5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2007-03-11

I saw this band perform at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, and their album is as great as their performance. I love "Prepare for the Fight" and "Dance".

4 out of 5 stars 80's pop meets the new millenium!.......2006-07-05

Remember Human League? How about Duran Duran? If you do, then The Lovemakers "Times of Romance" is right up your alley. It's a combo of the two groups, in my opinion, plus a number of other 80's pop bands, and this is, again in my opinion, GOOD. They're poppy, they're light, they're all retro-80's. Great for a summer day while you're jammin' in the car...even though your life won't be changed by the lyrics... but who cares? It's The Lovemakers! Buy it used, I suggest. A great little summer treat.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-06-05

Great 80's sounding pop, but with a lot of 2006 uniqueness. I love it!

3 out of 5 stars The Lovemakers definitely have some hits up their sleeves........2006-05-08

The Lovemakers offer a variety of techno, electronica and some indie on "Times of Romance". You will probably enjoy this CD if you are a fan of other groups such as Depeche Mode, Ladytron, and Moving Units. I think the high points of the cd were songs such as "Is It Alright", "Set Me Free", and "Runaway".

I rated the songs on the album on a scale of 1 to 5.

Prepare For The Fight - 3/5
Is It Alright? - 4/5
Dance - 2/5
Shake That Ass - 2/5 (Very disco)
Set Me Free - 5/5 (reminiscent that late 80s new wave)
Falling Apart - 4/5
Gonna Find - 3/5
Times of Romance - 3/5
We Should be Taking Our Clothes Off - 3/5
Hypnotised - 3/5
Runaway - 5/5 (My Favorite. Very reminiscent of Cyndi Lauper and Blondie.)
Fashion - 2/5
Prepare For The Fight/Remix - 3/5

Overall, this is NOT a bad cd. But, was not perfect either. I think the "Lovemakers" are a great band, there were just a few songs on "Time of Romance" that I usually skip over. However, I do look forward to hearing more from them soon.

5 out of 5 stars More than just 80s-style synthpop!.......2006-01-30

The Lovemakers play great songs with melodic hooks, and are of course fun to dance to. While their sound is somewhat like the B-52s and the Go-Gos, their songs are racier, relying on the underlying dark tension between vocalists Light and Blonde (ironically, the group has achieved success only after they broke up). Prepare for the Fight, Shake That Ass, Falling Apart, Runaway, Fashion--these tunes are catchy, yet different enough to keep the album from bogging down. Light and Blonde are a bit kitschy, but they know how to coo, too. Not a bad cut in the bunch. I hope they make it big and AllMusic finally puts up their bio!

4 out of 5 stars Memories of Films from Musical Themes .......2005-11-24

Gidon Kremer released this delicious little CD in 1999 and it has more or less gone unnoticed since then. This is not a 'soundtrack favorites' jumble but a serious approach to some beautiful melodies as interpreted by Kremer and pianist Oleg Maisenberg, with the added presence of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra conducted by the gifted Andrey Boreyko.

Works included are by Charlie Chaplin ("Smile"), Nino Rota, Takemitsu, Shostakovich, Milhaud, Piazzola, Dunayevsky, and Giya Kancheli. The arrangements are well written and the performances honor this genre of music with the same degree of dignity offered the 'serious' works of these composers. It is a bit of lightness but a not fluff and the beautiful playing by Kremer is well worth the listening. Grady Harp, November 05

Frank Patterson is an Irish tenor in the grand tradition of John McCormack and Josef Locke. God Bless America! is a live recording of a concert he performed in tribute to his adopted country. The songs range from traditional Irish tunes like "The Star of the County Down" and "The Spinning Wheel" to sentimental music-hall ballads like "Mother Machree" and "The Rose of Tralee." He also sings the inevitable "O Solo Mio" (is there a tenor born who can resist it?) and Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Music of the Night." Patterson is joined on a number of tunes by his wife, Eily O'Grady, and her Irish Harp Orchestra. Patterson is an unabashedly emotional singer who wrings the last teardrop out of chestnuts like "Danny Boy," but he does it in such a charming manner that his performances never descend into kitsch. --Michael Simmons

Frank Patterson does his best singing when he simply sings the familiar songs with heartfelt passion. He does nothing fancy and ends up with a superior product. Well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars "Love and Happiness through the power of song".......2000-03-26

Irish tenor Frank Patterson was born and raised in Tipperary, performing at an early age with the Wren Boys. Patterson's early works were primarily classical, but with the increasingly popularity of celtic music, Frank turned his energies toward his homeland traditional folk ballads. PBS special "Ireland in Song" was a tremendous hit, giving him more exposure than ever to the world with his "God" given talent.

This album - "God Bless America - An Irish Salute", is one of the most touching compilations of music ever recorded. One of the highlights is his wife Eily O'Grady and her Irish Harp Orchestra, simply an emotional pair of people enjoying what they do best, spreading love and happiness through the power of song.

5 out of 5 stars Saw the PBS Special.......2000-03-22

I do not have the album but saw the PBS special last Saturday night and have been looking for the cd and will buy it. The song My Son is the most moving and beautiful I have ever heard. Having three sons, I felt it related to each of them and it can be for either mother or father. The rest of the songs were superb. Mr Patterson is a warm and wonderful human being and has a great voice. His son played the violin when he sang My Son, by the way. Also, his wife's group of harpists are wonderful. All in all, a great group of songs show and I am sure a great cd. I also want the tape when it is available.

Sorry, I have not heard this album, but the song "MY SON" was suggested for a Mother/Son dance at his wedding. I would surely love to see the words first, before I purchase the album.. Thank you for any help you may have.

