Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
From one spin of The Dream of the Blue Turtles, Sting's first solo release, it's obvious that for him there would be life beyond the Police. Teamed with a band of top jazz players, he presents his musical visions that had gone unrealized while he was still constrained by his former ensemble. In style and subject matter, it's a decidedly diverse collection of songs and the playing is excellent throughout. The love songs are mostly focused on endings or escapes, and it's quite possible to interpret much of the imagery in reference to the bitter breakup of the Police. Sting's concern with history and politics is in evidence: he makes a father's plea for sanity and restraint in the nuclear age, takes up for the U.K.'s much-abused coal miners, and relates the savage stupidity of World War I to the destructive effects of adolescent heroin addiction. Songs that seem elaborately constructed and recorded contrast with others that are presented as one-take jams. Seen as a whole, The Dream of the Blue Turtles is eclectic, ambitious--sometimes pretentious--but altogether worth owning. --Al Massa

Product Description
Having shed the pop shackles of his popular British rock trio the Police, Sting released a 1985 solo debut foreshadowing both the artistic quality and the pretentiousness of his lucrative solo career. Accompanied by saxophonist Branford Marsalis and other superb players, the singer/bassist pulls off an occasionally excellent mixture of pop and jazz--the radio hits "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" and "Fortress Around Your Heart" are gentle and compelling. But Sting's can't-we-get-along lesson about global politics ("Russians") and his occasional stabs at fusion are overbearing kinks that would take years to work out. (Trivia: Darryl Jones, who would replace Bill Wyman in the Rolling Stones a decade later, plays bass here.) --Steve Knopper

I liked him with The Police, but Sting got me forever with this music.

4 out of 5 stars All star Band.......2007-03-14

This is a musician's Sting album. Actually, they all are, as Sting is quite a musician himself. This time, he surrounds himself with some world class jazz musicians, like Branford and Omar, and the results are occassionally stunning. Yes, there are some real classics on here, like set them free. However, the musical highlights come on tracks like Russians and shadows in the rain. Branford and Co. really cook on these tracks in a very modern, jazzy style. There is a bit of reverb on this album, which I think can take away from the live feel they were going for. As I say, all Sting albums are for musicians, but this one takes the cake over the rest. Adieu.

5 out of 5 stars Good Music!.......2007-01-06

This was a re-purchase for me and this recording is just as good as I remembered it. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Life Without the Police.......2006-12-28

I got this in LP form in 1985 for Christmas. In fact, five people gave me this album! That's okay, one for each personality, I guess. But y'know what, I kept them all. Four of the five are still in the original shrink wrap it was packaged in. People are telling me that I need to sell them on e-bay, but I can't...I just can't seem to do it. I know, intellectually, that nobody needs five copies of the same album...but emotionally, I feel like if I part with them to the "wrong" people, I'll be disgracing the Sting legacy.

Y'see, I love Sting. I loved him when he was with the Police and I loved him when he embarked on his solo career. This particular album, the Dream of the Blue Turtles is a masterpiece. Every time I hear it, I am just amazed at the depth and the power it has and it's quite minimalist. Maybe less really is more. Something I haven't learned yet, obviously, but that's okay, I'll get there one of these days.

My favorite song on the album used to be, "Love is the Seventh Wave". I don't particularly know why, it is a little "poppy" but it kind of reminds me of "Canary in a Coal Mine". That was a fantastic Police tune that hardly got any air play.

So yeah, this album is now almost 22 years old. My, how time flies...maybe one day I'll replace my vinyl version with the CD...or maybe I won't.

Peace and Blessings.

5 out of 5 stars Sting - THE DREAM OF THE BLUE TURTLES (1985).......2006-08-07

The extraodinary success of 1983's SYNCHRONICITY convinced Sting to go solo, resulting in the end of The Police, but also in this: THE DREAM OF THE BLUE TURTLES, his stellar solo debut. It's a terrific blend of jazz and rock, which may come as a surprise to those who are familiar only with Sting's more recent work. Sting's lyrics are as grand as ever, and while the songs may not be quite as memorable as those penned during Sting's time with The Police, they're very fun AND intelligent - a rarity with pop music. BLUE TURTLES contains two hit singles, "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" and the heavy "Russians", as well as a superior remake of The Police's "Shadows In The Rain", along with many other greats including "We Work The Black Seam" (about the destruction of the planet at humanity's hands), "Children's Crusade" (about the stupidity of World War I), and the strong finale, "Fortress Around Your Heart" (written about Sting's seperation from his first wife, which also served as the inspiration for the Police hits "Every Breath You Take" and "King Of Pain"). Though the songs aren't musically as dense as those on Sting's subsequent releases, THE DREAM OF THE BLUE TURTLES holds up as one of his very finest albums, as well as one of the best albums to come out of the 1980s.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated, But Not Forgotten.......2004-06-30

When The Police disbanded, Sting came out with a shocker of an album. "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" is an A+ single, albeit without Sting's deepest lyrics. Unfortunately, some of the other tracks are sometimes overlooked. The follow-up single and closing song on this album, "Fortress Around Your Heart" may be one of the best songs about the dissolution of a relationship ever written, essentially comparing it to a war. "Children's Crusade" is a comparison between the horrors that children faced at that time, and what they faced in 1984 (This album is 20 years old). "Russians" can also seem dated unless you respect the time frame in which this album was released. Many of the tracks dabble into a jazzy-type of feel (i.e. "Shadows in the Rain"--bless the late Kenny Kirkland's sparkling keyboard, "Moon Over Bourbon Street", and the title track. ...and it all works brilliantly! The only thing that was wrong concerning this album was the fact that it lost out for the "Album of the Year" Grammy award to the good, but not great "No Jacket Required" by Phil Collins. This album will always remain a classic.

1 out of 5 stars How to ruin a great CD.......2001-10-27

I expected a lot from a remastered CD. This engineers version is terrible, or should I say treble. If remastered means add some reverb and boost the treble through the stratosphere then this is a work of art. After I leave here I'm ordering the original.

5 out of 5 stars Best of both worlds.......2001-09-18

Who've said that pop music can't be experimental and risky? Sometimes, it does. This CD is equaly commercialy oriented, with sweet pop clasic gems ("If you love...", "Love is the seventh wave"), and bravely pushed into new ground, with the invaluable contributions of a selection of some of the best musicians of the new jazz generation (by then), especially B. Marsalis (sax) and K. Kirkland (keyboard). With them on fold, Sting gets into his most deep and complex stuff: in songs like

"Children's crusade", "Shadows in the rain" (Police did that before, but this version is better) and "Consider me gone" you can hear a lot of jamming coming to surface. Anyway, my absolute favorite is "Fortress around your heart", an essay on the terrible efects of carrying a jealous way of life. And of course, the lyric are, once again, oustanding.

If I was written a review for the former audio edition, I'd rate it only 4 stars, because the sound was really thin on that. But this new version put the levels where they should be, taking back power to the music. So you have a total classic, don't waste your time and get it. Take care yourself, Bye
