Bachelor No. 2 is the product of a woman whose 40th birthday looms months ahead, and it illustrates how a little seasoning has paid off creatively for Aimee Mann. Always an incisive lyricist, the eloquent singer-songwriter further hones her wordplay to a razor-sharp edge. Her subjects are so adroitly sliced and diced that little blood is shed, though they're permanently cut down to size. "Calling It Quits" targets some cad who is "numbering himself among the masterminds 'cause he's hit upon the leverage of valentines." Not that Mann spares herself from a steely assessment: "I know I had it coming / From a Caesar who was only slumming" she admits in "The Fall of the World's Own Optimist." Though this 13-track collection borrows three songs from its immediate predecessor, Mann's soundtrack to Magnolia, its musical ingenuity and consistency (notable considering five different production teams are credited here) make the scattered redundancies irrelevant. Mann's artistic growth has been evident with each new release, and Bachelor marks her biggest leap forward to date. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars 10 of the best ever.......2007-06-29

Aimee Mann will likely go down in history as one of the best songwriters of her generation. There is no question that she has a scholarly wit and a devilish sense of humor. We're all lucky that she shares her talent with the world. Bachelor No. 2 is the best example of Aimee's endless talent. Practically every line of every song is a poem, a story, a song if its own. When Aimee sings "Now that I've met you, would you object to never seeing each other again" to begin Deathly, you know she means business. "Just Like Anyone" is less than 2 minutes long, but Aimee's tender words and vocals are regretful, bitter, desperate, denying, and honest. "Red Vines" is yet another standout on an album of standouts, and quite possibly her best overall song ever. Thank you Aimee for such a wonderful catalog of music, particularly the last remains of the dodo.

5 out of 5 stars grows.......2007-06-11

this cd grows on you and is pleasant and complex at the same time. just really good music and an artist that you should own.

5 out of 5 stars Aimee's "Sgt. Pepper's" Album!.......2006-03-22

I'll try to be fair since she is my favorite artist but this is by far the best and most complete album Aimme Mann has made. A bit more mature from Whatvever and I'm With Stupid. Aimee finds her knack. And she has not dissappointed us with Lost In Space and The Forgotten Arm. These are her best albums by far. But Bachelor #2 is just awesome. It starts out strong and ends so pleasantly. Some disagree but You Do is a great and moving song. She played it in West Palm at her last show and I was blown away.
You also get a few tracks that appear on her Magnolia CD which is nice. The best songs on here are Red Vines, Deathly, you know I can't say there are best songs because it's great from beginning to end. If you have any interest in Aimee Mann or even remember 'Til Tuesday then you must get this disc. It's a must! You won't be dissapointed.

"driving sideways, if you roll down the window you'll see , you're where you don't belong "

Her lyrics will blow you away.

5 out of 5 stars by far her best album to date!!.......2006-03-05

anyone needing to be introduced to her music?
look here and start with this.
BACHELOR NO.2 also was involved for the success
of the "MAGNOLIA" soundtrack-- about 3 or 4 songs
from the bachelor album.
favorite is "red vines" and "calling it
quits"

5 out of 5 stars Grudge against man(n)?.......2005-12-10

Stepping out a bit of my usual music comfort zone to review Aimee Mann is testamony that she is one mighty artist/performer indeed. I was introduced to Mann thru rave reviews in Rolling Stone's Album Guide (2004 ed.) as her solo career was already well into full throttle. And what a pleasant surprise this introduction to her unique musical world was. Summing up Aimee Mann is not an uncomplicated task. Like a child, she initially comes across as a bit cloying, later only to cut you to shreds through her acrobatically biting and literary verse and chorus.

