Bachelor No. 2 is the product of a woman whose 40th birthday looms months ahead, and it illustrates how a little seasoning has paid off creatively for Aimee Mann. Always an incisive lyricist, the eloquent singer-songwriter further hones her wordplay to a razor-sharp edge. Her subjects are so adroitly sliced and diced that little blood is shed, though they're permanently cut down to size. "Calling It Quits" targets some cad who is "numbering himself among the masterminds 'cause he's hit upon the leverage of valentines." Not that Mann spares herself from a steely assessment: "I know I had it coming / From a Caesar who was only slumming" she admits in "The Fall of the World's Own Optimist." Though this 13-track collection borrows three songs from its immediate predecessor, Mann's soundtrack to Magnolia, its musical ingenuity and consistency (notable considering five different production teams are credited here) make the scattered redundancies irrelevant. Mann's artistic growth has been evident with each new release, and Bachelor marks her biggest leap forward to date. --Steven Stolder

Aimee's "Sgt. Pepper's" Album!.......2006-03-22
You also get a few tracks that appear on her Magnolia CD which is nice. The best songs on here are Red Vines, Deathly, you know I can't say there are best songs because it's great from beginning to end. If you have any interest in Aimee Mann or even remember 'Til Tuesday then you must get this disc. It's a must! You won't be dissapointed.
"driving sideways, if you roll down the window you'll see , you're where you don't belong "
Her lyrics will blow you away.
by far her best album to date!!.......2006-03-05
look here and start with this.
BACHELOR NO.2 also was involved for the success
of the "MAGNOLIA" soundtrack-- about 3 or 4 songs
from the bachelor album.
favorite is "red vines" and "calling it
quits"
Grudge against man(n)?.......2005-12-10
The music on Bachelor No. 2 runs the spectrum from quiet yet scathing commentary (Nothing is Good Enough) to the defiantely rocking (Deathly). Almost everything on Bachelor No. 2 is a resounding success, thanks to the combo of Mann's smart and unusual wordplay, assured melodies, and solid musicianship all around. Even when Mann resorts to dropping the "F" bomb in stunning opener How Am I Different?, one gets the idea that she is simply displaying a flippance over her romantic situation rather than being blatantly disgusted by it. Another in a string of highs is The Fall of the World's Own Optimist, cowritten by Mann's esteemed male predecessor Elvis Costello. Though one doubts after listening to the prevailing themes throughout No. 2 that the optimist she speaks of was ever herself. Mann more likely sees the rest of the world as unwitting optimists, and her sharp, cunning eye and sweet lips are the device to lay plain these optimists naivety. However, Mann shows the vulnerability of falling victim to these traps herself through her secret yearning of the subjects in which she sings. Kudos!
For more rocking and possibly even more emotional renditions of several of these songs and others from her now 12-year solo career, pick up a copy of Live at St. Anne's Warehouse.

You can't hear this on MP3!.......2005-02-24
This is a prime example - great album, superior format (SACD), and incredible mastering - the results are sonically astonishing & worth paying for.
"Hello McFly? Anybody in there?"
Great songs, Great sound!.......2004-11-18
Aimee Mann's subdued singing style and incisive lyrics may not be to everyone's tastes, but I highly recommend this disk if you like slightly jazzy adult contemporary music. It reminds me of Elvis Costello's 90's albums without quite the vocal range. I really enjoy everything about this SACD, and it will remain in my SACD changer for a while.

A Purcell Sampler, or a Greatest Hits disk, if you prefer........2006-02-05
1995 was a year when we got to revel in everything Purcell. I was able to see a very delightful staging of "The Indian Queene" in London at the Barbican. It had narration, dancing, the singing, and wonderful playing. At the other portion of the concert, I enjoyed a performance of "Come, Ye Sons of Art" and other works by Hogwood et al. I was hoping to hear Kirkby, and she was billed. However, she was ill. Catherine Bott did a fine job as did John Bowman (both on this disk). Another counter-tenor I was so impressed with was Robin Blaze. I haven't heard much of him since, but he was terrific that night.
There are selections from his works for stage such as "King Arthur", "The Fairy Queen", Did and Aneas, and more. The disk also provides a selection of instrumental works, some sacred selections, and all the works are a delight. The track of "Come, Ye Sons of Art" is from 1953 and recorded by Alfred Deller. If you love the movement of historically informed performance, you do owe some debt to Deller. He was an early reviver of the counter-tenor voice and trying to create a style of performance that might be more appropriate and true to the music of earlier times. He helped bring about new interest in madricals, and other early music forms.
That Emma Kirkby sings on the disk is, of course, a delight for me. I have been captivated by her singing since I first heard her live in December 1980. We also get to delight in the singing of soprano Catherine Bott and counter-tenor John Bowman. All are led by the great Christopher Hogwood (except for the Deller track, obviously).

Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24
This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.
Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.
My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

No Dodo.......2005-09-25
Happily, although it took until 1999 before any new material surfaced, by launching her own label, Superego, Aimee Mann had the last laugh, buying back her album, taking creative control and achieving a far better royalty rate in the process.
The film Magnolia, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, marked her return, featured nine original Aimee Mann songs, four of which resurface here, including her Oscar-nominated song Save Me (not on the US version of the album).
Not having the Magnolia soundtrack album I cannot tell you if all of these are all new recordings or whether there is some overlap, but the song Nothing Is Good Enough, an instrumental in Magnolia, has full lyrics on Bachelor No. 2.
Aimee Mann has had a number of Top Fifty singles in the UK, and has made a number of appearances on Later With Jools Holland, and is therefore known as a highly talented and incisive singer-songwriter, her sharp lyrical wit leavened by her sense of melody, and the creative freedom she clearly enjoys here resulted in her strongest album to date.
In some ways it was business as usual, as regular collaborators from the past, such as Julianna Hatfield, Glenn Tilbrook, Michael Hausman (from 'Til Tuesday), Jon Brion and Grant Lee Phillips appear on the record, and the song The Fall of the World's Own Optimist was written with Elvis Costello, with whom she had previously written The Other End of The Telescope for 'Til Tuesday, though the other musicians on the record, such as Michael Lockwood and John Sands, overall make a more valuable contribution. The acerbic Calling It Quits was also a single in the UK, and the British edition of this album includes the extra track Backfire
