Editorial Reviews

Product Description
This double live disc is packed with percolating rhythms, thought provoking lyrics, and soaring vocals that truly capture the raw energy and power of O.A.R.'s live performance. While the songs were recorded in just a few days time (at NYC's Hammerstein Ballroom), the unified, uplifting spirit was there long before the record button was pressed.

5 out of 5 stars O.A.R. should be called G.O.D........2007-02-07

I love this band to death. They are my favorite band, I've followed them since day 1 and have been to numerous amount of live concerts. THIS CD IS AMAZING. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! DVD is just as great! I hope they're around for another 20 years.

STANDOUT TRACKS: POKER, MR. BROWN, SO MOVED ON, RIGHT ON TIME, KING OF THE THING, CITY ON DOWN/DELICATE FEW, OLD MAN TIME.

I think this is an good album for live. Well done and energetic. I'd recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Good to OK.......2006-06-15

I finally went and saw the band O.A.R. the other day at San Diego State University. I had been hearing about this band all year from my friends, but have only heard a handful of songs off the good old iPod. As a fan of jam bands I was impressed by O.A.R.s stage presence and posititive attitude. They were a little weak instrumentally, but overall I had a great time! Anyways this review is about the album 34th & 8th. After seeing the band live I let this album pop my O.A.R. CD collection cherry. After listening to it a bunch something sounds like it is missing. There are not many exciting songs and I swear the singer is going to ruin his vocal folds. I enjoy the album every now and then, but will not add it to my top albums to play. I think the playlist is lacking and I wish the lead guitarist (not the singer) would be less timid, both live and on the album. If you want an awesome Jam band, try Umphrey's McGee or the fathers of it all, The Grateful Dead.

      5 out of 5 stars A holiday classic.......2004-02-11

This is one of the all-time great holiday soundtracks. It ranks
right up there with "Home Alone"!The songs are great(Kenny G's
"Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" is a gem!),but it's
the instrumentals that really stand out-that main theme is
beautiful! As companion volumes,I recommend the complete
orchestral score CDs for both the 1994 and 1947 versions,
which are available online at www.intrada.com.

5 out of 5 stars Looking for a good Christmas mix?.......2003-07-24

Then this is your cd. The whole cd will have you singing along and tapping your toes. The songs range from fun and unbeat (Natalie Cole's "Jingle Bells"), to easy jazz (Ray Charles "Santa Claus is Coming to Town"), to beautiful and soothing (Sarah McLachlan's "Song for a Winter's Night"). It has been one of my favorite Christmas cds for years.

5 out of 5 stars A really Good Christmas Album.......2001-12-10

Great album with songs by great performers. The music was as good as the movie. I really enjoyed Sarah McLachlan's Song For A Winter's Night, and Natalie Cole's Jingle Bells.

4 out of 5 stars Better Variety Than Most Holiday Radio Programming.......2004-12-12

Driving home to Maine for Thanksgiving, I found myself (as usual) switching stations constantly along the Mass Pike. I can't think of any other stretch of road where the signals go in and out so quickly. Well, it makes for some variety, I suppose, but it's kinda distracting. I really have to get a car CD player one of these days. If only for safety's sake.

One thing I discovered is the number of stations that were already in high holiday mode (as in EXCLUSIVE holiday mode). Now I hate to be a Scrooge, but a steady diet of anything can get pretty maddening. At least, if there were a mix of styles. Problem is, as radio station playlists become more and more restrictive, genre-wise, the special holiday programming becomes increasingly samey too.

The nice thing about the soundtrack for the 1994 version of MIRACLE ON 34TH ST. is that it actually has the kind of variety you wish you'd find more of in broadcasting. It's a mixed bag, but not outrageously so. Fans of Natalie Cole can usually deal with listening to Dionne Warwick (and vice versa). Nobody in Ray Charles' camp is likely to complain about his track being followed by Aretha Franklin. And I know that Kenny G. has his detractors, but in limited doses, I never have a problem with him. The instrumental take on "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" mixes a little light jazz among the soul and the standards. And it's all rounded out nicely with soundtrack selections composed for the film (I assume--never actually saw the movie) by Bruce Broughton, which are very well done. The closer is a pleasant surprise from Sarah McLaughlin. "Song For A Winter's Night," while not really a Christmas carol is appropriately seasonable and quite haunting. The double tracking of her vocal adds a dimension to her somewhat mannered style that I hadn't heard before.

So maybe I'll break down, get that CD player installed in my car, and bring this CD along when I head for Maine again over Christmas. It'll offer more variety than most radio stations--and no commercials. How can I lose?