The music on Bachelor No. 2 runs the spectrum from quiet yet scathing commentary (Nothing is Good Enough) to the defiantely rocking (Deathly). Almost everything on Bachelor No. 2 is a resounding success, thanks to the combo of Mann's smart and unusual wordplay, assured melodies, and solid musicianship all around. Even when Mann resorts to dropping the "F" bomb in stunning opener How Am I Different?, one gets the idea that she is simply displaying a flippance over her romantic situation rather than being blatantly disgusted by it. Another in a string of highs is The Fall of the World's Own Optimist, cowritten by Mann's esteemed male predecessor Elvis Costello. Though one doubts after listening to the prevailing themes throughout No. 2 that the optimist she speaks of was ever herself. Mann more likely sees the rest of the world as unwitting optimists, and her sharp, cunning eye and sweet lips are the device to lay plain these optimists naivety. However, Mann shows the vulnerability of falling victim to these traps herself through her secret yearning of the subjects in which she sings. Kudos!

For more rocking and possibly even more emotional renditions of several of these songs and others from her now 12-year solo career, pick up a copy of Live at St. Anne's Warehouse.

5 out of 5 stars You can't hear this on MP3!.......2005-02-24

All these labels whining about downloading, guess what? Put out sound quality worth paying for & we'll buy!

This is a prime example - great album, superior format (SACD), and incredible mastering - the results are sonically astonishing & worth paying for.

"Hello McFly? Anybody in there?"

5 out of 5 stars Great songs, Great sound!.......2004-11-18

This is a very impressive disk. I have had this album on regular CD pretty much since it originally came out. The sound was always decent. But this SACD sounds so good, that if you are a fan of this album, you will have to get rid of your old version and pay the premium price for this version. The sound is very immediate and present. It sounds as though the band is near you. Aimee Mann's voice is clearer than before and there's a lot of space around her voice. The other instruments are very distinct in the soundstage. They are also very clear and you can follow everything being played very easily. The percussion is amazing. The dynamic range is really very nice and realistic.

Aimee Mann's subdued singing style and incisive lyrics may not be to everyone's tastes, but I highly recommend this disk if you like slightly jazzy adult contemporary music. It reminds me of Elvis Costello's 90's albums without quite the vocal range. I really enjoy everything about this SACD, and it will remain in my SACD changer for a while.

4 out of 5 stars Great Sound but NOT 5.1.......2004-04-13

This is a fabulous disc, one that you'll be listening to 10 years from now. The SACD stereo sound quality is superb, however the hybrid SACD is a STEREO ONLY, not 5.1 mix.

5 out of 5 stars A Purcell Sampler, or a Greatest Hits disk, if you prefer........2006-02-05

This is a compilation disk of Greatest Hits, as it were, of Henry Purcell recorded by various artists from 1953 (the Alfred Deller track) through the 1970s through 1994. The point of the disk was part of the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the much to early death of this great composer and one of the great geniuses of music that England or Britain has ever produced. I have always been a devotee of his music and absolutely adore the way he set English. It is absolutely unique to him and so full of wonderful effects that create a greater whole than the music or words alone.

1995 was a year when we got to revel in everything Purcell. I was able to see a very delightful staging of "The Indian Queene" in London at the Barbican. It had narration, dancing, the singing, and wonderful playing. At the other portion of the concert, I enjoyed a performance of "Come, Ye Sons of Art" and other works by Hogwood et al. I was hoping to hear Kirkby, and she was billed. However, she was ill. Catherine Bott did a fine job as did John Bowman (both on this disk). Another counter-tenor I was so impressed with was Robin Blaze. I haven't heard much of him since, but he was terrific that night.

There are selections from his works for stage such as "King Arthur", "The Fairy Queen", Did and Aneas, and more. The disk also provides a selection of instrumental works, some sacred selections, and all the works are a delight. The track of "Come, Ye Sons of Art" is from 1953 and recorded by Alfred Deller. If you love the movement of historically informed performance, you do owe some debt to Deller. He was an early reviver of the counter-tenor voice and trying to create a style of performance that might be more appropriate and true to the music of earlier times. He helped bring about new interest in madricals, and other early music forms.

That Emma Kirkby sings on the disk is, of course, a delight for me. I have been captivated by her singing since I first heard her live in December 1980. We also get to delight in the singing of soprano Catherine Bott and counter-tenor John Bowman. All are led by the great Christopher Hogwood (except for the Deller track, obviously).

