ELP has come and gone (twice), while Genesis is but a fading memory. Yet Yes improbably soldiers on, as much enduring artistic/philosophical state of mind as stubborn prog rock holdout. This three disc, multiple band lineup spanning collection of (mostly) previously unreleased live performances pays apt tribute to that proud, expansive mindset. While it skips almost entirely over the band's mid-‘70s prime (a period already amply chronicled on the double-disc Yessongs), the band's formative era and first line-ups get showcased on raw ‘70-'71 performances from the BBC and Swedish Radio (the latter pair capturing some of guitarist Steve Howe's first performances with the band) on disc one, a chapter highlighted by their sprawling, if still evolving version of Paul Simon's "America"and a rare, nearly as grandiose cover of The Rascals' obscure "It's Love,"both from London '71.

Disc two focuses on arena performances from the late ‘70s, featuring an ambitious "Sound Chaser"from the Patrick Moraz line-up, as well as a "Big Medley"of reworked versions of some of their defining songs, with Rick Wakeman back behind the keys. The final chapter is the set's most varied, chronicling not one, but two band revampings via a trio of live tracks from the short-lived tenure of former Buggles Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes and a quartet of performances from the band's surprisingly successful, Trevor Rabin -sparked ‘80s pop reincarnation, including the rarities "Rhythm of Love" and "Shoot High, Aim Low." If the overall sound quality varies considerably, spanning mono radio recordings of indeterminate generation to soundboard cassettes from Howe's collection and professional multi-track (most of disc 2), it's the ever-forceful, often ambitiously reinventive performances they capture that's more the point. The set's ample booklet reinforces the notion that it's a collection aimed squarely a longtime fans, more than a few of whom contribute their insightful reminisces within. -- Jerry McCulley

2 out of 5 stars And the word is....money.......2007-02-24

Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of Yes (See my other reviews) but with this release, they have gone too far on abusing fans.(Maybe the producer, not the band) It is a bootleg, the worst sound you can imagine.
And the material is poor, do we really need other version of Yours is no Disgrace, I've seen all good people, Siberian Khatru, Roundabout or Awaken ? We already have high quality of theses on Keys to Ascension Vol 1 and Vol 2. I don't want to hear songs from the Drama tour...
Be aware that this is really nothing more than a bootleg with some bad songs and be aware that the only good tracks can be founded elsewhere with a real hi-fi sound, no a poor quality one.

5 out of 5 stars The Word id Live - Yes CD.......2007-01-12

I bought this CD for my brohter who told me this collection of Yes music is great. It is Yes at thier best.

5 out of 5 stars yes por siempre.......2006-09-10

long live rock&roll, long live YES. YES Forever.

    4 out of 5 stars It's a must.......2006-07-08

Don't let a single critic persuade you not to buy this collection. I just bought the CD and as a Yes fan for 25 years, it is awesome. Hidden is the big medley which includes Time and a Word, Long Distance Runaround, Survival, The Fish, Perpetual Change and Soon. All tracks are great. Great Yes stories from fans and famous musicians in the booklet. If Yes moves your soul in the respect that you can't breath during certain songs, such as "Soon" or "America" do yourself a favor and buy this collection.

4 out of 5 stars compelling musobiography of best band ever.......2006-02-05

This set is great to track the evolution of the best band in the history of rock from near the beginning to near the present, but it is certainly not the best introduction for neophytes who want be absolutely blown away by their brilliance . . . the live set to do that would be _Yessongs_. It's nice to listen to the whole three-CD set from front to end and think about all the incredible changes they went through.

The first disc documenting early Yes is of almost universally poor sound quality, but these are good "musobiographical" documents, if you will, taking us to the time before Yes were selling out arenas around the world. The jamming on "America" is absolutely brilliant, a sad reminder of what could have been if Bruford would have stayed with them through it all, nonetheless preparing us for the bliss to come on disc two.

