Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.co.uk
If the art of the female singer-songwriter revolves around coffee-table soliloquies then Eye to the Telescope--the debut album from Edinburgh-born chanteuse/guitarist KT Tunstall--is a pleasing mediation between the traditional demands of brooding egocentricity (espresso) and frothy commerciality (cappuccino). KT Tunstall has star quality. "Suddenly I See" is an effortlessly liberating pop fillip while, conversely, "False Alarm" redresses ABBA's "The Winner Takes It All" for losers who had nothing to lose to begin with. However, Tunstall isn't entirely convinced by the compromise ("I'm struggling to cater for the space I'm meant to fill" she sings) and "Miniature Disasters"--one of several strong numbers showcasing her aptitude for wrapping up pop tunes in either folky bluesiness or ponderous jazz--catalogues her desires for unfettered self-expression. The opening cut "Other Side Of The World" might sound like Dido without the giftwrapped grief (she's none too flattered with the comparisons) but Eye to the Telescope is spiritually closer to Carole King and Elvis Costello than Katie Melua. And that's no bad thing. --Kevin Maidment

KT Tunstall's debut album Eye To The Telescope is the creative consequence of her inquiring imagination. "My songs examine and explore little specific emotions or situations or stories," she explains. "They're kitchen table songs, like a conversation between me and one other person. It's almost like an alien has been sent to get emotional samples from human beings and put it all together on a record."

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Album.......2007-07-25

I love this album and there is not one bad song, so I can listen to it thoroughly. If you have not got this album yet what are you waiting for? Here is a tip if you liked James Blunt's Album Back to Bedlam then you will probably like this debut by KT Tunstall. In fact Amazon recommends this album if you do.

BTW when you first listen to this album you may not like it at first or maybe just like some songs, but after listening to it the second time it grows on you and you will absolutely love it. I know because when I first listened to this album I only liked half of it and feel asleep thinking this album was so boring until I listened to it the second time later in the day.

5 out of 5 stars Just A Great Artist.......2007-07-19

Excellent CD, and a special singer/songwriter/performer. Expect more good things from KT and please do yourself favor by ordering all of her stuff. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars perfect disc.......2007-06-27

I really love this CD, it puts me in a good mood every time I put it on. This girl is a talented singer and more of her should be heard on the radio. Her songs are artfully sung and she has her own original sound.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful album that grows on you.......2007-06-03

I had already purchased the track "Black Horse and a Cherry Tree" as a single, and borrowed this album from a friend to hear the rest of the songs. Upon a first listen, I only liked about three of the tracks, but as I kept it in my car and continued listening to it, I found my appreciation of the album as a whole increasing, and decided that I needed to buy my own copy. My favorite tracks are now "Miniature Disasters", "Silent Sea", and "Universe and U"--not, to my surprise, the tracks that first brought me to the album.

5 out of 5 stars Mysterious Metaphors.......2007-01-19

"Over the sea and far away
She's waiting like an iceberg
Waiting to change
But she's cold inside
She wants to be like the water"

The beauty in KT Tunstall's voice gives me shivers in the first song. She weaves in mysterious metaphors that are enjoyable to unravel.

The world she paints make sense in regards to emotions hidden and experiences well lived. With telescopic precision, she unveils the heart of emotional conflicts.

"The fire fades away
Most of everyday
Is full of tired excuses
But it's to hard to say
I wish it were simple
But we give up easily
You're close enough to see that
You're the other side of the world to me"

The lyrics speak for themselves and KT's voice is a vehicle for perfection. The songs are playful, relaxing and you may wish you were in a coffee shop listening to the first two tracks. Then, "Black Horse" takes off with dangerous appeal. Coffee shop casual turns country and then she delves into sultry moods. The delicate "Silent Sea" is haunting in beauty.

With dramatic pacing changes and a variety of familiar musical comforts, the album shines in places and wanders in melancholy momentarily between energetic creativity. Other Side of the World and Silent Sea stand out as unique treasures with poetic appeal and seem to reflect KT's heart and bring out the rapturous elements in her voice.

If you enjoy thinking about the ocean, you may also
enjoy Evening Ocean's The Attraction.

4 out of 5 stars Dislike "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree"? The album is FAR better!.......2006-12-28

Here's the thing: the song "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" was the equivalent to fingernails on a chalkboard to me (it seemed another annoying 'gimmick' song [those 'ooh hoo's] that seem to go over so well on American radio) and it's the very reason I avoided this album for an entire year. In my opinion, that song just made her sound like yet another raspy voiced singer from any bar band that I could see down the block.