5 out of 5 stars Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24

Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.

This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.

Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.

My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

4 out of 5 stars No Dodo.......2005-09-25

The best thing about the eighties band 'Til Tuesday, Aimee Mann has long been regarded as something of a best kept secret, an epithet not dispelled by the collapse of her first solo record label Imago after one 1993 album, and then, when the label that released her next album, I'm With Stupid (1995), Geffen, got taken over by the conglomerate Universal, who tried to force her new material in a more commercial direction, by her jumping ship.
Happily, although it took until 1999 before any new material surfaced, by launching her own label, Superego, Aimee Mann had the last laugh, buying back her album, taking creative control and achieving a far better royalty rate in the process.
The film Magnolia, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, marked her return, featured nine original Aimee Mann songs, four of which resurface here, including her Oscar-nominated song Save Me (not on the US version of the album).
Not having the Magnolia soundtrack album I cannot tell you if all of these are all new recordings or whether there is some overlap, but the song Nothing Is Good Enough, an instrumental in Magnolia, has full lyrics on Bachelor No. 2.
Aimee Mann has had a number of Top Fifty singles in the UK, and has made a number of appearances on Later With Jools Holland, and is therefore known as a highly talented and incisive singer-songwriter, her sharp lyrical wit leavened by her sense of melody, and the creative freedom she clearly enjoys here resulted in her strongest album to date.
In some ways it was business as usual, as regular collaborators from the past, such as Julianna Hatfield, Glenn Tilbrook, Michael Hausman (from 'Til Tuesday), Jon Brion and Grant Lee Phillips appear on the record, and the song The Fall of the World's Own Optimist was written with Elvis Costello, with whom she had previously written The Other End of The Telescope for 'Til Tuesday, though the other musicians on the record, such as Michael Lockwood and John Sands, overall make a more valuable contribution. The acerbic Calling It Quits was also a single in the UK, and the British edition of this album includes the extra track Backfire

5 out of 5 stars Not a Single Flaw.......2003-03-11

BAchelor No. 2 is another masterpiece from on of the best singer/songwriters of her generation. Every tract is awesome. AMong the standouts (of a cd with no fluff tracts) are CIgerettes and Redvines, The Fall of the world's own Optimist-a song with a fun flavor to it, Deathly-which in large part inspired the movie Magnolia, Save me-the song nominates of the Oscar + the Quick time video of the same song and my favorie Calling it Quits- a song with includes the type of turn of phrases that has endured Ms. Mann to those who see her wonderful skill. This cd is highly polished but extremely spirited with wit and emotion. Buy this cd if you enjoy aimee mann the gt tough girl who has turned into a goldmine.

5 out of 5 stars Aimee Mann ~ Bachelor No. 2.......2001-08-15

I discovered this album again after I saw the beautiful movie Magnolia. Aimee's music is used wonderfully through that movie, and gave some of the scenes that extra emotional feeling. This European release has some bonustracks and also the video for the Oscar nominated song Save Me, from ofcourse the Magnolia soundtrack. I'm glad that because the movie, Aimee has gained more attention, that she rightfully deserves.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent cd!.......2007-05-08

I used to own a Zukerman cd of the Four Seasons with a British chamber orchestra, but have since played it so many times it just simply isn't working anymore. I tried to find it but it is no longer available so bought this one. It's a beautiful rendition of the Four Seasons, if it doesn't quite have the lightness and dancing quality of the original, but it has many other lovely baroque favorites included. My kids, who call classical music "mommy music", really like this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Jacques Loussier Trio is fantastic.......2000-10-16

Ok, I have to admit that I bought this mainly for the Jacques Loussier Trio. The Swingle Singers are ok, but they don't do too much for me. I usually end up skipping most of their pieces on this album; however, I do think that the Jacques Loussier Trio make up for that. It's still a great album. It's a pity they named the CD Bach for Bachelor Pads because it will likely deter some of my fellow bachelorettes, or even married couples from buying it. If you're a Bach fan, you'll likely get a kick out of these "new" versions of his great compositions.