The sound quality is much better as Yes is much more of a world phenomenon between 1976-1979, the time span covered on this disc. Highlights include "Sound Chaser" and "Soon" from their stellar _Relayer_, giving us a chance to hear Patrick Moraz torture the keyboards Jan Hammer-style in a live setting. "Soon" rounds out the absolutely stunning "Big Medley," which never ceases to amaze as it weaving one song into the other in ways that seem to defy composition. The songs from Oakland 1978, "Future Times/Rejoice" and "Circus of Heaven," sound better than the studio versions, proving that the albums from the pre-_Drama_ era were ruined by poor studio-craft, not Yes's lack of cohesion. Another highlight here is the rocking rendition they do of their early gem "Sweet Dreams." Chris Squire amps up the bass as he goes from shaking your gut to teasing the ozone of thought as he finger-picks sixty-fourth note hammer-ons and pull-offs in stunning improvisational splendor and physical derring-do.

Disc three is also a treat, especially the material from _Drama_, which I believe is Yes's most underrated album. "Tempus Fugit" grabs you by the lapels when performed live, making me think of the infinite possibilities of music that is open to the other as a punk aesthetic is blended with Yes's technological and technical ethic. Two pieces that did not make it onto _Drama_ are also here, both of them very fun. Trevor Horn has a good presence live, too; his place in Yes history cannot be underestimated, as this disc shows. He was just as important to Yes as Eddie Offord was in the early '70s, with the difference that Trevor led the band for a brief moment in time, right before video killed the radio star. How many people even realize that the lead singer of Yes went on to be the lead singer of the band that debuted MTV? Yes helped to load video's gun as it killed the radio star.

Disc two is the highlight here, as disc three tapers off a little in excitement factor (for this listener) when it hits Trevor Rabin-era Yes. I would have chosen "Big Generator" if I was to include anything from that worst of Yes album's: "Shoot High, Aim Low" makes me want to sleep the way they play it live (and in the studio). Thankfully, they end the set on a triumphant note with that most thrilling of Rabin-era songs "Owner of a Lonely Heart." They could've replaced the _Big Generator_ song with something else good from _90125_, like "Our Song" or something and this set would've been closer to a five. Still, it's an honest and real look at every place that Yes went, showing them at their peak for close to a couple decades, with only a few minor valleys to dot the majestically towering landscape, hammering it into the listener that there is no precedent for a band with this degree of brilliance and longevity in the history of rock.

Gilbert And Sullivan. Eternal names in the musical theatre scene. They were the 19th century British version of Rodgers and Hammerstein or Lerner and Loewe. And this was long before Broadway, when the Savoy was the vogue of musical comedy and the Savoyards were highly popular entertainers. William S. Gilbert provided the libretti and lyrics to the operettas, while Arthur Sullivan, who was a serious music composer in his own right, provided the music. The operettas or light operas they wrote were mostly up-beat social satires dressed up as comedy, very theatrical, historical, inventive, and very patriotic to Brittain. Their works borrowed the opera technique- choruses, arias, ensembles, but as far as plot and content their only serious work was The Yeomen Of The Guard. Other Gilbert And Sullivan hits include Trial By Jury, H.M.S. Pinafore, The Mikado, Princess Ida and The Gondoliers. Gilbert And Sullivan's manager/impresario was Richard D'Oyly Carte.

This recording is only highlights from a 1968 recording (also available on Amazon.com) with the D'Oyly Carte Opera, conductor Isidore Godfrey directs the Royal Philharmonic. In the role of Frederick, lyric tenor Phillip Potter, in the role of Mabel, soprano Valerie Masterson, John Reed as Major General Stanley, Donald Adams as The Pirate King,Owen Brannigan as the Sergeant Of Police, and mezzo soprano Christine Palmer as Nurse Ruth. These singers were at their vocal peaks, and they provide much comedic acting as well. Impressive scenes include the mezzo soprano vocals of Christine Palmer's Ruth as she describes how she mistook "Pilot" for "Pirate" when nursing Frederick (When Frederick Was A Little Lad"), Frederick's plea to the daughters of the Major General to accept him as husband (O Is There Not One Maiden Breast) Valerie Masterson, whose Mabel is the best, singing the coloratura showcase "Poor Wondering One" and her duet in "Stay Frederick Stay" John Reed singing "I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Major General" is hilarious and a display of virtuosity for this type of singing. The beautiful chorus "O Dry The Glistening Tear" the upbeat "With Cat Like Tread" and the finale are exceptional.