But here's where things turned suprising for me. I found numerous rave reviews for this album (one that dared Aimee Mann to write songs as good!) and these finally forced me to listen beyond the one (and, to me, one dimensional) song.

Wow, what a happy suprise!

Seriously, if all you've heard is the one big 'hit' in America then you're really missing out... and getting the completely WRONG idea about Tunstall--this is music that is far more complex, intriguiging and, well, just plain better than "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" would lead you to believe.

Get it.

In fact, get the CD/DVD version! The CD adds a great song and the DVD will make a couple of things apparent straight away: Tunstall is even better live, and the videos illustrate that in the UK she's marketed a bit more truthfully, as the lion's share of the videos are UK specific and are of the far more superior songs to her one American 'hit'.

5 out of 5 stars The DVD is worth the extra price.......2006-10-12

Before you read this, you may want to take a look at my (5 star) review of the "Eye to the Telescope" CD (the version without the DVD included).

This CD/DVD combo contains the "Eye to the Telescope" CD -- with a bonus track that's not on the regular CD -- PLUS a DVD of music videos and live performances of several of the songs from the CD. The bonus song (called "Immune") is excellent; and is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

Most of the music videos are quite good (though I'll admit that the video for the hit song "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" wasn't quite as good as I had hoped it would be). But it's the live performances that really make this DVD worthwhile. As good as KT Tunstall is in the recording studio, she's even better on stage in front of a live audience. I've seen her a few times on TV and the Internet, and was very impressed with the quality of her work on stage. The live performances on this DVD are simply astounding. In fact, the live version of "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" on the DVD is far better than the studio version from the CD and the music video.

If you like KT Tunstall, then this CD/DVD combo set is definitely worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars I'm not big on "double-dipping" either, but yes, THIS is an exception..........2006-10-10

I agree with the prior reviewer, reissues of albums, less than a year after first release, I am not a fan of. HOWEVER, if done well, it's totally worth the coin and selling the earlier version used...if you'll find a store to take it in, that is, haha. This is one of those reissues done exceptionally well, and yes, I traded in the older US version.

To be honest, this is the way the album SHOULD have been released in the US in the first place!!! I mean, it did take a year for it to even GET released in the US, but as they say, timing is everything. The album itself is a masterpiece really, good gutsy spunky singer/songwriter pop/soul/rock. 12 cool songs, varying in tempo and mood, from all-out rockers to introspective, soulful, atmospheric ballads. The album is not at all overproduced either. The big US "hit", the short and tight "Black Horse And The Cherry Tree" is not the only good song here, unlike most artists, espesh 1-hit wonders. I'm not saying KT WILL be a 1-hit wonder in the US (she's not in the UK), but it could turn out that way, like Daniel Powter. I love the big catchy UK hit "Suddenly I See" (which should have clicked here too...it was a natural followup to "Black Horse"), opener "Other Side Of The World" is beautiful, the way KT breaks into falsetto on the chorus, but my fave would be the EXTREMELY catchy, jangly "Another Place To Fall"...whatta song!!! I call her sound "busker soul", and she reminds me of a few artists mixed together in her own individual way. Maybe Michelle Branch meets the late great Kirsty MacColl??? You figure her out. Keeps her music constantly interesting, and I'm looking forward to hearing KT evolve over time. I had the original US album, and didn't completely grasp her, and then I heard KT's fellow Scotswoman Sandi Thom, whom I liked as well, thinking she was better than KT. Then I saw this deluxe version, and hearing Sandi's record again, I'm thinking I could be wrong, as something was missing. Well, I was wrong, KT IS better, and this package sealed the deal. The music clicked more now and I had to see the visuals to see she is the real deal, and what's cooler is she's completely unpretentious and has no ego; I'd get on with KT very well I think, she seems really cool as a person, like I'd love to have a beer with her sometime. Oh yeah, the bonus track on this version, the acoustic, spare, Live At Gaia Music in London, performance of "Immune", another KT original not on the album, is a beautiful song, and like the rest of this album, and a fave singer/songwriter of mine, Shawn Mullins, just KT's voice and guitar can just draw you in. And to think, she was self-taught!!!!! Makes sense actually, as true originals can never BE taught and that way, they come up with their individual style and sound, if you know what I mean.

Anyhoo, the packaging on this deluxe packge is nice, I like the cover with the overlaying of shiny details on top of that cool silvery B+W pic of KT. The extra pics inside are cool, of KT busking and with her band. And the expanded booklet is nice, with the extra pics and sleeve artwork of her UK singles, full lyrics, etc. My only problem, and it's a tiny quibble...the side spine was printed upside down. I had to cut and tape it so it's right-side up, some people don't mind...it's a slight, but fixable, problem with me, what can I say???