      Album Description

The music of this album celebrates the most native of our musical experiences with lullabies from many lands and languages - from Appalachia, from the north of England, from Wales, Norway, Sicily, the Basque lands, and Korea - with the beauty of the treble voice drawing these distant lands and cultures together. In Western heritage, the greatest outpouring of lullaby music comes from images of Mary and the baby Jesus.

Yet this is not essentially a Christmas album, nor a sacred album, though such themes keep reappearing, but rather an experience of rocking, soothing music. Sung only by boys' voices and accompanied by a few instruments, (piano, recorder, cello and violin)each sung lullaby - or group of lullabies - is complemented by an unsung 'cradle song,' short little piano interludes, taking the listener from one lullaby to the next as in a dream.

The CD should not be limited in its appeal to only mothers and their babies and younger children, but to all those in search of restorative music "for the quiet times."

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music for everyone.......2002-09-20

As my title to this review implies; everyone will love this cd.
From true classical "nuts" who want every inflection of an artist's performance to be spot on -to- your friend who never wants to listen to anything classical.

It is an album which can be "paid attention to" and which will yeild invaluable returns in terms of Nathaniel and Doris' artistic abilities. It can also be "ignored" and one will simply be lost in a beautiful "wash" of sounds.

Everyone should own a copy for those quiet moments shared with your most intimate friend, simply relax and let the worries of the day dissipate into the atmosphere.

5 out of 5 stars No Rough Edges.......2000-11-05

As the name implies, this recording is definately for quiet times. It is unintrusive and therefore quite relaxing! It exposes Mr. Rosen's deeply beautiful and completely polished tone. It's easy on the ears, just as intended.

5 out of 5 stars Reverie, Nathaniel Rosen, Cello.......2000-01-06

This is a beautiful collection of pieces for cello piano. Mr. Rosen has complete command of the cello and and his playing is marked by wonderful tone and phrasing. He is truly a master of his craft. He is an artist of the highest rank. The final piece on this recording is especially meaningful when you consider that the Soprano, Kaaren Erickson, is heard for the last time before her tragic death. This is a CD that you will keep coming back to!

5 out of 5 stars Jazz at its most romantic.......2004-04-19

Kelly has had a long and varied career in music, working in pop, rock and jazz at various times. She has been session singer, jingles singer, member of rock band Lazy Racer and at one time got a recording deal with Epic records thanks to Charlie Daniels (the country rocker famous for Devil went down to Georgia) but the record company got into difficulties and Kelly was dropped when her album was nearing completion. Kelly has also tried songwriting and had some success - she co-wrote True love, the title track to one of Crystal Gayle's albums in the eighties. This song is, of course, very different from the more famous song of that title first recorded by Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly.

The old standards from the Great American Songbook were an early influence on Kelly and it was after she started singing these songs again that she finally recorded an album of her own that got a release in 1998. Simply titled American songs, it was made up of five songs from the pop/rock era and six from the Great American Songbook. There is only one pop/rock song on this follow-up album - The look of love, a Burt Bacharach- Hal David song that I always associate with Dusty Springfield, but which has been recorded by countless others including Diana Krall.

Elsewhere on this album, you can hear Kelly's excellent versions of such classics as Comes love, You stepped out of a dream, Lover come back to me, Gone with the wind, Come rain or come shine and many others.

Kelly is clearly a singer of the highest quality who has now found a way to get her music heard around the world. This romantic album is in the best traditions of Jeri Southern, Julie London, Peggy Lee and others from their era. Fans of those fine ladies - and fans of Diana Krall - should give this album a listen.

        4 out of 5 stars After-Hours Jazz Vocal.......2003-11-03

Kelly Harland is probably a jazz singer most people do not know. Which is a pity because she has this gift of bringing to life the after-hours feeling of jazz. Its like relaxing in your favorite dive or sipping your dry martini. Her voice is like a cozy reminder of a happy relationship. There is something down-home in her delivery, and she improvises and swings like no one.

Just when your jazz vocal collection is brimming with a lot of obvious singers, try and get a hold of Kelly Harland. She may not be the love of your life, but she will make you remember the beauty of having your own love of your life.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding selection of Benjamin Frankel film music..........2002-03-06

This CD is fine qualty DDD recording with spacious, detailed sound. It has excellent presentation and booklet, with a very nice choice of film stills. I particularly enjoyed the 'Importance of Being Earnest' and 'Trottie True' tracks, both with those jaunty lively themes at which Benjamin Frankel excels. 'Curse of the Werewolf' is an amazing quality score for such a low budget film, bearing in mind Hammer usually only budgeted for £85-100,000 per film in the early 1960s ! With a much bigger MGM budget and major stars, the 'Night of the Iguana' score is a revelation, as I have never heard it before - I only hope the film is on TV again soon so I can study the context of the music. The sombre moments reminds me at times of Mahler and the music in 'Death in Venice', and the 'Hannah and Shannon' theme is superb. I liked the use of the muted trumpet,(as in Miles Davis ' Sketches of Spain' ?) to suggest Mexican atmosphere. The 'Trottie True' suite is lovely: 'Gaiety Gallop' deserves to be a light music classic along with Benjamin Frankel's 'Carriage and Pair', capturing the Edwardian world of Sir Arthur Sullivan beautifully, and the haunting 'Balloon Toon' is already becoming one of my favourites. There are wonderful reconstructions for the 'Lullaby' from 'The Years Between', and 'Footsteps in the Fog'.... In the latter, apart from the lush, haunting 'Lily Watkins Theme', the use of the piano in 'Lowry's Secret' is particularly eerie....