5 out of 5 stars Excerpts And Highlights From The Pirates Of Penzance.......2004-02-04

This cd contains only highlights and excerpts from the 1968 recording by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. For a full recording, check it out on the Amazon.com catalog under Gilbert and Sullivan Pirates Of Penzance D'Oyl Carte Opera. This company was founded by the original impresario and manager of the Gilbert and Sullivan productions in the late 19th century, Richard D'Oyly Carte. Arthur Sullivan, who was a well-known composer, provided the music and William Gilbert wrote the libretti. Their partnership was a match made in heaven, as evident in the success of their many operettas, beginning with the smash hit "Trial By Jury" and even on to the more serious opera "The Yeomen Of The Guard". Nevertheless, Gilbert and Sullivan had different temperaments and did'nt always get along very well. They split up sometime in the 1890's. Other famous light operas of theirs include The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Mikado, Iolanthe, Princess Ida and The Gondoliers. Light opera or operetta was the vogue of the day, especially popular in the Savoy Theatre in London. Although it was not opera, it borrowed much of the opera techniques- namely arias and chorus. The entertainment of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas were very much like Broadway musicals. In fact, one could make the argument that the Savoy was the Broadway long before American Broadway theatre and Gilbert and Sullivan were like an early British form of Rodgers and Hammersteins or Lerner and Loewe.

The Pirate Of Penzance is a beautiful work of art. The sugary and sentimental story is about the exoneration of pirates, who are noble men who have "gone astray" by such authorities as the Major General, his daughters and the Sergeant of Police. Through the course of the opera, Frederick, who was nursed by Ruth and reared by the Pirate King and his roguish band of pirates. When the daughters of Major General Stanley reject his proposals of love, only Mabel consents to love him. But there's a catch. Frederick is in the hands of the pirates until he comes of age but he was born on a leap year and not until 1940 will he be released. The ending is happy and finds the pirates forgivened by the authorities and Mabel and Frederick are happily married.

The singers really deliver a great performance. In the role of the Major General Stanley is John Reed, who by the time of this recording was a veteran singer in the company. He comes off as fatherly, authoritive but cheerful. An especially skilled type of singer is needed for the master song "I am the Very Model Of A Modern Major General". In contrast, a lyric tenderness is required in the final song "Sighing Softly To The River". As mentioned, a lot of this light opera shines with chorus. The excellent choruses include the opening chorus "Pour The Pirate Sherry", "Oh Dry The Glistening Tear"- this one in particular is set to beautiful music and the daughters of the Major General sound heavenly when they sing in chorus, expressive also in their chorus when Frederick sings "O, Is There Not One Maiden Breast ?". Frederick is sung by Phillip Potter, whose tenor voice is lyric and romantic, and it sounds gorgeous when in duet with Valerie Masterson's Mabel, as in the duet that follows "Stay Frederick Stay". Valerie Masterson was the principal soprano of the company and performed in various other lead roles such as Princess Yum-Yum in The Mikado. A well-schooled lyric and coloratura diva, Valerie Masterson extended her repertoire into Broadway and opera- she has sung Violetta Valery of Verdi's La Traviata (in both Italian and in English versions), Adele in Die Fledermaus and even a part in an English version of Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung. Valerie has recordings out in stock and available in Amazon.com.