Now, most important in this package is the DVD (without it, you basically have the original album, correct??), which is 41 minutes and change, a nice value, not too skimpy. It's cool to have all 5 videos from the album, including both US & UK clips of "Suddenly I See". I hope they don't redo "Other Side Of The World" for US play on VH1, as the UK clip is fine and has a cool concept along with the lovely song that it is. And, the 5 live performances are GREAT!!! Three of them at Washington, D.C.'s awesome 9:30 club, with her full band; I was there for another show whilst visiting my relatives for Thanksgiving one year, I love that place. The other two are even better, at one of my fave venues: NYC's tiny intimate Mercury Lounge, just KT on acoustic guitar and pedals, and her drummer boyfriend accompanying her. What's cool is she's creating all the sounds at that moment...guitar sounds and layers of vocals & effects using echo. You have to see it to know what I mean. And KT seems so normal, accessable, etc...aka not a "star", which is probably how she likes it, as do I. The only thing I wish the DVD had, in addition to all this goodness, is an interview with KT, an on-the-road profile or a documentary on the making of "Eye To The Telescope" as many of these types of DVD have, oh well...this DVD is good enough.

This package, you really GET what KT Tunstall is all about...she might go down as a "1-hit wonder" in America, but really, who the hell cares??? Better to be remembered as an ARTIST. I prefer artistry, not hits.

5 out of 5 stars KT.......2006-09-20

From her 1st Music Video in the USA. I knew this female and her way in the music was different and would somehow make a impact. When I seen her on TV preforming live, no track in the background, makes all the music in person; right there as she goes on. You know that's basically the read deal, and you can't really talk trash (could you do it?). You show me someone else that can really do that. Jessica Simpson? Ashlee? Britney Spears? Even females that play stuff, Michelle Branch and others have nothing on KT. You can even mention males too like Nick, or so. Whether they DO play something, or not, or have a band with them to perform. KT Tunstall is all in one! Like the Real Deal basically, lol.

I wanted to buy her CD, there was something about it that said "No, Don't buy it". I couldn't figure it out, Until now!! If you bought the 1st either have it as a back up, or sell it used. This would be the one to buy :) All the Vids, and some of her Live. If you never go to concerts, this is prefect for you to experience it.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good........2007-06-05

I like the album, but I was disappointed when I recieved the cd. I ordered this album instead of purchasing it from a store because it had a live version of Black Horse & the Cherry Tree, but I didn't have the live version. I am usually pleased with the delivery service by ImportCDs, but not this time.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful album.......2007-03-08

I heard K.T. Tunstall on NPR and immediately got this album. It is lively, interesting, well performed. I hope this young lady goes far, very far.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but hoped it was a bit better.......2007-01-06

I just recieved my CD and though it was supposedly the Import version, it appears to be the US version. They are pretty close except track 4 is "Black Horse and a Cherry Tree" and isn't live and a couple other tracks are switched around. I was hoping to hear that live track, but I was disappointed. Also, I love the song "Suddenly I see" on the radio, but it seems much slower on the CD and loses its adrenaline and "oomph," again disappointing. I do like "Other Side of the World" and "Under the Weather" though. It's definitely a listenable CD, but I was hoping for something a little better.

4 out of 5 stars black horse and the cherry tree.......2006-08-14

Well a buddy of mine and i thought up of an analysis for it and i was just wondering if anybody else had another meaning or agreed. We came up with she went out in search for love so she let her heart lead the way and she came across a black guy (big black horse) who she lost her virginity to (cherry tree) and then he proposed but out of fear she turns him down because she does not believe he is the one for her. She believes her heart has led her down the wrong path (heart forsakened me). And that's pretty much about it so lets hear some replies.

5 out of 5 stars I must say, a rather refreshing album with almost spectacular clarity........2006-07-21

1 out of 5 stars Don't Support this Artist.......2007-02-25

Well, my daughter and I love KT's music, but I don't own a CD player since I play all my music on my computer with my BOSE speakers it sounds awesome and I can keep my whole collection at my finger tips. I get this CD and my computer won't even recognize it because of the anti-piracy protection, so, basically I need to buy a special CD player just for this disc or I can return it for a refund since this artists obviously doesn't care about her fans or their ability to listen to music they PAID for on this very site. I would ask everyone to please not support artists that use this kind of anti-piracy software on their CDs. If we can all stick together we can get our 'fair use' of a product we paid for and change the disgusting greed of this artist and others like her.

i ordered it back months ago and you have back ordered it till december. BUT, i can go to Hastings and buy it off the shelf right now. why are you having so much trouble getting it? i doubt i'll order from you for a long, long time.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing - Copy protected??.......2006-08-04

I heard Black Horse on the radio before I had ever heard of her, back in November of '05. I got work and Googled her -NOTHING. Eventually my wife bought the CD right here at Amazon as an import, before the domestic release. SHE IS AMAZING!!! As for the copy protection, maybe it's because I use a MAC, but I had no trouble copying to my MAC and my iPod, and I made a copy of the CD so a co-worker could take a listen.

