York City on a beautiful saturday afternoon. My band was playing friday night in the village so I decided to hang out for a while and walk around on Saturday. I wen't into Virgin and bought =Apollo Sunshine=. On the way back to Boston I listened through the album and wasn't as thrilled with it as I thought I would be. I took it out and popped in something else, Ozzy? I went back to Apollo after one Ozzy song and listened through it's entirety again........... and again, and again. Everytime I listened, the songs became more fun to sing to, more familiar, and more addictive. I definitely recommend that everyone go out and buy Apollo Sunshine, they'll move you.

5 out of 5 stars Just a great album........2006-02-08

Just a great album. Never boring or lilty or whiny or stupid pop. A wide spectrum of sounds is displayed here and certainly exhibits the band's talents. Too many songs to say there is a highlight but some of my fav's are 'Flip!', 'Magnolia' and 'Today is the Day.' The music is melodious and catchy but not like the radio. Highly recommended for open minds.

5 out of 5 stars representing the new wave of music.......2006-01-01

it seems that all musicians that come out of the berklee school of music are amazing, but apollo sunshine has a lot more going for them then just pure skill. The guys in Apollo Sunshine encompass the musical knowledge of any top berklee graduades, but stand out with their ability to capture the current direction of music these days. Apollo Sunshine reflects the current musical atmosphere sharply; combining a broad spectrum of past musical trends into a confused and progressive, yet solid and accessible sound. 5 stars, no question.

5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Debut.......2006-09-01

This is one of those albums that takes a few listens before you really start to appreciate its rich textures and complexity, at least for me. Katonah has some really beautiful moments on it that caught me by surprise. Perhaps the two best songs are "I was on the Moon" and "The Egg", but the whole album is quite an interesting listening experience. You can hear influences of other bands, such as the Grateful Dead and the Beatles, but in the end these guys create a very unique and full sound. Although it is now three years old, this one still has me riveted.

5 out of 5 stars Katonah = Exceptional.......2006-02-16

This album is without a doubt worth buying. If you disagree, i'll buy you and eat your soul. I was driving around Andover with my friend and bass player at the time Alan Lafranchi and he had a demo of some of Apollo Sunshines early music. I was on the moon along with an awesome beatlesesque song with lots of Bells was on the disc. I was intrigued at the least and wanted to hear more immediately. I bought the album and listened to it in the car, the shower, ballroom dancing, pie eating contests, fishing bass, levitating and occasionally while sleeping. I learned the keyboard parts immediately and still like playing them accoustically on the piani. This album has an unstoppable aesthetic to it. It's no wonder why this band is breaking ground as we speak. ROCK ON BOYS.

5 out of 5 stars Apollo Sunshine .......2005-09-29

Apollo Sunshine's new self titled album rocks! It's fun, easy to listen to to, and thought provoking (hear: "A Finger Pointing At The Moon"). The first track "Flip!" is cool because it has a lot of expected highs and lows. You'll definitely be playing this one on repeat. "This Is The Day" is another song worth checking out. It's an upbeat song that sounds like reminds me of just a cool, laid back feel...like Summer. Overall, the album reflects a cool, creative band that has something new and fresh for all Rock fans.

5 out of 5 stars Grrrr...ATE!.......2005-05-07

Apollo Sunshine has quickly become my new favorite band. After listening to the bands new Ep, I decided to peer back through the mists of time and give the bands previous album a look see. Boy am I glad I did. The electrically charged "Katonah" opens the record like a robotic lullaby. Most of the time instrumentals put me to sleep, this one left me in awe. Brilliant keyboards. The muli-textured, and amazingly deep "Fear of Heights" follows. So much goes on in this song, that to describe it all would take me all day (and night). Let's just say that this song, like all the others on this album, are like stories-they all have complex beginings, middles, and endings. Song structure is a big deal for these boys. My favorite moment of the record happens in the middle of this song...where it seems the song (which has slowed considerably) is over-after a long pause the listener gets kicks his/her ass kicked but a screaming reprise. Awesome keyboard/organ solo's follow.

"I Was On The Moon" the closest this indie record has to a "single," is a brilliant-almost McCartney-esque rocker. While it's bouyant and happy, the dark lyrics reveal a nearly abandonded, modern childhood. Some really great guitar moments and catchy-as-a-cold chorus make this one a winner. Apollo Sunshine reminds me of The Shins (though not as somber). If you like The Shins, you'll eat this album up (with a spoon). The harder song "Happening" and the poppy "The Egg" deserve to be framed and hung on a wall. This is art rock without the prissy froo-froo.

Apollo Sunshine need your support, because this kind of brilliant, energetic music just doesn't pay the bills. It will never be accepted the way it probably should be. At best, this band could be another Shins (indie critic flavors of the month). More than likely they'll put out one more album, and then give up. And that's a damn shame. In this dreary age of whitewashed corporate rock, the world could use more Sunshine.

5 out of 5 stars Best I've Heard all Year!.......2005-03-22

These guys first caught my attention when they came through Detroit opening for Hot Hot Heat 2 years ago. Also on the bill was the Starlight Mints, another pop-rockatoonish band worth a listen.

Anyway, I was blown away. Smart, a little nutters, and obvious musical geniouses, They didn't even have a CD then, but they were already stuck in my mind.

I finally caught Katonah when they swung through Ann Arbor last year, a few weeks before their appearance on Carson Daly's show. It outdid my expectations. Garage rock has had its day. It's Bathroom Rock's time now.
