Those who at one time toyed with the idea of becoming Tori Amos fans but ultimately rejected the idea (face facts: her music can be alienating) will want to throw out a life raft for Charlotte Martin who, with On Your Shore, manages to send Amos-like shivers up the spine without overblowing the oddball, quirky, I'm-so-complex stuff. The vibe throughout these 13 songs is pure Amos--piano-driven, dark, theatrical, sweepingly orchestral--but doses of Kate Bush-style button-pushing and Cure-modeled insouciance bump up the interest level. So does the songwriting. "You can't judge the love by the lover/The sky by its thunder," goes the opening verse of "Beautiful Life," and similarly contemplative concepts course through songs like the first single "Every Time It Rains," also a lyrical stunner. The sole cover here, a tender take on the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" presented as a bonus track, swats away doubts that Martin is a pour-it-on performer. Best of all is how this CD bodes for female singer/songwriters to come. Instead of dumbing down the songs and playing the pop tart or, worse, drowning us in a mellowness that makes us search for our own pulse, Martin's music probes the girl within. Brilliant!!.......2007-07-20

I actually heard a song by Charlotte on "So you think you can dance" and thought, wow, who is that?!?! I ran to the computer and ordered her cd Veins. EVERY song is great, so I ordered Stromata. Every song kicked butt!! So I ordered On your shore. Wow!!! I too am a huge Tori fan, but I wouldn't call Charlotte a knock off, why can't there be more than one piano playing chick? Gives us more to listen to and enjoy! Charlotte is extraordinary, touching, and angelic. Run fast, and get her cd's today!!

Love the music but will never buy this CD. The few cd's i've had that were copy protected i've still copied. It was a pain though so i just don't buy them anymore.

Outstanding yet Underrated--but doesn't it always seem to happen that way?.......2007-06-13

Even though this album is a little hard to find new, I encourage you to buy it used here at Amazon. It is an incredible album, filled with emotion-packed songwriting and impressive delivery. Charlotte is a classically trained opera singer, and her vocal ability is one of her best attributes. This is showcased in songs like "On Your Shore" and "Every Time It Rains." Comparisons to Tori Amos are inevitable, especially with songs like "Steel" which seem in terms of piano structure very influenced by Tori. But I do not believe the comparisons are a bad thing, because the music is reminiscent of Tori rather than a copycat version. Charlotte loves layering vocals, and that is a constant theme throughout the album, especially in "Something Like a Hero"--this is one of On Your Shore's definintive tracks that will give you goosebumps by the end of it. The production value of this album is incredible. Many people were involved in the recording and producing of this album, but it was mainly produced by Charlotte and her husband Ken Andrews.



This is an incredible album that did not receive the promotion it deserved from RCA Records. Had they pushed "Every Time It Rains" as a single and officially released "Limits of Our Love" as the second single which they planned, she would have gained more exposure in the mainstream world. But she is doing great on her own now as an independent artist, and I encourage you to check out her second album "Stromata" as well, which was released on her own record label Dinosaur Fight in 2006.

not a bad little cd. Nowadays getting an album with at least 3 good songs on it is a score. she is like a more rock based tori amos, but not a knock off. Individual and unique. Not an amazing ALBUM , but has some great songs on it. DO IT!

I never needed light to see you.......2007-02-03

Charlotte Martin is an artist that demands attention. Just when you think you can pigeonhole her into one type of music she releases something wildly unexpected. Her voice can acclimate to any kind of music, which she proves throughout On Your Shore (and all of her other releases for that matter). Her piano ballads have the ability to induce tears and her more in your face songs definitely raise eyebrows. If you've yet to hear any of Char's music, expect to be wowed.

Charlotte Martin has so many things going for her it's not even fair to other artists. Her voice is incredible, her lyrics are intensely relateable, her piano skills are excellent, and the band that acompanies her is equally great. Mix all those together and you're gonna have one heck of a CD. However, On Your Shore is entirely different from other releases. Each CD has it's own overall 'feel' and On Your Shore is no different. On Your Shore is focused more on the piano than, say, Stromata, but not as much as In Parentheses. She's got the resources this time around and she uses them to amazing effect.