I saw her on the Ellen show, playing all the vocals and intruments herself. Amazing.

My wife and caught her show when she came through our town, front row. It was incredible. She is on my short list of favorite artists.

Oh, and as a teenager she played on the streets of Burlington Vermont - my home -

4 out of 5 stars Refreshing!.......2006-03-22

This is a good debut album. The songs are entertaining, well-performed and have something to say. A refreshing diversion in the new music of today. Whether K T Tunstall can maintain this excellent start remains to be seen, but I would expect this group of songs to be superb when performed live (I have separately heard a live recording of 'Black Horse & The Cherry Tree' and is was really good). I would definitely like to hear more.

3 out of 5 stars Copy Protected.......2006-02-08

The music is great. Refreshingly creative. The CD is copy protected which is not good for those consumers interested in exercising their fair use rights to put the real CD quality (1440 kbps) music on a more convenient medium. Too bad this practice hurts honest consumers in the name of thwarting the few who practice music pirating. A little computer savy and research however can get around the copy protection which makes it little more than an inconvenience. Pricing the product lower would be a more effective way to combat music pirating - ie. make it cheap enough that it's not worth the trouble to steal. The industry seems to be pretty ignorant overall with regard to their own product and their customers.

5 out of 5 stars Eye To The Telescope.......2007-05-10

Watching American Idle (yes I know it's mispelled) last year, I heard 'what's-her'name' sing a song that immediately caught my attention. It was 'Black Horse...'. Following that, the radio stations picked up on that karaoke version and began playing the real song by the real artist. Much better! I was wondering who the singer was. KT Tunstall became known almost overnight. Then the radio stations began playing other tracks from 'Eye to the Telescope' Eye to the Telescope (CD+DVD). They were great! The imported version of this CD also includes studio and live videos on an included DVD. Well worth the extra money. Hope she stays on the music scene for many years. One of the best newcomers I've heard in years.

5 out of 5 stars Take that, Freud! So there, Jung!!! Is Sartre REALLY any help??? Ouch!!!.......2006-08-23

I give a listen to anything in a minor key with a beat. The beat, the tune, the voice, the singing and those great, great lyrics make "Big, Black Horse and Cherry Tree" a keeper: .... "well my heart knows me better than i know myself so i'm gonna let it do all the talking.... i came across a place in the middle of nowhere with a big black horse and a cherry tree." .... .... when the big black horse that looked this way, said hey lady, will you marry me? **** chorus **** " .... i said no, no, you're not the one for me. **** "and my heart had a problem, in the early hours, so it stopped it dead for a beat or two.... but i cut some cord, and i shouldn't have done that, and it won't forgive me after all these years." .... "so i sent it to a place in the middle of nowhere with a big black horse and a cherry* tree.... now it won't come back, cause it's oh so happy and now i've got a hole for the world to see." **** chorus **** " .... and it said no, no, you're not the one for me...." Take that, Freud! So there, Jung!!! Is Sartre REALLY any help??? Ouch!!!

5 out of 5 stars Commercial success........2006-02-14

How many times have you heard a snippet of a song in a TV commercial and wondered "Who was that?"?

How many times have you bought the album and been disappointed?

For me, the little snippet of "Suddenly I See" that kept going through my head was enough to make me want to hear more. The album was no disappointment at-all.

Excellent music!

4 out of 5 stars Wow.......2005-10-11

I first heard KT's track "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" on the radio and found it rather catchy. I got her album and was very impressed. Her music is similar to Rachael Yamagata and Sarah McLachlan and there is no doubt she has a beautiful voice. Her tracks are also great if you play guitar and/or piano and like to sing along. A few of those tracks have a really groovy and catchy beat/tune that makes this album stand out. Keep your eyes on KT Tunstall.

5 out of 5 stars Magical and Poetic.......2006-08-13

    5 out of 5 stars A great tribute to K. T. Tunstall's music........2007-06-19

I received this CD a couple of days ago and have already played it a dozen times; it is that good. Bluegrass fiddles, banjos, dobros and mandolins lend themselves very well to KT's music. Jennifer Dixon does the vocals on this tribute album and does an excellent job. Her voice is perfectly suited for KT's lyrics. If you are a K.T. Tunstall fan, as I am, you will not be disappointed in this beautifully done tribute album.