5 out of 5 stars Pirates Of Penzance Highlights At A Cheap Price !!.......2003-12-27

For a very reasonable, inexpensive price (around 8 dollars) this cd is a must have for those who have recently taken up an interest in Gilbert and Sullivan. Gilbert and Sullivan were a team of composer and librettist, both Englishmen, from the late 19th century who composed operettas written in the English language and in the spirit of popular folk song of the Victorian period (roughly 1870's, 1880's and 1890's ) The light operas were equally as light in plot and mood- they were cheery, uncomplicated stories, a lot of them set on a naval vessel out at sea. They poked fun at the Victorian way of life, in much the same vein that Offenbach satirized the French of his day during the Second Empire (1860's). Gilbert and Sullivan composed many operettas that still remain popular today, especially The Mikado, The H.M.S. Pinafore and in this case The Pirates Of Penzance. The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company specialized exclusively in the art of Gilbert and Sullivan and have long been regarded as the finest interpreters of the style. In the 50's and 60's they performed live and made a variety of recordings, employing the talents of many outstanding English singers- among them lyric soprano Valerie Masterson.

In The Pirates Of Penzance, Mabel and Frederick are temporarily seperated lovers when Frederick is accused of a crime he did not commit. The plot involves pirates, among them the bass-baritone Pirate King. Light-hearted, bouncy tunes abound in what is considered the direct ancestor to Broadway musicals. The Overture makes use of the chorus "With Cat Like Tread" a march-like, jovial piece of music. The Highlights on this cd include "Pour O Pour The Pirate Sherry", "When Frederick Was A Lad", " Poor Wondering One", "I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Major General" and the uplifting finale. Valerie Masterson plays the role of Mabel. Her voice is fresh, agile, lyric and she has excellent command of coloratura when warranted, as she sings in "Poor Wondering One". This 1968 recording is in its entirety on the same label with the same singers on a different cd recording.

    4 out of 5 stars A reasonably good abridgement to this ever-popular G&S opera.......2001-03-08

This budget-priced abridgement of D'Oyly Carte's incomporable 1968 PIRATES is a reasonably good way for beginners to get started on the opera itself. The D'Oyly Carte's performance is top-notch and beyond reproach and Isidore Godfrey elicits delicate playing from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The 62-minute playing time gives exceptionl value for money, even though there are scenes I feel should hae been omitted such as Frederic's "Oh is there not one maiden breast" that hold up the action. It would have been ince to include the Act One finale because it reveals what is to come in the second act. To round off, some people think that this performance of PIRATES is far too operatic, but this is Sullivan's original arrangement and not others' work.

    4 out of 5 stars Judge Yourself.......2006-07-04

The CD is good. It switches from live performances to tracks accompanied by 'mood' music. Personally, I prefer the live or acapella tracks because Acey often speaks with a high level of energy. That energy coupled with intellectually stimulating speech makes for good work with every release. My favorites on this particular CD; Market 4 Niggas & Picture This (Orig.)

    5 out of 5 stars A Comic-Opera Treasure!.......2007-01-28

Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!

5 out of 5 stars an obscure delight!.......2002-07-31

Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.

        Album Description

Musical humorist, serious vocalist, Kacey Jones, deftly mixes clever commentary with flat-out great sound on this, her first-ever, LIVE solo CD. Recorded before a sold-out crowd at the legendary Bluebird Cafe' in Nashville, here's what co-producer and engineer, Vaughn Skow, has to say: "I've recorded many LIVE albums, but never one like this. No words can adequately describe the manner in which Kacey dominated the room that night. It was truly electric and proves, once again, that a great entertainer needs no more than an acoustic guitar and a microphone to produce magic." Four bonus studio tracks round out this fabulous FUN-filled evening with Miss Jones.

This is possibly the funniest CD released in the 1990s. It shows Harvey at his peak as a performer and personality. His recreation of the wig scene from "Valley of the Dolls" is worth the cost of the disc alone. Search for this one, it's worth it!

Recorded live at venues from Pensacola, FL to Vancouver, BC; from Santa Cruz, CA to Philadelphia, PA -- Chandler and Feeney's magical musical pairing brings hilarious clarity to today's headlines. Feeney's traditional guitar stylings and powerful vocals nuance Chandler's observations both whimsical and satirical.