      5 out of 5 stars Festive Variety.......1998-12-04

This is a wonderful variety of holiday music. If you have ever seen the movie, it will bring back fun memories. This CD is great for parties and other holiday gatherings. After all, it has everyone from Natalie Cole to Kenny G to Elvis! Sure to put even the toughest Scrooge out there in the Christmas spirit!

Together with his saxophonist brother, Michael, trumpeter Randy Brecker was one of the forefathers of funk-fusion. With honorary other brother, David Sanborn, they combined be-bop technique, James Brown-rhythms, and rock & roll energy into an amalgam that would be a blueprint for a generation to come. For his previous outing, Hanging in the City, Randy Brecker adopted an alter ego--Randroid--in an attempt to inject hip-hop elements into his urban music-scape. For this recording, he returns to the more exciting, frenetic funk that he helped originate, restricting his trendiness to largely-programmed beats. Fortunately, George Whitty and Zach Danziger provide truly organic sounding grooves redolent of some of Jazzanova's best work. The title tune opens the set with baritone player Ronnie Cuber working out in the best Tower of Power tradition. Throughout, he and famed JB Fred Wesley add plenty of grease to the proceedings. There is no need for Randy Brecker to worry about his street cred; he and his brother defined urban music with records like this, providing the raw materials for the hip-hoppers to sample. --Michael Ross

5 out of 5 stars Problem: create a kick-..., cliche-free urban jazz disc.......2003-08-19

Not an easy task: witness the musicscape littered with myriad failures.

Who better than the Brecker Bros. to do it? No one, especially when they're in one of their jazzier configurations, with stalwarts such as Ronnie Cuber (bari sax), Adam Rogers (guitar), Chris Mihn Doky (bass), and Clarence Penn (drums).

The challenge in an outing like this is to maintain a genuine urban sensibility in the midst of a true jazz esthetic. Credit the Bros. with doing just that. It probably helps that each has been scouting his own peculiar trails, Michael, progressive straight-ahead jazz, Randy, more groove-oriented citified musics. Put them together, retaining the best of each, and you've got quite a disc: accessible without being cloying; jazzy without being esoteric.

With the Yellowjackets' Time Squared, Charlie Hunter's Right Now Move, Metalwood's latest, and John Scofield's Up All Night, this represents some kind of renaissance of jazz fusion. I, for one, am not complaining.

      5 out of 5 stars Problem: Evoke a kick-butt, cliche-free urban-jazz vibe.......2003-08-19

Not an easy task, esp. since the musical landscape is littered with myriad failed efforts.

The key is to get muscular, groove-oriented, melodic, funky, and original all at once. Who better for the job than the Brecker Bros., a decade removed from their glory days and having survived both straigh-ahead wars (Michael) and urban trivialization (Randy)?

Though billed as Randy's gig, the first reviewer is right in considering this a Brecker Bros. release.

And quite a release it is. What makes this disc stand out is the incredible roster of hardcore jazzers, from Ronnie Cuber to Chris Mihn Doky to Adam Rogers to Clarence Penn. Yes, David Sanborn's on board as George Whitty but there's a deeper, clearer authentic jazz sensibility operating here than on any other Brecker Bros. record.

And for that we should rejoice. It's like we're getting the best of both worlds--those impossibly tight BB grooves with an uncompromising jazz authenticity.

What more could you ask for?

4 out of 5 stars ATTN: Brecker Brothers Band fans!.......2003-05-19

If you are a fan of ther Brecker Brothers Band-- as I am-- I think you'll really enjoy this CD. Even though this is ostensibly a Randy Brecker "solo" album, it sounds more like a "Brecker Brothers" release than a Randy or Michael Brecker individual release. Which is to say that the music is a wee bit more "mainstream" or commercially accessible than a Randy/Michael solo album. It's still a big dose of hard-charging BB funk-bop (or is it bop-funk?), and will probably be as close as we get to a BB album anytime soon.

It's especially in the "Brecker Brothers" vein because it includes David Sanborn on alto sax (not to mention Ronnie Cuber on bari sax and Fred Wesley[!] on 'bone). It also includes long-time BB associate George Witty on keyboards, as well as fusion guitar wunderkind Adam Rogers and outstanding Danish electric/acoustic bassist Chris Minh Doky.

Anyway, it's great and you'll dig it. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because it has too many programmed drum parts and not enough "real" acoustic drumming (by the fantastic Clarence Penn, no less). As a drummer myself, I'd prefer the latter. But don't let that stop you from enjoying the album.
