Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Overall, this is NOT a bad cd. But, was not perfect either. I think the "Lovemakers" are a great band, there were just a few songs on "Time of Romance" that I usually skip over. However, I do look forward to hearing more from them soon.
More than just 80s-style synthpop!.......2006-01-30

Memories of Films from Musical Themes .......2005-11-24
Works included are by Charlie Chaplin ("Smile"), Nino Rota, Takemitsu, Shostakovich, Milhaud, Piazzola, Dunayevsky, and Giya Kancheli. The arrangements are well written and the performances honor this genre of music with the same degree of dignity offered the 'serious' works of these composers. It is a bit of lightness but a not fluff and the beautiful playing by Kremer is well worth the listening. Grady Harp, November 05

Frank Patterson is an Irish tenor in the grand tradition of John McCormack and Josef Locke. God Bless America! is a live recording of a concert he performed in tribute to his adopted country. The songs range from traditional Irish tunes like "The Star of the County Down" and "The Spinning Wheel" to sentimental music-hall ballads like "Mother Machree" and "The Rose of Tralee." He also sings the inevitable "O Solo Mio" (is there a tenor born who can resist it?) and Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Music of the Night." Patterson is joined on a number of tunes by his wife, Eily O'Grady, and her Irish Harp Orchestra. Patterson is an unabashedly emotional singer who wrings the last teardrop out of chestnuts like "Danny Boy," but he does it in such a charming manner that his performances never descend into kitsch. --Michael SimmonsCustomer Reviews:

"Love and Happiness through the power of song".......2000-03-26
This album - "God Bless America - An Irish Salute", is one of the most touching compilations of music ever recorded. One of the highlights is his wife Eily O'Grady and her Irish Harp Orchestra, simply an emotional pair of people enjoying what they do best, spreading love and happiness through the power of song.

Album Description
The music of this album celebrates the most native of our musical experiences with lullabies from many lands and languages - from Appalachia, from the north of England, from Wales, Norway, Sicily, the Basque lands, and Korea - with the beauty of the treble voice drawing these distant lands and cultures together. In Western heritage, the greatest outpouring of lullaby music comes from images of Mary and the baby Jesus.Yet this is not essentially a Christmas album, nor a sacred album, though such themes keep reappearing, but rather an experience of rocking, soothing music. Sung only by boys' voices and accompanied by a few instruments, (piano, recorder, cello and violin)each sung lullaby - or group of lullabies - is complemented by an unsung 'cradle song,' short little piano interludes, taking the listener from one lullaby to the next as in a dream.
The CD should not be limited in its appeal to only mothers and their babies and younger children, but to all those in search of restorative music "for the quiet times."

Beautiful music for everyone.......2002-09-20
From true classical "nuts" who want every inflection of an artist's performance to be spot on -to- your friend who never wants to listen to anything classical.
It is an album which can be "paid attention to" and which will yeild invaluable returns in terms of Nathaniel and Doris' artistic abilities. It can also be "ignored" and one will simply be lost in a beautiful "wash" of sounds.
Everyone should own a copy for those quiet moments shared with your most intimate friend, simply relax and let the worries of the day dissipate into the atmosphere.

Jazz at its most romantic.......2004-04-19
The old standards from the Great American Songbook were an early influence on Kelly and it was after she started singing these songs again that she finally recorded an album of her own that got a release in 1998. Simply titled American songs, it was made up of five songs from the pop/rock era and six from the Great American Songbook. There is only one pop/rock song on this follow-up album - The look of love, a Burt Bacharach- Hal David song that I always associate with Dusty Springfield, but which has been recorded by countless others including Diana Krall.
Elsewhere on this album, you can hear Kelly's excellent versions of such classics as Comes love, You stepped out of a dream, Lover come back to me, Gone with the wind, Come rain or come shine and many others.
Kelly is clearly a singer of the highest quality who has now found a way to get her music heard around the world. This romantic album is in the best traditions of Jeri Southern, Julie London, Peggy Lee and others from their era. Fans of those fine ladies - and fans of Diana Krall - should give this album a listen.
After-Hours Jazz Vocal.......2003-11-03
Just when your jazz vocal collection is brimming with a lot of obvious singers, try and get a hold of Kelly Harland. She may not be the love of your life, but she will make you remember the beauty of having your own love of your life.