On Your Shore has a little bit for everyone. If you're up for some ballads look no further than Your Armor, Steel, Sweet Chariot, and even Beautiful Life. If you'd rather hear some mid-temp songs On Your Shore, Limits Of Our Love, Up All Night, and Something Like A Hero are all up your alley. And then, for those of you who want to see how well Char's voice sounds whilst backing a driving beat, look no further than the awe-inspiring Haunted. Special mention goes to Haunted because of how much it sticks out and how it sounds nothing like anything else on here. From the brooding verses complete with distorted/whispered vocals to the eruption in the chorus, this song has it all. Something Like A Hero, likewise, proves to be the other true standout. Clocking in at just over six minutes it sort of takes you on a ride. It starts out harmlessly enough but ends in a climax that you most likely won't expect and surely won't forget.

My favorite songs are Your Armor, Everytime It Rains, Steel, Haunted, and Something Like A Hero. What really gets me is how easy it is to keep coming back to Char's music. At the most random times one of her songs will just pop in your head and you'll feel the need to get out her entire catalog and listen to all of it nonstop. There's no doubt that Charlotte Martin's fanbase will only grow and she'll only get better so there's no better time to hop on the bandwagon than now.

Here is a 74-minute sampler from Chandos's excellent Opera in English series. Tenor Dennis O'Neill features prominently in many excerpts. His Rodolfo in La Bohème is warm and loving, his Canio and Turiddu are dangerous, and his Cavaradossi is introspective. Bruce Ford, one of the world's most underrated tenors, is heard to great advantage as Almaviva in Rossini's Barber, Lionel in Martha, and briefly as Samson to Diana Montague's sultry Delilah. Jane Eaglen impresses as Tosca while Alan Opie does Figaro's and Marcello's music proud. John Tomlinson is a meaty Boris and Barry Banks makes a nice Ernesto in Don Pasquale. Beautiful Music..........2004-10-30

I moved to Champaign a few months ago and came across Amasong through a friend. This choir is AMAZING! I bought Amai over the summer and was stunned by their sound. Though most of the members are not "professional" musicians, they have an incredibly professional sound! I was so blown away that I went out and auditioned for the chorus and began singing with them! This is a must have for anyone who enjoys beautiful choral music!

This album has a wonderful variety of songs in many styles and languages, sung by a chorus with a very professional sound, although they are mostly non-professional singers. Although Amasong is a lesbian/feminist chorus, you don't have to fall into either of those groups to enjoy it. Kudos to their extraordinary founder/conductor, Kristina Boerger, for her wonderful choral arrangements as well as great leadership of her group.

I am a huge fan of rap music. My grandmother used to listen to G.Zamfir when I was little but I used to hate it. Now that I am 26 years old my musiccal tastes have changed. I heard "The Lonely Shepard" on the Kill Bill Vol.1 Soundtrack & absolutely fell in love with it. It is the most relaxing music that I have ever heard. Eversince I purchased this greatest hits album I cannot put it down. This type of music is for mature adults who enjoy the finer things in life. Compared to this rap is garbage.

I've always been an admirer of the pan flute, but then again who isn't? If you are looking for the best at picking up ladies wearing chest waders and an men's evening fur, you look to the nook. If you are looking to the master of the pan flute, you look no other place than Zamfir. Evidentally, Zamfir is pretty busy because he just took ABBA album cover from ABBA Gold and used it for his album, but that doesn't take away from the pure genius of the man's music. I don't expect Zamfir to design album covers just like I don't expect J abs to reach things in high places with his T rex arms. I expect Zamfir to turn tha mutha out on the pan flute and he does that. I'm a little disappointed his cover of "Tubthumping" by Chumbawumba didn't make the cut, but I'm sure there is another gold collection coming. If you want top o the line pan fluting, this is your album.

Vintage G and S and Great Sound Too.......2003-06-14

I purchased this CD with some fear that the sound quality might reflect its vintage 1920's and 30's origin. Well, this recording might be the very best transfer of 78s that I have ever heard! I really enjoy the "early" D'Oyly Carters because I think their combination of acting and singing is unsurpassed. This is certainly so for tenor Derek Oldham, contralto Bertha Lewis, and, of course, bass-baritone Darrell Fancourt. But EVERYONE really excels in their parts and it's great to hear the likes of Nellie Briercliffe, Muriel Dickson and Winifred Lawson (et al) in clear voice, with really no surface noise at all. The performances sound new and fresh.
